Rebecca001 got a reaction from MadyVanilla in Fall 2021
@MadyVanilla what an insightful and honest post. I empathise with so much you have written there. The hardest bit of any of my w30 has been the acceptance that I eat food as emotional comfort (I still do, often) and when that’s taken away, I have to feel all the emotions without my helper! My “food freedom”  has generally been just compliant food, but introducing more and more non-compliant behaviours until I, like you articulate in your post, spiral out so much from the tightness of the rules that actually it’s irrelevant that my food is compliant. I feel just as bloated, over fed and stuffed as if I was eating donuts and sweets. And then I start again.

you have got this, you know what to do, and yeah you’re right it is tough some days, but so are you. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t keep on trying.

May I assist in briefly straightening your crown?
I was heartened a few years ago when Melissa (co-founder of Whole 30) came out with a blog post backing off the whole "it's not hard" tough-love mantra that so many of us had internalized. "Changing the way you think about food is hard," she says, and I agree. "[Whole 30] is a monumental transformation in how you think about food, your body, your life, and what you want out of the time you have left on this earth."
I somehow find it heartening that there are SO many of us who do not have all these principles perfectly dialed in.
    Perhaps a Whole 30 isn't "getting off heroin"-level hard — but I certainly don't think it's easy.
Your self-awareness is, as usual, admirable. If your day closes with some new insights and self-compassion, let's call it a win.

@MadyVanillayes I do get some reassurance from knowing what’s in store (good and bad) - if this was my first time I think I’d have quit by now! I suppose it says a lot that I only knew my period was due because Facebook told me, not because I had a week of pmt so that in itself if a sign that good things are coming.

@MadyVanilla well done. I think in a way it’s good that you restarted. We can so easily develop that ‘it’s ok’ sort of mentality and I think it’s a strong statement to ourselves that we deserve to do it properly. I restarted last week for a similar reason; my almond milk wasn’t compliant, and also I knew I’d not germ as disciplined with behaviours as I wanted to be. It was an important lesson to learn.

I use Fitbit too and I almost never ever get an 80 score! I am like you, high 70’s most days with an occasional 80 or more frequently, a very low one if I have a terrible night. I look for the deep sleep score as I find it so fascinating how some nights I Can have 1hr plus and others I get literally 5 minutes deep sleep!

Another dry weekend under my belt and as predicted I am starting to feel fresh, brighter, healthier! My food this weekend was good, I didn’t fall into the trap of replacing alcohol with snacks. I went for a run, hip feeling good, a little tender this morning.
this week my biggest aim is to drink more water especially at work, and to limit fruit consumption as I ate a lot last week. I’ve not bought anywhere near as much ‘luxury’ fruit this week, no berries or soft fruits for example, to try to limit my grazing.

it is a thoroughly marvellous feeling to find myself on Monday morning, well rested and going into school feeling that little tiger starting to roar for the week ahead! Have a great week everyone!

Every time I do W30 I wake super early- but this time I haven’t been. I was actually thinking today that obviously that means somethings not working right yet.

your lockdown sounds horrible. Here in the uk literally every adult pretty much is vaccinated, we are even doing vulnerable kids now, 3rd doses for some this winter- and our cares are still high, and our death rate is still rising?! So when is this ever going to end? But we are all ‘free’ , no restrictions, no masks, no social distancing? My daughter has been back at college 2 days and is now isolating waiting for a Covid test! 2 days!

@SchrodingersCat I suppose because you are experienced in this now, you know that you can have something on your birthday that you’ve reintroduced successfully before? For me that might be a glass of wine or two, keeping food compliant?

this time I am determined to go longer than 30 days without a drink. I really want to see the benefits of long term abstinence, I only ever do 30 days although I do that fairly regularly (3/4 times a year?) but usually day 31 is a big celebration (eg I’m going to do 30 days until my birthday/ holiday/ end of school term) abs therefore I immediately resume drinking to excess! So I really want to see what happens if I were to do 60/100 days? 100 days would take me to mid December.

@MadyVanilla you absolutely CAN Do this!
does your gym do any outdoor classes? I joined one pre-Covid that does outdoor bootcamp and circuits classes and I love it! I never thought I would do classes like this. Of course during the pandemic, they were able to still operate at times when the other indoor gyms had to close.
you could also look on YouTube for videos if you’re not ready to rejoin indoor classes? There are so many on there, something for everyone.

