Trina1960 reacted to hollyhiggins in Day 45 and Just Now Feeling Tiger Blood
Just wanted to share my slow-and-steady-wins-the-race success story with everyone — especially those of you who are struggling or might be slow to see results.

Today is Day 45 of my second Whole30. (I did my first one last summer.) It's been the FIRST day I've felt tiger blood. I don't plan to stop today or anytime soon. My body has been through a lot, and it needs the time to heal. Plus, I don't ever want to return to my old lifestyle.

I've been slow to lose weight, and I've been slow to feel better. This has been disheartening, because so many Whole30 success stories are all, "Holy cow, I lost 18 pounds in 30 days and I feel like I want to climb a mountain!" I haven't felt any of that. While I feel so much more at peace with the food I'm putting into my body, I've been craving results — many of which are just now appearing.

I lost six pounds in the first month, and given the amount of weight I need to lose (more than 60 pounds), that's not much at all. My energy has been really low. I haven't been "sleeping the sleep of the righteous." Despite following the plan to a T, I've wondered every day if I'm doing something wrong.

But, in the past couple of days, things have started to pick up. And today, holy crap, I FEEL IT. I wish I would have been nicer and more patient with myself in the last month. I spent a lot of time feeling hopeless. Given my context, I think I just needed more time.

I had a two-and-a-half-year bout with antidepressants, which completely wrecked my metabolism. Last year when I was on antidepressants, I did a Whole30 and lost zero weight. This year, I'm completely off of them, and my body is just now getting into the mode where it wants to burn fat. If you're on antidepressants and struggling to lose, it could be the antidepressants. It was for me. If you're interested in getting off them, work with your doctor to develop a very careful tapering plan. Coming off them was pure torture, but it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Anyway, maybe I will be brave enough to share pictures in a couple of months, but for now, hang in there. For some of us, results are slower to come. That sucks, and it ain't fair, but it's OK.

I've just been reading an aug 1st support group and amazed by all the references to icecream, sun butter, smoothies and lots of I don't care if I'm breaking the rules I'm doing it my way attitudes so I totally get Tom's point ... Sad how group think can mutate....
On the flip side I am still in touch with about 10 people I did a whole100 with last year and our group threads have been very supportive and compliant.... Most of us kept individual logs for peer review and assistance so the group log was more a cheering squad which worked well I think

The truth is that moderators cannot get to every post that is added to the Whole30 forum, so we need participants to share their knowledge and experience and to offer support to each other. I wish group threads were a good solution to making sure everyone got help, but I don't like group threads at all.

What I see as a moderator is that groups of people new to the Whole30 often develop strong personalities that create their own rules and guidelines about what is acceptable during a Whole30.

It is in the group threads that we see people excusing eating off-plan foods as no big deal or a simple accident, and advise the eater to just keep going and to not worry about it. There are a few situations where a moderator may say something similar, but not in response to eating dairy, soy, MSG, carrageenan, etc. And not in response to, "I was bored with my food, so I ate x, y, z."  The Whole30 is not open to personal opinion. It is a strict elimination diet that cannot be modified and remain a Whole30. Group threads too often seem to confuse being supportive of people with telling them that their behavior is always okay.

It is in the group threads where we see meals that fail to meet Whole30 standards celebrated as good ideas and adopted by others. Monkey salad, paleo pancakes, and other such Sex With Your Pants On meals show up in these places. The Whole30 is not the wild, wild west of Paleo where anything you want can be made with "Paleo" ingredients and be acceptable. Yet when moderators try to rein this enthusiasm in in group threads, we are often ignored or told to butt out.

We don't stop people from creating and participating in group threads here, but the "lifeguards" in group threads may not be all that I want for participants.

    DAY 31

    PALEO 30 DAY CHALLENGE
    My Personal Journey
    About Me
I started my 30 day Challenge on the 1st February 2014 and successfully completed the challenge on the 2nd February 2014. It is now day 31 and this is my story.
I am 48 years of age and was suffering from many types of perimenopausal symptoms. I was working in hospitality doing shift work prior to starting the 30 day challenge which only made my symptoms worse through lack of sleep, bad eating habits and zero work life balance.
I decided to give up my hospitality work when my health hit rock bottom in November 2013. I had been put on blood pressure medication for extremely high blood pressure, antidepressants for anxiety and sleeping tablets as I was not able to sleep doing shift work. I also consumed a lot of caffeine to get me moving and to keep myself awake during my late/night early morning shifts so I was on a very vicious cycle.
I saw this challenge on a friend's Facebook page in January this year, did some reading about Paleo and the Whole 30 challenge and thought it may be just what I needed.

Changes I was hoping for at the start of the 30 Challenge
My biggest hope was that I would be able to increase my energy levels, sleep soundly without medication, stabilize my mood and loose excess weight that had crept up on me over the last 3 or so years.

    Whole 30
My first few days were very testing. Headaches, foggy brain and all I wanted to do was curl up in bed. I wondered what I had got myself into.
Every day since those beginning days have been positive. By week two I noticed a great improvement in my energy levels and mood and my sleeping was really coming along well. I had a smile back on my face and life back in my eyes.
The last couple of weeks were amazing. My motivation was exceptional. I was setting goals and archiving them. Planning my days and time positively, something I was unable to do prior to the Whole 30 challenge. My body has also decided to start showing positive physical changes. My skin is glowing, my weight is starting to decline and my eyes are alive again.

