I know this may not be as kind as what has been previously posted. I quit smoking over 15 years ago and visited a support board. One of the times I liked smoking was while driving. A fellow quitter described what it was like sitting at a stop light and seeing another driver next to her puffing away. Instead of envying the other driver and wishing she could have one, her response as she sat at the light with no cigarette was "you wish you were me". I think that sometimes in the grocery store when I look at carts with the processed foods I used to eat and mine filled with the non-processed basics of fresh foods. It's not so much that I'm better than anyone else. More it's that the carts of others remind me that I have choices and that I'm not suffering because of them.

Day 30. I feel like I should feel confident and strong in the face of non-compliant food, but I'm actually pretty fearful of the re-introduction period. I spent all last weekend fantasizing about the food I'd eventually be able to have this week, after I thought I'd gotten through the worst of the food-craving period. I question the amount of control I'll be able to maintain.

Trying to focus on being proud of the progress I've made so far. Hopefully my weigh-in will be motivation enough tomorrow to not dive face-first into a tub of ice cream.
Well done to everyone who's made progress towards their goals this month

Interesting, I had a dream last night that I had a cheeseburger and some chocolate and as I ate it I was thinking WTF and I was bummed thinking why did I do that.  I don't recall dreaming about food before and I am definitely glad on day 18 that it was just a dream lol

Day 17! I am so excited that I have made it this far   No Slip ups. I've been packing lunch and breakfast and planning meals. I still miss my wine, but I know I can have some eventually. I guess I don't "need" it. I used to have my ritual glass of wine to unwind after work. Now I'm having herbal tea.
I cannot believe how much better I sleep now. Before whole 30 I had to take sleep meds. Several days in, I found my sleep meds were making  me sleepy during the day. My brain is no longer foggy and I don't have an afternoon slump where I need caffeine. I do still enjoy my morning black coffee, but that is the only caffeine I am consuming.
At first I thought I'd try the whole 30, but now I'm convinced this is how I need to live. After whole 30, I won't go back to bread, sugar, etc. I will enjoy an occasional glass of wine and some cheese, but it won't be an every day thing. Wine & Cheese is really the only thing I miss. I definitely see another Whole 30 in my near future.
My 18 year old son has been sticking with it as well. It has been awesome to have someone at home to do this with. He's cooked meals and helped plan our meals/shopping. I am so blessed to have such an awesome kid. He's so excited that his clothes fit better and he went down a size in his jeans.
I had tried whole 30 before, but didn't make it beyond day 3, so this is huge for me. I almost cannot believe it, but my clothes are telling me otherwise and it is an awesome feeling.
I hope everyone is doing well!

Two weeks down and one of my goals is in progress- I really do feel more energetic. I find myself plunging into things to get them done , rather than letting them pile up. I'm still appalled by how much food I have in my freezer and am working to eat that down before I buy more so my meals have been revolving around chicken and pork. Just buying fruit and vegs so grocery bill is down. Keeping it simple, cooking nothing fancy. Today I made emergency meatballs from Stupid Easy Paleo and will build a few meals around them: marina and meatballs over spaghetti squash, mashed up into scrambled eggs, and probably just straight up for the portable protein I take for breakfast.
Anybody have any good things they're noticing?

Snowflower's Eggroll in a Bowl  -- I've been making this for years.  It's a super easy one skillet meal and the leftovers taste great, too!
1 pound ground pork 1/2 yellow or white onion chopped 2 tsp sesame oil 3 cloves garlic 1 tsp ground ginger 1/4C coconut aminos splash of fish sauce 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper 1 package of precut coleslaw from Whole Foods (this has green and red cabbage and carrots and is probably around 6 Cups if you want to cut your own) 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper Brown pork in a large saute pan until fully cooked.  Add chopped onion and sesame oil.  Cook until onions brown a bit.  Mix spices and coconut aminos in a small bowl and then add to pork mixture.  Add splash of fish sauce.  Stir.  Add cabbage mix and stir until cabbage has wilted a little bit.

@Mau_hutch Halfway there, congrats! It's the best feeling when you nail a healthy recipe that you're excited to eat! I can't wait for my taste buds to finally change and I stop craving sweets.
My day 11 has started strong. Fried eggs, sugar-free bacon, banana & black coffee per usual for my weekday breakfast. I was having a lot of cravings over the labor day weekend that've finally calmed down a bit. Someone brought donuts into the office this morning that I easily turned down.
Hope everyone here has held strong!

