Question for CrazyCow (turn down the holiday music) -  There are those moments in Whole30 where we need a bit of distraction to prevent us from putting pie in the pie hole.  You have been down this road three times.  Any guidance for us as we enter the abyss?

Hi Brenda2014, well, I don't know that I'm in any position to give guidance, but here's a few things that I know i picked up over the course of the last 3 W30s:

I really like Dallas and Melissa's inner check: would I like steamed fish and broccoli as much as I want this nice cherry pie that someone brought over for me, just to be lovely and nice? Usually, the answer was no, not really. Deconstruct the why of what you want. I hated sounding in my head like a petulant two year old ("because I waaaaant it!"), so that enabled me to walk away. I hate losing, and I was really competing with my own inner voice.

If you watch any television, a show I found I really enjoyed as a distraction was Drive-Ins, Diners, and Dives--bizarre, I know, but I was really fascinated by how much so close to Whole30 many foods featured actually were. It gave me ideas for the weekly cook up, as well--which was also a distraction of sorts, too.

I also made plans to do things I had not done in a long while. Often there were drinks served (think Jazz Clubs and College Football Championships), but I came to live with a fizzy water and lime in hand. Which I really like...so that was great, too...But the habit of being at a sporting event and having a pint and all sorts of snacking food...it's a hard pill to swallow. In fact, there was one very realistic dream I had over the W30 where I woke up convinced I had failed because I'd had a bunch of pints of horrible beer (as in not even beer I liked!) and nachos of all things! It was a relief to find that it had not, in fact, happened, but beware...those dreams you have a SO FREAKING REAL!

Get proper sleep, too. That's a big thing. Not a distraction, per se, but you will find you are better at dealing with all that goes on in the day much better. Same for exercise...make sure to get moving. My best 40 mile walk came on the heels of my second W30. I was better during the event itself, and I was faster in my recovery, too. Fitness, rest and food are all linked and your body will thrive as long as you keep that in mind.

    Hi everyone,

So I went back and forth today as to starting on the 1st or the 6th, and I've opted for the 1st, but this thread seems like such a fun group, I'm going to hop on!

This will be my FOURTH Whole 30--the first one was Jan 1 2013, then mid Feb, then in the early summer of last year. Whilst I've stayed true in the main over the past several months (well, ish), I'm fully aware that I'm now waaaay off the reservation (cue holiday music and winter laziness--for shame!). Time to get back in gear. I look forward to keeping up with everyone here!
