Any updates from the women over 50? All is well here - it's been some months since I finished W30 but I continue to eat according to the template.... unless someone else is cooking for me and then I'm willing to gratefully partake. There is usually a price to pay but it's not so much, for me.
I woke up this morning with such a beautiful feeling of having been so deeply asleep that I had to come back to myself - that I just had to tell somebody about it. Life is good. Cheers, y'all.

Although I'm technically 47, I am chemically menopausal  due to hormone therapy related to breast cancer. My weight jumped up 10-15 pounds from the baseline I'd maintained for almost 20 years after treatment. I didn't eat very much and couldn't understand why the weight wouldn't budge. I just completed my 30 days and lost 7.6# and nearly 7". I ate so much more, quantity and frequency, on the program and the weight fell off. I'm so inspired I'm going to continue many of the habits I learned going forward. What was especially rewarding for me was that most of the weight came off my belly, torso, and arms - the places that it had taken hold after menopause.

Day 31 today - cannot believe this program!  I have struggled with my weight for years, my emotional eating, my secret eating/grazing, years of little to no sleep and terrible fatigue which has held me back for so long.  Then there were the swollen ankles and fingers. I thought at 55, this was what life was going to be for me.
On the program I lost 13 pounds, and even though that's a huge accomplishment in itself - what is even better is how I feel, it is truly amazing!!  It's like my head has come out of the fog - I am so focused now that work is no longer a chore and.  Even talking to my sister in Australia, she commented on how well, and clear, and happy I sounded on the phone.
One great support tool was Real Plans - putting together meal plans, adding in some of my own recipes, modifying others etc. really made a difference.  It meant there was always the right kind of food in the fridge/pantry and quite honestly it saved me money because I was buying the right amount at the store.  It was worth the money to sign up.  I learned a lot about food - especially added sugar.  I didn't realize how insidious sugar is in our lives - even chicken stock has it!  I also bought a pressure cooker and make my own stock - it saves me money and have better stock than I could buy at the supermarket.  My husband followed the food with me, but was unlikely to give up milk and sugar in his coffee and a beer at night :-)
It does take some discipline (the first two weeks at the supermarket, I felt like I was running the gauntlet to get past some areas!), and planning took some time, but I am oh so glad I did this.  I want to keep it going and just accept that there will be times when I have to eat foods that don't fit the program.  Still struggling with sleep, hoping that will work out over time if I keep going.
I am so grateful, thank you Melissa and the Whole30 team

    A broken picker.
I take full responsibility for all of the yellow-bellied lily livered sapsuckers in my life.
The ones who left me stranded by the side of the road. The ones who traded me in for a golf ball or a fishing fly. The ones who worked out in the evenings and then really worked out after the gym closed. Running all over town.
The ones who liked my friends and relatives better than me.
The ones who did all kinds of things.

They were all a reflection of me.  I picked them but I didn't know I had a broken picker.  I was too busy distracting myself with food rewards to understand.

Confusion = Stop thinking for yourself.
Just allow other opinions to become your own. That brings on more anger, resentment and being highly reactive vs. reflective.
Confusion. Take full responsibility for it. It is a choice not to invest the emotional effort that you need to exert.
You will find yourself even more confused and Sneaky Snake will pounce on you every change he gets. That lily-livered yellow-bellied sapsucker is not going to cut you any slack. You might as well get used to it.
Stand UP on your own two feet and take full responsibility for everything.
It's time to start thinking for yourself.
Have you ever created your own positive food management plan?
Do you know how liberating it really is to break free of the constraints of someone's think so's.
    Shawshank it. For real.
Do you know how much fun it is and it's all fun, really...
To actually figure out what you want to eat on any given day without constant guilt and anxiety is massive freedom.
Have you ever sat down with yourself and said, for crying outloud, I don't have to listen to anyone tell me what to do. Shoo fly. Shoo.
You learn how you feel about yourself and remember that 'fat' is not a feeling.  I feel 'fat' today. Ooooo, shut the hail UP already.
Fix your hair and makeup.  Or don't.
    Stop editing yourself.
    Follow your own arrow.
Find that exit ramp out of the land of self-loathing. Lift someone else's spirits.
There's always another streetcar coming around the corner and when you actually invest the time and energy into someone else, giving them a hand UP instead of always smacking them upside the head with some negative words, you'll be amazed at how good it makes you feel.
Dance to the music and actually follow through with your promises to yourself and others.  Be consistent.
Make your bed. You're the one who has to lie in it.
Find living, breathing people and interact with them. You can allow others to be in the spotlight and on center stage. It doesn't mean that you're not thinking for yourself.
Let your folkaronies decide where they want to eat or shop. Offer your seat to an elder or a pregnant woman. Be sweet and kind. Do it if you have the chance.
It doesn't mean you're not thinking for yourself to step aside and give to others.
Much Love. Felicias.  Tanto Amore.  Italy. I can hardly wait for my package.