I hope you have a good day today!

@MadyVanilla I tend to replace it with a very cold sparkling water, it is the only thing really that’s ‘dry’ enough. However I’m not really missing alcohol (yet) because I was feeling so horrible after drinking a lot all summer that I’m really enjoying the break!

@SchrodingersCattry the recipe in the well fed cookbook. Instead of using crushed pork rinds, I roll mine around in nutritional yeast and it sticks to the wet meat and makes a nice coating.
I really find that the 2nd weekend not drinking is where it really turns for the better so I am excited for that. We have a family party this weekend but I am determined to stay off the wine.

day…ooh… 5 for me today.  Still feel tired, still stupid hot here. I feel horribly bloated with the heat and I haven’t run for two days and that makes me grumpy too. So not really nice to be around! the heat will subside overnight and hopefully with the rain it will take away my retained water!
my dinner was delicious though, it was from the slow cook recipe book, island short ribs - but I made it with diced beef and I didn’t slow cook it. Next time I will make it with chicken thigh meat, the beef was a little dry but the flavour was immense, really tangy and sweet! Yum!

I can’t help with a date but I will say this: you’re thinking of this (understandably) as a frightening thing because you are imagining it from you, now. But you will very quickly see that this is not some hideous punishment, but the single greatest act of self care you can show yourself. Your body will very quickly reward you for this. It’s so very, very worth it. That feeling will go a long way to replacing the crutch you currently get from those foods.
    Good luck.

@christine19 sorry to hear about your friend. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with eating to be kind to yourself in these circumstances. You know how to pull it back if you feel that you need to.

I did R1D4 yesterday, it went well. I made some sofrito chicken which I had for lunch with salad and mayo, and for dinner I had a lemongrass Thai curry with coconut and cauliflower rice. Really tasty, lots of veg. I did only have 2 meals yesterday however. I find when I am not running that my appetite drops significantly. I am just going to follow my appetite and eat when hungry today also but if I continue not running then I will probably start enforcing the 3rd meal even if it’s only a small one.

I’m not running because of an ongoing painful hip, and while it is significantly improved it isn’t right yet, and I keep letting it get almost better then running on it when I actually need a few clear days before I resume. It’s ok yesterday and today, I have a fitness hiit class tonight and so I will see how that affects it, and may resume running.

today marks 9 months since I first started my first R1. To think on one hand I could probably count the occasions I have eaten non compliant food (if we don’t include wine!) in that time. I am really proud of myself. I wish I felt a bit more ‘tiger blood’ today to celebrate my achievement but anyway, I know I have done something really amazing for my health and the tiger blood will return.

That’s brilliant. One thing I noticed when I did my first W30 was I suddenly felt like I had more time. I think it was because I just didn’t slump in the afternoons, and like you say instead of wanting to veg out in the evenings, I wanted to do things. I did all my kids baby photo albums that had been hanging around for 8 years!!

So a week of healthier behaviour has paid off for me. I feel much brighter. My leg is still a bit sore to be honest, and I’m not running anywhere near as many miles as I have been it as I would like. I need to get back into daily yoga and generally self care a bit.
definitely I know that 3 meals a day and no snacks is working better for me. I did weigh myself a few days ago and I was shocked to see I had gained 7lbs since 1st April! The following day I was very strict, I cut carbs right down and tracked what I ate, and the following day it was gone, so it was clearly water retention but even so. It gave me a little shock!

we are going to Devon tomorrow to Sunday, and then on Monday I return to work, so I am determined to begin a full round of 30 days (fully, alcohol free and totally on it) beginning Monday 19th which will take us nicely up to mid May and hopefully the start of summer!

@SKUtahyep, grazing is my worst habit. I really do believe it is a habit too, as in it is something I can change with practice, but it’s a behaviour I often revert to when I am tired or stressed. I feel so much better when I don’t do it though, I am very insulin sensitive and grazing really plays havoc with that..
I had a horrible day yesterday, felt really tired and washed out, had a nap mid afternoon which is very unlike me and just couldn’t shake the sleepy, worn out feeling all day. I ended up eating a lot of carbs and drinking wine which was not really a good idea. It all started with some NKD bars (uk version of larabars) which clearly although are technically compliant, they are not worth it one bit.

going away for a long weekend at the sea today, so I’m a bit worried about food and how that will pan out. It’s the first time I have headed out into the world with nothing prepared as back up and not really knowing where or when we eat.