Benefits of completing the Whole 30 Challenge
    Confidence
Something I had been lacking for quite some time, second guessing myself constantly is now a thing of the past. I am loving the new confident me. It feels amazing!

    Moods
Now stable.....yipee! I am so aware of how I am feeling now. I no longer look for comfort food or wine to make me feel more relaxed after a hard day. I am also off my antidepressants and feeling wonderful.

    Sleep
I am now sleeping through the night soundly, unassisted by medication for on average 8 hours a night (unless the neighbors are having a party lol).

    Energy
What can I say but it is through the roof. I haven't felt this good for years and I no longer feel like a Nanna nap mid afternoon anymore. I am achieving all the things I have put off for years because the thought of doing them seemed so overwhelming.

    Weight Loss
I lost a total of 5.2 kilograms or 11 pounds 7 ounces over the 30 days and 19.5cm or 7.7 inches in total.

Muscle tone   My body mass index dropped from 24.3% to 22.1% over the 30 days and this was achieved by sticking strictly to the Whole 30 program and walking most days and also doing some yoga and pilates classes.

    To conclude
I have had a fantastic time doing the Whole 30 Challenge. It has taught me so much about food choices and the effects it has on our bodies physically and emotionally. I have enjoyed the benefits I have received so much that I will be sticking to the Paleo way of life as much as I possibly can. I can't wait to see how much more improvement I will see over the coming months and or hopefully years ahead.
I feel like this is a whole new chapter in my life. I'm so excited and looking forward to my future with enthusiasm and passion!

Well its been almost 2 weeks since the end of my whole 30...the last week Ive gone to bed with and woken with headaches...yesterday was my first day in a week without one..today im also headache free.....Am going to the races on Thursday and am in a corporate box (never been before) so Im going to go have fun and eat whats given to me...As for alcohol I had a couple of wines and a beer whilst on holiday but to be honest I didnt enjoy them..I think I may have had slight headaches then too....before the drinks...am peeved at myself for not doing an re intro of foods..which is something i will definetly do this time round...Made a gluten free banana cacao cake with a date and 70% chocolate topping for a final sweet treat....had one small slice and everyone else loved it...I ate it but didnt find it as decadent as a juicy steak with cashew mushroom sauce...looking forward to my next whole 30....with a proper re intro at the end...

Home ...had a wonderful relaxing break on the beach for 5 days...mostly swimming and bike riding and reading...
Good news is I stuck it out and have weighed myself since being home. All up I lost 5.3kgs and approx 27cm from by body. I forgot to measure my arms so it was calves, thighs, hips, waist and chest....am thrilled... this plan has taken away my cravings for carbs but more importantly it has given me vitality...I feel ready to go in tje mornings and have energy all day...I li,e the way Im feeling and want to stay this way. it was a very easy plan overall if I was prepared. Days when i wasnt were probably a little boring food wise....have since had a few glasses of wine and Ive had some grains and chocolate..
Im going food shopping tomorow and am looking forward to starting again....Hubby looks like he may join me and will put my daughter onto it as well....Im thinking instead of jumping straight in with them i may wean them in over two days and then full steam ahead for us all...
A sustainable way of eating..with benefits on the side..

I buy Coconut Aminos at Paleo Cafe Paddington and Primal Pantry also sell them. There's a great little shop called Pod at Stafford that isn't strictly Paleo but they sell all organic and you might find them there.

Donna Hay - so i used coconut aminos instead of soy sauce (2tbl spoons); red chilli to taste; 1/2 tsp sesame oil, 1 clove of garlic if you aren't on low fodmap and 2tbl spoons olive oil. Mix in a bowl and add 4 chicken thighs or any pieces of chicken really. Get the chicken well coated and grill a few minutes on each side until cooked. Have the grill quite high to crisp the dressing. We had broccolini and green beans with it tonight.

Week 1 is done  - woohoo!  I've not been hungry but I'm told I've been cranky ...oops!

Make sure ALL ingredients are at room temperature...if if breaks or seperates...remove from bowl and wash and dry...then add another room temp egg yolk and beat...slowly adding the first batch or mayo....it should take 4 or 5 minutes to drizzle the oil into the egg yolk...hopefully it will bind then add the egg white and maybe a little water to fluff it a bit as the extra egg yolk will thicken the mayo
    hope this helps
forgot to mention i make maye weekly and i had my first flop only this week....i think it had to do with that 1 Tbspn of lemon juice...my lemon was a tad cold....doesnt take much and i used a whole bottle of avocado oil and didnt want to waste it...

This is my third whole 30 attempt and each time I have to stop because of the same issue.  On day 12 I get really bad breath along with an empty feeling in my esophagus that almost feels like the way your stomach does when you are hungry.  Bad breath everyone in my family comments on and prior to day 12 or before my whole 30 attempts I do not have an issue at all.  I eat Paleo and have Celiac Disease and feel great, but have tried the whole 30 just to see if I feel even better.  I have no other symptoms, issue etc.  Could this possibly be the result of Candida die off?  I am at a loss and this is the only thing I can think of.
