jtota got a reaction from ana77 in Any vegetarian/vegan success stories out there?
Hey former-ish vegan here. I'm in the middle of my first Whole 30 now. I went vegan over the last two years after meeting Tony Horton's vegan chef through facebook, and after reading and watching forks over knives. She taught me a lot about nutrition and I did several food centered cleanses (much like a whole 30) under her guidance. I was feeling pretty good after the last cleanse. My skin looked awesome, hair had grown about 2 inches and was thicker. I was eating all kinds of new stuff - quinoa, various beans, tempeh, kale, etc but I kept hearing about Paleo and was curious. Despite my vegan switch, I still looked like crap, I think due to all the wraps, oatmeal etc. I kept reading paleo success stories, so when I read ISWF I thought, I can try it for 30 days and see if it's for me. Anyway, I don't see how I could do the Whole30 as a vegan or even a vegetarian. I can only eat so many eggs. And I find the whole "some things are ok if your a vegan" thing confusing. Wouldn't that compromise the results? I wanna know once and for all if this really works - 100%.
I can say this, meat and eggs are a lot more expensive than beans and quinoa. And my vegan chef friend said this diet would not be sustainable long-term, but I did not believe her until last night when I about exploded with cravings. And it's not so much that I want to eat cake, I just want some beans in my chili .
I guess I have a few big concerns to work through. I went vegan for health reasons, and maybe I'm just brainwashed, but I just feel like eating so much meat long-term may be unhealthy. I mean I feel better, I think, but I am hungry despite eating alot. And I mean a lot. Also, my sinus congestion is back along with chronically itchy skin. I shall have to see if these things work them selves out in the next few weeks. And perhaps my grocery bill will even out too.
For those of you who were vegan and switched to paleo due to health reasons, do you feel like this is a better way to eat long term? Will/did you go back to a vegan/vegetarian diet after your whole30? Do you notice any changes in energy, exercise performance etc compared to your vegan days? I'm so curious to know. . .

Seems like there's is a lot of confusion out there about eating this way as a vegetarian. I can say that it is hard but it can be done for 30 days. Vegans eat a lot of grains and beans but if you remove those things and focus on dark green veg and approved foods like tempeh and edamame you can absolutly meet your protein needs. You just have to plan. I would also suggest adding in some eggs or protein powder. I know smoothies are frowned on here but you have to admit - a green smoothie full of veg is better than a bowl of quinoa or oats (for whole30 purposes). There is a huge difference between a vegan/ vegetarian that eats boxed processed junk and one that eats truly plant based foods. It is likely that the vegans/vegetarians that are getting sick are not truly eating whole plAnt based foods or balancing their intake appropriately. To be healthy on veg you need a lot of education and planning. You can't just eat convenience foods and expect to meet all of. Your requirements - paleo or not. Just my 2 cents though.
This can be done, just have to commit to it and plan.

I like this idea. I may try making this cupcake-style. I drive all day for work and need something I can eat while driving. And I like to go to CF at 1200 so this would be perfect. question though - would it also serve as my lunch if the portion is adequate? Or do I eat again awhile later?

IMO, postWO is something you eat because you need to. Making it fancy or expecting something that tastes amazing doesn't really feature high on my list of priorities

Cold chicken breast and sweet potato is tasty
A bit more effort, but you could grate the sweet potato, mince the chicken breast, smoosh it together with some egg whites and herbs and spices then bake it like a slice.

Hi everyone! I have been off the forums for a very long time. Took a long break from all things diet related and just tried to take care of some personal stuff. I know now that I was not ready for a massive change when I attempted this before. In a much better place with a fresh perpective and ready to go again. I'm starting today and ready to see how the whole 30 affects my new love- Crossfit! Ready for energy, better sleep, and a very dead sugar dragon

Happy Day One!!  I just had the most delicious breakfast of spinach and onions cooked in ghee, plus over-easy eggs.  And of course my black coffee.  I actually like black coffee, and wonder why I was putting cream in it to begin with.....

