    Wow!
For that price I'd buy a Poundland BBQ and have a crack myself

The cells of plants are surround by a cellulose wall. We cannot break down this wall - herbivores rely on bacteria to break it down for them; for example the cow with its rumen, or the rabbit that eats its own droppings to have another go at it. So with raw vegetables many of the nutrients go right through us. In addition, some protective compounds will have negative effects (not a paleo example but consider the toxins in raw beans and how they need boiling to death to neutralise them).
Cooking breaks down the cell walls so we can absorb nutrients. Some are lost into the cooking water etc which is why I try to vary cooking methods. Tomatoes are more nutritious cooked because the lycopene is "unlocked".
Personally I think the "living enzyme" thing is woo. Our digestive systems produce all the enzymes we need.

Kim, if you have the time and inclination I found http://www.feedipedia.org/ fascinating for considering alternative feeds. Mind you, I was only looking on behalf of a small batch of rabbits!

Just popping in to say that after 4-5 months with no cycle, it has returned after a week-ish of not-quite-W30 (went strict paleo on the date I joined this forum, main difference seems to be dropping the occasional dairy and increasing fat content of diet). Unfortunately I'm still able and compelled to eat everything in sight - but at least I'm staying paleo while doing it!

My understanding of the different animals:
Beef cattle are usually reared on grass with hay/silage and some concentrated feed (which may contain soy and all kinds). Essentially grass is cheap and profit margins are very tight. We're not set up for feedlots. Dairy is more questionable - the diet is tightly controlled to maximise yield but still tends to be forage based.
Sheep - again, grass is cheapest and sheep can cope up on the moors and on poor ground. Commercial lambs usually have supplemental feed to fatten them up.
Pigs - are omnivores rather than ruminants, more "interesting" items can be recycled in to food.
Poultry - battery farms are accepted so lookfor free range if not organic.
    Basic guidelines here http://www.defra.gov.uk/food-farm/animals/welfare/on-farm/

NMG reacted to Tom Denham in Warning: rant about sourcing good food from farmers
Growing real, organic food is expensive. The margins in farming are thin and there are no bargains. When you find something for cheap, it was probably raised under conditions you don't want to know about. That is actually true of almost anything. For example, the cheap clothes at Walt-Mart were made in a factory in Bangladesh that fell down because the greedy owner added 6 stories on top of his existing building to crowd more workers in to increase production.
I made friends with an organic farmer several years ago and visit the farm every Saturday to pick up eggs, chicken, rabbit, and veggies. And to drink coffee and visit. He hardly makes a profit selling eggs at $5 per dozen and chicken and rabbits for $15 each. His profit in veggies is low too.
A lot of food that I prepare at home probably costs close to $10 per plate, at least some days, but I used to eat at restaurants all the time eating crappy quality food and paying $15 per plate, so I figure I am much better off than I used to be. And some plates that I prepare cost less than $5 each, so I figure it is really well worth it.

    Short answer - nope.

    Long answer - noooooooooooope

You can adjust your calories (roughly) up and down depending how you feel - remember they average out over the course of a day, a week, a month. If you're not hungry for M3, maybe have a little less for your next M2; and vice versa.

Understandable; but this is one reason we don't count calories We've to learn to trust our bodies. You'll get there!

Crashed and burned again today. No sleep, lots of stress, odd mealtimes..... Early bedtime and fresh start in the morning. I have stocked up today on more fresh veg, and I have an interesting aubergine recipe to try.

I guess I have made progress in recognising how good I feel on W30; how bland the junk food actually is; how much I prefer the W30 food, and how quickly I can get back on track?

I tend to buy in bulk, so often eat mainly pork until the freezer is empty (couple of months?), then mainly lamb after buying half a sheep, and so on. It averages out over the year!

You could try incorporating the fruit into the main meal? Berries and grapes go nicely on salads; a sharp apple sauce is divine with fatty pork; everyone knows about duck-and-orange. I'm pretty sure there's a Middle Eastern dish involving chicken, pomegranete, and pistachio nuts too.

This way you get the different flavour, the different nutrition, and enough of a sweet hint to not feel deprived - but you are using far less and it is...diluted...by the other food, IYSWIM? And it breaks the dessert habit. This seems to be my better option. Similarly, I pair friend plantain with a very savoury beef stew.

Sometimes life gets in the way of what we need to do. I'm also doing an extended W30 (don't ask me the maths!), but the reason behind my slip-up was at least a conscious decision and the after effects have been minimal.

I'm still struggling a little with meal timings - for example today I have only had two meals, but that is because my fatigue is in full force (M.E./CFS here) so I'm out of bed for a shorter time!

I am still surprised how much I get through in terms of volume of vegetables. I think I'm filling and emptying my fridge each week, for ONE person!
