Three Strikes and You’re Out? Not This Guy!

Like just about everyone else on this planet, I am no stranger to some of life’s harsh experiences. I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, declared personal bankruptcy, and went through an emotionally devastating divorce all within a period of six years.

Some days were so dark, all I wanted to do was die.

The only problem was, I kept waking up again the next day. Ultimately I had a decision to make. I could continue to let life beat me down, or I could make lemonade out of the lemons I was given.

Somehow I still believed there were better possibilities for myself… much better possibilities! By choosing to make the best of my experiences, life soon began to improve beyond my wildest expectations.

As for CLL, I’ve been part of a clinical study since October, 2010. However, because I haven’t experienced the many negative side effects of the study drug Lenalidomide, I’m very much convinced that I’m in the PLACEBO GROUP! That’s why my doctors are amazed; my monthly blood tests remain normal and stable – all without treatment.

I still consider my mindset to be the #1 reason for my current state of health. When I remarried in 2008, of course I had to disclose my health issues. Understandably, my wife-to-be was quite concerned. I was highly energetic and in great shape when we first met and even though she is 12 years younger than me, I could easily outdo her in just about any physical activity. To reassure my new wife, I teased her that I would still be kicking her butt when I was 100 years old!

What started out as a tease has now becoming THE #1 DRIVING FORCE in my life. I'm on the 100-year-plan! Not bad for a guy who, when I was first diagnosed in 1999, was told I probably wouldn't see my 60th birthday! Well, just look at me NOW! :)

Having said that, Nutrition is right up there at #2 in importance when it comes to maintaining my current health status. And now that I'm taking on the Whole30 with the goal of making this part of my 100-year-plan, I feel I've got the two most important components to my longevity nailed.

I'm still very much into exercise and fitness which is my third component. I look forward to sharing experiences and comparing notes with all of you here in this group!

    All the best from Toronto,
    Russ
