  1. Super easy one yesterday. Ground beef/turkey combo, diced red pepper, snow peas and a big handful of baby kale. Served with some pickled jalapeños and a blop of mayo.
  2. Oh, fun! As it is currently Eight Billion Degrees here today, I thought I'd start off this morning with a salad. And yes, I ate it out of a huge tupperware because as we always say, your salad needs to be huge and all my large bowls were busy. Contained potatoes, olives, pickles, peppers, tomatoes, greens, cucumbers, a hunk of meatloaf and this dressing.
  3. The Whole30 tends to rebalance all of your hormones, hunger, sex and stress as well as the rest of them that we are less familiar with. Being late with your period despite some symptoms is pretty common. Take a read through this thread you've posted in and you'll see lots of similar comments. It's normally nothing to be concerned with but of course none of us here are medical professionals, if you are worried see your doctor.
  4. If you are concerned, always check with your doctor, no one here is a medical professional and all comments are opinions and personal experience. That said, there is never going to be anything wrong with eating protein, vegetables and fat. It's how our bodies are designed to function. If you came from something dramatically different than the Whole30, your hormones likely have some rebalancing to do and part of that rebalancing can include delayed or irregular periods for a time. It typically all rearranges itself to a proper pattern and there are no lasting effects. Also remember that if your body has a lot of healing to do, it may prioritize that over the fertility cycle; mammals will generally not want to have babies when their bodies are out of flux and will work to realign first. My opinion is that unless there is a chance that you are actually pregnant, your period will turn up.
  5. Hi Caitlin, you are free to reintro in the schedule that you note. Your reintro process would certainly take longer but if you're fine with that and have the time, go for it! The sugar in ice cream thing is a tough one because the ice cream could also have carrageenan in it so you wouldn't know if it was sugar, dairy or an additive that bothered you. Each thing should be reintro'd completely alone. We also find some people reintroing soy separate from other legumes because soy is such an issue. Different types of dairy (whey vs casein) could also be reintro'd separately depending on what your goals at the end are. It's really up to you how specific and how long you make it.
  6. Absolutely. Usually the wacky period during or shortly after your Whole30 is a result of your hormones rebalancing. There are many cases of women, myself included, who, by sticking very close to Whole30, have regulated various issues. For me I have no more mentrual migraines, no more mid month spotting (used to be equivilant to a second 2-3 day period) no more wicked cramps. And I'm extremely regular.
  7. Mine are definitely levelling out. It's taken a few months of consistent Whole30 eating. I wouldn't say I have an easy time yet but I no longer have estrogen-drop menstrual migraines every month and my cramps and bleeding are manageable whereas I used to not be able to leave the house for 2 days.
  8. I used to use fresh fruit purees but didn't love the sludge that was left at the bottom of each bottle. I use juice now, plain Grape juice in 2F (and English Breakfast in first brew) and it comes pretty close to the GT's grape. And it's nice and clear. I've found that raspberry puree, cherry puree + vanilla and the grape juice are the only ones where the flavour of the finished product is even close to the flavourings that I put in. (I had decent luck with apple juice, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods and a clove....a LOT like Brew Dr. Apple Chai) I'm considering purchasing a juicer so I can make my own juices to flavour.....but then I think, I make absolutely everything we eat or use on our bodies, do I really want to make something else? LOL. I use the Ikea flip top bottles so had to puree the fruit or I'd never get it out of the bottles.
  9. Oh, yes, orange juice gives nice fizz also! I did a pomegranate orange combo that was really good....but pure pomegranate juice is super expensive!
  10. Just wanted to post a new and kind of odd flavour that turned out INSANELY fizzy and quite delicious. Basically I was looking for juice that is just juice, no additives, and not a billion dollars. Enter prune juice. Seriously. The first brew was done with English Breakfast tea and the second fermentation was 3 cups KT and 1 cup prune juice. I found the finished product had a bit of a strange after taste to it but my hubby put a squirt of lemon in and it is fantastic!! It'll be one of my repeat flavours around here, for sure! If you make this one, definitely make sure to burp your bottles during second ferment, it gets pretty pressurized!
