Anyone have advice on learning to run?

Oh yes, the "Eat all the things".... I get that afer a race as well... doesnt matter if its a 5k or a half, I am all about the food after. sounds like you made some good choices...I think i am going to pack myself somethings for after my leg of the marathon relay... I am really trying to stay on target with my eating until my 48 hour race on May 19th... so even though the spread of post race food at the marathon relay is always good.. going to bring some snacks of my own.... I think you going out for 8 miles this weekend is a good idea, tiny steps towards the HM goal.. Hope you feel better soon and do well in your stepbet challenge.

sounds like you had a great run.. and way to go... Running the whole way!!! I bow to you and your amazing 1:07!!! I think that is great!!!! hope your DH's foot is doing better... sounds painful.. but great job to him on his time as well!!! You can totally do a half marathon... its by far my favorite "short" distance.... it can be fun and most times you dont feel like the world is ending during it...

Kick some Butt at your 10K!! I am kicking off my next whole 30 on Monday... things have gotten... out of hand... and I am trying to get back to where I was in the fall. funny how stress can really sneak up on you... and I am going to use your "Get clean, then get hardcore" for my whole 30 next week... lots of bad food choices and not enough of the working out I need. never mind the fact that my hypermobile SI joint totally messed me up last week.... well that and trying to get into the front seat fo the fire truck with all of my gear on... lets just say that I had some piriformis issues before that, and after repeated in and out and climbing on top of the truck to help teach prbies left my sciatic in a not so happy place... I am finally in a good space right now and am able to run again. still have a weird patch of numbness in my calf, but much better than the searing pain from last week. looking forward to getting in a few runs this weekend. Alos getting back to the gym.. so the last piece of the puzzle is food....and getting back on that.. hoping I am ready for some good fall half marathons.

I made it to Day 24 and through what I can honestly say is no fault of my own, I ate pizza on Day 25 a little after midnight. I am a firefighter/Hazmat officer for a local fire department and on Wednesday, there was a hostage situation in one of our prisons. I left my office around noon, after eating my whole 30 lunch. I shortly there after was on scene at the prison for the next 16 hours. I grabbed the little snacks that I had with me, but after being on my feet for 11 hours in the chilly air, I was starving. There were no options for me to to even attempt to find complaint food, so I went ahead and ate the pizza that was provided to us. At the time being fueled to lead my team in a response seemed to be a much more immediate need. Ultimately the situation was ended around 5 am yesterday morning, where one of the hostages was pronounced dead. It was a very long night, with lots of emotions. I know that going off plan was not a result of a sugar dragon or letting food contorl me, but was due to serious extenuating circumstances. I did go back to healthy habits yesterday and today, because I know its the best way to fuel myself. My plan after this whole 30 was to eat whole30 about 90% of the time, so i am going to return to that now and treat that pizza as par tof my 10%. Everyone is doing wonderful, keep up the work.

Anyone have advice on learning to run?

@ThyPeace Yes, I am your basic science nerd who works in infectious disease epidemiology and I am the Hazmat officer for my fire station. I am sure we have lots of stories to share Let's see have a 5k in April and Part of a 4 man Marathon relay team in May.... then I have this ridiculous idea of running for 48 hours. As many miles as I can go... that is also in May... part of thisWhole30 was to get back on track for training. So I am ready for the long miles ahead. After that the summer is wide open and have 2 half marathons planned so far in the Fall... Not really sure when Half marathons became my go to race distance, but I do enjoy them Right now I am enjoying the new found freedom of not being a bread junkie... Before this whole 30 I knew I was in trouble because I actually was eating Bagels for breakfast and like grains with everything... unfortunately, that is not optimal for training for me or for me to feel great!!! How is the new lacing working out for you?

So happy to report that I have turned the corner on feeling blah and am starting to feel very WOOHOO!!! Went to a cardio kickboxing class with a friend on Tues followed by Fire training.... which involved Laying 5 inch lines from a hydrant and racking the 5 inch hose back on the truck... needless to say it was a Butt kicker and we lost 3 of our young guys within the first 2 rotations of racking hose... I was able to plug away and was tired when I got done, but not blown up... then my stair running workout yesterday was really great, did some extra flights and feeling good today... So excited to get the Magic back from eating well !!!! Thanks for the link, I have tried the parallel one before and liked it alot!!! Those Bottom up squats sound killer!!!! Good for you!

