  1. I have a colleague whom I teach with that raises cows and pigs. I asked him questions because he is a direct meat source, and a local farmer I would love to support. He teaches kids how to build robots AND he farms. That’s a win win to me. Everyday he leaves school on time to make especially sure the babies are well fed their natural diet of cow and pig milk, because you know sometimes farmers have to bottle feed the babies. He has enough land for the animals to frolic freely and happily for their whole lives. He doesn’t inject them with junk or stack them on top of each other. He doesn’t hold them hostage to “finish them” before he processes them. Aside from the food I’m sure they forage for on his land he also feeds them barley. I know that I cannot have barley for 30 days, but can my food have consumed barley? This is probably a really stupid question considering that I can do way worse for meats, but I thought I would make sure.

    Your food’s food, and barley

What your meat was fed is actually a major concern. High quality protein was covered pretty extensively in It starts with Food Chapter 13, and here is a direct quote, “Here’s what matters: the way the animal was raised and the food it was fed.” Excerpt From It Starts With Food Melissa Hartwig & Dallas Hartwig This material may be protected by copyright. I’m trying to cover my bases on “the food it was fed.”

    Teen daughter new to Whole30

I also saw a post earlier up from a teenager who wants to do the whole 30, but wasn’t sure if his/her parents were going to be on board. I don’t know if it would help to connect your daughter and this person, but I thought I would point it out.

    Teen daughter new to Whole30

Have you printed a copy of the no scale victory pdf? Maybe that will help. Also, and Im not trying to advertise for something else here, I’m not personally affiliated or making money from this, but there is a site called body gallery I think? It’s a site where you can look up people who are the same age as you who also have the same body type and dimensions as yourself to see that everyone is different and there is no such thing as a “normal” body type. The sudden weight gain is concerning, but maybe take the focus away from that. One of the aspects of the whole 30 is to eat things that make you psychologically healthy and change your relationship with food, and I think making that a focus point might be counterintuitive to that. Not that you guys are focusing on it, but as a teenager it can be a bigger deal than we might see on the surface. I’m not a doctor, psychiatrist, or whole 30 expert. However, I was a kid who gained 20 pounds a year and dealt with depression and body image issues. I was pretty hard on myself and was not comfortable in my skin for a long time. Some of that stemmed from the mixed messages I got from my parents about food and eating, but I digress because this is not about me. I think she is very lucky to have you guys as parents invested in helping her make better choices but also to feel better about herself as a whole person, try to help her be that confident and carefree kid again, that you both are giving clear signals about food, and relating it to overall health.
  5. I don’t have a huge family, but I’m really curious about if fresh vegetables or frozen vegetables are more sustainable? I only have one, and when she hits a growth spurt the pantry is torn through. I can’t imagine trying to keep 5+ fed this way which is why I’m curious about the fresh vs. frozen. I was trying to move on because this topic is not directly related to me, but I can’t put it to rest in my mind until I can get answers based on your experiences. That is if you all don’t mind sharing.

    Don't over think this.

This is the whole truth. My fiancé might get Cheetos and a Dr. Pepper to make it through if anything at all. 8-12 hours with nothing to eat? I couldn’t do it. That’s why the people who do in order to keep the rest of us alive are truly a blessing. We are trying to think of Whole 30 compliant emergency foods that she can grab instead. I think trying those beef “granola bar” looking things off the approved company list might be a good idea before we start. It is still strange to me having a meat “granola bar” shaped emergency beef pack. I hope someone knows what I’m talking about.
  7. Pasteles are one of the delicacies found in Puerto Rican homes. It is traditional food that is a treasure in a Puerto Rican food desert that is Oklahoma. I get them from my dad for Christmas. A pastele is basically a protein, some olives, and a few other ingredients that are stuffed inside a mix of plantains and yautìa, which is a corm or tuber type vegetable (?). There is also Adobo (seasoning) and sofrito (which I know is already compliant in of itself when it is homemade.) I also wonder if the seasoning Sazón is compliant. Thank you for your time.
  8. I’m looking at the Goya brand I have. It should be compliant since the tricalcium phosphate is okay because the other ingredients are salt, granulated garlic, black pepper, and turmeric, right?
  9. I also want to take a moment to let you both know how much I appreciate your help. I wish I would have utilized the forums the last time I did one.
  10. Was the non compliant ingredient tricalcium phosphate? I was actually about to check the forum for it since it is not on the pdf of additives. As far as the pork products go I think I’m going to go with a supported company from this site or talk to one of the local farmers. I didn’t realize how many people teach and then run a farm. I’m tired before the last bell rings. (Which is part of the reason I’m doing a whole 30.)

