Hi Becky, Lynn and C-Cezeaux!  Looks like we have quite a few W30 veterans here!   Yay!   I read through my old logs for prior rounds, and am remembering how great the support is on this forum.  And also remembering lots of recipes and habits, and am pretty psyched up to get going again!

Ann I feel ya with the scale.  I had put it away, but I guess my hubby took it out last night because there it was in the middle of the floor calling my name this morning .... I stepped around it, I stepped over it, and I eventually picked it up and put it away so I wouldn’t step on it.  Lol. That number obsession is real y’all!

Prepping for a January Whole30 (starting Jan. 5th to February 3rd). My first was in September. I felt REALLY REALLY good for several weeks after - but then the kids' Halloween candy started my downfall.
I've planned out my dinner menu (attached) except for the 3 days in February. I like to keep the sides a little more unplanned and decide closer to the day. However, I know this is a "plan" and part of that is knowing some days I may need to deviate. I did a ton of If/Then Planning with my first round and it was extremely helpful. If I don't feel like cooking what I have planned, then my backup meals are Whole30 Chicken Salad from WellPlated.com, pan seared Pork with whatever veggies I have to roast, stir-fry over riced cauliflower, or dinner out at Chipotle.
Other ways I've started prepping for the January Whole30 is getting back to drinking 80 ounces of water a day, paying attention to what I eat, and doing some workout videos; I want to incorporate exercise in to my Whole30 better than I did in September, and Tuesday (with two weeks' to Christmas day), I started some 2 Week Shred video on Youtube.

    Hi Becky,
Same!  It's sure a tough habit to kick.  My daughter is also doing a Dryuary, which will help, and my neighbors, who I have drinks with fairly regularly (we're on a trivia team at the local pub).
Since better sleep is high on my list of NSV's I'm looking for, I plan to turn in earlier than my normal for the next 30 days.  Maybe a longer bedtime routine, including some nice self-care (i.e., face mask, bubble bath, pedicure - not all on the same night !).  And yes, herbal tea or Pellegrino with a slice of lime or cucumber are my go-to alternatives to wine.
We got this.  Cheers ---- wait no ... I guess, just have a good night!

So far day 1 is going well. However, my resolve will be tested this week when i go to my favorite italian restaurant tomorrow (no wine, no pasta!) Then the next day, no garlic fries.  But, I will be with friends and family, so that is the most important thing to me.  Cheers to day 1!

    Hi Brianna,
If you scroll down a little way in the Forums, in the "Community" section there's a place for "Your Whole30 Log".  It's my favorite part of the forums, reading through other folks' logs for inspiration and a sense of community.
    Hope that helps!

Day 1... here we go here we go!
Two sunny eggs, spinach, mushrooms, shallot, and a bit of sugar free lardons to give it that ooh la la. Plus a boat load of awesome spice. Glass of water, and a bullet proof coffee—which was needed after NYE. Fun celebration, but now I’m celebrating my new fun...

CrazyCow, thank you SO MUCH for this recipe!  I'm totally going to make it.  I have a paleo sauces cookbook (Primal Blueprint, Mark Sisson) which I was thumbing through last night, and there are lots of them I'm planning to try in the coming days.

Ann reacted to Nan McG in My Second First Whole30
In January 2014 I completed my first Whole30.  It was the first time I ever stuck with a diet protocol to the "end," and although I didn't do all the things -- I didn't work out, I cheated and weighed in a couple of times, I indulged in a few technically-compliant treats, etc. -- it changed my life and my relationship with food.  For about the next five years I did a lot of n=1 experimenting.  I didn't get thin, but my health got better and better.
Then, in February 2019 I admitted to my doctor that I was frustrated with my very slow weight loss (about 15 pounds total in all those years) and was treated to a tirade of "It's-all-about-calories-in-calories-out" and "You-just-need-to-exercise-more" and "Tell-me-your're-not-one-of-those-bacon-worshipping-keto-crazies" etc.  And it really got into my head. I spent the past year alternating between thinking anything I eat is okay "in moderation" and being afraid of everything I eat.  I did greatly increase the amount and type of exercising I do, and I like that.  But here I am, back where I started six years ago, at exactly the same weight, and convinced I just don't know what I'm doing.
So I'm starting another Whole30.  The reason I call it my second first Whole30 is because everything I have learned in the past six years is going to make this a different Whole30 than the one I experienced in 2014.  This time I will be working out.  I will not touch my weight scale.  I will journal and do meal planning and take advantage of all the tools and motivation this community has to offer.  And I will not obsess about missing my daily hits of sugar and Diet Pepsi because I killed those addictions long ago.  It's time to take back my power.

