    Hi There! Welcome! I look forward to seeing your progress on this journey. As a person who was struggling with depression (undiagnosed - so no meds), anxiety and extreme moodiness prior to my first whole 30 - this for me was a game changer - even though it was not the sole reason why I pursued the whole 30. Truthfully I was in denial for years, and I didn't fully realize how bad it was until well after first my whole 30. I have noticed through the years (my first whole 30 was August of 2012) that certain foods for me trigger extreme moods and depression. For me personally I am extremely sensitive to corn and soy for this. Sugar usually lights the flame but the corn and soy provide the ammunition. But for you it could be completely different. But from what I understand, soy and sugar are apparently pretty common mood disrupters. So happy to see you give this a try. I totally recommend keeping your carbs in check. I find I have a happy place - too little and I'm in a bit of mess mentally and too much I am tired and lethargic. So you will need to play around to see what works best for you. Start with a fist sized portion of starchy veggie (think any root vegetable) and go from there. I came from a SAD way of eating that was tilting to be light on meat, almost vegetarian but not quite. The first 3 days of my whole 30 I craved red meat. (Probably because I found out later that my Vitamin B levels were crazy low - apparently I don't absorb B12 well). My advice is that your body will kind of tell you what it needs most of if you stop and listen to it rather than listen what the media tells you what you should and shouldn't eat. I had no real ethical concerns (although I completely understand the ethical argument as animals from the factory farmed system are not respected as animals) I just didn't *like* meat. (or so I was raised by the media to believe). So my suggestion here, if you can afford it, and if you can make it a priority, buy meat, poultry, fish from a ethical source. One that has respected the animal and raised it to be a happy, healthy animal. Basically in accordance to how it should be raised - outdoors, eating grass, wandering around in a field. Just my thought.

    As for the nut pod - maybe ease up a little on them. Any nut milk or coconut milk serving should be around a 1/4 cup/ serving - unless you are pregnant or breast feeding. But nuts do have a tendency of causing some digestive issues so maybe keep it to 1/4 a day???

    Hi Mona, Please, please, please do not beat yourself up over this. Never do you beat yourself over a food choice. Even a non compliant one. Larabar's are one of those technically compliant items that don't really do you any favours. They don't break your whole 30, but you are feeding a sugar dragon - so no favours. So this is just a learning experience that you need not repeat. Carry onto day 2.

    Confused about date syrup?

    Hi CIAI This is one of those very grey areas that do cause a lot of controversy within the community. And I understand why. It has to do with your relationship with that thing that you are being asked to give up. And I get it. Let's say you have an addiction to coffee creamer - it's sweet, it's rich and its frothy. Yummy right? So one of the things that many people try to recreate on a whole 30 is their old foods that they have an addiction to. A date and almond milk is technically compliant right? Yep totally is. But mixing this together and putting it in your coffee is recreating an old favourite. Sweet - check. Rich - check. Frothy - yep if done with an immersion blender. But what you may not realize is that this is doing nothing for healing your relationship with food or your addiction to coffee creamer. Now I would agree with you it is a better choice than coffee creamer - but tell me why you have to recreate it? What is the real reason? I know you want to enjoy your coffee and you don't enjoy it black. I get it. But then why do you drink coffee? Do you drink it for the caffeine hit or because you really enjoy it? I asked a similar question many moons ago when I did my first whole 30. I was asking if I could make and eat paleo bread. I argued that I used it merely as a vehicle to get protein and fat into my mouth. I was asked why I needed it so badly that I could not live without it. And the truth was - I could live without it - I just didn't want to. I enjoyed baked goods too much and the thought of living without a baked good - even a rather tasteless one - scared me. So my suggestion is to examine why you feel you need it so badly. Best of luck to you!

    I would personally recommend reading It Start's with Food first. Then maybe go with The Whole 30 book (I know you did not mention that) it contains recipes as well as information.

    Sweetener, stevia hydration powder

    Try unsweetened Coconut Water. It is pretty good at replacing electrolytes. I recently used it for a hiking trip and it helped a lot.

