So who is ready to start a Whole 30 in February? Thought it more flexible to call it a February group because it can be hard to start on a particular day.
I am starting a preliminary Whole 5 today and starting the REAL Whole30 on Monday 4th February. I will use this week to practice but it is my husbands birthday on Friday and I am cooking lobster mornay and sticky date pudding! And on Saturday I fly to the Gold Coast to meet my new GRANDSON and I don't want to be an ungracious guest with fussy food habits to the new mother, my son and his in-laws who will be doing the cooking.
This is my second Whole 30 and I loved the first one and found it quite easy - I am an all or nothing person and the strict rules actually made it easier. I am a complete sugar junkie though and fell into terrible habits since Christmas and being away all of January up til now. I can't believe I put on 6kg in 5 weeks!!! So i need this 5 day prelim start to kick start me.
After my first one I continued paleo for a while, then reintroduced dairy and minimal grains. I then "quit sugar" and read a lot of books about that. Loved it and truly believe in everything I read. And NO sugar is so much easier than some sugar. Although on those plans you are allowed things with less than 2% sugar which makes it easier (allows in bacon and ham).
Last time I had a week lead-up time to prepare foods, stock the pantry, find new healthy food sellers and completely psyche myself up for a good pure start! And clear out the freezer of those not quite compliant meals (eg my last bolognaise sauce made from pasta sauce containing sugar!)
I'm from Sydney Australia and would love to hear from other Aussies but love reading posts from all other nationalities too. Posting and reading the forums really helps me stay motivated and keep on track. Fascinating too. Isn't technology amazing that we can communicate with such ease across the entire world. Particularly with a mini iPad in the handbag!
Look forward to hearing from you!

This is day 15 for me. Yeah! I'm halfway there! On days 11 and 12, I felt quite fatigued. After reading several posts, I realized I was possibly not getting enough fat at each meal. Since adding more, the fatigue has gone. Meal planning and preperation is getting easier. I look forward to trying more new recipes. My pants are looser. Before W30, my Waterloo was the evening hours between dinner and bedtime. I would find myself going to look for food even when I was not hungry-sometimes right after dinner. I rarely feel the urge now. When I do, I drink a large glass of water and find something to do. I still need to work on sleeping. Medical problems cause me to get up a few times at night and sometimes, because of pain, I have difficulty going back to sleep. I have seen a little improvement and I'm hopeful it will get even better. I'm thinking W30 will become W60 for me. Happy Valentines Day to all.

Starting round two today after an awesome round 1 and a total weekend bender of sweets and fat. It was fun weekend, but I feel horrible now and am really excited about seeing results again.
In round 1 my mind was clearer, my mood was more stable, and I lost 5 pounds of fat. The six pack was clearly visible again, which is nice. I'd say my winter depression is way less than last year (I live in Washington State), so that's nice. It could be Whole 30 or it could be the Christmas spend in Hawaii - not sure.
Round 2 will be easier because we've experimented with recipes, found some good go-to meal choices, and found places to buy paleo for way cheaper (hint: Costco).
Round 2 will be tougher because the novelty and excitement is gone. The most drastic results bodywise have probably already taken place, so it will be incremental improvement from here. It's going to take more discipline, more journaling, and more talking with my wife about how we stay on track and finish as strong in round 2 as we did in round 1.
    Looking forward to it.

Hi everyone. Day 2 and still feeling good! I'm interested in finding a "buddy" (as suggested my my Whole30 Daily email). Someone who has some similarities to me. I'm in my late 20s, mother of one, part time nurse, outdoor lover. I'd love to find someone to chat with, share recipes with and vent to. Let me know if you are interested!
P.S. As I re-read this it sounds kinda weird/stalker-ish. I'm really not crazy

