    Starting August 1!

I thought I'd stop by and post, since I haven't in quite some time. I finished the 30 days without incident, though I was sorely tempted by a glass of wine and a gin and tonic on more than one occasion. I lost 11 lbs total and felt tons better. Less inflammation in my ankle and shoulder, better sleep, and my skin and hair look amazing! I'm really looking forward to adding grassfed dairy back into my diet, then I plan to live the 80/20 Paleo lifestyle. I never started crossfit (I was just too intimidated, even after I visited and spoke with them) but I did start a walking program. I never measured myself, but my clothes are looser and I can wear a pair of jeans I haven't been able to wear for about a year. After reading about the kettlebell workout here, I might pick up a couple of those and give that a go! This month is my birthday month, so I'm sure there will be a bit of off roading, but I know I can just look at it is worthwhile (or not) and move on from it, instead of letting it spiral into a guilt/shame binge that completely derails me for months. Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread. I've really enjoyed reading the ups and downs (and living them) along with you.

Still here and still going strong on day 17. I've had issues with not being hungry at all the past few days, including today. So I'm forcing myself to eat at least two meals per day. It's my lady time, so that might have something to do with it. Speaking of lady time, I generally have horrible cramping the day before, but it didn't happen this time. I don't know if that's an added benefit of eating better foods, but it was certainly a welcome change. I'm also not as bloated as usual. In fact, I put on a pair of jeans yesterday that I haven't worn in almost a year. I was able to get them up and buttoned, but not comfortably yet. Hopefully, by the end of this Whole30, I will be able to wear them again. Very curious about the number I might see on the scale at the end.

    Starting August 1!

Today is grocery shopping and cookup day. I'll be working 12 hr shifts M-Tu-W. Add in my commute and I'm out the door at 0545 and don't return until close to 2030, so prep is key for me to make it through this stretch and stay compliant. I swear, I need a refrigerated suitcase to haul all my food to work every day! Last week, I tried to lighten the load by eating breakfast before leaving home, but I'm not sure I can do that each morning. Wonder of wonders! I've discovered I can actually drink black coffee and enjoy it. I've always been a heavy cream user (My friend jokes that I like a cup of warm cream with the word "coffee" whispered over it) but I've been able to drink a few cups of black coffee here and there. I brought a small container of coconut milk to work and added it to a cup, and it was wonderful! But it's good to know I can stomach drinking it black if I absolutely need a coffee pick-me-up. Last night I cobbled together a meal out of leftovers; satay chicken thighs over a bed of the bitterest frisee I've ever eaten. I added my last hard boiled duck egg and one lonely heirloom tomato from my own plant, then applied a liberal drizzle of Well Fed's Moroccan dipping sauce (that stuff is amazing!). Thank goodness for the sauce...I couldn't eat that bitter frisee without it. This morning I actually had to cook something, so I pan sauteed some fire-roasted onions and peppers with broccoli and coins of compliant chicken sausage. A little drizzle of ghee, and it was most satisfying.

    Mayo FAILED!

My immersion blender mayo was perfect when I made it, but separated in the fridge. I blitzed an avocado and some spices into it, which thickened it a bit. I used it to make a chicken salad yesterday and it was delicious, but not as thick as I'd like. I'm trying again tonight or tomorrow. Wish me luck...

Last night was a huge challenge for me! I met some friends at my favorite restaurant/bar and the temptations were overwhelming. Luckily, this is a farm to table restaurant, so there were several compliant dishes to choose from. I went with a charcuterie board (had to skip the house-made bourbon mustard and some of the pickled veggies (sugar in the pickling liquid) and I ordered my grassfed burger sans bun and bleu cheese (but added a bed of micro greens and a fried egg on top!). To satisfy my cocktail cravings, the mixologist made me a mocktail with seltzer, lime juice, and bitters. I had organic, french press coffee for dessert and left happy! We're 1/3 of the way through our Whole30, everyone!

I guess I did something similar tonight. For me it was a cup of frozen mango chunks mixed with slivered almonds, with coconut milk poured over top. It froze and coated the frozen mango and made a lovely, cool dessert treat. I ate my chicken livers tonight and have some left for breakfast tomorrow. I also made some chicken salad with slivered almonds and homemade mayo. I have some roasted beets and a side salad to accompany. I'll also pack some cornichons and pistachios in case I need a bit more to eat. I also packed a small container of coconut milk to pour into a cup of coffee at work tomorrow. I've found I can go without sugar, but not something rich and creamy!

One week down already! Hard to believe. I woke up this morning with zero appetite. Usually, I wake up a bit hungry, but not today, even after sleeping 3 hours later than my usual wake-up time. I finally just made some food and forced myself to eat it...sauteed peppers and onions, added some garlic spinach to the mix, then fried three eggs in coconut oil to top my veggies/greens mix. Seasoned the finished dish with a bit of ghee, s&p, and smoked paprika. It didn't last long, and now I'm stuffed. Oh, checked out the Crossfit box late last week and met a few other women there. I'm still realllllly intimidated, but the trainers encouraged me to come and try out a free class and I was assured by everyone that the workouts are scalable. I'm still pondering, but might check it out next week during my 3 days off stretch. I have pastured chicken livers I'll cook for my super late lunch in a few hours. Really looking foward to those! Congrats to everyone on making it thus far. And if you haven't, then jump back on board with us and extend your finish date.