    Hi There Paola If you are interested in the Science and the why to choose to do a whole 30 - I highly recommend reading It Starts with Food first. If you want to jump in but be prepared to know what to expect as a day by day situation - then read Day by Day. Food Freedom Forever is more for those who are in the midst of a whole 30 or have completed a Whole 30 and want to know how to move forward after doing a whole 30 without living a life of complete restriction.     Desperate to feel better

    Hi Jodi - Welcome!!!! I to am a migraine sufferer - and they are terrible. Eating Whole 30 style definitely did me a lot of good and I was able to reduce/eliminate/control my migraines simply by what I eat. I still get them (as I don't eat whole 30 or Paleo all of the time as part of my riding my own bike) but the frequency, duration and intensity has diminished substantially. A couple of things that may help you off the bat that many migraine sufferer's are deficient in is Magnesium, Vitamins B6 &12 and Vitamin D. But since I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, I would recommend getting your Vitamin D and B levels tested before starting to take supplements. Magnesium is hard to take to much as your body will just start getting rid of it and you might have diarrhea when you are taking too much Magnesium. The brand that is mentioned around these parts is Natural Calm Unflavoured. Some other stuff to delve into - Many people who have a histamine intolerance also have migraines as migraines are a symptom of histamine intolerance. Shopping list here However before you shoot off in that direction - do a regular whole 30 first - see how it goes, then if you feel you need more help with the situation take on the low histamine version. Don't go from eating SAD to low histamine - that would be too restrictive too fast and it would kind of suck. Please, please, please make sure you eat enough. This is very important. Follow the meal template here: Also don't be afraid of starchy veggies. I recommend starting off with one fist sized portion of root vegetable daily. Sometimes you will need more. When you are having a migraine and don't feel like eating because of the nausea - try to get something down - anything. Usually eggs (about the only time I will eat eggs) and sweet potatoes are my go to, along with ginger kombucha. They all help. Find the compliant foods that most appeal to you during this time, and eat them. And sometimes I will eat this 3 times a day cause that's all I want - and that's OK. I am doing my best with what is going on. Best of luck - You're in the right place.

    Early morning workout foods

    Boiled eggs and olives are good pre work out and cooked lean protein like chicken breast or canned tuna in water are good post. You could also add a starchy veg like cubed and roasted sweet potatoes as part of your post workout.

    Hey There! I've never been a big drinker (except my 20's - that was a bit different), it appeals to me occasionally, but seldom. But my boyfriend would celebrate the fact that I would indeed drink - think a loud exclamation - of a whoohoo! She's having a drink! Now she's going to have fun! I wouldn't say much to him really, just politely nod and smile (usually it was around company). But then..... he would then see the after effect of the alcohol the next day. I would be miserable, cranky, anger easily and very, very short, on top of feeling like the proverbial bag of sh*t. So quite literally I was no fun. So now when I do imbibe - it's maybe twice, 3 times a year??? I usually get a comment of - you're having a drink? Cause he knows - it totally affects me and my mood.

    Success stories for overweight children?

    I would also work on embracing the body she has right now - as it is. Basically along the lines of "It's not perfect - but it's mine - and I need to respect it" - Respect means no negative self talk and basically eating good nourishing food and just working with what's she's got for now. It learning to appreciate what her body is capable of as opposed to what it looks like. This is something I wish I had very much while growing up. Best of luck to the both of you!

    I will usually eat something that I call - my morning hash - seasoned ground meat, cooked, seasoned sweet potatoes, and a couple of good handfuls of greens cooked/wilted down. I used to throw a couple of eggs in there - which I occasionally do now - but now I am mostly egg free - my skin is relatively clear (occasional eczema flare). I second the salmon cake recipe - there's a good one from NomNom Paleo that uses coconut flour (not a nut BTW). You could try a gelatin substitute instead of eggs. (I have not tried this) In order to help you skin heal - try making and drinking bone broth. I have found personally that consuming gelatin in any form (whether it be bone broth, gelatin or Collagen Hydrolysate) extremely helpful for my multiple skin issues. You can consume bone broth through soups and stews too. By any chance are you cooking/eating a lot of ghee? If you are extremely dairy sensitive (which I know I am now) even ghee can cause problems for skin issues. So if you are using it - I would suggest to drop it for a bit and see if things clear up.

