Hokay... I've been doing so great while on my own these last 3 weeks, but this is going to be the true test - going home to my bf and keeping myself from joining him on the couch eating chips! Wish me luck!!
Day 22 -  perhaps I feel the tiger blood? (I don't know really, working 28 days straight of 12 hour shift is EXHAUSTING on a good day, so I think that may be obscuring my results), but I have felt in rather good spirits for the last week or so, so perhaps that is it. I have noticed though, how CLEAR my skin is (and believe me I notice every little blemish on my face), and how great food tastes (food is so naturally sweet, I dont know how I didn't notice before), and how few cravings I've been having (although just thinking of going home gives me cravings of my usual celebratory off work meals...).

Can I just pat myself on the back for a second
I am a HUGE comfort eater!! Being sick is one of those times I WANT/NEED comfort food!!  I don’t have an appetite right now per say but I have killer cravings and habits calling to me big time!! I want sugary sprite, I want cold ice cream, I want warm, homemade, thick noodled, chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers. I want my dads chocolate chip cookies and I want my grandma to bring me orange popsicles. I want all of those things to make me feel better!
And you know what….. I haven’t touched any of them. I’m in my emotionally weak place and I’m still staying on plan (I mean other than the one cough drop I tried that did nothing for my sore throat).
These are the moments I usually cave and say screw it! Give me all the chocolate! But this time I’m not. This time I’m reminding myself that the bigger picture here is caring for my MS and body in a way that maybe, just maybe I will get sick less often. This isn’t just about swimsuit season anymore. It’s about my health.

    i got this.

    we all got this

Last night I dreamt about accidentally eating off-plan!
The dream included a scene where the police were dragging me and my family off. I was rummaging through a drawer finding snacks for my son. In real life, the snack drawer contains roasted seaweed, rice cakes, nuts, corn nuts, Lara bars. In the dream it was like kind of gross, low-end junk food, store-bought cookies, none of them in their packages, sticky with jam...

As for the MSG thing. It seems in all the years I have been aware of the Whole30, very minimal changes have ever been made.

She started labeling Lara bars and Rx bars as only partially compliant aka emergency food only because they are easily food without breaks for most people and easily trigger the sugar dragon. She also totally nixed plantain chips which honeslty made me sad because I love plantain chips and homemeade guacamole.

As for add ins. I think MSG and white potatoes are all I have ever seen her add back in as okay.

Anywho. It appears things are not done at random. She always has good reasoning and typically science backing info.

as @itskatiegirl11mentioned anything could be food without breaks  while it’s just fine for someone else. I think one of the biggest bases of Whole30 is to pay attention and take the time to learn you and your body.

ps. My covid and strep tests were negative. I just have a cold.

have you read Melissa's new information on MSG? I admit I don't know much about it myself, but she claims most of the information that came out about it being 'unhealthy' was directly related to racism and anti-asian sentiments. I've never cooked with it myself, but I know others who were quite excited as it allowed them to have more of their traditional flavours while doing Whole 30, which definitely helps when you are otherwise restricting yourself while on the program.
I think the idea of 'food with no brakes' can be different for each person. For example, fresh fruit can sometimes trigger people, but I certainly cannot see myself sitting down to a whole bunch of bananas, or a bushel of apples. So perhaps this is a similar case? For some it may trigger, for others it is a nice accompaniment to their traditional values and flavours.
If Melissa hasn't found scientific reason to doubt it any longer, I'm happy to follow suit. <shrug>

    I found this on the Whole30 page…..
And if it’s a matter of taking the Nyquil and sleeping through the night, or sticking to the Whole30 and being miserable, well… sweet dreams. (We’re pretty sure no one sips Nyquil for the sugar hit.)

nowhere in the article does it say you need to start over either. I think I will try one lozenge and if it works miracles I will sneak another one or two in until I can get to the store to find sugar free ones. there hasta be sugar free ones.