    Hi Everyone,
I am on day 15 and happily eating my giant protein salad (leftover chicken) for lunch.  Had roasted squash, stir-fried kale and scrambled eggs for brekkie.  Before this program that would have sounded completely unappetizing to eat.  I cannot believe I'm half done.  I think I will eat like this on some days even after re-introduction i complete.  It's just been a rather shocking reset of my previous food biases.

    Good luck,
    Mo

Two pretty good days for me. These last two evenings have actually been a little chilly so oven roasted broccoli really hit the spot and warmed my kitchen! Tonight it's rainy so I found a package of leftover chocolate chili buried in my freezer.  Half a can of tuna with a few cut up hard boiled eggs made for two easy meals. One of those was for breakfast. With my first W30, the thought of tuna for breakfast would have sent me running screaming from the room. Now it just feels like something easy. As does the homemade mayo. I think I've had just one fail in over 2 years and I just turned that into salad dressing. Always feels like a miracle when it turns all white and creamy.
Suski, I find when I'm feeling hungrier than usual, adding some more fat really helps.
    Good luck everyone!

I began my first whole 30 this Monday 8/28, and this evening I feel bloated. I hope this feeling resolves overnight. I'm drinking plenty of water.  28 more days to go   I was planning to begin in September, but I'm planning to go to the Maryland Renaissance Festival on September 30th, so I started early.  After that weekend, I'm planning to begin another Whole 30 on October 2nd.
My husband wouldn't do this with me, but my 18 year old son joined me which makes me very happy. He's even helped with shopping and meal prep. I'm excited and I really feel like we can do this.

I feel SO MUCH BETTER without dairy I just have never had the gall to kick it, Melissa Hartwig is such an inspo on IG and I have all the Whole 30 books lol so excited for this journey!!!

I am starting tomorrow with you guys, too. It will be my third....just need to reset from summer...bad habits creeping back in and I want to get back on track. Excited about this one as I was training for a half marathon during my previous two...and the tiger blood was a bit elusive. I want to see how this goes with my steady regular workout regimen.
Actually just realized I have been completely compliant today.  Thought about calling it day one, but I think I will have my final glass of wine with our end of summer dinner tonight. Good luck to you all. Get some prep in today? I believe someone should start every Whole30 with......"Ladies and gentlemen....start your dishwashers...."

I'm back to it on Tuesday 29th - I crashed off my last attempt after 17 days but this will be my third whole 30. My problem is that I don't have strong negative reactions to particular foods and have drifted back into poor eating (and drinking) choices. When I stay close to template I feel infinitely  better but it's so easy to forget feeling less than great, especially when it creeps up so gradually....

    Hi Scott,
The "why" is very compelling and once it makes sense (logically), it's so much easier to stay committed to the program because you know how GOOD it will be for your health. This is my first Whole30 and I really love it.  It was a bit challenging for me to get started (planning, preparation, shopping, reading labels, etc.) but it's so worth it.  Best of luck to you!

I was going to start with the September 1 group, but just this weekend thought "why wait?".  So I'll start tomorrow. I did some shopping and cleaned out my fridge. I've done a few W30's so this is familiar territory. I just feel the need to clean up some habits I've slipped into - and to slip into a few pairs of jeans that have gotten tighter!  I'm also looking for a bit of an energy boost. I really do feel so much better when I take care of myself with good food. A major goal is to do this simply. I don't buy a lot of specialty items: ghee, as it's a staple for me when I learned dairy is not my friend and coconut aminos, as I do love simple stir fries and the coconut aminos make them taste special. Oh, and I do like kombucha!
    Wishing you all the best!

Tonight I made my lunch for tomorrow. I use a 3 cup container. Filled it with vegs. Added my protein and spices. Poured on some olive oil. No drizzle for me - I heard a a "glug". This will hold me for a bit over 5 hours until dinner. My energy stays stable and I don't get that hollow, desperate hungry sensation. Fat makes it work.