Day 14! Whoohoo! Got a massage scheduled for 9:00 then to the hairstylist at 10:45! Yay me!
So glad I started this journey. We have been engaged almost a year now and were planning a December wedding in the Bahamas but we were thinking about how to get the most bang for our vacation buck and remembered our favorite vacation of all time was to our favorite vacation spot of all time...Siesta Key in late June. What's not to love about 16 hours of daylight? In December it's dark by 6:00 and the sun doesn't come up until almost 8:00! So that's less than 12 hours of daylight. What a waste. So...two weeks in SK it is. Get married on the longest day of the year, the first day of Summer. Awesome. Hence, I'm glad I started this journey.
I do feel like I have a bit more energy. And that's saying a lot because I am normally a pretty high-energy kind of girl. Went for a run/walk yesterday in the park. Wonderful. The sun was out. It was 40 degrees. Love it.
Believe it or not, I just planned my 2nd round! (April 25th, leaving time to finish the W30 and the 13 days of re-introduction that follows.)
I want to do one more before all the June festivities. Our nephew is getting married June 8 so we will have that to contend with but with all my knowledge and my new-found taste buds I can probably pass on the wedding cake or just enjoy three bites. (Remember in ISWF when she said you really, only truly enjoy the first couple of bites? So true.) I'd rather have a glass or two of wine to be honest. I am in this to slay my Sugar Dragon and never let it control my life again.
Didn't wake up hungry like yesterday. It could be because I ate less at dinner Sunday night? I don't know. I am still trying to figure this out...

I am starting my first whole thirty today and I am super excited. I have a killer headache but I know it can't last forever (right?). I have been eating Paleo for several months now but I am nervous about no Paleo desserts (I have a bad sweet tooth.) Also just starting Crossfit and I am absolutely loving it! I have two daughters, one ten months and one two, and I'm hoping to set a good example and establish a good, healthy relationship with food. Good Luck to everyone!!

I'm addicted to kale chips. I've made them several times this week. A big bunch of kale is only 99 cents at my market! I add a tablespoon of olive oil, toss well, and spread them out on a cookie sheet, then lightly add salt and pepper. I cook them for 10 minutes on 350, toss and add a few minutes as needed, keeping a close eye on them after 10 minutes. I've burnt many batches! I've found that darker cookie sheets need less time than lighter ones. They're sooooooo good and I love that I'm eating kale now. It's so good for you!

Was intrigued so made my first kale chips last night. I overlooked them and over seasoned them but I could see the potential. A bit weird but a good alternative when others are eating real chips. Who on earth thought of kale chips!
Went to my local organic shop, About Life, in Balmain and spent a fortune, over $200, but it did include organic chicken and sausages. I stocked up on coconut oil and milk and nuts. Bought several packs of "activated" nuts..... Will have to read up on that again and see if it is important...they are much more expensive.
Also bought walnut butter. I have loved my almond butter (compliant) but they were out of stock.
You should have seen me, walking around with my mini magnifying glass with its own light, analyzing all the labels, - I felt a bit eccentric! Some of those labels are designed to be too small to read, and the impossible yellow ink ones! Ha, I fixed them!
Didn't buy it but saw they had goose fat from France! Wow! I drew the line at duck fat. Also the label didn't say much, like whether they were nice free range natural eating geese.... Haha, I don't even know what good geese are meant to eat!!!

My house is NOT Whole30 this V-Day - which is my absolute favorite holiday. Seriously. I go all out the way some folks do for Christmas. But our ingredients will be darn close.
We're doing bacon hearts (pork belly, of course), pink pancakes (probably coconut flour), GAPS soft pretzels (pretzel dogs and cinnamon raisin) and chocolate dipped strawberry hearts.

Closing in on my first day, and it has been easy so far. Hah! day one. I even drank a cup of black coffee with just a little coconut oil in it. I'm used to cream and sugar. But I can learn! Committed to giving this the full 30 days.
Going to check around for tools here now. If anyone has pointers or suggestions, I'm all ears.
    Best to you all!

Am starting my 2nd Whole 30. Dragged my hubby into it as well and even though we weren't completely clean, he lost 22 pounds and I lost 13. It surprised us both, so these next 30 days we are challenging ourselves for complete adherence. We both sleep better and have eliminated many aches and pains. We were healthy eaters before but never eliminated the grains/legumes and believe that this has truly made a difference. To our surprise, we haven't really missed either food group either.
So here's to the next 30 days where we start back into an exercise program and clean eating.

Today was interesting. I looked in our pantry and there is not much there! A small section of stuff for my son's lunches and lots of coconut products, spices and coffee. Everything we eat now is in the fridge or onion/sweet potato bin. So strange! Feels good actually.
My husband used to complain about how leftovers did not get eaten. That is no longer a problem. Every bit of food that is cooked is eventually eaten. Leftovers are the new "convenience" food!

