EAH got a reaction from bigmamabird in Start Date August 1, 2016
I have done two successful W30s and two unsuccessful whole 30s. I am joining this group because I want August to be a rewarding month that puts me back into some good habits. Watchimg my intake of fruit and cutting out snacking are my keys.
    Best of luck.

I'm in. I decided last night to join. I'm still on vacation and have a girls birthday get-away trip in a week so this might be a little nuts.
I've done a couple Whole30s but I ducked-out of my last one. I am a runner in South Florida with a 5 lb problem. I need to manage the sugar dragon so that my running time is faster and my running shorts are looser.
Good luck to all today. Since I'm not home, I'm not weighing myself but this may work to my benefit!
My kids and husband are NOT joining but since they eat what I prepare, I hope this month puts them on a healthier track for 2016. No pasta dishes or rice dishes for dinner will be a good change.
    Good luck all today!

I started the whole30 today!!! This is my first time doing the whole30. I've done 3 21 DSD in the past and while they werent easy, they werent exactly hard. I wanted to do something more challenging for me as well learn what is making my stomach bloat. I've gone off track with my eating and it got out of hand. I cannot wait to feel the benefits of the whole 30 once this withdrawal stage is gone (already feeling the fuzzy head) Good luck everyone

It's Day 7 for me and my rings and watch are leaving indentations on my skin. My pants even feel tight around my ankles - and I am pretty sure I didn't gain weight there. Oh, I hope I don't regret this month. I've seen the timeline but that doesn't assuage my fears. I had a bunless burger with green peppers, onions, tabasco and yellow mustard an hour ago. I feel as if I just finished T'giving meal though. I really don't remember this happening last time I did a Whole30.
On my run today, it felt like the sidewalk was tilting.
I'm hanging with you all but, man, I'm feeling skittish.

    Hey All,

I'm sad to hear about all of this bloating and water retention.  Oh, so not good.  I'm not feeling much change in my body composition but I'm luckily not swollen either.  I tend to stick to a larger breakfast...potatoes, eggs, squash, greens...but no meats that early in the day.  I feel better to eat a mostly salad lunch too...tuna, large salad, avocado.  Then at dinner I will chicken or ground beef. but seafood many nights too!  I'm not sure if that might help...

Day 7 is done at our house. Whew!  The Labor Day weekend was non-eventful and we got through it.

The hardest time I've had in the last three days is around 3pm.  I take a short nap and then wake up so off-kilter.  Pre-Whole30 that would be time for either chocolate or a treat or a lot of nut butter with an apple.  I'm sticking to kombucha these days at that time of day and I've learned that within 15 minutes I'm fine without the sugar.  This is the biggest habit I want to break, so I'm determined to work on this time of day.

Okay.  My Fitbit says not enough steps today.  Going for an after dinner walk and then my husband and I are going to the movies!  Celebrating one week down!

    peace.

EAH - I am feeling your pain!  I am bloated and my poor wedding rings still won't fit.  This is day 11 for me.  I'm hoping it'll go away soon and then I will feel so much better.  For me, I stay motivated when I see results - even small ones.... but seeing my body go seemingly in the opposite direction has been a downer.

This morning I read the end of forum threads like this one to read people's final results.  Almost all discuss a weight loss and better overall health.  I'm going to focus on that.  No one is posting saying, "I gained 25 pounds and feel awful!!!!!!!!!!!".  I'm going to go with that.

    Day 7 here!

It's all going pretty well. Being part of a weekly veggie CSA and a monthly meat CSA makes it easier for sure. I've also developed some really simple meal templates that let me get dinner on the table in about 30 minutes. Plus I'm one of those people that doesn't mind eating the same thing for 5 days straight. Since it's just me, this is a good thing.

Had a family BBQ on Saturday that I successfully navigated with very few comments from family members. I'm also training for a powerlifting competition so I think they attribute a bunch of my "weird" eating habits to that, which is a-okay with me. That ice cream looked delicious though.

Entirely unrelated, yesterday when I was walking back from the grocery store I saw a man trip/ fall forwards off the curb, not be able to get his hands down to break his fall, and smack his head on the ground. I was only about 10 feet away when this happened so I stopped to help to him/ call 911. Since it was his head it was bleeding a lot but otherwise he seemed all right (minus the fact that he didn't have the motor control to break his fall with his hands). So I took off my shirt to press to his head, and then sat in the road and talked to him, by talked I mean I asked him like 50 questions, while we were waiting for the paramedics to arrive. He was a very nice man and was really nonchalant about the whole thing. Anyway, the paramedics and fire department arrive, I tell them what happened, they thank me and I go on my way. Shirtless. The EMTs and firefighters were all very, very nice and very patient with that man.

