    If your meals are keeping you satisfied 4-5 hours at a time, you're good.
    Often, we see people who come from a background of calorie restriction who continue to limit their meal sizes the way they would if they were counting calories, sometimes purposefully, sometimes subconsciously. Mostly, this was a post to encourage those people to eat as much as they need to eat, even if it seems like a lot of food, and to say that it is okay to eat more than what they may be used to, if that's what it takes to stay satisfied and avoid snacking between meals.

    I'm not sure if this is breakfast, or more of a brunch, since I slept later than usual, but this is what I had for my first meal today:
     

     
    Elvis burger (hamburger patty topped with almond butter, banana, and bacon), collard greens, and sweet potatoes (yes, they were slightly burnt. One of these days I'll learn to set a timer).

    Just keep replying at the bottom to add to your log. To reply to someone else's post in your log, click Quote on their post to quote it, like I did here, or tag the by typing the @ symbol and start typing their name (no spaces) and a list will come up, keep typing until their name shows in the list and then click on it, like @KiwiKendra.
    When you are looking at the list of posts in a section, if you click on the dot or star next to the post, it'll take you to the first unread post in that discussion.

    Remember that all your meals don't have to be fancy. Some really simple meals that I do that don't take a lot of prep:  scrambled eggs with spinach/other vegetables; a can of tuna or salmon mixed with mayo or avocado or even just olive oil, on top of salad; hamburger patty (I buy frozen, pre-formed ones and cook them straight from the freezer, but you could buy ground meat of whatever type you prefer and freeze it in patties) with mayo and mustard or avocado, tomato, onion, and pickles, with a side of roasted potato or sweet potato.  Or I grill a bunch of chicken at the start of the week, then I can use it in salads or stir fries for several meals. You don't have to have a brand new recipe at every meal. Just make sure you have food that is easy to prepare quickly on days when you don't have time to do anything elaborate.

    Personally, if you think they'd read It Starts With Food, I'd get them that one, for the explanations. It didn't feel at all new-age or weird, to me, it just made sense as I read it. The Whole30 is good for a step by step how to do a Whole30, it has some very basic explanations of why, but not as in depth as ISWF. If you think they're pretty on board with trying it, but want the guidance of what exactly they'll need to do, that's probably a good one.

    Have you tried the cacao based beverages like choffy or crio bru? I don't have them real often, but they're a nice change. Don't expect it to taste like hot chocolate, it's not sweetened, it's just brewed cocoa beans, but it's not bad. 
    There was a discussion here on the forum recently about the mushroom based drinks, I don't remember if anyone ever went back and posted an actual review of them or if it was just people asking if anyone had tried them.
    You might also consider quitting all caffeine at some point and seeing how that affects things. It can be pretty miserable at first, but after a couple of weeks you may be surprised to find that you don't need the morning jolt of coffee anymore.

    Sometimes you do have to take medicine. Extending your Whole30 is an excellent way to deal with this, and I hope you're feeling better.
    You're looking for sugar in the actual ingredient list. Any plant-based foods have naturally occurring sugar, so coconut milk (and tomato paste, and even raw nuts) will have some grams of sugar. That's not important. What's important is the ingredient list. If the ingredient list contains any sugar, honey, stevia, or any other sweetener (or any other off-plan ingredient like sulfites or carrageenan), it is not allowed. It is possible for food manufacturers to make a food that lists sugar in the ingredients but has 0 grams in the nutrition info -- they can make the servings small enough to get the number down to 0 -- but because there is sugar in the ingredients list, it would still not be okay for Whole30.

    I think you did the right thing, as far as not wanting to hurt her feelings, although if this becomes a regular thing, you'll probably have to talk to her about it. 
    If they were something you had an interest in trying after your whole30, you could've frozen them for later, but if you weren't likely to eat them then either, that would be a waste of freezer space and you'd probably end up throwing them out anyway.

    There's nothing about eating lots of veggies, protein, and healthy fat that would be unsafe, but what we do see a lot is people not eating enough -- maybe not enough fat or not enough starchy vegetables or just flat out not enough in general. Or we see people not salting their food, so they end up with their electrolytes out of balance,  which can result in tiredness and dizziness. If you do decide to try Whole30 again, I'd  recommend following not just the rules, but the recommendations as well, and hanging out here on the forum to get feedback on your meals early in your 30 days, before you start having major issues.

    @Fernsk there's no hard and fast rule, so just whatever makes sense to you, I guess. Think about how you'd use these things in a typical meal -- if you're having bread, and you'd mostly just want a piece or two at the end of the meal to sop up the last bit of sauces on a plate, you might just have slightly less of everything  so you wouldn't be too stuffed to have the bread. If you serve something over rice, even though rice is not a vegetable, for the average person, it's kind of taking the place of vegetables, so instead of having your food over cauli rice or over a potato, you have it over rice. Just try to eat these things the way you normally would want to have them and do the best you can to build your meal around that.

    If you continue eating Whole30 style, making your meals match the meal template, you will continue to improve your health, and you will almost certainly also lose weight as you get healthier, although it may not be as fast as you would like. However, losing weight slowly while eating in a way that is sustainable means you won't yo-yo, losing and gaining and losing over and over again.
    Losing a pound a week is not bad. Keep doing that and in a year, you'll have lost 50 lbs. Focus on the other improvements you've seen. List them somewhere -- actually write them down -- and when you feel discouraged, refer back to your list. Add to the list over time, if you experience new improvements. If you have trouble getting started, here's a handy checklist you can print off and mark the ones you've experienced.
    Remember that the more time you've spent dieting, gaining and losing weight, restricting your calories, the longer it is going to take to really heal from that. I know that it's frustrating, and I know that you want to lose weight as quickly as possible, but think about your experiences with other diets. You've lost weight on them, sure, but it sounds like you weren't able to maintain that weight loss -- therefore they didn't really work. A successful diet not only helps you lose the weight initially, it helps you maintain a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. Try something new. Ditch the scale, focus on non-scale victories and on eating healthy foods that will nourish your body and make you healthier.

    This kind of depends on you and your comfort level. I bought a kit (from Kombucha Kamp) because 1) I was a little intimidated by the process and didn't want to screw up, and 2) I didn't want to wait any longer than I had to (growing your own scoby takes at least a couple of weeks, plus then waiting for the first batch to be done on top of that. With a kit, you just have the waiting for the first batch to be done). So are you more the type who is willing to wait longer to do it all yourself, or are you more the type to want things to be done as fast as possible? Lots of people have had good luck doing their own from scratch, and now that I know more about it, if I needed to restart, if I lost my scoby or something, I'd be okay with starting from scratch without the kit.
