QuilterInVA got a reaction from misslindy in Tigers and Turtles - 2016
Today was the first time I've received notification of a post in a month! I should have checked sooner.
I've been reading "Food Freedom Forever" and it's like Melissa was talking to me personally. If you haven't read it, its worth your time. If some of you are reading it, maybe we could discuss it. I have been doing pretty well. Kelly over at The Nourishing Home (Paleo website - she sends out email with dinner menus every week) started a Whole30 yesterday so I joined. She has a month of menus and recipes for the Whole 30. I plan to read the book then go back and make notes and highlight during this time so I'll be prepared for the "eating season."

Good morning, ladies! Off and running on the W30 Challenge. In looking in the freezer to see what I needed I found Chocolate Chili and Cauliflower Soup so I'll use those this week along with some Kalua Pork that was lurking there.
Like many of you, I just don't have brakes for some foods and it's all downhill after the first bite. Then there is no use not eating everything in sight until next Monday because you can only start a W30 on Monday (LOL). I think this first week is going to be pretty hard for I have really strayed.
I had to redo my gym schedule because they changed the time on my Yoga class and added a new Silver Sneakers that will fit my schedule better.  I was thinking about going for a walk this afternoon but the walking trail will be a mess since Hermiane came on the weekend. My flower sure loved the rain after 4 weeks of not one drop.
    Have a wonderful day.

Good morning, ladies! Hot and humid in VA. We have had no rain for 3 weeks. The trees are starting to loose their leaves.
Being the "Granny" of the group at 75, I can tell you it does get easier to make wise food choices but the Sugar Dragon is always just around the corner waiting to bounce. In 1971 I weighed 356 pounds. Slowly I got down to 140  by eating a lower carb diet. Over the years I've gained as much as 25 pounds and then lost it again.  For the last 20 I've managed to stop at a 5 pound gain and get back under control. What sets me off on a binge is denying myself the salty treats I love. Sweets not so much. I'm much better off if I can plan to have some chips once a week. My grocery store has 1/2 oz. bags of corn or potato chips for $.30 and if I  decide to have them, I can get through another week. The problem is that sometimes I feel like my week has not been good foodwise so no chips are allowed. Next thing I know I've the big bag half gone. I also find I get into a rut sometimes and have the same thing over and over. I need to try new recipes or new foods but sometimes it seems too much for just one person.
I'm hoping Melissa's new book that comes out October 4 will help me set up a better plan for the rest of my life. I've also signed on for the special W30 Challenge that starts September 5. There will be extras for those who have signed up, including tips on setting the plan up for the rest of your life; there are recipes for Labor Day so we get off to a good start; and there will be tips for reintroduction. We'll all be doing the 10 day version. It's times so the book comes out at the end of the 30 days, then we have 10 days to read the book and make a plan while doing reintroduction. Anyway, I'm giving it a shot.
Melissa also has a new W30 cookbook coming out December 6. I just pre-ordered it on Amazon.
    Have a wonderful day!

Good morning, ladies! Another hot (95 degrees) and humid day in VA. We need rain!
Having an off-road month and it isn't good. I'm sure you have all heard about the big W30 starting September 5 and leading up to the publication of Melissa's new book.  There are going to be some extras for those who sign up on Facebook.  The book will be delivered October 4 and the W30 will be over October 5 and then she'll give us hints for the slow reintroduction and that will give us 10 days to read and digest the book and come up with out daily plan. It sounds like what I need at this point. Since I live alone you would think I'd not have a problem with junk creeping into the house but it happens. I'm just not good with having one serving of ice cream or chips. I end up eating the whole thing at once and buying single servings seems so wasteful of money. A small bag of chips is $1.59 and the store brand for a 10 ounce bag is $1.49. I'm a mess.
I'm spending the next 10 days making out menus and cooking some recipes ahead and freezing them. I'll also grill up a bunch of chicken breasts and thighs and cook up some ground beef and make single servings packets for the freezer.  Where I run into problems is with dinner. I have it planned, I want it, but I'm too tired to cook it. COPD brings fatigue with it. Some days I'm fine and some not.
I upped my exercise at the Y and it seems I have more energy. Those endorphins are great mood boasters, too. I am now doing water aerobics and yoga M-W-F and T-TH I do strength training and SilverSneakers (circuit training for seniors). Once a year we have to go around with a trainer and be accessed on the machines so our levels can be adjusted. The girl who did mine started out  "Well, you're 75 so lets go to the other room and see how you do." That room has machines for beginners. I passed it a long time ago. I told her I wanted to regular weight room and then she actually looked at me and saw I had a lot of muscle definition. Then she let me show her how much I could do and was pretty surprised. She added some different machines and weights to my workout so I'm glad for that.
    Have a wonderful day!