Welcome both! These forums are pretty quiet, it can be a bit of a ghost town.,
I did my first W30 in July and then never really stopped, I reintroduced wine and then.... nothing. So I am still sugar, dairy , grain, soy etc free and going strong!

easter was tricky but I am so proud of myself to not succumbing to chocolate, especially as I could have legitimately ‘reintroduced’ some!

I will also add as I have just reread my posts on this thread, I feel SOOOOOO much better when I eat 3 meals a day and don’t graze and I am absolutely going to work at getting that rhythm back into my life. Waiting 4-5 hours between meals really works for me but it takes me a few days to get into the swing

Rebecca001 got a reaction from Nedster7 in First week down, 3 to go
@Nedster7 for breakfast and lunch I eat different food to the family, and I usually have the same sort of thing for both meals. For evening meal we usually have the same protein (eg tonight we are having chicken in a curry sauce) but they have rice or potato wedges and I have cauliflower rice and/or salad. I eat a LOT of salads. I like the recipes but they can be fiddly but I find the variety really helps me stay on track so I try to do a bit of both.

I simplify my meals a lot: tinned fish, chicken thighs etc plus salad. I cook two roasts on a Sunday and that does me 3 or 4 meals extra, and I cook extra carrots and potato which I keep in the fridge. I think you have to prep well in advance, and especially with families (I have 3 children and husband and my hands are full so I do not know how you manage with 7!!)
every Sunday I do a big ‘cook up’, chop loads of carrot sticks, boil some eggs, make my mayo, and sometimes in the week I do it again if I run out. I also do a super shopping list and check the dates on everything and use my freezer so I actually have enough to last the full week. I’m in the Uk so we have zero w30 approved products and I’ve stopped looking now, I just make my own. I will say though, I never thought I’d have the energy to do this at first but once the tiger blood kicks in suddenly you just have time and motivation and it doesn’t feel like such a burden!

Rebecca001 got a reaction from SugarcubeOD in day 14: I've forgotten the point?
I can’t tell from your post if you are male or female, not sure if that matters but from my perspective as a female runner I just wondered.

before I came to w30 I was just like you: run a lot, eat a lot (of ok but pretty crappy food), run a lot, eat a lot.... yada yada. Just on this cycle. I was always chasing the last few vanity pounds and never getting there and  guess unlike you, I did want to lose some weight. As soon as I came to W30 I felt like the balance switched, like a jigsaw piece slotting together. Suddenly my food was my fuel, not my reward, for my training. I was running a lot, body weight /hiit training a lot, and I just felt amazing. I would say that if you are eating that much fruit it’s too much; you’ll never flick that metabolic switch if you eat that much sugar. My advice is rather than carb load, get your protein in and cut out the sweet tasting goodies (the sweet potato, the fruit, the dried fruit etc) - that’s if you actually want to do that?
I think like you say it is psychological to a degree, and I suppose w30 forces us to look at our food behaviour that’s taken a lifetime to form. The actual food for me is secondary to the psychology. I know that I feel better physically when I don’t eat sugar, but oh boy, I feel better emotionally when I don’t eat it. I have control over my food and don’t binge or have any food guilt whatsoever any more. I think women may experience this more than men, hence my question at the start

aside from sugar, the dairy and grains are the big enemy for me, I had a taste of chocolate 2 weeks ago and my metatarsal/toe joints swelled so much I couldn’t get my trainers on?! You may find that you can reintroduce dairy/grains (so your cream on granola, which sounds immense by the way!) but before you can do that you need to complete the 30 days. You might be surprised by the result when you reintroduce them
of course, you don’t have to do this. You sound like you are happy with where you are, you don’t have to eat this way. My husband is a runner too, he eats crap most of the time, drinks beer, he’s 10 stone dripping wet and had never restricted a food or read a label in his life- and he’s faster than me and never injured. In spite of this, I still love him haha