It's time to reflect on our independence. Food Freedom Forever.
Amidst the rodeos, picnics, parades, fireworks - let us take a few moments to reflect on what we are really celebrating.
As the founders of this program outlined the foundation and vision, let us declare our independence.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Felicias are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain rights.
Among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happy Awareness.
We the Felicias are completely responsible for our choices and consequences...and the powers we grant to them.
    We the Felicias.
    Much Love. Felicias.  Much Love.

    Stifle yourself, Edith.

    Grandpaw lurved Archie and Edith.
I went to church today with Maw. She wanted me to stifle myself but I didn't. Everyone was invited to get UP and speak about our favorite words. I was first out of the chute.  I know Maw was covering her eyes but you have to strike while the griddle is hot. Don't shout me down while I'm preachin' good...(taken from the TV).
We haven't been able to go anywhere together in almost two years. Freedom. Shawshanking it.
We both agree that we don't regret one single minute of not having that freedom. She'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. She's demure and quite a lady. It's not bragging if it's true, Maw is a beautiful woman.  Everyone tells me so and she has a spirit to match. I've caught some of the gentlemen giving her the eyeball.  Paw would be hot about that.
Moi? I enjoy blathering and foaming at the mouth, a virtual fountain of information that I cannot stifle...only around Maw. Then I have to mind my P's and Q's.  I'll always be the kid and she'll always be the Maw. Those roles are never going to change and I've decided to just roll with it.
I went to the podium and let it rip without editing myself. Don't edit yourself. Your first impression is correct. When you try to impress others it will fall flatter than a flounder.
For some reason, I'm not fond of fiction. Imaginary stories don't do anything for me.  I'd rather hear the real deal.  The truth.
Momentum is a gift. The gift of faith is really important to me. It's more important than just about everything else. I don't talk about it but it's the wind beneath my foaming and blathering...milling around, shooting the breeze with the Universe.
Your church is your biz. This is a judgment free zone. No value judgments placed on food or where you go for your peace and solace.
    Stifle yourself, Edith.  NOT.

Good one! She was on a very strong antibiotic for 7 days and it seemed to strip her gut health. Today, she's running around and feeling pretty good.

I added that extra strength 10 strains probiotic back in. It seems to be working.

Dogs are good therapy. I went to the Vet today for some dog bones. I didn't know there were two registered therapy dogs there. One named Angel, stood by legs and the Vet said that she wanted me to sit down. She's a big golden retriever. She threw her large paws around my neck and laid her head on my shoulder.  I hugged her really tight and told her she was the most wonderful dog in the entire world. She didn't let me go.  Now that was some real therapy. When she was finished, she jumped back down and laid on her big air pillow. Therapy dogs are shock absorbers. They can only absorb so much and they need to be tended to so they don't deplete their own batteries.
It was the best part of this day.  Dogs really are a human's best friend.

Maw made it through her heart surgery. It is another Christmas miracle.
    She is recovering.
I asked for a miracle and we have it.
I was only inches from a clean getaway, ready to pull out of my driveway to pick her up. It was snowing to the beat the band and it really hasn't stopped snowing.
I receive the call, an ambulance is on the way to Maw's house and it was very, very serious. They arrive, stabilize and haul her to the hospital. The decision is made to take her by ambulance to the bigger hospital.
Had I been on the road with Maw, all by myself in the middle of a snowstorm....the Universe had bigger and far better plans.  She arrived their safely and I drove slowly behind in the truck.  The visibility was low.
They stabilized her through the night and her surgery was early in the morning.  I didn't sleep a wink and she didn't either.  Everyone else was at home waiting by the phone.
There are angels of mercy in a good hospital. They are everywhere you look.  At the desks, manning the floors and attending to patients. They work tirelessly, giving their all.  Night-shifters.  Angels of Mercy. UP-lifters.
They may even come up from behind and give you a pat on the back.  Say sweeter and kinder things.  Many have a great sense of humor, for without it, it would be hard to cope on a daily basis.
My grandpaw always said we should be kind to strangers for in doing so you never know when you've just entertained an angel.  It works the other way around, too.
I went down to the gift store and picked out an angel gift for Maw. It's beautiful and a reminder that prayers work and the Universe has a better solution when multi-crap is hitting the fan.
We have all lived to see another day and I'm grateful and thankful for that.  We are bent on survival.
We are all in this thing called life together and it ain't easy. Keep your sense of humor. If you don't have one, you need to start working on that muscle memory. It's still there, you've let it slip.
I am deeply humbled by the angels of mercy who give it their all when they're so tired and worn out. Until they're better paid as Paw always says.  One day, they'll get their wings, too.