I'm sorry! I didn't realize I hadn't posted n so long. Its so hot and humid that I go to the gym in the morning then come home and think about what I should be doing while sitting and doing nothing. With my COPD this weather makes is so hard for me to breath outside. A young couple live next door to me and he came over and offered to water my stuff after they saw me so short of breath trying to do it. I have lovely neighbors.

I lost 8 pounds since June. Weighed this morning since it was the end of another 30 days. I'm taking August for reintros and then I'll go back to a full W30 September 1. I'm hoping the new book will help me get a handle on this for the long haul. I know grains are out due to celiac and sugar/sweeteners make me bloated so they are also out. I don't want to back into the snacking I did before.

Weight Watchers called me and offered a receptionist position for 4 meetings a week. I used to be a leader. I still weigh in once a month to keep my lifetime status which I have had for 40 years. Even though I'm not doing Smart Points, I know the program well (and all the other ones back to the first one) so I decided to take it. They pay good and I'd like to get my car paid off as fast as I can. I hate having any debt at my age.

The Y is having an ActivTrax challenge that ends Labor Day. ActivTrax generates workouts based on what you have done and encourages you to do more. The 3 who earn the most points get really nice prizes. I know I won't do a prize, but it still motivates me to do better in my age group. When I went to get re-evaluated earlier this month, the trainer looked at my arms and said "Wow, you have guns!" I've been lifting heavy for several years so I'd be surprised if I didn't have a little muscle. Getting older doesn't mean you have to fall apart.

Cynthia, I sympathize with you dealing with the heat in Texas. We've been in this high 90s with a heat index between 105 and 110 for weeks. We need rain. I just don't want any hurricanes! I don't know how you work so many hours.

Crimsann, oh no! Not more car problems!

Glad to have you with us!

MissLindy, it's Instant Pot that you would be looking for. Hands down it is the best out there. It's a steamer, a slow cooker, a rice cooker, a pressure cooker, a yogurt maker, porridge (oatmeal) setting and you also have a saute function so you can brown meat, saute veggies a bit, and stuff like that before you pressure cook. There is a huge Instant Pot community on Facebook with all kinds of recipes and helpful support. We get people who have other brands  that are looking for answers. I got mine from Amazon Warehouse deals and saved about $40 because the box had a crumpled corner. I used to make the Kahula Pork in the crockpot and it took 16 hours and in the Instant Pot it takes 90 minutes. I made potato salad by dicing the potatoes and then putting eggs in their shell on top of the potatoes. Once it came up to pressure, I cooked 4 minutes. Those eggs literally fall out of their shell and after the eggs and potatoes cooled a little I added the rest of my ingredients. Yum! If you are only looking at it to make yogurt, I'd just get a yogurt maker.

With the hot weather, I've been eating a lot of salads. I make chicken, egg, tuna, and salmon salads, chop up onions, celery, peppers, radishes, carrots and then I'm ready to make a quick salad in a hurry.

I love yoga and yesterday I was finally able to do Crane which means standing on one leg, raising the other behind you and grabbing it with your hand and hinging at the hips.

I'm quilting with friends today. I'm taking my lunch for they want to send out for Chinese. We always have so much fun.

Good morning, ladies! Another hot and humid day in store for my corner of the world.