And that's all. I've never had to call 911 before or help a stranger in quite that manner. And honestly, I mostly felt helpless. Like.. isn't there someone here who knows what to do in this situation? Because I certainly do not.

That was the craziness from my weekend. For those in the US enjoy the day off (if you have it off)!

Navigating a tricky weekend here! Feeling great but will tweak a couple things in the coming second week:
    - eating within an hour of waking
    - snacking when not hungry
On another note, I told my kids to hide the scale and I feel so FREE!
Lastly, I'm thinking on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the two holiest days in my religion. They fall in the middle of this month and one day is a day of fasting. Of course, my commitment to my religion trumps the Whole30 so I need to think about how I am going to face the traditions like Challah (a sweet bread that my aunt makes) and red wine which is ceremonial.

    Hey All!

So great to read your words and imagine where you are and what your days look like compared to mine.  Even though we're sharing this journey we must all come from different backgrounds, different experiences...  And here we've collided.  Kinda cool to think about.  And we are feeling so many of the same things.  The human experience.  I love it!

It's the middle of Day 5.  I went to the farmer's market this morning and came home with an absolute haul of fresh produce, meat, chicken, eggs.  I have sauce tomatoes all over my counter!  It's exciting to plan out meals and foods and think about the possibilities.  And at the same time it's a gorgeous Saturday afternoon and I want to be outside in the sun.  So, I think all this cooking will wait...

Part of my breakfast was a baked Japanese sweet potato with coconut butter drizzled on top.  That was sooooo soooo goooooood.

Happy Day to All of You!
    peace.

Day 5: Last night's little tinnitus exacerbation didn't get worse and this morning my tinnitus was lower. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'm over the bad time. Except I'm still very tired and that's getting me down a bit. I read about everybody's amazing cooking and I just don't have the energy or the desire to do it - and normally I like to cook. Throw in that I'm also afraid to make anything very interesting or exotic because I just don't know what triggers the tinnitus exacerbations and some of them have been so bad that I'm feeling very cautious about what I eat. That said, if the exacerbations really are over and especially if my tinnitus continues to get lower, I will slowly begin to experiment with more interesting and varied food.

I'll be eating out tonight for the first time on Whole30 and I think I'll have salmon cooked with olive oil or dry-grilled, steamed vegetables, and a sweet potato and I'll bring my own dressing. Other options would be an omelette if they'll make it with olive oil or a salad with hard-boiled eggs and my own dressing. Luckily, my friend and I both like eating in coffee shops, so I'm thinking, hoping this won't be too hard.

I ate breakfast very late today because I needed to change a part in my computer, and when I opened it, I got obsessed with cleaning out the dust in all the nooks and crannies. Finally I knew I had to eat because I'd started feeling lightheaded, so I stopped and had breakfast and finished my computer project after. I guess there's reason they say you should have breakfast within an hour of waking up. And I had this in mind - until my dust-removal obsession took over.

In the scheme of things, it's better to clean my computer compulsively than to eat compulsively, but it's interesting to acknowledge that if it's not one compulsive activity it's another.

Rough morning, ugh! Stomachache, moodiness, back pain, kinda gassy. Tried a new chicken experiment in the crockpot yesterday, wondering if it might have been the spices? Or maybe I ate too much fat (super megatons of coconut oil in that chicken!)... but I doubt it. I hope it's not the mayo I've now been making with the pasteurized egg whites (due to my raw egg sensitivity issue)... if that is taken away from me I swear I will cry. Really.
Anyway, no matter… I'm holding on strong. I've done this before, and I know weird stuff comes up. I will pass through it. I was just hoping that since I did the Whole30 in June, and have been about 95% compliant since, that I would sail through with no issues! Ha. ; )
One thing that creeped back in over the past few months since my first Whole30 was snacking between meals (compliant snacks only, but...), bits of added sugar in meats/sauces, and sampling of sugary dessert treats here and there (which almost always gives me a bad stomachache). It's been good to get back on the program and notice how active my snack dragon had become! Good wake-up call.
Have a great Day 5 everyone (or whatever day you're on)!

Day 4 is complete - on one hand it seems like it has been a lot longer and yet on the other it does not.  In the beginning had lots of struggles, made my own mayo but forget I have issues with uncooked eggs and paid dearly for that mistake. My husband on the other hand is totally rocking it, no issues at all .... but I have to say I love this forum and all the ideas and inspirations.  Tonight I made chili from the W30 book and someone posted and suggested putting some guac on top - I LOVED IT! I have now decided to make a batch and freeze in 2 portion sizes as the weather is turning to fall.
I started this whole adventure because my Naturopath recommended it - need to lose weight and pre-diabiatic...I have to say, after 4 days and finally feeling a lot better I think I can do it....