    Nightshades could be causing it as well are eating too many nuts, nut butters, and eggs. Dropping eggs was hugely beneficial for me. I still have eggs in my mayo - but if it is a good quality egg - I seem to tolerate much better.
  16. I have not been formally diagnosed with osteoarthritis or arthritis for that matter. I am simply an (almost) 40 yr old woman with knee and hip problems. Or what used to be problems. What I have noticed that gives me pain are eggs specifically, as well as egg plants. Peppers and Tomatoes do bother me - but more in the vein of skin problems. They cause skin fissures and psoriasis. Since I do like eggs, peppers, and tomatoes - They are relegated to "eat sparingly" list. Meaning I will not eat any one more than twice a week. Less if I can. I do get *some* inflammation - but not much. The ideal thing to do is cut them out completely for 30 days. But I think it totally depends on how bad your symptoms are. If you notice a difference by cutting them out for a week - you might actually enjoy being pain free for a bit. So you might be motivated to cut them out longer. You should definitely cut back on them. Also what I have noticed with time is that I tolerate cooked nightshades with no skin over raw and with skin on. Eggs - I find I tolerate well sourced eggs, much better than not. I have also discovered that I have issues more with the white than the yolk.

    Yes - sometimes it takes some of us longer to go through things than others. Remember we are all unique snowflakes - the timeline is just based on what happens on average. My first whole 30 - I was about 10 days off.

    You might want to consider adding more vitamin D rich foods in as well - fatty cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines Liver - If you are adverse to the taste of liver maybe make pate and then mix the pate in with meatballs. Eggs are also a good source of vitamin D. I have heard that mushrooms and dark leafy greens will be helpful in this regards as well. Definitely drop the nuts. They probably are helping your condition - many people have issues with nuts. Including me where I have issues with them disrupting my sleep. I would not have salad more than once a day - and make sure the salad is HUGE. You have to think about all that lettuce in wilted form. So mixing bowl size. Also some of us have a hard time digesting raw veggies. So try to get most of your veggies cooked. Have you ever tried roasting veggies? Any veggie roasted in oil or fat, plus salt and pepper are amazing.

    Hi Connie, Sorry you are still having issues.... Speaking from personal experience here - I find if I have too many starchies - example one with every meal with no green stuff - I get tired and lethargic. If I eat too little my brain gets angry and sad. So it's all about finding the right balance for you. Yes I know greens are pricey but they might be helpful along with a big dose of fat. You might be having some issues with switching over. I know on my first whole 30 I struggled with sleep and exhaustion too. I did see glimmers of energy - but nothing concrete until day 23 or 24. I actually haven't found Kale too pricey as it is indeed a winter vegetable. (Kale was a staple for me growing up, and we grew it even in our garden. It's best harvested after the first frost) Same with collards. Broccoli and Cauliflower on the other hand.... completely different story. I also load up on frozen green veg when its on sale. So there are ways to work with it. Where about's in the great white north do you live? I'm originally from Ontario - so I might be able to help out a little if you are from the GTA area as well.

    Okay meals look generally pretty good but there are a couple of things that could use some tweaking. You don't mention what veggies are in your meal 1 - sometimes the types of veggies do matter somewhat. For instance if you are eating salad for breakfast, that would satiate you differently then lets say a mix of potato, kale and spinach. (The greens would be wilted or cooked down. And you should aim for at least a cups worth of cooked wilted greens) Also note that most cooking fat gets left behind in the pan. So feel free to add additional fat like olives or homemade mayo to your dish. 1 tbsp of sunshine sauce is not a lot - the recipe in itself is made to feed 2 people.. So just to recap: Play around with fat portions in your meals. Make sure your meals satiate you for 4 - 5 hours. You may need to add a starchy vegetable in - not sure. Include a fist sized starchy veg in your next meal, or your morning meal - play around with that. See how that works. I know my energy level lagged quite a bit in the beginning. I had issues with it until Day 22 I believe.