Miriam, I was looking at Kombucha at Whole Foods last night, and I keep reading about it on multiple sites. I know it is a fizzy, fermented drink (with trace amounts of alcohol, according to the bottle of the brand I read last night) similar to tea. That was kind of disappointing to me, as I'm not a big fan of cold teas, only the warm kind in a cup. But it seems there are tons of flavors and it's supposed to be extremely good for you, so I'm tempted to get some and check it out. Also, lots of people seem to make their own.

Hahaha! I think you're on your own with your pans! I am enjoying my cleaner kitchen for a short time before my cookup tonight, and the mountain of dishes it will create. I'm still trying to work up the nerve to check out the Crossfit place. I know there are several around here, so if this one seems sketchy or not welcoming to me (a fatty for sure!) then I will find another one to check out. This one is just super convenient to my house, so I'm hoping it will turn out to be a good one. Although, maybe it would be best for me to continue walks, bike rides, and simple weights during my Whole30. It would certainly simplify my eating and schedule a bit.

Denise, do you take any supplements? I've been using Naturally Calm magnesium supplements for over a year, so I think that helps me a lot. I take it right before brushing my teeth for bed and I get the benefit of Mg supplementation and more restful sleep. I've also heard that having a fatty snack about an hour before bed (avocado or a nut butter) helps, but I know snacking is verboten during Whole30.

Wow, I slept like the dead last night and woke up fully refreshed instead of tired. And I didn't wake up all night, while I usually get up once or twice to pee. My chronically-achy left shoulder is not the least bit bothersome and my right ankle (old soccer injury) is slightly swollen, but not the little balloon-off-the-side-of-my-foot it usually appears to be. Last night I cleaned all the pans from previous cooking and ran the dishwasher while I put more short ribs in the slow cooker (http://guiltykitchen.com/2013/03/13/paleo-slow-cooker-short-ribs/) and made stuffed peppers (http://wellnessmama.com/1618/stuffed-peppers-with-guacamole-and-salad-kid-approved/). I had a stuffed pepper with broccoli and a handful of grapes for my dinner. Maybe I didn't cook the peppers long enough, but the filling was delicious. I saved my pepper shell to dice up and throw into an omelet another day. I had short ribs with garlic sauteed spinach and an avocado for breakfast this morning, and they are really good. I used the balsamic and dijon mustard version of the recipe to stay compliant. Today/tonight will be my major cookup for the week ahead. I'm planning to make the Well Fed citrus carnitas and chocolate chili; probably some type of Mediterranean spiced beef sliders; chicken salad and egg salad to eat with lettuce; salmon patties; baba ghanoush, and some of Well Fed's Moroccan dipping sauce. Oh, I'm also making mayo for the first time tonight. I'm using this site's recipe http://thehealthyfoodie.com/2013/07/07/fail-proof-home-made-paleo-mayo-whole30-compliant/ because it uses an immersion blender (which I have, yay!). There's even a cool video, so maybe I won't mess it up. In just a bit, I'm finally checking out a Crossfit box that's recently opened less than 5 miles from home. I'm a bit intimidated by the thought of Crossfit, but I know it would be a great workout. Who here is a crossfitter? Is it truly scale-able for everyone? I'm pretty heavy and I doubt I could run even a quarter mile right now...Any advice would be appreciated.

What did you think about the carnitas? I absolutely love them! In fact, my grocery list for today involves lots of lemons and limes for exactly that reason. Seriously, one of my favorite recipes ever. I make them this way all the time now, and my non-paleo/Whole30 friends all love them, too.

    Starting August 1!

I've been cruising along without too much difficulty so far. I've felt a bit tired, but no other problems. To be fair, I started practicing the template about a week ago, just not wholly compliant. And I made the switch to mostly grassfed meats last year. Yesterday was my godson's 4th birthday party, and there were temptations all around. I ate a good breakfast full of healthy fat and packed some compliant chicken sausage to throw on the grill with everyone's hot dogs, etc. There wasn't much in the way of compliant sides (chips, crackers, and cheese ball, anyone?) so I nibbled on watermelon and blueberries and drank a ton of water. Came home to grassfed shortribs from the slow cooker (prepped after breakfast) with a big salad and some sauteed zukes. Added half an avo and some lemon juice and olive oil to my salad for a little extra fat. I was stuffed! So far, today was slow cooker chicken (I put a whole chicken in there), snap peas with a bit of ghee, and a few grapes and pistachios. I'm drinking tons of water and also added a little coconut water today. Lunch will be in the next 30-45 minutes, and I'm planning to eat more of the leftover short ribs with cabbage and carrots (sauteed in ghee). After lunch, I'm hitting the stores to restock for the week. I'll do a bit of a cookup tonight to prep for the week ahead, as well. I'm working Tu-W-F this week, so I want to make sure I have plenty of meals prepped for those long, 12-hr shifts!

I'm starting on August 1st, as well. This will be my second Whole30, though I did it without this forum the first time. I'm looking forward to the support and encouragement of a group this time! I feel so much better when I eat clean and exercise, but my high stress job and husband's layoff last year seriously derailed me. It's time to get back on track for good and another Whole30 is just the springboard to do it.