The article also listed some herbal teas and stuff that are approved. So I will look for those.

re: tater-tots! Ok, like a potato croquette type thing? Mash potato inside, coated outside? My kids would love them! Lots of brands of potato products here have dextrose in them, in fact a lot of stores own brands have every single potato item with dextrose added <Morrisons> To make them crispy. Sometimes it’s easier when it’s just ‘no’ to all isn’t it? I find you can’t beat a roast potato, made properly with love and duck fat. Joyous!

tiger blood? Yes I think I’m starting to feel her roar! I ran 16km yesterday and at times I felt I was flying, really energised. I’ve got the tell tale sign (for me) of wanting to throw the windows open and clean/tidy/organise my life, it’s usually an indicator for me as I feel so motivated and energised. Yesterday afternoon I sorted out a full sack of clothes and put them on Facebook Free stuff and got rid of them, and also cleaned my house from top to bottom. I did nearly 30k steps in total! So yes, I am definitely feeling the tiger blood in there somewhere.

my boy is still off with covid so I am working from home today ( hopefully the last day)

Well shyte. I’m sick. My youngest was sick last week. Covid negative. I now have the same symptoms he did. Yay me!! No wonder I have felt so run down. This stupid thing was brewing.

I tend to not take care of myself when I’m sick though. I mean I’m a mom. So today I still cleaned the whole house. Toilets and all. Meal prepped a little bit of meat and fed my family. I didn’t eat much at all today but I’m ready for tomorrow if my appetite is back. Now I’m lying in bed praying my body isn’t too angry tomorrow.

hahaha. I just proofread my post. I promise I washed my hands between the toilets and meal prepping
hope everyone has a good day tomorrow.
    night all

On the tater tot discussion: for me, that would qualify as "French fries" or "food without brakes" or "chips," all no-no's on the Whole30. But some of the rules seem kind of arbitrary... so maybe tater tots are okay?
There was also a crazy band called Tater Totz in the late '80s/early '90s. Did a smashing, 12-minute cover of Yoko Ono's "Don't Worry Kyoko."

Interesting! I find that I'm ravenous, but I eat big fats and proteins to satiate myself, instead of carbs. Having done Whole30 before, I'm not focused on portion sizes or meal templates or any of that, mainly just compliant food. For me, if I'm hungry, I gotta EAT. Must be cool to not be hungry!
Also funny: Melissa Urban is very strict about how it is "not hard" to drink coffee without milk or cream in it... but my first W30 I had trouble with that. I'm allergic to nuts and coconut, so I can't put a substitute in my coffee! And it was fine. I ended up staying on black coffee (decaf) after my first W30. Haven't missed the half-n-half at all, and that was nearly five years ago.

The dr. prager ones are technically complain (the ones for kids). They have egg in them so my son can't have them, so I have never bought them. Not sure how crispy they get but they are veggies and potatoes with egg and arrowroot powder. That brand is pretty pricey though. I do like their veggie burgers, though I am not sure if any of those are compliant.

I signed up for daily Whole30 text messages when I started. They are promoted as being daily encouragement from Melissa herself. Of course they are computer/auto generated but they are nice to get. The one today made me laugh and feel better about life. If you don’t get them, here it is.
“Whole30 Day 14! Hey, are you doing the PERFECT Whole30? No? Good, because it DOESN'T EXIST. Not every meal will be a colorful rainbow. Snacks will happen. Over-eating almond butter might happen. If you're me, microwaving Whole30 Approved hot dogs and eating them with my bare hands happens like once a week.
I have a saying here: Let good enough be good enough, especially when things are THIS uncertain and stressful. Are you eating Whole30 food? SUCCESS. (Love, Me)”

Your totally right. There's a fine line that's easily crossed recreating a food that's in itself unnatural, and how that can trigger the brain in a way that's not in line with the spirit of the whole 30. And while I think the boundaries of that trigger is probably quite individual, a stance overall for the program is an important note.
This is the ingredient list: Organic coconut meat, organic coconut water, unrefined virgin coconut oil, cinnamon. So not a single ingredient, but still certainly compliant when broken down to the ingredient level.
As an aside lol I keep checking the frozen veggie 'tater tots' at the grocery store to see if they are compliant, and nope, still haven't changed! LOL ahaha

That's what I did with my cod, it had a crust of ground garlic cloves, fresh thyme and salt.  I drizzled it in olive oil then baked it in foil.  To be honest it was even better the next day as left overs as the garlic had really worked it's magic overnight.

