What were you eating like before whole 30?
I have struggled for 15 years by trying to restrict calories and yo yo diet.. Seriously messed up my metabolism.. Gaining and losing 10-15kg probably 3 or 4 times.
I knew when I started this that I needed to heal my body and my metabolism first. If I'm hungry I eat (whole30 foods).. If I want to eat and it's meal time I eat... If I'm hungry between meals next day I make my portions bigger.
I don't ever want to starve my body again..
I wonder if you have come from a similar place?
Previously I would binge on stupid foods after dinner even when I was full and then feel terrible and guilty.. Is that how you're feeling now? Guilty for eating the extra food?
If so, I don't think you need to stop. Maybe cut the fruit (in case it's the sugar dragon) but make your meals a bit larger filled with wholesome nutritious whole30 foods and throw the guilt out the window and let your body heal.
This might not be your story at all but maybe someone else will read it..
But I have really struggled leading up to this and this week (I'm on day 6) and it's only now just becoming clear.

Chris - thanks for that. You may be right.. but I don't want to slide any further back down the slope of non-compliance.

I need to seriously make some changes and quickly, I've got a big competition in about 9 weeks and I'm running out of time.

Having said that.. a thought springs to mind.. maybe it doesn't need to be all or nothing for me. Maybe I don't need to call it a Whole30 right now.. and just eat mostly paleo.. give it a couple of weeks and do another Whole30 then.

I will think on this today and report back

    Thanks for being there!

Hi there! Off to a good start!
Have you read the meal template? Some of your meals are missing a fat source and that's really important.
For example your dinner on day 1 you could add half an avocado like you had with lunch.
I got this same advice early on.. I just thought it was ok to loosely follow the meal template but am always getting pulled up for not enough fat or not enough protein.
Keep posting and really use the forums...they have gotten me through some tough times!

This may be what is happening to me. Maybe I can turn this around.

    Ok here's my action plan:

    1) Ditch the fruit & seeds, include sweet potato daily
    2) Eat MORE at meal times protein/fat/veggies (especially fat)
    3) Go to bed 1 hour earlier (if I need 10 hours for now.. that's what my body needs)
    4) Stop obsessively looking in the mirror, comparing and fussing
    5) Address stress issues

SalsaEzz reacted to soulrich23 in Day 22. No weight loss, may be even some gain. Feel not so good.
I felt the SAME way. I am out of work as well and I had a few days I could not drag myself out of bed. Either I could not sleep or I was sleeping 12 hours. I had headaches and felt lightheaded. I was ANGRY most of the time. I was tired and cranky. I felt bloated and had trouble going the bathroom. I never have acne and was getting these ENORMOUS whiteheads on my face. I can go on........I was eating the last few bites of my 2 cups of vegetables like a 2 year old having a temper tantrum.....I could tell I gained weight...
    Then I woke up today.
It took 26 days......... 26 enormously hard, yucky gross bloated days. Today I feel great. I just went for a 6 mile walk with three dogs. First time in a long time I have done that. My clothes fit a bit better. My skin is a tad brighter.
THEN I saw the blog from today...about how it is not a Whole10.  I needed that.I needed to be reminded that it took 36 years to get "this bad" and 26 days to start the uptick? NOT TOO SHABBY!!!!!!! However, I am sure I have a ways to go!

hmmm. you worry that sweet potatoes will be too many carbs and prevent you from becoming fat adapted, but you eat dates and chia pudding and bananas and other fruit regularly? Tough love time. Take a step back and and look at the meal template again. Put some protein on your plate, some veggies and fat. Eat enough of them so you don't need fruit and dates and chia pudding. Eat SO MUCH of them that you are too full to even consider fruit and dates and chia pudding. Then trust that you are doing it right and relax.

If you are overweight, weight loss will come in time. How much time depends on lots of things. If you were starving yourself previously, it might take longer. If you are close to a healthy weight already it might take longer.  You might even need to gain a little before your metabolism straightens out. At the moment, sad to say, this urgency and stress you are experiencing around food and diet is a big part of the problem. Trying to ease that stress will help with weight loss, digestion, sleep...so many things will get better

Finally, although I don't say this very often, you might want to consider whether the whole30 is right for you at this moment in your life. If the restrictions of the plan feed into stress or cause you to feel obsessed with food and weight that's not a good thing. I'm not sure if this is you, but in case that resonates, here's an article: http://whole30.com/2012/02/whole30-gone-bad/

From an energy perspective, some people don't do well with low carb. That's why when we see people complaining of low energy and we don't see carb-dense veggies, that's one of the first suggestions we make. The Whole30 isn't trying to get you to ketosis  (referenced in the link you posted).

On the stress thing, you can start with focused breathing. Just watch your in breath and out breath. No expectation or judgment. Just watch, and as your thoughts drift away, just gently escort your attention back to your breath.