I'm coming up on the end of Day 7 and something interesting happened to me last night.
I got home from work around 9:45-10 pm and went to stir the almond butter that I had bought earlier in the day. I didn't really pay attention to what I was buying. Maybe this was intentional? Or just accidental, I don't know. But as I was finishing up with the almond butter I went to lick the knife and as I was raising it to my mouth I lifted the jar so I could read the ingredients...Ack! Dehyrated Cane Sugar, Palm Oil!!! Horror! My tongue had just lit on the tip of the knife and I got a little itty-bitty, tiny taste of the almond butter on my tongue. What was interesting was my reaction to the taste. Almond butter should not taste sweet....It was a real eye opener.
Sugar was the last thing I gave up as I weaned myself off the other "no" foods so I went into Day 1 cold turkey on sugar. It has only been seven days and I already am feeling the benefits of changing the food on my plate.
So, I have to find a home for this almond butter....

Wot everyone else has said. My father absolutely goes off the deep end at any mention of 'diet'. According to him, if everyone ate a balanced diet we'd have no problems. Trouble is his idea of a balanced diet is totally, grain, sugar and carb heavy. I explained this to him as an 'elimination protocol'. I explained I'd been having digestive problems and this was a regime I had to follow exactly for 30 days to eliminate all problematical foods and then I'd be reintroducing them to see which was giving me problems. (Actually I kinda tend to stick to W30 but that's neither here nor there). This avoided the whole 'You're so stubborn you won't even break your diet for one day' scenario. By making it about my digestive problems, it also avoided any hint of criticising his diet and kept everyone happy.

Man - some of you have tough families! I just went to a family gathering where there was pizza, chips, onion dip, crackers and olive cream cheese spread. The only thing I could eat was a small side salad. I knew this was going to be the case and had a big bowl of chocolate chili (W30 compliant) before I went there to make sure I was full enough to resist the temptations.
I agree with others - if you can't eat something before hand and you'll be there for hours before dinner, you could not even bring up the diet and just let her know that you'd love to make a dish to share (and just so happens to be whole30 friendly) or just tell her you are changing your eating habits and you obviously don't expect her to accommodate you, so you'd be happy to bring something to share with everyone. For me, the awkwardness of you heating up your own little dish SCREAMS, I'm on a special diet, whereas if you brought something everyone is eating, and just left off other things, people would barely notice and therefore not hassle you for your way of eating.

I would definitely suggest being upfront and honest with her as soon as possible. The earlier you let them know, the better. Just do it very politely, explain the Whole30 in simple terms (no processed foods, higher intake of veg, etc.).
After you've explained your situation, offer to prepare your own meal in advance. That way it's clear to her that you don't expect her to make a separate meal. Make it also clear that your intention of preparing your own meal isn't meant to insult her or her cooking, it's just to serve your dietary constraints. If you make your own meal to throw in the microwave and have given advanced notice, all should be good.
    I hope everything works out!

Hi Maya, it gets confusing doesn't it Wine vinegar is ok but sulfur dioxide is out, it's a nasty. There's a thread about it here
    http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/3047-sulphur-dioxide/page__p__25834__hl__+sulfur%20+dioxide__fromsearch__1#entry25834
I was the one who asked the original question and Tom Denham gave a really detailed answer which is why i remembered it Balsamic vinegar on its own without added nasties is fine. don't worry about the grams of sugar per serving. Lots of foods contain natural sugars, its added ones we're trying to avoid. Besides I doubt you'd end up drinking vinegar by the gallon so it's not likely to have an impact in the amoun you'll use.

So I am on day 8, and have been Whole 30 compliant until I realized that I have been using Pam this whole time and it has soy lecithin in it. I totally didn't even think about cooking spray!! oops.
Also, I have been using the light coconut milk in a can from Trader Joe's in my coffee, and this morning I put about an 1/8 teaspoon of Stevia in my espresso shot to break up the bitterness. It didn't taste sweet at all, but I know I broke the rules and will need to extend my time. I am wondering though, if you don't use enough to make it sweet (bc I am assuming we are breaking away from needing to make everything overly sweet and taste the food), then why is it bad?
I also ate a clementine alone....am I just failing left and right?
All I see in my head are Melissa's words...."drinking coffee black...is. not. hard." hahah. I guess this will be the Whole 38!
Any and all advice/suggestions is appreciated!
