I'm glad you started this topic. I'm doing no fruits, no nuts, no squash, no roots because they are all too irritating for my stomach. I am doing a lot of green veggies and I'm not counting carbs, so maybe I won't be in ketosis, but I am going to follow this thread. Your posts are very motivating!

I pretended there wasn't any set way for me to feel and no such thing as carb flu.   I pretended that I could complete any Whole 30 without whining and stay upbeat for my family.  I pretended that black coffee was great and compliant good fats were better than anything in any bakery...anywhere in the Universe.     I pretended in the very beginning...that Melissa helped me throw compliant items in my grocery cart.   If I circled the refined food aisles too many times,  I pretended that she led me out the door and back down the road.   I pretended all kinds of things and every one of them worked.  I even pretended that Kirkor was my brother from a different mother....because he makes me laugh and smile every day.    I've pretended nothing.   Nothing.    I believe all of it to be true.   It came true and I could not be happier eating fish, fats and vegetables.   They've made me feel like a stellar feller or that person I've always wanted to be...or she became me.      Kirkor.

Thank you for yet another very useful link, Kirkor! I'm weening out most of my fruit this week. I know I could look this up but what say you about carbs in acorn squash, which I am just adoring this week.

Hi Augie just wanted to mention that it's all so related - I have sibo and am going on ketwhole30 in feb after my first jan whole30. I'm researching both the selected carbo and keto diets (very similar) for sibo.

Hi Praxis - re your prev quest on leaky gut - yes I was diagnosed with lg years ago. LG and SIBO and IBS and Candida and Celiac and and and and our GUTS are very much related. It could very well be that I had LG because of SIBO years ago and didn't know it. So we're looking at the whole pic - hopefully with major dietary changes and awareness, I'll heal the SIBO and that will take care of any LG/candida issues as well.

Check out this Digestive Health Institute page which has a nice breakdown of all the above mentioned gut issues and associated diets including keto/lowcarb.

Very common with onions Dr Emily, especially if they're white, yellow/brown or caramelised in the pan. Spring onions (shallots?) have more green, less sugar. Purple onions are a little lower than yellow/brown but still tasty. The effect is dimmed if consumed with other veggies.

Augie - I found out after my first Whole30, it was quite a shock, but has explained a number of ailments which have baffled doctors for years. I couldn't get the biopsy though as I couldn't eat the "gluten challenge" diet for long enough. Gluten induced ataxia was very scary. I totally agree on the grains front, far more than just wheat is a problem for me. Everything on this list makes me sick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prolamin So many things I see marked gluten free are not, which is very dangerous to newbies. So many of the ingredients can be confusing too. When I first found out, I ate my gluten free toast with vegemite (an Aussie favourite) and it's loaded with gluten (brewers yeast).

I have celiac too! I was finally diagnosed a little over a year ago after suffering from migraines and severe stomach problems my entire life. I went to so many doctors and specialists and none of them could figure it out (I was told by one doctor that my problems were cause by cinnamon ?!?!). If you haven't read Breaking the Vicious Cycle I really recommend it. There is a great chapter on celiac. The author claims that celiac is actually caused by all grains (not just gluten) and dairy. It is totally true for me. I cut out grains and dairy shortly after my diagnoses and tried to add them back in this summer and I got soooooo sick!

In my experience, a very strict "well-formulated" ketogenic diet, and/or GAPS/SCD, for several months to years is usually the best natural course of action to effectively treat SIBO and heal the gut (various herbs - Goldenseal, Oregano Oil, etc. - and/or supplements - L-Glutamine, probiotics, etc.) are also necessary in most cases, and targeted antibiotics such as Rifaximin are sometimes absolutely necessary in stubborn cases to get things back on track).

Check out this paper (pp 40-53) for detailed info on what a "well-formulated" keto diet looks like according to Dr. Jeff Volek (keto diet researcher and book author).

And for folks interested in learning more about SIBO and how to treat it (with diet, herbs, and/or targeted anti-biotics), do you know  about Dr. Alison Siebecker? She's a SIBO specialist, and very knowledgeable. Here's her website, with some great info and resources:

Hi, it's to encourage die off but also, according to the scd diet, people with damaged stomachs can't digest foods that aren't monosachirides and the undigested food hangs out in the stomach and ferments which causes sibo. However, fruits and nuts are monosachirides but they can be difficult for damaged stomachs to digest and can also cause fermentation in the stomach and, like you said, eliminating them encourages die off.
By repopulation do you mean eating ferments? The scd recommends eating fermented yogurt and veggies, unfortunately I can't tolerate either for right now so I take enzymes and a soil based probiotic.

The scd diet is for people with damaged stomachs from celiac, crohns, colitis etc. Part of the diet is to heal sibo and leaky gut and all the other problems that come with GI issues. So just by following the diet, for an extended period of time, all those issues should be resolved. Plus, the diet recommends lots of bone broth!I'm sorry that this is such a departure from the ketosis topic.

Does Sibo treatment look at leaky gut at all? or only the stomach?

After eating a whole pound of Brussels sprouts last night, I was looking at the net carbs in different veggies ... this list is pretty cool, sorted by net carb per 1/2 cup: http://www.ruled.me/best-low-carb-vegetables-ketogenic-diet/

For the probiotics it would help some fermented foods like sauerkraut, or even compliant pickles, the fruits are a no-no to fight tummy bacteria and candida.

best to you! We are on the same boat!

    Hey, Bronnyd
I have sibo too and follow the scd diet along with whole 30. I can't tolerate dairy so I don't do the yogurt. I know that with sibo you can only eat monosaccharides so that means sweet potatoes are out. You can eat fruit and nuts on the scd diet, but only if your stomach can handle them. My stomach is really irritated by fruit and nuts so I'm kind of doing keto by default. According to my doc most people with sibo also have candida and the natural sugars in fruit feed the candida. So maybe you should ask your doc about it. I hope that helps.

Hi Augie Thank you for the insight on candida. I'm thinking I should cut out the fruit and go keto. Hard decision.
I think I'm going to gradually do it. Eliminate slow rather than cold turkey - and then see how I feel for a couple weeks without fruit. Then when I reintroduce fruit, I'll know more clearly whether or not it's affecting mre.

My doc put me on antibiotics (finished now) and nystatin. She also said I could start herbal remedies such as oregano and cinnamon, which I'm doing. All of the herbal remedies and nystatin also treat candida and I did wonder if there was a correlation - would make sense. Funny she did not mention candida though so I will ask her about it next time.
