Hi, ladies! Good to hear from you! My husband and I were thinking about doing a Whole 30 this month, but we ended up not, since I got the flu on Jan 1, and then I got a stomach bug on Jan 15. We did do our second one in Feb/March of last year. But we definitely need to get back on track!
Congrats on both of your babies!

Hi everyone!  So, I came out to the forum because I found this sweet potato recipe that made me think of Katie, and I was missing y'all thinking you hadn't been posting, and come to find out, all this time you had been!  I stopped getting notifications in my email when a new post was made, so I just assumed no one had been posting anything.  I need to check my settings, because I've missed so much!
So, this is the recipe.  Sounds wonderful!
My girls weekend in VA was completely awesome!  We just hung out, drank, ate, talked, sat in the hot tub.  It was just what I needed to refresh my soul!  There is just something about old friends!  I thought I would really miss my son, but I actually didn't miss him too much.  I was happy to see him when I got home, of course.
Wendy, here's more about the MB boardwalk:
    http://www.visitmyrtlebeach.com/things-to-do/attractions/boardwalk/?utm_campaign=ppc_txt_g_attractions_boardwalk&gclid=Cj0KEQjw1K2_BRC0s6jtgJzB-aMBEiQA-WzDMcE5UneWHYP9e6XEJC5pse3Qf-WHJeNveHPOMBt3ta8aAmpY8P8HAQ
I just happened upon something about it in a travel book my mom had picked up for the MB area.  It's really nice.
Katie, love your tattoo!  It's so pretty!  I'm sorry you can't work out anymore.  Honestly, I wish someone would say that to me.  Ha ha.  But I understand that it does help with mood and other things, along with losing weight/getting fit.  I actually started back up with my mini morning workouts this week, and I feel really good about myself.  It's a stressful time of year now, since I work for the government, and Sept 30 is year end, but I haven't even gotten too stressed this week, which I partially attribute to the exercise.  I also did a 7-day body renewal challenge one of my FB friends invited me to that ended yesterday.  It was just one small-ish thing to do each day, but I really feel like it made an impact.  Wed was drinking more water, Thursday was eating more veggies, Friday was eating GF, Saturday was stretching, Sunday was eating a breakfast with protein, Monday was doing a gratitude journal where you wrote down some things you like about your body, and then yesterday was drinking a green juice.  If you're doing W30, most of those are super easy!
Wendy, that's great that you're doing another one.  I really, really need to.  I thought about doing it after Chase's birthday party on Saturday, but then my Gram will be staying with me for most of October, and Drew will be out of town for work for part of the month, so I don't know if that would just add more stress.  I know, I keep making excuses!  I really need to lose the few lbs I gained back, though!  And a few more!
Ok, gotta get back to work, but it was great catching up on all the posts!

Katie, I hear you on slipping back into bad habits.  I've 100% done that since finishing W30.  I've been eating WAY too many sweet, drinking more alcohol than I probably should, eating foods that I'm not even excited about just because they're there/free.  I need to snap out of it!
Chase's birthday is Sunday (Oct 2), and we're having a part for him tomorrow.  We're going to have a good group of friends and some family.  My mom and her husband are coming.  Drew's mom and her husband were supposed to come, but now they're not.  I totally called that, though, because they moved to a new place on Tuesday, and I said there's no way they'd come after doing that.  And I was right.  That's better for me anyway.  I'm really looking forward to the party.  We ordered a cake from Whole Foods and a nugget tray for Chick Fil A, and then we'll have some chips and dips, cheese and meats, and some filo dough apps you heat up in the oven.  And, of course, wine and beer.  I tried to keep it as simple as possible.  I just want to enjoy it and not feel stressed the whole day, which is what tends to happen when I make parties (especially the food part) too complicated.
I would have thought the same thing about cashew cheese a few months ago, but I made this sweet potato dish that had a cashew cream sauce, and it was wonderful!  So, the cashew cheese may not be too bad.  Let me know if you try it!
Thank you so much for the pumpkin chili recipe!  I'm one of those people who loves pretty much anything pumpkin.  I have a great pumpkin chili recipe I've made for years, but it has beans and corn.  I'm going to try this one, though.
The picture of the lasagna looks delicious!  Although, that's a lot of steps for me!  I try to keep most of my cooking as simple as possible.
I'm still not getting emails when someone replies to this thread, and I even checked my settings to make sure I should be.  Maybe I need to contact their web support.  I don't want to miss out!

I've made a bunch of Indian dishes substituting canned coconut milk for yogurt, cream, or milk. All of them turned out beautifully. And once, when I said my food was not authentic Indian, an Indian person scolded me saying that coconut milk was plenty authentic.

