Yes I think that is the problem - don't reward yourself with food! This feeds the habit that we need to get rid of on Whole30 I was doing the same thing with Medjool Dates after a meal. I would only have 2 (the recommended serving), but I felt like it was not a good habit to continue since I couldn't wait to get my hands on them after I ate!

This recipe is AWESOME... very much compliant and it tastes so good. I cook some up every week! I normally make it with ground beef because it's more readily available to me than pork, but the pork tastes very good as well. Make sure not to skip any of the ingredients and make sure to measure everything out! For spicy, I would add crushed red pepper flakes. Enjoy! (Also, I haven't formed them into balls or patties as the recipe suggests - I normally just toss the ingredients in while or immediately after browning the meat in a skillet)

I don't think it is ever completely ruined. You are seeing the results of your hard work in how bad you feel. I know that it takes a lot less off plan food now for me to realize how bad I feel than it did before I changed my eating habits. All choices provide us with something to learn and while 5 slices of cake will not make you healthier it is driving home the realization of what will. Get back on the train one choice at a time.

If you think you might have trouble with gluten and dairy - allow yourself enough recovery time in between reintros, listen to your body:

    - try and reintro dairy in parts (eg. butter vs cream vs yoghurt vs milk vs hard cheese), rather than mixing them up, you may have stronger reactions to some kinds of dairy and you won't know if you mix them together during the reintro.

    - you may want to reintro gluten last. I reintroed gluten first (I was so sure I'd have no reaction) and it takes me well over a week to recover from one dose of gluten, sometimes several weeks and it makes my insides much weaker than usual (making further reintros hard to determine reactions).

Be aware lots of soy sauce contains gluten, this was a big surprise to me.

PS. I totally agree on the reintro without eating out, it's almost harder than Whole30 eating out, as most reintro items contain several others too

Aw haha, well thanks for the thought I know I really need to sit down and plan it out - this is not something to fly by the seat of your pants with. I thought about not reintro-ing soy back at all, but there are SO many things that have soy lecithin in them, it's not even funny. I definitely drank as well, I'm thinking I might have an issue with gluten... because after drinking beer I felt SO bloated. I guess we will see. I seem to be fine with wine though Anyway, good to hear from you!

bibliophile - I ate very primal for the year before I did my whole30. But when I eat primal or whatever, because I am no longer beholden to the strict rules, I never know what is the appropriate diet. I cannot gauge what "moderate" is. How do you follow the 80-20 rule? How many servings of dairy is too much? How many times a week can I eat chocolate? How often can I order Thai takeout? Looking at my diet the past week, I definitely have eaten mostly paleo and several meals that are whole30 compliant - but I feel discouraged and lost without strict guidelines.

On top of that, I still treat food (and to an extent, alcohol) as a reward. I am still equating food with my performance. The Whole30 is supposed to help you think of food as nourishment, not as punishment or reward. Maybe it will just take longer for my brain to realize that. As someone who used to be overweight and an emotional eater, its not surprising this is proving so difficult now.

Re: drinking, its a separate issue I think. I have tried having a very specific plan for handling drinking during social situations. And then - in the heat of the moment - I usually reach this "Oh screw it, I'm young, I had a hard week, everyone else is doing it, how bad can it be?!" moment. Its like my brain has a revisionist history - it erases all of the bad feelings. Its happened time and time again, despite my many plans and commitments to myself. Its also a social crutch - I find it very difficult, even impossible, to feel comfortable meeting people and socializing without that so-called "liquid courage". That is a personal issue I need to deal with.

Nowadays it seems to me that there are so many people "in Recovery" or taking meds that preclude drinking alcohol, that it's not all that unusual  for someone to just say, "No thanks, I don't drink." If you are cheerful and convivial about it, people will still be glad to have you at the party. I usually have club soda with a twist of lime, so I can feel like I'm participating, but I don't have to deal with the results of really drinking.

Treasure!  I was just thinking about you and wondering how you are doing.

I agree with everything Bethany said.

As far as reintros go, reintro only what you're either curious about or know you'd like to eat again at some point in the future.  Have the food group in question at all 3 meals for one day, then go back to Whole30 eating for 2 days, then move onto the next food group.  Don't eat the reintroed group again until all your reintros are done.