Ok, hide the scale for your remaining days.

Yes, eating in the way you previously described may have impacted your hormones and ability for your body to adjust. Give it time and patience.

    Chia pudding?  I'm thinking that's SWYPO ...

How about incorporating at least 1 carb dense vegetable daily?

Also, do you have a routine for managing your stress? Now might be a good time to take some active steps in that direction ...

Unfortunately there are alot of products with Natural Flavoring. I try to avoid any package foods and vitamins on my whole30. Have you tried taking calcium / magnesium supplements instead of natural calm/ N.C. alternative? I have heard people who take epsom salt baths or use a magnesium cream instead of taking magnesium. Maybe that will help. Not sure how much water you are drinking but you need a lot of water to digest protein so you might want to try increasing water.

Looks good - spice up that mayo and make it into a dip for your veggies if you're having trouble eating it. Prasley/dill can make a ranch-ish sauce, or a splash of balsamic vinegar and Italian herbs makes a lovely creamy Italian.

Good luck with the digestion...that's got to be hard. I've never gone quite as long as you with it, but hopefully having cut out your nuts and upped your veggies you'll see some relief soon!

SalsaEzz reacted to Bet in Severe constipation.. Help!
I also have Chron's and once I eliminated all the foods that triggered my diarrhea, I had awful constipation. I was almost happy about it, LOL. If you don't feel sick, beyond being bloated, I'd wait it out. I use Magnesium Glycinate and also prebiotics. I can't tolerate fermented foods, so I had to get some good bugs in there somehow. Constipation is usually a sign that you don't have a lot of good bacteria in the colon to help with moving things along.

All the other advice, drink water, eat fibrous veggies, good fats are good. Also if you are not already, try some exercise, that usually helps me. Also, once you get going, don't stop the Magnesium or other stuff. At least not for awhile. You are also right to avoid fiber. It just adds bulk.

Your body needs more carbs just before and during your period. I know I feel better when I up my carbs at that time of the month. You might want to try increasing your protein serving at your first meal as well. I've read in a couple of places this week that increased protein at your first meal helps with sleep.

Okay...that's annoying. Typed a whole post and poof my work computer decided I was done with this window. Grr. Computer you're lucky I'm not feeling Kill All the Things

So...Thanks to SalsaEzz for the catch/support. I did have fat with lunch, just didn't list it out. The squash was cooked, practically slathered in coconut oil and I keep most of the fat from cooking the beef. And the forums were a lifesaver way back for my first round of w30, and a nice place to vent during subsequent resets.

Finished Day 2 strong with dinner at my sisters. She made deconstructed tacos. Yum. Home and in bed by 10.

Focus for the first half: good food, Sleep and time management. (which affects sleep, cooking, cleaning)
Ok, the part that Really annoys me that the computer wiped my first post. I have to type my stats Again.
    Took these day 0
    weight, 157lbs

    Thighs: 24.25 for both
    Bum: 41
    Hips: 40
    Belly: 37.5
    Waist: 32.5
    Ribs: 33
    Breast: 38.75
    Underarm: 37.5

    Oy. Okay, moving on

Woke up today in a fairly good mood but with a bitchin headache. May have skimped on the liquids yesterday. That with withdrawal and the weather, I pretty much expected it. Good news, it started to fadeaway within the hour.

Chugged some water. And was very happy for my breakfast today, sweet potato, blueberries, sausage, and coconut milk. And black coffee.
Came prepared for a long day with crazy weather. Brought my lunch so if the weather is as bad as they say (thunderstorms following rain/freezing rain and snow) I won't have to slog home to eat.
also brought supplies just in case the headache comes back, or it just proves to be a long day: almond butter, apple and hb egg for a mini meal if needed. Earbuds and meditation playlist for an afternoon break/nap.

    So bring it day 3.

    Day 10
Sluggish this morning. Slept solidly and woke early.. but snoozed.. and still sluggish to get moving.
Nauseous too.. I'm thinking maybe I need to start eating at home as soon as I wake up otherwise it's about 2 hours until I eat in the office.
I'm also going to increase my portion sizes a bit see if that helps.
Good news - my grey work pants are dragging on the ground! I think this is new.
    Breakfast
Steamed kale, 3 poached eggs, 1 thumb home made whole30 mayo
    Large handful of grapes
    Lunch
Leftover vegetable & prawn curry from last night
    Dinner
Pork & Beef mince, spoon of home made mayo
Kale, tomato & mushroom sautéed in coconut oil

I get fat from olive oil dressing I put on my salad.  I eat a lot of lettuce for my veg since it's easy and travels well in a zip lock bag.  I put a generous amount of olive oil on it  and feel pretty good about it!