Hi everyone! Longtime reader, first time poster...

First of all, thank you, all, in this amazing group for your posts and your support. I've been reading every day, and each day I find other people who are experiencing similar ups and downs as I am. Knowing I am part of a huge group makes is all so much easier!

Allowing myself the freedom to eat healthy fat is mind-bending and a game changer. I have believed most of my life that I should follow a fat-free or low-fat diet. Changing that habit has required a bit of rewiring, but its been worth it. The healthy fats really seem decadent and absolutely delicious. And in only a few days, I'm seeing small changes that really add up:
Hungry feels different -- I'm not shaky anymore. Bloating is gone I'm far less flatulent. So much, that I'm a little embarrassed for my pre-W30 self. I can cook! Not great, but not bad either! High quality ingredients make the meal. I made a W30 impulse purchase of a julienne peeler. I'm in W30 heaven. Julienne everything!  An earlier poster mentioned the end of the same/guilt/remorse cycle. Amen, sister! That statement really resonated with me.

Thank you all, again, for being there. Looking forward to spending Day 5 with you!

Awesome!  My day 4- today-started more refreshed too!  Also, wanted to send encouragement that I did a whole bachelorette weekend with the girls and was totally sober, albeit before I started the whole30, but I did it totally sober and I ended up being the life of the party....to my surprise even.  Stand strong and have the courage to laugh about the situation if need be.  What helped me was that I didn't take myself too seriously in the moment, yet I stood strong and owned my own behaviors.    You can do it, and good luck.

Day 5 for me. Started the long weekend off by getting out of work early-and taking a nap. When I attempted a Whole30 in April I remember my sleep was disturbed for the 1st week or so but by the 3rd week sleeping better than ever. I also had stopped grinding my teeth which I have done for years.

Hi there! Day 4. Thanks for the postings on mayo a couple days ago. Finally made a batch. Why the heck haven't I ever done this before? Wow! Really yummy. Made a little bit into tartar sauce to have with the no fuss salmon patties yesterday. A keeper in the menu planning! Made chicken salad with it today for lunch! The best chix salad I've had in a long time.
Had the weirdest icky-feeling dream about non compliant food. Last night, while sleeping, I had pancakes and fried chicken and ribs with BBQ sauce. And in my dream I kept saying well, I'll just eat this and not stop the program. Won't tell anyone, etc. gosh, I'm really not a sneaky person and hate (can't) lie! Where the heck did that come from? Was happy when I woke up to realize it was all a big nightmare!
Best news is that I think I have my sense of smell returning!! Could smell the lavender soap in my shower this AM. Absolutely melted into my coffee after the first few bites of pork sausage patties and roasted acorn squash. BTW, success with not eating fruit yesterday morning and this morning and went all the way through lunch with no hunger issues! So, yes, fruit was the culprit for being hungry right after breakfast!
Got cold like and allergy symptoms. Sneezing and runny nose. Blech. And a goal for me is a half hour on stationary bike or walk. I'm a sedentary gal. That has got to change.
I work from home (alone, no kiddos around--I'm a proud gramma now) so have great luxury in preparing meals, etc. I've got to hand it to this of you who are brownbaggers (as mentioned in someone else's previous post) and moms and dads with little ones around. You all rock taking on this program. Wow. I'm impressed.
Proud of all of us. Thanks for this group!

So anyone having a strong urge to weigh themselves? I usually weigh myself about once a week, but I'm overly excited to see any scale results. Any ideas on how to look for 'non scale victories'? Thanks.

    1. Thank you to the moderator who wrote that we should embrace FATS. I had hard boiled eggs mashed with avocado and I drizzled it with EVOO for M1. I feel really satiated now. So different than yesterday which didn't include enough fat or protein and lead to marathon snacking. I don't work Thursdays so I was in my house all day yesterday (until I picked-up the kids) and I think that that contributed to the grazing. I read that willpower is aided by distraction. I need an anti-snacking distraction plan for for the days I'm home that's more amusing than housework.
    2. Hubby is smoking two pork shoulders tomorrow for the start of college ball. (ATL-Jen: Go gators!) I bought the second one thinking this will make great leftovers.
    3. Old friends are coming to town and they are big drinkers and party-ers so I imagine this will be a challenge -especially since we are heading to a hot, new restaurant tonight.