I reintroed dairy, non-gluten grains and legumes.  I was off gluten almost 7 years before my Whole30, so no need to reintro that. I also didn't reintro soy. I simply didn't want soy in my body anymore (I believe it messed with my hormones). In between my Whole30 ending and official reintro starting, I went away for a girls weekend and had alcohol (some wine and mixed drinks), so I suppose you could say I did an alcohol reintro too.

I planned mine out pretty methodically. If you follow the link to my post W30 log the first few pages talk about my reintro process and plans. My biggest suggestions are to introduce the things you think you might eat again and do it carefully.

Back away from the off plan foods and take some deep breathes. Think about what you accomplished on your W30. Think about how good you felt when you were done. Now sit down and make a meal plan for the next week that is 100% compliant and stick to it. Then make a meal plan to take you all the way through reintroductions carefully. It is really hard to do reintros while eating out for sure. On the dairy you may be correct. If dairy is something you really want to test well and be sure of I recommend trying very high quality raw full fat dairy on your reintro day. I have problems with low quality or low fat dairy that I don't have with high quality raw.

You can do this! You have not failed until you fail to try!

I agree with amberino! Get rid of the temptations. Take the time to really give yourself a proper prep day before W30 and go through your pantry/fridge checking the ingredient labels to see what things are compliant and what aren't. I had to put SO many items in another storage area that I don't go into regularly, so they are out of sight and out of the kitchen. Make sure you have food prepped and ready to go so you don't have to think about what you can eat. If there are non-compliant, easier things to reach for, you will. And the fat is super important. I definitely notice a difference when I forget to eat my healthy fats! I get hungry really soon after eating a full meal. Again, make sure you're drinking enough water.

So I'm obviously several days behind on my food log here, but I try to take pictures of all of my meals and post them on Instagram. Yesterday was my last day. Whole 40 (a.k.a. 30) and I weighed myself this morning. It is TOM, so it might even be a bit lower, but I'm ecstatic about it. 138.2... My starting weight was 146.3.... 8 LBS!!!!!! I was stuck around 145 for several months and would just go up and down a few lbs, depending on how good/bad I was. I told myself this whole time on W30 that if I made it to 140 I would be super happy. So I am thrilled. I am going to keep eating W30 style and wait at least another week to do my reintros. My CPT workshop is this weekend and I am UBER nervous.... I'm not ready at all. AHHHH! FREAK OUT! But anyway, needless to say, I cannot be sick or not feeling in tip top shape for this weekend, so I'm waiting. Hopefully my trainer will take my measurements later, and hopefully I lost some inches. Will keep you posted.

Last time, I 'fudged' the rules, because I trusted my husband to have read the book - he was supposed to be leading us in whole30 while I was trying to get a 45 day yeast cleanse program down! HA! I knew something was wrong when he didn't know what ghee was! ;-)
Anyway - this time, 'I' read the book - and the FREEDOM!!!
I know many folks are torn up about the 'rules' - but for me, with health issues, all related to inflammation, this book, this woe, is FREEDOM!
And, after reading the book FOR MYSELF, I realize several of the food issues that I have had...ways that I have cheated(I was the queen of weight watchers cheating back in the day!), and that it is NOW time to get serious!
I realize that I have been feeding myself poison...even in moderation! I HAVE BEEN POISONING MYSELF! I think it is a pretty sound rule "DO NOT TAKE POISON" Some poisons kill quickly, and some, a long drawn out way. I want to stop this crazy way, and the RULES are not shackles for me, but are like road signs for me to go the right direction!
I'm 52 - over half way to 100. If I live to 100, I want to be healthy, fit, and sound of mind!
Making these choices now will impact my then...and I hope that it is not too late!
Thank you, Robin, for speaking out on the 'rules'!

Are you still having sore eyes? I used to have them too, and made a few tweaks: more carbs (about 50g of sweet potato is enough - which isn't much) if my eyes feel sore, magnesium, Omega 3 and Vitamin D3. I suspect the carbs make the biggest difference, but the others helped too.

I used to believe in the naturally fat/skinny thing, but now I wonder just what we can achieve by tweaking our food. I've had more positive health changes in the last 12 months (post Whole30) than I've had in my entire life prior to Whole30 (NOT fiddling with my food except "eat less, exercise more" which just made me morbidly obese and sick).

My husband and I went to the movies a week ago, I'm on W30, he's not, and I did smuggle in a sparkling water but no snacks... I did have a slight "craving" I guess, just because it used to be such a regular to thing to go ahead and get candy/popcorn/drink at the movies; but I just brushed it away and told myself I didn't need it and was fine Have fun on your date night.