    Ji's Journey (W30 #1 - Jan 2019)

I think there is a pdf that covers eating out. If you plan ahead about going to a restaurant even if you don’t actually go eat while out, it will help alleviate some of that stress about leaving the house. I felt that stress pretty hard as well when I had to go out of town on my first whole 30.
  12. I don’t think the ones I have had are made with garbanzo beans and you are right more than 2 in a sitting is a bit much. The few other ingredients include mainly just the olives, sofrito, maybe some tomato sauce or paste, adobo (of which about 5 of the approved food sites had under the whole 30 approved section. Whew.), and sazon (still up in the air). There might be bell peppers of jalapeños peppers. Sorry I wasn’t more clear. I have to think a little hard because I have eaten plenty, but I have never made any. Making 100% compliant pasteles sounds like a fun adventure, but a big task. Pasteles are usually a family meal making affair because you make a bunch of them, put them in the freezer then boil them later. I’m a blasphemer because I eat mine with ketchup or hot sauce, but I like them with that. I’m also stoked about trying arroz coliflor sin gandules (cauliflower rice without the beans). We usually use ham as a replacement and it’s still good that way with the olives.

    Em's First Whole30! Start date = 1/14/18

I’m allergic to shell fish, but your description of the shrimp dinner sounded delicious. I’ll have to sub in chicken.

    Ji's Journey (W30 #1 - Jan 2019)

Your original post speaks to me on a personal level, because I am also bipolar, ADD, and highly allergic to grass which is actually relevant to most of the food allergies I have also. I love reading this log. I’ve done a whole 30 in the past, but I like reading through this log and Im glad your dad is on board with eating the new food you are cooking! I also like that your kid ate the turkey patty and liked it.
  15. I just wanted to add that ice cream is going to be hard, because that was the gateway food. Honestly ice cream has been a reward and comfort since I was being potty trained. I don’t know how much money my sister spent on Braums ice cream throughout that period, but obviously it worked. I almost want to cry over the ice cream, but I found dairy iswhat’s causing my medical bills to go up between 2 nasal sprays, 2 inhalers (one Breo and the other the emergency inhaler), Zyrtec, allergy shots, sinus wash and Omeprazole for the post nasal drip/acid reflux from heck if I don’t take them.
  16. It seems like a far future start date, but we are nearing the end of nursing school for my fiancé who is earning an LPN. As someone who has completed courses up to my masters I know better than to start anything like this smack dab in the middle of a final semester so we are waiting for her to finish. As for myself, I teach orchestra at 2 middles schools, play violin professionally, play in the percussion section of our community band, on occasion sing in church choir, and I am in the second semester of helping run a youth symphony in our community. I have hit my stride in my 5th year of teaching, and cut having to do masters degree work (since Im finished) and teaching privately on top of the other activities. My days really aren’t as difficult as they sound, unless I don’t get enough sleep. I’m excited, but also going to hate myself in the morning. I don’t know if it’s the added sugar in my coffee, my ADD, stress, my increased screen time, the fact that our first youth symphony rehearsal of the second semester is “technically” today, me excitedly tearing through all the resources I didn’t read the first time (big mistake, I Leroy Jenkins’ed my way into my first whole 30) or all of the above, but Im not sleepy. I am tired, but not sleepy. Side note: I am also slightly bitter about the being able to eat all potatoes thing because after my first whole 30 in 2014 eating only sweet potatoes, it is safe to say that I still hate sweet potatoes to this day. I’m glad I can eat other potatoes and I’m sure I’ll get over being bitter, but I also had to laugh a little and think to myself, “Well, at least I have more potato options now.” Anyway, I’m glad to be here and so is my fiancé. It’s been cool to go through this process together and talk through how we are going to spend the next 2 months in preparation for it. I am trying to mentally prepare myself for the food dreams. The one I had on my first one was about a garlic bread-soft pretzel hybrid slathered in that cheese sauce they served with pretzels on top of the melted cheese that can come on garlic bread. I know it probably wasn’t that bad but I can almost remember being in a hot tub of this bread that I’m not sure truly exists in reality, but it felt like the bread and cheese hot tub did happen. I’m not discounting it because I have this dream on occasion where Goku helps me stop the apocalypse. I’m also pretty sure that movie Hot Tub Time Machine was in theaters or still heavily into the previews. Thanks for reading all of this!
  17. I had this same problem 5 years ago on day 28. I don’t know if it was the fact that I was sick or the fact that I had 2 days left, but as soon as I saw the sugar content I pretty much cried hysterically because I didn’t know what to do, and at the time I couldn’t find a post that addressed it. It was bad. I’m glad it’s being addressed now.
  18. I did not think to do a search on over the counter medicines for colds? I knew I couldn't do my Airborne's any more because that's a supplement. Okay, cool. No problem. I teach public school. Strep and Bronchitis have been going around pretty bad. My throat is killing me. I took some Alka Seltzer. I only started checking on this because I started having weird cravings. I found out the cravings are normal. Okay good, but they put sugar in OTC COLD MEDICINE? I'm more or less mad that I potentially have to start over from day one because my throat is killing me and I'm on Day 20 and there is sugar in my Alka Seltzer... I ONLY have 10 more days. Seriously?
  19. I think I posted this in the wrong area, too... Today is not my day.