Hi, girls.  The Meet & Greet was pretty uneventful, although I don't know what I was expecting.  We went to his current room and met two sets of parents there.  Then we went to the 2s room and met the teachers.  The teachers in his current room said he'd probably move to the 2s room in January, so I guess that means he'll be in there until Sept 2018?  I'm still not sure on that.  I guess I'll find out when I get a chance to ask the administrators.  I don't necessarily like the thought of him being in the same room for a year and a half, but I guess that's going to happen at some point, based on his birthday, unless we decide/have the option to send him to kindergarten when he's 4, but that seems SO young, especially for a boy!  What are y'all's thoughts on that?
Katie, how was Bushkill Falls?  I grew up not too far south of the Poconos, but we really never spent much time there.  I wonder why.  I grew up in Shenandoah, which is close to Pottsville, where they brew Yuengling beer.  It's only maybe 1.5 hours from Scranton.  We always vacationed at the beach.  Maybe that's why.  But Bushkill Falls sounds really nice!  I am so jealous you have 3 weeks off!  I think I'm getting burned out.  I've had long weekends here and there, but I haven't had a real vacation, like a week, since Thanksgiving last year, which was nice but not really a vacation, since we just went to PA to visit family.  I want a real vacation!
Wendy, that's promising that you might get to start teaching this week!  It breaks my heart that one of the kids asked if they couldn't read well.  So sad.  My friend is a Reading and Recovery teacher for 1st grade.  I wonder if kids that age realize they're not good at reading, and that's why they see her.  I've never asked her.  I worry about Chase having reading issues, because my husband had really bad dyslexia when he was young.  I hope Chase didn't inherit that!
I had the (dis)pleasure of visiting my MIL this weekend.  She and her husband are moving to an Independent Living community, and their place there will be smaller than their current place, so they're giving away a lot of stuff, and my husband wanted some of it.  Things were going ok until she gave us back a wreath I had made her, a picture from our wedding, and a newborn picture of Chase - all Christmas gifts we gave her - saying they didn't have room in the new place.  It really hurt my feelings.  Then, at lunch, she tried to sneak giving Chase Sprite!  Soda!  And he's not even 2!  And then she acted surprised when I asked her not to give him soda.  She definitely knows better and tries to go behind my back and give him stuff.  It makes me SO mad!  I don't have to see her until October 1st, which is going to be Chase's birthday party, and I'm hoping there's enough other stuff going on that I don't have to really spend too much time with her.  She's going to be staying at our house, but my Gram will be there, too, so I'll just hang out with her :).

Hi, ladies.  Katie, I made your collard recipe on Sunday, and Drew and I really liked it!  And it was so easy!  I loved the collard recipe we had, but it wasn't W30 compliant, so I'm glad we have one we like that is!  I'm really glad your endo is trying to get answers for you.  It's great when a doctor is a champion for you, instead of just blowing off your concerns as not valid.  How are you feeling?  Sinus infections are terrible!  I had one a few months ago, but, once I got to the doctor and got antibiotics, I was feeling much better in a day or two!  I've never been to  Chincoteague.  When do you go?
Wendy, I'm glad you're getting to ease into the school year!  I, personally, like spreadsheets, but I'm also a computer geek :).  I hope things go well when you get the kids!
Things are going along pretty normally for me.  Busy, but good!  Tonight we have a Meet & Greet with the teachers at daycare.  I'm not really sure what it's going to be like, since Chase's teachers aren't new.  Once they're 2 or 3, they change classrooms at the beginning of the school year, but, until that point, they change based on milestones.  They moved Chase into the "Walkers" room a few months after he started walking.  I am curious to know when he'll move into the 2s room.  His birthday is October 2, so he's going to be the kid who's the oldest, but I don't know if that's the same for daycare.  I don't know if he'll move into the 2s room when he's 2 or not until the beginning of next school year.