Just a little something for the newbies that are having cravings already . . .
It is useful to know about the Extiction Burst:
    http://youarenotsosmart.com/2010/07/07/extinction-burst/
"If someone's gained some reward every time for a particular behavior, the
behavior will persist. If suddnely the reward stops coming, it's likely
that the person or animal will not immediately give up the behavior.
Instead, they'll try it again and again, harder, faster, more emphatically.
It's a burst of activity. If the reward still doesn't come, eventually
the behavior will extinguish, or become extinct. So, the burst of behavior
before extinction of the behavior is called an "extinction burst"."
This helped me greatly on my first attempt at a whole30. It is why giving your body the opposite of what it craves (sugar), or going for a walk instead of eating, works to stop the cravings.

Thanks everyone for the support. The calorie thing is the hardest part for me. Ive been doing it for so long I can do it with out even needing a calculator. The numbers I gave were an estimate but im sure they were close since I haven't greatly increased my intake from before we started, just modified what I am eating.
Last night was the only bad meal and honestly it was not the worst I could have eaten, I did what I could given the situation. Back on track today. Just sucks that I have to "start over".

1st off, I'm new and only on day 2.  So I really don't have any advice.  However, I did recently see a post about being super hungery.  The advice on that thread was to ensure you have enough protein and FAT.   The post was titled "Day 2 over - very hungry - am I doomed" if you are interested.

I've been reading and catching up on this thread and wanted to say THANK YOU to all of the people who had such kind supportive words to say, not just to me, but to others who shared parts of themselves in this thread. I am not very good at being open about things like this and you made it possible for me to share memories that I haven't shared with anyone other than a couple select family members.
I was inspired to come over to this thread this morning after something very nice happened to me this morning. So here's a little story for you all that literally just happened an hour or so ago that reminded me that beauty is subjective but it's okay to acknowledge your own...
I work on an ivy league college campus FULL of traditionally gorgeous co-eds. As a staffer, I'm used to sort of being in the background of college life. I walked into Starbucks this morning, as I do every morning, and ordered from the new guy - very young (I'm 35..he was probably 20?) and quite handsome, although I admit I didn't really notice until he started talking to me. He took my order and then said, "You know, your necklace is beautiful." I thanked him and said it was my grandmother's. He said she must have had great taste. I gave him my credit card and he asked for my ID, as I have "ask for ID" written on the card. But then he just held on to my ID and kept staring it. I was starting to get uncomfortable when he looked up and said, "Sorry, I was doing the math. Are you really 35?" At first, I was like, who is this freakin' kid and why is he announcing my age to all of Starbucks? Does he think I look 45?? But then he was like, "I'm sorry. It's just, I saw your wedding ring and assumed you must have gotten married really young because I really thought you were a student." At this point, everyone behind the counter has stopped to stare at him with looks of utter terror on their faces because I think they thought I was going to flip out. I said, "Well thank you, but I am indeed 35 with a two year old kid and I haven't been a student in almost a decade. You made my day, though!" He told me he swore it wasn't a line ("I have a girlfriend!," he said.)...he really just thought I was the prettiest woman he'd served coffee to all morning and he wanted to let me know.
The moral of this story is that he didn't see the poochy post-baby belly that I see, or the chubby fingers that I despise, or the uneven pigmentation on my arms and legs, or hastily pulled back hair because I desperately need a haircut, or the imperfect teeth that show when I smile. He saw beauty. We should all see in ourselves what others see in us.
Anyway, sorry for the novel. I just had that happen this morning and instantly thought of this thread. Hope everyone is well.

    DAY 4:
    Meal 1:
3 egg omlette with asparagus, bell peppers and zucchini and black pepper
    ½ avocado
    ½ sweet potato
    Coffee with coconut milk
    Meal 2:
    Spinach
    Olive oil
    Sweet potato
    Jerk chicken
    Blueberries
    Green tea
    Mineral Water
    Meal 3:
    1/2 yam
Egg white omelette with black pepper
    1/2 avocado
    Chicken broth with zucchini
    Mango
Dinner tonight was strange....running out of cooked food...need to make more stuff. Funny, seemed like so much food and lots of containers in the refrigerator on Saturday...but I guess that's when I'm used to leftovers for lunch or dinner...but eating them 3X a day...it goes so fast! Heading to the store to get more groceries and then prep a few things...lesson learned (:
Still a bit tired...no workout today.
Two things at work today - boss brought cookies...looked at them but was NOT tempted. Also, boss took us to Peets for coffee...would normally get a latte or frapp....but got an iced coffee and back at the office I put in some coconut milk...yay me.
Hope everyone has a good evening...on to day 5!