I'm having a struggle but so far have kept to the W30. I don't have much appetite when its hot so its hard for me to get all the food in when I should, and then I feel the need for a small snack in the afternoon.

MissLindy, I LOL at you and the bike. That sounds like something I'd do. The water is still a little cool, but I'm in the water everyday now. I love the water! I have a 2-hour yoga class this afternoon and then I'll swim.

I'm going to spiralize some zucchini, yellow squash, and cucumber then add some onion and celery and make a balsamic vinegrette today. I'll have it with a chicken breast.

    Have a great day!

It's amazing how easy it is to slip back into the W30 groove again. Yesterday was a good day and I wasn't needing snacks at all. I'm very fair skinned so can't take the sun, have allergies to grass, mold, trees, and weeds so I don't go outside much. I have a stroller for my cat and take him for a walk several daus a week.

I probably lost a pound of hair. Because I'm in the pool at the Y or here in our development every day, I keep it very short in the summer. It's not quite 3/4 inch long on top.  My husband loved long hair and after he passed away, I went and got it cut very short and I haven't turned back yet. I love the freedom.

Water aerobics today and then I'm off to meet my quilting bee. We are making pillowcase dresses today to send to Africa.

We've had so much rain, and more on tap until next Monday, that all the plants are turning yellow from too much water and all the weeds are flourishing.

    Have a wonderful day.

Off to a good start. Sweet potato hash and steamed spinach with ghee for br4eakfast.

Crimsann, the FDA just passed a law requiring added sugar be a separate line item on the nutritional label.  I don't remember when that goes into effect but I bet we'll be amazed at how much is in some things - like 12 teaspoons in a regular 12 oz. coke.

I'm off to the Y for a 2-hour yoga class and then I'm getting my summar short and spiky haircut.

Good morning, ladies! Another rainy day in VA.

Nancy, I'm sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself during this time.

Crimsann, been there on the debit card fraud. The fool used the card at Bed, Bath & Beyond and then a month later returned the stuff, probably thinking they'd get cash, but I got a credit for the stuff. I called the bank and told them because they had already given my money back. There was a lecture by the York County Sheriff's office at the Y yesterday on identity theft. Deputy Russell said every one should have a crosscut shredder, not a strip shredder, and every piece of paper should go through it before going out of the house. Even junk mail and especially credit card offers. He also said if you have a mailbox at the road and put up the flag to signal there's mail to be picked up, this is an invitation to theives. We should alsio ask what is going to be done with out information. For example, if you have already given all your information to the doctor's office and the next time you go in they ask for it again, ask why since they already have it. How are they going to store it? Dishonest people can be anywhere, unfortunately. I'd love to have your meal plans, too.

Bpaistel, they made me the same offer but I had to also send my banking information. The sad thing is, someone will do it. I've also had phone calls that say I've won a cruise and all I have to do is pay the tax by wiring a couple of hundred dollars.

Merg, I love fish, too. I go down to the fish market and get it fresh caught that morning. Nothing better.

Cynthia, I have to admit I sometimes make a smoothie before going to the gym. I use a scoop of protein powder, 1/2 cup of frozen berries, a big handful of spinach or kale, a big spoon ful of sunflower nut butter and 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk. It sees me through 1-1/2 hours of yoga and 1 hour of water aerobics.

Miss Lindy, I'm beginning to dispair of getting into the bay or ocean this year. It has been so cold this spring. I don't know how you can get in the icy water.

    Have a wonderful day.

Good morning, ladies! I have a terrible head cold that doesn't want to go away. There's nothing like having allergies and a cold at the same time. Needless to say, I don't feel like eating much of anything so I've been surviving on chicken broth and orange juice. Last night I added a chopped salad - I was actually craving salad! I think being off track has made my immune system even worse. The fact that it has rained for over a week hasn't helped my depression. I am so looking forward to feeling better and getting back on my W30 strictly.

Good morning, ladies! The sun is finally with us today and we're expecting to reach 68. We have had 9 days of rain amounting to 2 inches in that time and temps in the low 50s. Normally by now its in the high 70s. I'm still wearing long yoga pants and long sleeved shirts. I hate when we have rainy days for it makes my depression worse, and my RA, and I just want to hibernate. I did make to to the gym for yoga and water aerobics every day and strength training 3 days.

