  1. Hi everyone, My doctor recommended I follow a plan for 30 days that is very, very similar to the Whole 30. Technically it is not "officially" the W30, so I very much hope it's OK that I'm posting in here! I'm eating only Whole 30 approved foods, though carageenan and soy lecithin are not forbidden. I can't speak to my doctor about this until my next appointment which will not be for a while. If I'm out of bounds posting this, feel free to delete. I started the Whole 30-ish with bad acne. It's been chronic since I was 12. Finally figured out it was caused by food choices. After a week on the W30-ish my skin was not perfect, but it was so much better and I was acquiring a "glow." I was so excited! Fast forward: I'm in week four. The program ends this Saturday. I have not gone off plan ONCE. As of 5 days ago my skin has been reverting to it's old appearance. It's red, uneven, splotchy, and I'm having breakouts ALL OVER my face -- including my typically clear forehead. I've never experienced hormonal acne or stress acne. It's always been 100% food-caused. WHAT is going on?! I have college homecoming next weekend and was looking forward to wow-ing everyone with my skin. Now I'm scared I'll have to cake on the makeup just like I did in college. Any explanations for this strange turn of events? xoxo

    Acne cleared... now coming back

Carlaccini, I had some homemade pork sausages last week, but other than that, no pork products. Some bacon in the first two weeks (when my skin looked its best). lady shanny, I tried to do a whole 30 in February '15 but I stopped 10 days in because the stringency was too much for my anxiety. The day that I stopped my skin looked quite good - about as good as it looked 10 days into this Whole30-ish round before it started to go downhill again. I'm trying to drink water regularly, but I'm not supposed to have it with meals (low stomach acid), so I often forget. I'm probably getting about 16 oz+ a day.

    Acne cleared... now coming back

Quilter in VA, I'm not worried about the snacking. This is a thread about my skin. I have digestive issues that require me to eat very small meals every couple of hours. Thanks, lady shanny! I've been drinking 1 - 2 cups daily for the month. Love that stuff! Update: I'm breaking out more severely now. "Small" pimples have upgraded to large and noticeable. Stopped with the dried fruit. Eating more veggies and as much protein as my anti-protein stomach can handle. I'm at my wits end.

    Acne cleared... now coming back

Hmmm interesting! Well, I need to finish up my supply of nuts and dried fruit since I had purchased a bunch for snacks this week and I can't afford to buy new snacks yet, but once I've finished the supply then I will cut back! I've always heard that almonds are excellent for skin, so I'm a little confused, but hey - there's no one-size-fits-all I guess! Anyone know of a particular food that is notoriously good for skin? I might try a honey mask tonight....

    Acne cleared... now coming back

I was on my period last week, however like I mentioned, I've NEVER experienced hormonal acne before in my life. Why would it suddenly start now? Also, I've been off my cycle for days but my skin is still breaking out in little bumps and redness....

    Acne cleared... now coming back

Thanks for the replies! I should have mentioned: While I'm not forbidden from having carragreenan or soy, I'm avoiding it due to deeply rooted Whole 30 habits. Over the last month I've had a few mugs of tea that contained soy lecithin, that's it. I *have* been consuming a lot more dried fruit and nuts than I typically do. I would think that would have an influence, but I've been eating the same way all month. So why would I get better, THEN get worse? I'm not eating a lot of vegetables (esp. nightshades) or eggs because we're working on digestive issues. My produce is mostly fresh fruit, sometimes celery, cucumbers, or bell peppers. Carlaccini, I'm the same with seed oils! Also gluten and processed sugar. I break out like mad! Do you think it's some kind of detox? As for skin care, I've been using the same cleanser for months, along with the same moisturizer. Last week I started using argan oil as a nighttime moisturizer. I've stopped that to see if it might be causing problems. I don't know WHY it would; I used argan oil all winter... SO confused!
  7. This is my first Whole30. I'm on Day 2. The main reason I'm doing this is because I am sick and tired of sugar controlling my life. The second reason is because I have spent the last 26 years in a dysfunctional relationship with food. I want to stop this! Unfortunately, ever since I started (yesterday) I've been plagued by intense anxiety over whether I'm "doing it right." I don't know how to let this feeling go. I had two Larabars (compliant ingredients) and a pouch of almond butter last night because I was so hungry and irritable. This morning I had an enormous breakfast with plenty of fat, protein, veggies, and fruit, but I was starving an hour later and now I'm fantasizing about dates (the fruit ;-) ). Would it be OK to eat Larabars with a meal? (NOT as dessert) Just to give myself something to look forward to? I'm so scared that I'll mess it up and not kick the Sugar Dragon to the curb. On the flipside, I can't deal with this anxiety for another 28 days! It's almost like a bought of OCD! (real OCD - not the cutesy kind.) I also find that I'm rejecting compliant foods that I enjoy because I'm afraid that comfort/happiness = food addiction/emotional eating. Please help! :-(
  8. Turns out that I've been eating soybean oil all along. It's in both my onion salt and garlic salt. I have used both spices every day. I want to cry. It didn't even occur to me to read the labels because it's not a spice BLEND!!!!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I'm on day 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And still, after all this work, I feel NO different. I've posted and posted on here, getting feedback and tweaking and fixing and obsessing over whether I'm doing this right and still nothing. If I have to start over then I'm just going to give up.