Yes...but you're probably not going to like the answer.
You just have to quit - cold turkey.
(I'll give y'all a few minutes to scream and run to another post - one with a happier answer...)
But if you're still with me....here goes (tough love time).
Like Whole30, you start with one day.  You prep - getting all the booze out of the house.  ALL OF IT (even that $50 you bought for that special occasion).  You tell your friends so they don't hassle you (nor should they...what kind of friends are they really if they're pushing you to do something you don't want to....really, you're stronger than that!).  And then, you don't drink.  You go do something after work that has nothing to do with drinking.  Go to Home Depot and plan out an herb garden, clean your house, get decaf coffee, get tea, go anywhere where there is NO BOOZE!  Then you wake up the next morning, mark a #1 on your calendar.  Just like Whole30 - you mark your first day.  Then you proceed with the second.  Same thing - stay away from "trigger" places, invite a friend over for movie and soda, encase yourself in a "safe, alcohol-free zone".  Then you write a "2" on the calendar and proceed with day 3.
You do this each and every day.  You don't think about the next day - you focus on the present.  You DON'T think about the what-ifs, you just plan to go without.  You tell friends you're just not drinking - and if they keep pushing, you just don't hang out with them. You focus on the present day.  FOCUS!
If you go out you order sparkling water (in a wine glass - so you feel like you're holding an elegant glass of wine, and you have bubbles like you're drinking champagne or beer).  You don't sit at the bar. You order coffee (decaf).  You tell yourself how much classier you are ordering coffee or sparkling water instead of alcohol.  You think about celebrities that don't drink and realize you're just as hot and mysterious.  Even MORE so!
You take it day by day.  And you have to tell yourself to focus on THAT DAY.  You can't think about not drinking tomorrow, or next week, or next month, or at your wedding, or vacation, or holiday, or when your family comes to visit...because you will depress the crap out of yourself if you try to look long term.  You have to choose to not drink today.  Each.  Day.
There is no easy way out of this. If you CRAVE alcohol, there are no cheat days.  There is just you making a decision - do you want to drink, or do you not.
    (didn't Yoda say that somewhere...?)
It is a hard, hard habit to break.  I know.  Trust me, I know.  I love wine.  I love going to Napa.  I love(d) wine dinners - paring different wines with different foods.  I got married at a wine bar!  Meanwhile, I LOVE(d) beer.  I worked at a brewery.  The smell of hops and yeast when you walk in the door of a brewery is like perfume to my nose.  I love the different brewing techniques and all of the wonderful seasonal beers!  I love(d) drinking with my friends...the laughing, the social aspect.  I love(d) warm Bailey's and coffee on cold winter nights and ice cold beer at baseball games on warm summer days.  I LOVED IT ALL!!!  But when my daily routine started looking like this:  8am -"not gonna drink today"....6pm-"well...just one glass of wine"...2-3 glasses later....8am-"God, I feel like crap...ok, not gonna drink today"...lather, rinse, repeat, then it was time realize that it was harmful than helpful and it had to go.
You can tell yourself that you're not me.  And that's OK.  If you can tell yourself you're only going to drink on the weekends and can pull it off, that's great.  If you can tell yourself you're only going to drink wine from here on out and can do it - I wish I had your willpower!!!!  But if you're waking up each day saying you're going to quit and then telling yourself each night that quitting is for quitters...well....
I love that Whole30 gives you the freedom to introduce foods back into your menu as  you see fit.   That there is to be no guilt, no remorse when you enjoy, no - SAVOR, something that may or may not be ideal depending on your reintroduction.  But in the same way you wouldn't stay in a horrible relationship with a person, why make excuses for food or drink?
Even more importantly...I'm GLAD I quit drinking.  I still see my friends - we still go out.  Hell, we go out to bars and breweries!   I still make fabulous dinners.  I throw parties.  I see my family.  And I can do it all WITHOUT alcohol!!!
This may not be the answer you wanted.  It's not the answer I wanted.  But I did it and you can do this.  If you WANT to do it.  And ain't nobody gonna do it for you.
    Day 1.  Decide.

love, Gina - 976 days sober.

Tonight I browned up some thick pork chops, put them on a rack, dumped a large jar of unsweetened applesauce on. Did pressure for 20 minutes, then a quick release. Perfect for an "I-don't-have-a-of-time-to-fuss-but-want-something-good" night.
