Willow14 reacted to angledge in Whole30 for Lent: starting February 18th.
I've been drowsy this week. I blame the switch to Daylight Savings Time. I definitely was short of sleep on Sunday night: I had a bad dream about oversleeping my alarm that woke me up at 3 AM, then I finally got back to sleep in time for the actual alarm to go off at 5 AM. Which felt like 4 AM. I feel like I've been trying to catch up on sleep since then.

On my first Whole30 attempt last November, I flunked out on Day 22. Today is Day 22. I have lunch & dinner already planned. So - barring unforseen calamity - I will make it further on this Whole30 than I did on my last attempt! I really think I will make it all the way through this Whole30 & I'm planning to do the re-introduction schedule too.  Very excited!

MeadowLily, you are close to sounding like the Bene Gesserit "Litany Against Fear" from Dune: "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing... only I will remain."

"I must not fear fat. Fat is the fat-killer. Fat is the satiety signal that brings total satisfaction. I will face my fear of fat. I will permit fat to pass into me and through me. And when it has gone into me I will turn the inner eye to see its effect. Where the fat has gone there will be less fat.... only I will remain."

AggieS, hoping you're still hanging in there, and if you're not-guess what? Monday can be day 1. I'm speaking from personal experience here No shame in starting over, and starting over again....there are so many new habits and skills to absorb, it can take more than one try for many of us.

Unstructured time is for sure more difficult. I have tried to make hot showers my 'new wine'. At least for me, at the end of the day, I feel like I need some physical release, a way to decompress. A long hot shower (hopefully w/o kids hammering on the bathroom door) is helpful for me. NOT the same as a nice little alcohol kick, BUT it's something, and something to replace the old habit with.

My goals right now are slowing down and enjoying food at meals, building meals around protein and not eating between. Yesterday I did *ok* with the first two, but certainly snacked. So I still need 7 more days for my t-shirt goal.

    Have a good Sunday everyone!

I fully understand that not weighing oneself is part of the Whole30 Program. I get that. I'm doing that. That being said....

One's body weight, when measured with an accurate scale, is not "just a number". It is a data point. It is one of many, many data points, true. But I think this conversation's gone a bit too far in downplaying the value of actual data. Should anyone obsess over their weight? No. But should we go to the opposite extreme & insist it's "just a number", implying that it has no value at all?

If someone has been weighing themselves every day for a long time, it can be one of many things. It can be a habit, like waking up & looking out the kitchen window while sipping a cup of tea. It can be an unhealthy obsession, that leads to disordered eating & self-hatred. But it can also be a valuable source of self-knowledge - no, really. Small data points like weight, collected & looked at over time, can reveal trends. A woman might notice how her weight fluctuated in time with her cycle. A stress eater might notice that they gained weight every time a billing period was ending at work. A shift worker might see a gain/loss in weight when switching from days to nights.

So what I'm saying is - while the Whole30 Program does indeed say not to weigh during the 30 days, it is taking it too far to say that weighing yourself is a completely worthless practice. Just my $0.02. Perhaps I'm just revealing myself to be a data nerd, but I am a scientist so it's a professional hazard.

Cinagain, it sounds like the scale is not a useful tool for you. I'm just saying it's a big leap from there to say it's not useful for anyone.

Count me in! I am going to start my second wole30 for lent after a failed attempt in January. I completed my first whole 30 in November thanks to the fantastic group support ... January I thought of going solo and I lasted 10 days ... Here I am ready to go.

Good for you! See, you're already turning it around. (Mmmm, fresh ground beef sounds amazing.)

I like to think of all of this as a journey, not a plan that I'm either doing right or doing wrong. It's like hiking up a hill - some days, when I'm in the middle of a W30, I've got a quick, even pace and I'm trucking up that hill. Other days, like on the weekend when I had three (amazing) slices of pizza, I tripped and stumbled on my hike. But I don't look down the hill and think, "That's it, I tripped. I should just go back to the bottom." I just get up, brush myself off, and keep heading up. And I don't look back - e.g. I do NOT regret that pizza.

It sounds like today is going to be a better day for you. Enjoy that casserole and beef!

Thanks so much for setting this up!

Abigayle - I had hamburger for breakfast not too long ago - hard to believe I used to only be able to eat muffins and scones (or leftover pie.)

I am trying to go for longer but I inadvertently had a food-without-breaks moment this weekend.  I ordered the coconut wraps and decided to use one for breakfast with some almond butter and very thinly sliced apple.  It was good but the problem was it totally awakened my sugar dragon and I quickly gobbled up two more of the same.  The total amount of food (maybe slightly more than a tablespoon of almond butter and half an apple) wasn't horrible but I felt super stuffed and yucky after I ate and it seems to have re-awakened my sugar cravings.  These last few days have definitely been harder and I am now thinking about goodies and perseverating on future decisions (like maybe in two weeks on vacation I'll drink wine.)   Three days ago I wasn't missing anything in particular; now I'm feeling hungry more frequently and definitely craving some sweets.

I know this is not supposed to be a 365 day reset but I am feeling like I will never swing the food "addiction."

Hey guys! I hope more people take advantage of our post whole30 log here! It is nice to be in a group with something like this I have allowed some sugar but I think that is the only thing I am really eating any different. I really love the way I feel eating whole30. I am in for another one in January! However, for the next one I am going to get nuts and nut butters away from me. Sometimes I feel really bloated and heavy after I eat them...anyone else feel this way? Its definitely a no brake food for me! Also, any sort of dried fruit or plantain chip/banana chips. They really aren't any better than some other types of snacks food right? So definitely none of them in January!