@ThyPeace google Lacing patterns for running shoes, should give you some examples. I high a High Arch and High instep, so I have to be careful how much I tighten my shoes over my instep, or numb paws for sure!!!! I have done some alternate lacing and have found in helps!!!

Happy to report that Sleep was good last night, so I woke up this morning feeling better about this round. I really just keep hoping that everything will happen fast, somehow 12 days into this I will be back in time to like 4 months ago... but I know that it takes time.... both with my food and with my exercise.... @Lucky0507 I have always found during all my whole 30s that eating out is never as satisfying as what I am able to have at home... Have a great day everyone!

@ThyPeace this thread is exactly what I needed. I started another whole 30 on jan 9th (my 4th or 5th one... Not really sure) but I feel off the wagon big time in the past two months with my eating and exercise... and I SUFFERED through the worst run I have had in recent memory.... STRUGGLE BUS the whole way... I am on day 11, hoping my body turns the corner soon, so I can get back on the training....reading through your posts has helped me out alot.... I keep hoping that the extra 15-20 pounds I gained since my last race in Oct 2016 will melt away in these 11 days, but no such luck....

Checking in today... not too bad here, sounds like everyone is hanging in there... these are the tough days, where it doesnt seem like this is doing anything for you....but it gets better, at least I keep telling myself that... boy going off the rails 2 months ago has really made this whole 30 similar to my first one. I am hoping I get the NSV i had then... ie faster running, and better sleep. Broke up a spinach meat muffin in a pan with some carrots, celery, onions this morning and added a egg for a scramble... was so good. Had tuna salad for lunch with a while sliced cucumber.... dipped in lizard sauce... so good. Keep up the good work everyone, we got this!!!

been a bit out of touch for a few days, busy and work and at home. Sunday was a tough day for me. I went for an 8 mile run with my friend (she is running a half marathon in march) I ate a PWO snack and went for it... but man my legs felt like LEAD 2.5 miles into it. I just couldnt get my body to push anymore. To top it off we were near her fire station when they got a call, so we ducked in and went on 2! calls with full gear, SCBA, and carrying equipment... after 5.5 miles into our run. WE then had another 2.5 to top it off... and I WAS DEAD.. on one of the fire scence I ALMOST drank a powerade, because I felt so depeleted, but I threw down some water and pushed through. All in all, it was one of the WORST runs I have every had.... Even with out the extra fire stuff. I cannot wait for my body to get adjusted (again) to fat burning... this stage was hard my first time around, I just couldnt get myself moving... but once I hit like Day 15-16 I felt amazing... cant wait for that!!! Having some Chicken and steamed veggies for lunch, I coated the chicken with some ginger, garlic, salt, black pepper and seared it both sides then finished in oven... so yummy... also have a side of Lizard sauce (Well Fed Website).. Yummmmm My run with my friend was way better this morning with 2 minutes per mile faster than sunday... although I was dragging a bit, i pused through 3.5 miles...

Day 3 here and last night was a challenge. I had a nice chicken breast, veggies, and some red skinned potatoes ready to be eaten, but then I got a fire call, so my dinner ended up being devoured by the kids and my husband. I grabbed 2 hard boiled eggs on my way out the door, but didn't get a chance to eat them until 2 hours later and by the time i got home, I was tired. So this morning I had a nice big breakfast veggie scramble. my husband is making me some meat and spinach muffins from WellFed today (my favorite on the go food!!!) so I will have something good waiting for me at home and something to take when I chaperone my Step Daughter's field trip tomorrow. I also made some Lizard sauce over the weekend and am almost out of it!!! I legit use it on EVERYTHING!!!! so yummy.... For everyone who is a first timer I cannot recommend an immersion blender enough... it is a solid investment and I use mine all the time to whip up homemade mayo in seconds and the lizard sauce quickly.... a time saver for sure!!!!

Jumping in here, this will be my 4th whole 30.... I had been very successful maintaining a good balance for 2 years... then things got food crazy. I stopped being so careful and was very lax about working out. The combination has not worked out well at all. Right now I am trying to get my food and workout habits back in order and am conecntrated on reducing some stress in my life as well. I am a 38 year old female , married with 3 stepkids. I have had lots of stress over the past 6 months and I need to get my groove back. I actually started on the Whole 30 path last week, but knew I was attending a banquet over the weekend, so my true start date is today. Here's to 30 days of no excuses and good food!