Nancy, I pre-ordered the book a few days ago. If some of us get it, maybe we can discuss it as we read it. Have a fun day today.

MissLindy, I live on tidal wetlands that go into the Chesapeake Bay. Water is really high now with all the rain. I'm suirrounded by water - Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic Ocean, James River, York River, Back River - and I love going to the beach but I won't swim in any of them. I like a pool. We have one in my development that will be opening for the season at the end of the month. If it ever gets warm, I'll swim there and the Y.

MissLindy, it takes about 30 minutes to set up Dragon. You read paragraphs so it can learn your voice and how you pronounce words. If you purchase it for your computer, you can download a free app for your tablet or phone. My ex-boss is a Type A personality, knows nothing about computers and doesn't want to, and he got it done so I know you can. They have excellent support and it won't be long before you can use it.

Had a lovely day with my friends yesterday and lunch at Ruby Tuesday. I got a burger without the bun mashed cauliflower. They put a big pile of the buger toppings on the plate (lettuce, tomato slices, onion) so I squeezed some lemon on it and called it a tiny salad.

Cynthia, I think we've all been struggling a little but we just keep going on. It is good to have you back.

MissLindy, it seems we have all fallen into the turtle phase of our journey but are all getting ourselves back on track and will soon be tigers once again. I don't envy you in the cold water. The Y keeps the pool at 84 degrees and that is cold enough for me!

Bpaitsel, I just got some chickpea flour and a cookbook. Its relatively inexpensive (I got 4 pound bag at the Indian grocery store for $4.49) and so far I've liked what I've made (pancakes, cheesy biscuits, and thickened gravy). I read about it in "Always Hungry" so thought I'd try it. It's not compliant with W30, but I'm off roading now.

Crimsann, if you had Dragon Naturally Speaking on your phone or computer, you could dictate a post. My boss was a terrible typist and he had me put it on his computer years ago when it first came out. It's amazing. The funny thing was if he forgot to turn it off and took a phone call or talked to someone in his office, it would keep right on typing. It also spelled better than he could.

Nancy W, how was your weekend with your daughters?

Good morning, ladies! A lovely spring day in the 70s for today.

If you can make the time, there is a great interview (about 40 minutes) with Melissa Hartwig at www.blog.primalblueprint.com Episode #111. There was a lot of info on how they carry on after their W30 is over (she says they are going to have an emphasis on that this year) and it really opened my eyes. Perhaps we are being too strict with ourselves.

Nancy - its wonderful you are getting back to the gym. You'll feel better for it, too. I watched the interview on my Kindle so maybe you could do that while on the treadmill.

Crismann - being 74 my bikini days are over but I like a tankini with a shorts bottom. I get my workout swim suits from H2O. I need them to be chlorine resistant. I wish I could stop at one cookie. Having to be gluten-free has limited my sweets consumption a lot. That is good.

Misslindy. Talking about skewed body image, I lost 214 pounds nearly 40 years ago and I still see my fat self in the mirror. I have to try clothes on before I buy them because they all look too small to me so I buy larger sizes. I'm always amazed when I see a picture of myself.

Nancy, with the new WW plan that came out in December, I'm sure you can do this. Protein has few points, example 3 oz chicken breast is now 2 SmartPoints and it was 3 before, carbs have higher points (an extreme example is pecan pie which is 26 SmartPoints), and fruits and vegetables have no points so *I think that will leave plenty for fat. The lowest daily SmartPoints is 30 and the Weekly Points now depend on weight, age, and activity level. I'm a lifetime member so don't have to pay as long as I'm within 2 pounds of my goal weight so whenever the plan changes I go to a few meetings just to get the materials and see what it is all about. The Smart Points formula is based on calories and saturated fat and carbs. The Whole30 will work just fine for you when combined with WW. Just keep posting here. You inspire us because you keep on trying.