  11. I had a weird long stint of light spotting this Whole30 also. I think sometimes it has to do with where in your cycle you start. I started Whole30 on the second day of my period, went as per normal for the week and then pretty much spotted and bled for the whole next week. My period is due to start on Feb 1st and I have some of the normal "pre" symptoms (boobs, softness around the middle) but no severe cravings, no headache, no moodiness. It's all about the hormones rebalancing. Do see your doctor if you feel that your spotting is cause for concern though as no one here is a medical professional. As far as your pooping it could be a simple answer of tweaking what you're eating. Post a couple days of food including quantities eaten, fluids, exercise, sleep and stress and let's see if there is anything that stands out.
  12. Haha, I sort of do this too, "rough cooking". I buy the pre sliced mushrooms from Costco but they are enormous so I throw in the pan and just split them with my spatula. It doesn't all have to be pretty.
  13. You're not lazy at all, you're adapting to a new system of preparation. It gets easier and you get faster!
  14. I've been doing pomegranate orange...which is amazingly delicious but much too expensive to continue with. The pomegranate juice I buy is 100% pomegranate...but it's also over $10 for a litre bottle so that's too crazy for me. I may start watching Craigslist for a juicer....so that I can juice in season fruits and then I know exactly what is in them. I used to do fruit purees but it makes the end product quite murky & sometimes chunky which I don't enjoy.
  15. Try your next breakfast without the added fat and see how you do. If you're hungry before 4-5 hours is up you'll have your answer!
  16. Keep it on the counter and let it ferment. Just keep burping it to avoid any explosions. You might end up growing a new little scoby in the bottles but you can either just drink it or strain it out. To avoid this problem in future, I would do the first ferment until the taste is slightly MORE sour/tart than you prefer. Then add your juice and second ferment for 2-3 days. For me that makes it just slightly more tart than what you buy in the grocery store which is how I like it.
  17. I use any juice I can find that does not have any additives. My favourite right now is 4 cups of kombucha, about 2/3 cups of pomegranate juice and 1/3 cup of orange juice. SO good.
  18. Dearmrsarmstrong, a Whole30 isn't a detox and a week or so of sugar, dairy and bread shouldn't cause you a horrible reaction if you choose not to eat them. Most people can avoid the "carb flu" by making sure that they eat enough starchy veggies along with adequate amounts of protein and fat.
  19. The brown stringy stuff that shows up in second ferment is usually yeast that is hanging off itself or a little scoby. I find my teeny tiny scobies tend to be clear whereas my main guy is solid.
  20. Three weeks early as in, on the heels of your last period? Or is it around ovulation and could be middleschmertz? Possible also that although you didn't notice any change on your first Whol30, you've started this one at a different stage of your cycle and as such a change in your hormones due to intake shift has caused some spotting? As always, we are not doctors or medically trained so if you are worried about it, by all means, see your doctor.
  21. I think that a scoby built on an herbal tea is not as healthy as one grown on conventional tea so it's possible that she succumbed because she didn't have the right pH? Healthy scobies need the tannins in black tea (or green, oolong etc) to thrive. Maybe try growing your own using plain GT kombucha and some sweet black tea? 1 cup of heated water, 1 teabag, 1/8 cup of sugar added to the bottle of GTs plain and then set with a cloth on top for about 14 days.
  22. GTs gingerade and their grape flavour are my two favourites. Recently I got the grape down pat and now I'm goign to start working on the gingerade. I think a lot has to do with what combo of tea you use for the initial fermentation because flavouring, to me, only seems to take it so far. I wondered if using ginger juice and lemon zest (so more gingery and the essence of a bit of lemon instead of the tartness of the juice) might work so that's where I'll go first.
  23. Karin ~ I've personally found that after 3 eggs, I can add as many more as I could stuff in me but they don't provide the same satisfaction and "appetite duration" as if I keep the eggs at about 2 and add a couple ounces of meat. Maybe give that combo a try if the eggs aren't doing it for you?
  24. For breakfast (and when breakfast is for dinner), I almost always eat a meat protein with the eggs (usually a couple ounces of meat protein and 2 eggs) because just eggs alone doesn't seem to keep me going as long and I really prefer to use eggs in at least one meal a day in order to keep costs down.