Even though I am post-official whole30 I am still embracing some new veg and meat combos. I just cubed and roasted an entire eggplant and it was absolutely delicious!! I love the fall/winter veg varieties.

I hope everyone is looking forward to a happy (and healthy) Christmas season. I wish you all the best )

Willow, I know what you mean! It really isn't as good as we remember.
Back on track today but did have some cravings. Man sugar is so wicked! Slight headache now too, not sure what brought it on. I seem to have crappy days after reintroduction days. Tonight I snapped at my mom and then got into an argument with hubby. Also my kids seemed to have a particular knack for driving me nuts today. Coincidence? I think not.
Invented a yummy recipe at dinner. I baked a huge spaghetti squash until tender. Then I mixed it with some chopped cooked turkey (maybe 4 cups?), a garlic clove, a little bit of minced onion, some Italian seasoning, salt and pepper, a handful of fresh spinach, a can of tomato paste, and a can of diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and onions. Baked it all until bubbly. It was almost sweet to me. Served it with olives and raw baby carrots.
Hope everyone has a good day tomorrow.

Hello team November glad we are still sharing our experience on here, it helps a lot. I lost 6 pounds during the whole30, didnt measure myself before so no idea if I lost inches, clothes feel the same ... The great discovery is that I can do without chocolate and cookies, I had some yesterday and they didn't taste as yummy as I remembered! Too sweet ... Too fake! If anyone had said I would feel this way a month ago I would have suggested they were out of their mind! Bread is another story though ... I will have to stay away from it a bit longer ... As it has an emotional hold on me ... I ate some the other day and afterwards I realised that it wasn't because I liked it it was because of what's going on emotionally in my life at the moment ... It didn't feel good ... I didn't feel good about eating it ... So I decided to do yoga .... And continue to eat the new way unless it is a special occasion. I signed up to do the 30 day yoga challenge, since I was able to finish the whole 30 I can do this challenge as well ... It's free on doyoga.com. All the best to everybody on here

    Hello Team November!

Glad to see so many folks made all the way to Day30 - well done, all of you! As for me, I bailed on Day 22-ish - I had a huge work crisis boil up, then had a bad Saturday, & then had an accidental drive-by of my favorite pizzeria while I was super-hangry. Yeah, a well-reasoned departure.

ANYWAY, I still feel that I have learned so much from the Whole30. I'm still eating NEARLY compliant - even Thanksgiving was quite close (I made my cornbread stuffing because my brother begged for it, & he made a traditional apple pie). Now I'm still eating Whole30 breakfasts, generally Whole30 lunches, & maybe two-thirds Whole30 dinners. The major difference is I'm eating out occasionally without grilling the servers about ingredients. Oh, & I've had a few beers. :-)

I am definitely going to give the full-on, pure Whole30 another go, probably for Lent 2015. I will be SO MUCH better prepared for Round 2, because of what I learned from Round 1. In the meantime, I'm working on getting some more exercise into the mix - I've joined a swim team here in Denver (we did 3,200 yards last night - 1.8 miles!). I'm also increasing my repertoire of Whole30-compliant recipes - and filling my freezer with ready-to-go meals.

Anyway I wanted to come say congratulations to those who made it all the way through. And if anyone wants to do another one, starting on or about February 18, 2015 - I'm sure there will be a Forum thread! Hopefully I'll have as good as team as this one.

Congratulations to all of us, and if you are still on this journey for a few days longer, best wishes! Day 30 is over for me! I will continue for a few more days ... There isn't any food I really miss at the moment ... So we ll see! Thank you all, you have been great companions.

Stop, breathe, focus on how you will feel after diving into the ice cream bowl .... Throwing away the distance covered so far .... Deep inside you know after the ice cream you won't feel better it will not magically sweep the exasperation away!
This is what I say to myself every time I am ready to throw the towel and get off the program.... Hope it helps

Thanks Willow! I just went to bed in the end. Actually those moments where I want to break into the sweets are getting fewer and further between. My mood is much more stable lately. Hubby told me I am much nicer to be around when I am eating this way. I told him about my plan to go off reading at Christmas and he told me I would be very crabby that week, and then the next week I would be even worse. Didn't realize I was so predictable, lol! I often think about the fact that I am doing this partly for my family. When I feel bad about my body I tend to feel bad about everything. I heard a line in a song one time that went, "I'm the only mom they've got." I think about that a lot, how these little beings are so dependent on me, and I owe it to them to be the best me.
I am going to start experimenting with paleo baked treats for the kids. And I am going to make a list of all the meats and veggies they already like.
Ok, my daughter is begging me to make pancakes and I told her she should eat meat and vegetables, and she just told me she promises to eat some broccoli and meat with her pancake. Lol!

Day 20 here and there's a blizzard outside my window right now. Between that and my PMS cramps, today kind of sucks. But I did just enjoy my favourite paleo tuna patties with a tomato and avocado salad and some butternut squash soup. So things could be worse

Ten days left. I hope to handle this reintroduction a little better than the last one. Things went downhill rather quickly.

Day 18 today for me and I am looking for any positive change in the way I feel, headaches have not left me for good yet, there are days when I still get them. Tiger blood should be around the corner, at the moment it seems to be in a far far away land. I miss porridge in the morning ...the only food I really miss. On the positive side I have stuck to this program for 18 days and I am still on it despite not feeling any better/ different than I felt before I began. Let's see what happens in the next 12 days.
Fabulous job everybody, keep it going!