Congrats on the new position, Wendy!  Good luck with packing everything up and moving this week!  That sounds very stressful, but it will be worth it when you start your new position next week!
Katie, how did your appointments go, and did you eat the carrot cake?  Carrot cake (or really any sweet) sounds so good to me right now.  I'm really craving something sweet!
Ksea, I feel like Chase is always going through separation anxiety, but maybe it's because I work full-time.  When I'm home with him myself at any time, I have a hard time getting anything done.  He's always pulling at my legs and whining.  Especially in the evenings after I get home from work.  Sometimes on the weekends, he can play by himself for a bit.  I'm just glad he's out of his 3-month difficult time sleeping phase!  It's now been 9 straight nights that he's gone to bed at his normal time!  Woo hoo!  I don't think you're being selfish at all for wanting to work!  There is no way on God's green earth that I could be a stay at home mom.  I know it works for a lot of people, but it's not for me.  And I'm ok with that.  And I don't feel guilty.  Being at work is good for my happiness, which, in turn, is good for Chase's.  I really do believe that.  Charleston is VERY humid!  It did cool down a bit, but some days are still REALLY hot.  Usually temps in the lower to mid 90s with heat indexes in the lower to mid 100s!  Way too hot to spend time outside, other than at the pool or beach.  I would be sooo happy with 80 right now :).  How is your W30 going?
Did y'all see that there's going to be a big W30 starting on Sept 5?  I'm thinking about doing it, even though I will be home with Chase by myself for a couple weeks out of the month.  I really just need to get myself back on track.  And I think it will be easier this time around, since I have been cooking W30 meals since my first one.  The only problem with Sept 5 is that my son's 2nd birthday party will be Oct 1, and I definitely want to partake in the food for that!  Maybe I could do a W25.
This teriyaki chicken is my recipe to share today.  It was super easy!  The only thing I would change is that I would maybe double the coconut aminos.  When I reduced the sauce on the stove top, it wasn't very much sauce (unless I just reduced it too long).  But the flavor is great!

Wow, I have so much to catch up on.  Maybe I should go by topic instead of person.

Goodreads - I'm on there and would love to be friends with both of y'all (my username is galaxigrl), although my book reading has been very slack since having Chase.  Now when I get downtime at night, I just want to veg in front of the tv.  I do read sometimes on long trips, because Drew just likes to listen to his music and not talk, which I don't mind, because I like to read or sleep or play on my phone.

Music - I love all kinds of music, too, although I've probably started listening to more indie lately.  I do listen to country on the radio, and I recognize a lot of songs, but I don't always know the artists.  My favs are probably Garth (always!), Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan.  And then, in general, some of my current favorite bans are The Mountain Goats, The Avett Brothers, The Head and the Heart.  As for older music, I will ALWAYS love Bruce, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Buffett.  They're all so good!  Sometimes I really miss being close to major music venues, but I guess I've gotten used to it.  There's an awesome ampitheatre in Northern VA, where I used to live, called Wolftrap (they were actually talking about it on NPR the other day).  They don't get a ton of big acts, but you can bring your own food and alcohol, and it's really relaxed.  It's so nice on a summer evening.

Katie, did I ever mention that my family vacations in Wildwood every year?  Are you close to there?  They're going in a couple of weeks.  We came up for it last year but not this year.  It's just too much time in a car for Chase, and it's not easy to get there from here by plane.

Weight - I totally get feeling upset about your weight, even though it shouldn't be about that.  I'm the same way.  The last time I weighed myself I was exactly what I weighed after W30, but that's already like 4 months ago, and I feel like I'm still eating pretty well, so I should have lost more.  But, in reality, I haven't been eating that well, and I don't ever exercise, so it makes sense.  Drew and I talked about doing another W30, but he's going to be travelling for work off and on from Aug - Oct, so I don't know when we'll do it.  I'm totally freaking out about being home all week with Chase by myself.  Wendy, you're probably laughing because you have a ton of kids, and I'm freaking out about taking care of one by myself.  I've just never done it, and Chase is way off his going to bed schedule, so it's going to be a challenge.  There's no way I'll be able to do a W30 during that time.  I don't even know how I'm going to make dinner for myself, because whenever I try to do anything but pay attention to him in the evenings, he just cries the whole time and pulls at my pants/dress/skirt.  It might be a good time to introduce TV .

I have no idea how you could not want to get your drivers license as soon as humanly possible, but both my cousin and stepsister were in no hurry.  I don't get it at all.  I couldn't get mine fast enough!

You know I can't leave y'all without a recipe.  This is one we made on Saturday.  A little out of the ordinary but really good.  We weren't that hungry, so we ate it by itself, but I think it would go good with some fish.  Katie, I get a lot of recipes by following Whole30 Recipes on Instagram, and I find a lot on Pinterest.  I don't know how much y'all use Pinterest, but the more pins you pin on the same topic, the more of those pins will be in your feed.  I'm definitely goingn to try grilling sweet potatoes and apples.  That sounds yummy!

Hi all.  My weekend with my mom was fun.  The pizza dinner and cake were both awesome!