    What is this.
This is a narrow focus. Day to day and moment to moment.
    Tiny steps for tiny feet.
If you try to get from Point A to Point B by focusing on the giant month hunks of time it will take to get there, you'll become stressed, overwhelmed, busted and disgusted.
    If Then Planning.
It's going to take longer than 30 days for major changes in your brain and thinking.
If you're too focused on what others think about you and you give too many hoots, you won't get there. You'll sabotage yourself.
Constantly editing yourself is the mind's way of interrupting your inner voice. Your spirit. Your chances for making big changes that will actually stick with you for the rest of your life.
Stop editing. Stop giving too much credence to what you think others are looking at or thinking about you. That's actually being waaaay too self-centered. Me. Me. Me.
Inspire yourself.  Take full responsibility for yourself without rationalization.
They used to say that your brain stopped growing at the age of 25.  Well, guess what.  It never stops growing and learning. You are never ever too old to learn new tricks and neither is your dog. That's a bunch of hooey and more limitation.
There's no such thing as the Finish Line. Not for you or your brain or your desire to really make lasting changes for the big WIN.

    Me. Me. Me. Me......

Blackcurrant extracts are shown to reduce risk factors for metabolic conditions such as type 1 and 2 diabetes.
People take blackcurrant to help their:
blood flow immune system eye health gut health kidney health
Blackcurrant leaves also have a range of properties, including:
antimicrobial anti-inflammatory antiviral antitoxic antiseptic anticancer
Blackcurrant enhances the immune response. In people who exercised regularly, they could also train harder for longer periods of time.
Blackcurrants have a direct effect on your body’s inflammatory response.
Blackcurrant seed oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that’s been said to help ease inflammation in the body. The high GLA and anthocyanin content can help reduce joint or muscle:
    pain stiffness soreness damage
GLA  -  participants with rheumatoid arthritis could reduce their usual pain medications.
Clinical trials with blackcurrants found that these berries improve eye function, including:
the eyes’ ability to adapt to the dark blood flow to the eyes slowed progression of visual field deterioration in people with glaucoma symptoms of visual fatigue
People who do computer work every day may benefit from blackcurrant. One  tablespoon of blackcurrant reduced visual fatigue two hours afterward.

    1. Immune System
Supplementation with black currant seed oil has been shown to improve the functioning of the immune system by a moderate amount . The production of prostaglandin E 2 in our body leads to a decline in immune function because of lower T cell function. Black currant seed oil provides our body with gamma linolenic acid and alpha linolenic acid ( omega -3 ) which reduces prostaglandin synthesis. As a result, the performance of immune system boosts up. As a result, regular supplementation with black currant seed oil can help our body deal with pathogens, like infections caused by bactera, virus and fungi. One can recover faster from flu and cold. It also helps in auto-immune conditions.
    2. Cardioprotective Effects
Black currant seed oil seems to have influence on the serum lipid profiles of a person. In this study, black currant seed oil supplementation was found to lower LDL cholesterol levels. It also raised HDL to LDL cholesterol ratio, which means that it only lowered LDL cholesterol while not affecting the HDL cholesterol. This shows that black currant oil is quite good for cardiovascular health. It can lower the risk of heart diseases like atherosclerosis.
Black currant seed oil has also been found helpful in preventing cardiac arrhythmia . In this condition, the heart beats without its normal rythym because of lower blood supply to the heart. Black currant seed oil helps to lower the risk of developing this condition. It performs even better than evening primrose oil in this condition, possibly because of higher omega-3 concentration in black currant oil.
    3. Black Currant Seed Oil for Hair Problems
Black currant seed oil helps in many hair problems when taken as a supplement. It combats hair thinning and splitting. It should not be used topically on the hair, as that might be damaging to the hair. When taken internally, it provides our body with essential fatty acids which provide nutrition to the hair follicles. This effect may take a few weeks to show effect.

I take it right UP to the edge of what I really want to say. You can read between the lines.  I could really bust loose but what compels each person is a very personal choice.
    Choices and consequences.
My eyes and focus are fixed but I fall down. "And" brings more conflict. My choice is either/or.  What's it going to be today.  There is a peace that passes all understanding.
When I seek that peace, all of the others things are added onto it.  It is my definitive choice, every single day.

Running old memories like a Yule log, over and over - the kind we see burning on tv, don't actually warm the heart or body.
No matter how flat we make a paleo pancake there are two sides. Two sides to every story. The origin or root meaning of the word "anxiety" = of two minds.
Nothing is gained by allowing old painful memories to be the master of our life. Every day we make a choice of who and what we allow to sit on the throne of our heart.
Our ultimate focus, day in and day out - is either/or.   And  doesn't work.
Either the old memories order our life and priorities or we allow our steps to be directed by some thing far, far greater than those old memories.

Clear your head. You don't have to hop on a plane or go backpacking all across Europe to clear your head. Just remove yourself from those negative people and situations of the past.
Forgive those who've wronged you but you don't have to ingratiate yourself to them again.
Start making new memories. Having too many old negative memories of the past makes it more difficult to make new ones.
Making new memories is better than being stuck in the past.  And tomorrow has enough worries of its own.

This is helpful to me right now, this very minute - because I've been taking a stroll down the part of my memory lane that is paved with razor wire and broken glass and it's time to get off it.  Thanks, meadowlily.