Tell me I don't need to start over

Hi everyone, Thank you all for your advice, responses, and support! After a lot of thought and discussion with a supportive friend then I've decided to stop attempting to do the Whol30. It's not because I think it's unhealthy or even impossible. It's because for me it triggers a lot of toxic thinking, anxiety, and fear. At this point in my life journey I really can't handle that kind of stress and legalistic thinking. I had a Coke Zero (my favorite!) for the first time in two weeks and it was heaven. SO worth it. :-) But I'm going to try to continue to eat Whole30 meals (protein, fat, veggies), while allowing dairy and the occasional added sugar. I'm also not going to worry about eating fruit. I'm STILL going to eliminate grains, legumes, and "chronic" sugar consumption. But this girl ain't gonna freak out if there's sugar in her BBQ sauce. :-) And I'm going to have a glass of wine after a long week. And I'm going to make chocolate-avocado ice cream pops to eat while I binge-watch Friends. One day I'm going to do the Whole30. Maybe even a Whole45. And I'm going to be calm and happy and not weigh myself. And I'm NOT going to eat soybean oil. But for now, this is where I am. Best of luck to ALL OF YOU on your Whole30 journeys!!! Thank you all for the short-lived but still wonderful time! ~ Sevensundrops

Tell me I don't need to start over

I know, I am very much all-or-nothing which I guess is not healthy to begin with but it's so hard to not have that approach when the SMALLEST slip up will ruin the Whole30. I just really can't afford another 10 days of this. I saved up for this Whole30 and I just feel horrible that I sabotaged the whole thing. And it's been unbelievably hard to have this diet in my life. I'm not sure if I want to give up because it actually is hard or if I just am lazy and want to eat crappy food to make me feel better. :-(
  11. OK so I've been posting questions like a madwoman so I hope everyone's not sick of seeing my name. Anyway, I dipped my toes into Whole30 condiments by making compliant mayo and ordering a couple of products from Tessemae's. I hated all of the above. I'm really frustrated and want to make something fun and interesting. I've always adored BBQ sauce and I'd like to make some to go with my compliant chicken nuggets. I finally found a recipe that doesn't call for date paste, rather the sweetener is fresh orange juice. I'm scared to death of feeding my raving sugar addiction. (We're talking serious, here). Do you think this will be a problem? Thank you all for helping me out. :-)

Fruit juice as sweetener = feeding the sugar dragon?

Haha thanks! I think I'm probably driving myself insane. :-P Not the goal of the Whole30, I'm sure... It was a whole cup, though! I hope that's OK! Btw I ate foods (multiple times) that contained chicory root... I thought that was a nut (maybe I'm stupid I don't know) and ate it!! I just found out it's a sweetener!! Do I need to start over? I think I'll have a heart attack if I have to start over. :-(

Fruit juice as sweetener = feeding the sugar dragon?

I like BBQ sauce for the taste! I ended up making one with applesauce. For some reason psychologically that didn't strike me as sweetening with fruit. Probably because it added texture so it was clearly an ingredient and not a sweetener. It was SOOO good! It definitely didn't taste just like the bottled stuff, but it was delicious on its own! It was very very spicy too which helped quell the feeling that I was eating something with sugar. In fact, I couldn't stop tasting it! I'm worried though - do y'all think that was because I was looking for a sugar hit, however small? I'm kind of getting into this paranoid puritan mindset now where I can't eat anything that tastes good or comforting or "normal" because I'm afraid of creating an unhealthy response. Is anyone else getting this?!

Fruit juice as sweetener = feeding the sugar dragon?

I don't think I'm masking a sugar craving by sneaking orange juice into BBQ sauce. But after some discussion on another thread at the start of my W30 (this is day 7) then I decided that I would not consume any sugar at all, even in fresh fruit. I'm afraid that this is really just my cravings... But I do LOVE BBQ sauce... Agh this is so hard. :-(

