  1. Ha ha, I couldn't say as there's no kitty here but it smells pretty sour which would probably be off-putting and you cover it tightly with cloth anyway so you'd probably be safe from rogue cat hair. Mine just sits on the countertop in the kitchen. Apparently on top of the fridge is a good place but I don't have enough space between the top of my fridge and the bottom of the shelf over it.
  2. I grew my SCOBY from a 325 ml store bought bottle of Mojo kombucha. You said your kombucha was homemade by a lady at the markets, right? If so, I imagine that would work! You should do it! (Says the girl who hasn't even tasted her first batch yet!) Will give you control over the sweetness and it's just really fun. Even if I hate mine I will have no regrets as the process has been so fascinating.
  3. For Susan, from Frank: Big green is pretty! Jealous of thick, spongy looking SCOBYs. Frank still looking a bit thin and fuzzy, even all submerged in liquid. I guess he is a yeast magnet.
  4. Whee, another one into the fold! Nice for me to have some more newbies to play with! _______________________ _______________________ I like those GT bottles you guys have, are they glass? They have nice wide necks. My saved bottles only hold about 325 ml (11oz) and have narrow necks like so ... Oh well, they will have to do!
  5. Derval, the FIZZ!!! And that's without a second ferment? You lucky lady. If mine doesn't fizz, I'm trying your recipe next time. KB, that's awesome news. You must have a shy little late bloomer who is finally blossoming and will accomplish awesome things. (Tell it I said that. Late bloomers need lots of encouragement). Love the herbal tea flavouring. So many things to try. Come ooooon Frankie. Also, Frank has turned himself into a taco. Really, he's folded himself in half, but pointing up not down. He's so busy. I hope he's not distracting himself with acrobatics when there is kombucha making to be done.
  6. Exciting! Have you started thinking about flavourings yet, or are you going to go plain for the first batch?
  7. Cheers Susan! I guess I'm worried I'll end up with this paper thin pancake baby which will disintegrate when it's time to bottle and I have to move it! Have to have faith
  8. Question! I started brewing my first batch on Tuesday and things appear to be progressing well. Lots of yeasty threads, brew is quite murky and getting lighter, Frank is a busy bee and has moved around a bit, currently hanging out near the top. Here's my question: a film has grown right across the surface of the brew - is this my baby? If this is the case, how is it ever going to get thick enough for me to be able to move it? Or is the baby that big clump? I thought the clump was yeast as there are lots of yeasty threads dangling down from that point and I thought it was just the top of the thread. Argh, so anxious! Looking for Tuesday when I'll start testing!
  9. Lily's so cute! Photo with beautiful girl + handsome booch = can't miss. praxisproject, I'm not an expert at all, but does it make you feel sick when you drink it? If I drink or eat anything which makes me feel sick, my general tactic is to cease and desist. Maybe try a bit more when you feel better - if it happens again, maybe it is the culprit. I wouln't have a clue how it interacts with antibiotics, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon Hope you feel better.
  10. ___________________________________________ I can't see a picture Edit: Spoke too soon, posted that and suddenly the pic was there. Impatient! Edit 2: Very nice! Go find it a nice home - I dropped $20 on my big jar and I'm happy I did it
  11. I think he realised there were some ladies interested in seeing him and that coaxed him out.
  12. ___________________________________________ Might be sooner than you think. Look what Frank just did: He was lying on the bottom of the jar before, now he's suddenly decided to lean up against the side!
  13. ------------------------------------------- He is a pretty handsome devil, hopefully it'll get passed down the line! +1 for a pic from Derval! Especially if we get lovely Lily as well!
  14. Do we really have to say it? It starts with P and ends with T!
  15. Lovely gift And the baby SCOBYs can dream of going to new jars! Frank is very shy. He is hanging out at the bottom and doing his best to make the tea all murky so I can't see him. Here is some of his handiwork. *proud mummy*
  16. He does annoy me sometimes but it's hard to look annoyed when you are also giggling and snorting at the same time. He has the stronger stomach of the two of us and I couldn't understand why he was so grossed out by all the SCOBY action. He said: "You grew it. It's your Frankenstein." Well, I guess I've found a name for my SCOBY at least.
  17. Hee hee, mental picture of frantic Susan: "I need clean towels and hot water! ... And some more jars!"
  18. That's what mine looked like when it got started! Scumfort City as DH commented last night with the most disgusted of disgusted looks.
  19. It will happen KB and LadyM, there is something going on at least, isn't there? Something a bit scummy looking? I just found the prettiest SCOBY ever on reddit. Apparently this is what happens when you use green tea and hibiscus tea to brew ... http://imgur.com/a/lPBAx?gallery#ReblCOu I think my SCOBY would probably try to jump its bones if it saw it.
  20. Scobes has been rehomed! Straight down to the bottom. Submarine SCOBY. (Sorry it's hard to see). No photos of hubby, sorry guys He was not in the photo mood. Wouldn't touch SCOBY. Pulled faces, just as I suspected he would.
  21. Awwwww, funny how people's minds work! Hee hee. I didn't have kale chips (duh) so I did my dairy re-intro instead
  22. Storytime! I will be waiting with my popcorn. I mean ... Actually. what is the paleo/Whole 30 popcorn substitute?
  23. We need more photos together. Our parents are on the "when are we getting grandchildren" train so perhaps a family photo with our new baby will shut them up for a bit. (Out of terror of what we'll sub in next!).