Welcome to Day 1! I also have a really hard time staying off the scale, and can already hear it calling to me. I might need to have my husband hide it so I can't find it, haha.
    Happy New Year!

@Madeline368 - I have not done the texts before, so we’ll see how it goes.  I’m just surrounding myself with everything that might possibly help motivate me.  This morning’s text was pretty generic, but just seeing a text from Melissa Urban pop up on my phone this morning was kind of fun.

I'm so excited for tomorrow, you guys!   I'm 100% in and READY FOR THIS!!  Day zero, I guess you call today, and I did measurements and a last weigh in this morning.  Stashing the scale somewhere deep in my garage where it's hard to get to.  Aside from the wine dragon, I have a very hard time staying off the scale.  I'm going to work on staying focused on NSVs - primarily better sleep and decreased shoulder pain, but also general mood and energy levels.

Thanks, Ann! At least I know I’m not alone with not wanting to waste things, even if I know I should just give it up, haha. And thanks for your tip! Not being hungry is really my #1 priority because I will totally reach for unhealthy snacks. Thankfully I haven’t felt hungry so far. I feel like I’m getting a good amount of healthy fat. But I’ll remind myself to eat more if I start to feel deprived.

Happy New Year and good luck tomorrow on your Day 1!

Hi Jess.  Congratulations on getting started.  Tomorrow is my Day 1, and I can't wait.
You made me laugh at wanting to eat all the bad stuff so as to not waste it!  I actually had an extra roll of refrigerator sweet rolls .. you know, the kind you pop from the tube?  I had bought two of them for Christmas breakfast and we only made one.  I didn't want to toss the second one, and didn't figure it was something that would freeze.  So of course, I had to make it. And eat all of them on Sunday (with the help of my kids, thank goodness!).  And really, they aren't very good.  Why couldn't I just toss them?!
To me, it looks like you're not eating very much ... are you finding yourself hungry?  My typical breakfast has been a panful of sauteed spinach & red bell pepper, topped with 2-3 eggs, 1/2 avocado (or handful of olives), and a blob of pico de gallo.  Maybe even a slice of bacon.  From my own past experience, I know I totally reach for snacks between meals if I don't eat enough at mealtime (especially piling on the veggies).  And I (generally) eat this much (or more) at each meal, and have snacks in between if I get hungry, and have been amazed to have still dropped a few pounds each time I've done this.
Just my two cents, for whatever it's worth.  Happy New Years

I'm really nervous -- I've been planning and researching but I have never been the type to stick to something like this. I chose January 2nd because I'm going to a NYE party tonight where I know I'll be drinking, and I don't think starting Whole30 while hungover is the best idea. Plus I have the day off work tomorrow so I can spend the day shopping for my first week of meals! My sister in law is doing it with me but she lives across the country, so I'm hoping for some extra support on here. Here we gooooo!

I'm with you Ann...I am married to a master bartender who is always playing with some new flavor or another. And I am a happy taste tester...but I know giving those a  miss for fizzy water (with the just the right amount of lime) makes a huge difference. Doesn't make it easy, and doesn't make me feel great for recognizing it's something I will miss. I feel you!

I relate to “do I really need to do ALL of this?”   I am starting my #6 on Wednesday.  Shopped today and was really hoping to make chipotle mayo using homemade mayonnaise.  Disappointed to not find compliant chipotles in adobo.  And I’m in a city (Portland, OR) where it’s fairly easy to find specific dietary items (vegan/paleo/sustainable/etc).   So now I’m still deciding if I will use these chipotle peppers that have a bit of corn oil and even smaller bit of corn starch, or if I will find another compliant spicy thing to do with the mayo. Sigh.

Hi Ann! I love people who are transparent on their journals, and I love your picture of your sauces! Good for you for making them yourself, I just went to Whole Foods and bought the packaged compliant ones. I started my second round today mostly because I don't have any NYE plans. Excited to support each other!