    Starch veggie ratio

I'm looking for the answer to this question, too! Does anyone what what the ratio is meant to be? For example, should it be 1-2 cups of fresh veggies BESIDES the starch? Or do baked sweet potato "chips" count towards the vegetable quota?
  16. Hey all! I'm doing my first Whole30 ever. I spent months prepping and priming myself to do something that scared me half out of my wits. (I have a legit sugar addiction and a lesser but still potent comfort/junk food addiction). I finally started on Wednesday, the 4th, so this is my fifth day. I keep waiting for something to change - my body, my mood, my energy... NOTHING is happening. It's like I've not even changed anything except that I want sugar and junk food. But even that is perfectly normal! I crave things just as much as I did before, not more, not less. I've read avidly about the Whole30 "timeline" and others' experiences and none of it is happening for me! The only thing is that I feel depressed, listless, and outrageously anxious about food choices. Last night I had a nightmare that I gave up on the Whole30. (Not a "food dream", either) I woke up practically in tears. What am I doing wrong?!?! I'm so afraid that I'll somehow push myself through these next 23 days, only to find at the end that nothing's improved. My skin, which suffers from chronic acne, has cleared up SLIGHTLY, but it's barely noticeable. But when I was eating crap all the time but not eating gluten or white sugar then my skin was just as clear as it is now! I feel like I'm stressing and putting all this work in for nothing. Any help??

    Working hard, no results

No, I tend to just sit and eat. I have eaten breakfast at work a few times and also dinner in front of a movie, but even when I didn't do anything then it just took me ages! I'm not used to eating so much in one sitting. Also, I tend to feel sick if I eat "real food" quickly - which is odd since pre-Whole30 I could inhale McD's french fries in no time at all!

    Working hard, no results

Thanks! Something I'm wondering, though: Is it normal to take 1+ hours to finish a meal? It takes me SO long to get through eating these massive meals, especially when I try to eat more mindfully instead of scarfing it all down during a 25 minute show. I can last 4+ hours after eating, but it takes me so long to get through a meal that I find my lunches and dinners being pushed later and later.

@MissMary, Will that cause me to gain weight? I'm hoping to lose 10+ lbs... So if I'm understanding you correctly, I must meet the minimum amounts given in the template, but I am permitted to eat more than the minimum for any or all aspects?

    Working hard, no results

All good advice! Thank you! Is there such a thing as "too much" fat with my meals? I'm concerned that I'm consuming an imbalance of the three parts of the template. I like to add a fat like olives or guacamole, but there's also olive oil on my salads and ghee/coconut oil in the things I've cooked. Is it OK if I go over 1 - 2 portions of fat but I'm still eating the minimum in protein and vegetables?

Ooh, also, not sure if this is relevant, but I don't exercise at all! I get really, really, really obsessive about it. Kind of a perfectionist/all-or-nothing person with a very unhealthy body image, so this is all super touchy... :-/

    Working hard, no results

Goodness! Eat more?! I honestly thought I was eating enough according to the template - maybe even too much! I seriously amped up my servings after the advice from the other thread... It already takes me like an hour to scarf this all down... I'm not sure how to get in more food! Also, I'm gaining weight... :-/ I'll definitely try to get to bed earlier, though.

Thank you, everyone! In retrospect I supposed I seem a little silly. Too early to freak out, I guess! :-P Here's a sample schedule (Sorry, I don't remember everything so I'm kinda guesstimating) Woke up at 5:45, hit the alarming umpteen times, got up at 6:25. Started eating breakfast at 7:15, finished at 8:30. Two eggs, a handful of fried prosciutto (so that it's similar to bacon but it's compliant - also it's really good dipped in sunny-side-up eggs!), red, orange, and yellow peppers, some mixed greens with olive oil and salt and pepper, iced coffee with full-fat coconut milk, and fruit-infused water. Lunch at 2:00, finished around 3:00 Two potato cakes (white potatoes, egg, almond flour, spices), BIG bowl of mixed greens with olive oil and herbs, steamed asparagus, three spicy tuna cakes, lemon water. Hot mug of Bengal Spice tea around 4:00 Dinner at 7:00, finished around 8:00 Bowl of stew (broth, beef, peppers, onions, carrots, potatoes, compliant Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper), big bowl of mixed greens with the usual toppings, steamed asparagus, handful of green olives, fruit-infused water Bedtime at 10:45. I only listed the water that I have with meals, but I'm chuggin' all day long. I always add the juice of a whole lemon to a 16 oz. bottle of water, and I love it, so water consumption is never a problem for me.

    Help! Sugar Dragon and SWYPO

@kirkor Hahaha! That's why I need to use a measuring spoon. Otherwise it might be a generous spoonful... ;-) @jent103 Thank you! You know, that's a good idea: Mixing fruit with another food (especially a starch). That way I get the nutrition and interest but the sugary taste will be muted so I won't be feeding The Dragon. :-)

    Help! Sugar Dragon and SWYPO

Fresh fruit is definitely not a FWB for me. I find that I really can't eat more than a handful of berries or one larger fruit like a plum or peach. I think it's good that I'm deciding beforehand that I'm eating a fruit with my meal. That, to me, says that it's a rational, planned decision instead of caving into a sugar craving. Whereas with dates or dried apricots it would be a FWB. I think I'm getting the hang of this!! It's only Day 3, but I'm not experiencing any SERIOUS negative side effects like "The Hangover" or whatever they call it in the Whole 30 Timeline. I'm pretty pumped to keep on making good choices!!! Thanks, all!!