    The crazy things people say

    Recently I had lunch with my boss. I had been explaining why grains could be potentially bad for people. Then our plates arrived. B: How is it that you will eat a potato but bread and pasta you won't eat and consider them bad for you? M: Easy. A potato is a vegetable. Vegetables on average don't bother me. Clearly he thought in his mind that I was doing some form of Atkins..... Although truth be told I have never totally explained what a whole 30 was. I have always told him that I eat mostly whole unprocessed foods which focuses on protein, vegetables and fruit, and healthy fats.

    MM - as cayenne mentions above - it is completely up to you after you do your elimination. I know my particular relationship with dairy is mine, and mine alone. I suffered for many years from an embarrassing painful skin condition that I developed in my early teens. I had no idea what caused it. I just thought it was an unhappy part of my life. And as time passed the skin condition got worse, and more aggressive. Most days I was in agony. Dr's prescribed creams that really didn't help. Or they gave me instructions to "clean myself better". It came to the point where I didn't bother consult the medical community anymore as they couldn't help me. So I suffered in silence. 3 years ago I finished my first whole 30. I had many positive NSV's. Then I did re-intro's and I discovered that my beloved dairy was the culprit for my pain. I will have a skin reaction to cheese within 4 to 6 hours of eating it. Milk and yogurt will cause me to bloat, and I will be visiting the washroom often (record is 7 times in one morning) It was one that I did play suspect over the years, but allergy tests were inconclusive. But dairy - unless it is really, Really, REALLY special - is just plain not worth it to me. I wish I would get a minor bloat and that is it. To me then it be worth it then too. But all I am saying from my own non-sciencey standpoint is that you never know how you will feel until afterwards and you do the re-intros.

    What symptoms did you feel with which foods?

    Wow Noelle - you and I are sugar twins - Combine sugar with soy - I become just a plain miserable, mean, short tempered tyrant. Depression soon kicks in afterwards. To think that was my normal for many years..... Cheese - within 4 to 6 hours of consuming cheese I have an Hidraenitis Suppurativa reaction Any other dairy - upset stomach, and basically extreme evacuation mode within the hour of consumption. Evacuation process has been know to last for 24 hours or more. Gluten Grains - if item has a high fat content reaction is minor. If no fat content - it will feel like I swallowed a bowling ball. However I noticed a correlation between grain consumption and intensity of menstrual migraines. Also notice head scales, and roseacea flare after consuming gluten. Gluten free grains - gassy, bloating, odd combination of constipation and explosive diarrhea (sorry for the TMI) Rice - constipation for a minimum of 48 hours. Legumes - same as Gluten Free grains I am also sensitive to a lot of AIP foods Raw tomatoes or peppers - I get a psoriasis flare. Cooked seems to be ok Nuts - the usual bloating and digestive distress. And they mess up my sleep Eggs - within a half hour my knee and hip are aching. The quality of eggs make the difference here. Cage free eggs are better (but still cause joint tenderness) Also correlation between eggs and eczema. Dropping dairy helped significantly, however still had eczema pretty badly on my hands. It has since completely cleared.

    Noticing More Acne

    Acne can be a symptom of your hormones adjusting - but it also can be a symptom of others things too. Foods that seem to affect skin: Nuts, (and nut butters as mentioned above) tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, and eggs. Also crappy oils will affect your skin as well.(poor quality oils are not really on plan - but I thought I would throw that out there just as an FYI). I also have issues with pork giving me some pretty big and powerful pimples - so I have to watch my consumption of pork and make sure that all pork consumed has been well cooked. So if you are eating ANY of the above in large vast quantities - it might be time to scale back and see what happens.
