    Hi everyone. I'm a lurker and first time poster.  I just wanted to thank everyone for this forum.  I browsed it a lot to get me through, and finished my first round of Whole30 yesterday.  I thought I might write a quick post to help someone else someday.

    About me:  I'm a mid 30's guy with a desk job and two kids.  For a decade, I've eaten junk and my body is paying for it.  I'm 5'8".  Ten years ago, I weighed 160.  On January 1, 2018, I weighted 191.8.  I got motivated and started watching what I was eating and walking a fair amount, and through that I dropped about 10 pounds.  Then, over a few months, I was stuck at 182 with no meaningful fluctuation.  I wanted a jump start and decided to try Whole30.
    30 days later, I'm 170.4, which is 11.6 pounds of loss.  More importantly, I feel much better, am motivated to get where I want to be, and am dedicated to healthier eating.  I'm so glad I did this.

    Things I did right:  I stuck to the plan, eating only permitted foods, and didn't break.
    Things I wish I had done: I didn't exercise at all.  I wish I had.  Some days I just felt so tired.  I should have increased fat and pushed through.
    What I relied on too much:  I definitely ate too much fruit and, towards the end, potato. 

    What I learned:  I have self control.  My body is my responsibility.  Also, it turns out I enjoy cooking and I actually like most vegetables.   Who knew?

    What now?  Now I'm in the reentry phase, and I'm going to do that for myself to see if I have any hidden intolerance.  Once I'm done with that - regardless of what it shows - I intend to go minimal dairy, avoid added sugars, and say no to bread for - well - foreever. Also, I'm determined to get back to 160 and reshape my body, so I'm starting a weight training and cardio plan.

    Can I just comment here that not everyone follows the timeline so if you're NOT experiencing the listed 'symptoms' you're not necessarily doing it wrong - also sometimes the expectation actually brings it on, which isn't always the best thing

    Before you post a question that starts with, "Can I have (insert food/drink/condiment here)," please follow these quick steps.

    1. Read this article, where we summarize the most common "Can I have" questions and answers! http://whole30.com/2013/06/the-official-can-i-have-guide-to-the-whole30/ If your food or beverage isn't listed there, then...
    2. Search this forum! (Google is the easiest way, simply google 'whole30 + item') Chances are, someone has asked the question before. If not...

    3. Post your question here, making sure the subject line includes the item in question. (Ex: subject, "Can I have kombucha?") (Include as much detail in your post including ingredients you would like to check as possible)

    I fear I am in the camp of someone that just wants to see newbies succeed, but also need to learn when the ST*U.
    Unless I can find a quote from a mod, I will put myself in time out for now.
    Just doing that because I had to try it .

    Welcome all newcomers, welcome back vets, and for those of you who never left...welcome to this post.
    I just wanted to pop in here and remind you all to take a deep breath before you dive into all the questions about what you can and can't have. The program guidelines are clear on what you can and can't have (grains, dairy, W30 muffins), but things get a little grey when people start talking about what you should and shouldn't have. Please don't over think think this. You don't have to address every food related issue you have, break every bad habit, and shun every food that gives you comfort to succeed with your Whole30. If you need to you can always extend or repeat the process, and things will get better each time you do. My advice to you is this:

    Stick to the rules like they are your port in a storm (really, they will become that).
    Take the Moderators responses seriously (we know what we're talking about).
    Take community members suggestions as advice from those who came before, but keep in mind they are not the rules and not the Mods. Everyone here is well-meaning, and everyone here wants to see you succeed, but everyone here is at a different place in this journey.
    And finally, take comfort in these words (from Melissa Hartwig, on another forum post):

    Here's the thing (and this is an interesting discussion)... there are Whole30 "rules," which are strict, clearly outlined, and very well defined. No grains - and here are all the things we consider grains. No dairy - and here are all the dairy items excluded. No Paleo-fied food choices, and here's what those look like.
    Then, there are Whole30 suggestions for success. They're not part of the official rules, but they're things that we've seen really help (or harm) people as they move through the program. Fruit smoothies for breakfast - not a good idea. Skipping breakfast - not a good idea. Eating every two hours, all day - not a good idea. These things won't necessarily affect your Whole30 results (although they might), but if we can give you additional suggestions that will make your transition and your program easier and more effective, we're going to give them to you.
    Keep Calm and Whole30 On.