I am eating a lot more meat and protein than usual. My body just loves this. Within days, I somehow feel better. I lose puffiness in my face, my pants fit better. I don't know if it's *because* the fats and proteins and animal-food are so desired by my body, or because my body's delighted *not* to be dealing with a bunch of sugar and processed carbs and legumes. In any case, it's sure nice.

Cooking-wise, my favorite W30 thing to do: at night before bed, put a couple sweet potatoes or yams in the digital oven, and set a timer. Wake up to wonderful smells in the house, and something warm and yummy and compliant to eat.

Hi friends! Today is day 14 and while it hasn't been extremely difficult so far, I'm hitting a point where my willpower is having to take over completely. I'm not having difficulty staying on track, its just that nothing is appetizing anymore. I tried a whole30 recipe I was SOOOO looking forward to, nope kinda weird. Ordered my favourite Tom Kah from a thai place locally (I was happily surprised it was compliant!), it was kinda meh too. Only thing that got me excited, was realizing my favourite dairy free cheese was technically compliant, so I topped my taco bowl last night with that and was a little more satisfied.
Don't get me wrong, meals are satisfying my hunger, but not my enjoyment of the food. Is that part of the point of the experiment (less reliance on food for enjoyment and more for sustenance?)? Is that a byproduct of not eating the highly flavoured processed foods? To be honest, off plan foods aren't even getting me excited, so at least its easy enough to stay on track.
Hit me with your favourite recipes that arent too... weird? (and by weird I mean, off plan style meals made to be on plan... if you know what I mean.)

I certainly will forge on... its not even difficulty, just lack of appetite or food boredom... but as I said, there are no cravings or want to eat anything non-compliant, so could be worse! (insert arms up questioning emoji here!)

Paleo Running Momma has a lot of good ones that I've made over the past week and a half. Not too time consuming and the non Whole30 husband is loving them. I am still struggling with taste and smell, but if he says they're good, (even with vegetables in them?) then they must be! :)
https://www.paleorunningmomma.com/paleo-burger-bowls-with-fries-whole30/ (probably his favorite so far and to cut time, I prepped the ground meet and potatoes on a Sunday, then did the meal on Tuesday.)
    https://oursaltykitchen.com/steak-fajita-salad/ (his second favorite)
https://unboundwellness.com/hamburger-steak-paleo/ (we made with venison, but also loved by him. Served with potatoes)

    Hope that helps!

That is rough! Definitely have gone through that before. I love eggs (and gave them up for almost a year for my son's allergies) so right now I am loving eating my runny eggs right now. In previous Whole30s though I definitely got bored and nothing sounded good. When this happened I would go out to eat. Something about someone else making something for me definitely helped. If you are in the US, chipotle is easy since it is Whole30 approved for certain items. I like In N Out for burgers (just no fries! boo!). You can also make it work at a lot of other restaurants, just trying to give you some easier/bigger chains. I also like Whole Foods hot bar/salad bar. If you plan your meal smartly, it is a good deal. My dinner last night was under $7. Just load up on lighter items since it is by the pound.

I'm snacking on dates after dinner, sometimes I stuff them with a little almond butter. (I know that sugar after dinner is frowned upon, and I should be a good girl and have a cup of herbal tea instead). As the challenge goes on, I'm going to them less and less, and they seem to get sweeter and sweeter. A little berries and cream would be nice too, or some frozen cherries let to defrost a little.