Wendy, this time, I just got a yellow cake with cream cheese icing (my mom's husband likes the basics), but I love their German chocolate (or just chocolate cake with chocolate icing), and they also make a strawberry that I think is just the yellow cake with strawberry icing, but the icing is to die for!  All of their icings are amazing.  I'm not even much of a fan of cake.  They have a small 4" one that is more than enough for 2-3 people, and it's only $9 or $10.  I also am jealous of all the great concerts you go to.  I love Keith Urban, Billy Joel, and Elton John.  The one thing that kind of stinks about living in Charleston is that we don't realy get big name concerts.  The last one I went to was, I think, Miranda Lambert, who's pretty big, but we never get Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen or anyone like that.  When I lived outside of DC, I went to SO many concerts.  Now I go to some small - medium sized ones, but not like I used to.  I hope you have a wonderful birthday tomorrow!

Katie, I hear you on the cooking.  Up until this week, I had been doing a lot of really easy meals that I had made a bunch of times before.  All this cooking gets to me every once in a while, and I just need easy stuff.  I'm glad you had a good cry and are feeling better!  Sometimes you really need that.

These are two good recipes I made this week:

Thai Curry Salad - If you like Thai/curry,you have to try this one! The dressing makes more than you need for the salad, so we've been putting on steamed veggies and other things we've made this week.

Strawberry Basil Chicken - A great summertime meal!

Ramonax, you've explained it perfectly. Moving from the black & white rules into the grey areas and the psychology involved has been a big challenge. I've struggled with self-sabotage in the past and it will be a long process to fully overcome that. I'm trying to focus on non-food "treats/rewards" because it's so easy to allow food rewards to snowball until I'm justifying anything as another treat and then before I know it, all of my positive efforts are gone.
I hit the 20 lb mark this week and putting that non-food reward idea into practice, decided to treat myself by dressing up the front porch a bit. We have a covered porch with a little cafe table and two chairs. It stays well protected from the rain, but has never felt very welcoming. Yesterday I picked up an indoor/outdoor rug from ikea (translate: cheap) and put it under the table and chairs. I took a small pot of pansies from the back deck and put it on the table, and then hung a string of clear round lights under the eaves. Between the rug and the lights, I spent $55. It's spendier than a food treat but cheaper than most date nights and the results benefit more than just me. It's now cozier, inviting to anyone who comes to our door, and I'm looking forward to a cup of hot tea out there after the kids go to bed on many summer evenings to come. This kind of thing is so out of the norm for me! I'm quite frugal and this feels like a real splurge. That's the part I need to keep at the forefront - food splurges don't feel nearly as satisfying and are short-lived.

galaxigrl - I get what you mean about all the struggle of being complaint with all the eating out/parties etc. I'm trying to shift my thinking from *being complaint* to *making choices that will make me feel better in the long run*. It feels less black and white or like my choice is to deny myself or have fun. I'm trying not to give myself permission to EAT ALL THE THINGS just because I'm at a party. Maybe I'll eat the homemade black forest cake, but I won't eat the store bought baguette or m&ms. Stuff that is generally mindless eating or not special. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well - I just know my thinking about what I get to eat sabotages me all the time. So I'm trying to shift that.

I wish I could respond to everyone, but I missed galaxigrl's "are you expecting?" post, then had to go back and reread a bunch.  Oh, that question is SO RUDE AND OUT OF LINE! Makes me want to punch them in the face, too!!
I remember when I was mailing a baby shower gift at the post office many years ago (like 22, and I still remember!), and the post office guy asks, "When is your baby due?" I just glared at him, and said, "She was due about 3 months ago."  Seriously, that is such a dangerous question, as I know SO many women who have struggled to get pregnant, then lost the baby, or just were never able to get pregnant.  I lost a baby once at 24 weeks, and then had to bear all those, "Did you have the baby already?" questions for months from people who didn't know me well.  <sigh> Ok, I'm done venting now, but I'm still mad at that lady, galaxigrl!!

katieblue, hope you get good news about the interview! <fingers crossed> Also, for the meat sauce,  I just did the tomato sauce in the W30 book, then did the "perfect ground meat" recipe, then added the meat to the tomato sauce.  Do you have the book?

ksea, I bet the bbq saw was full of sugar.  That hadn't even crossed my mind.  I ate a small salad at lunch today but no room for added protein or fat.  And then I remembered that I never ate dinner last night either.  I'm amazed/appalled at how much that lunch filled me up yesterday leading me to skip dinner and skimp on both breakfast and lunch.  That will definitely make me reconsider next time.  I should just ask for a to-go box and immediately put half the food into it to start with.  Then I can still enjoy the food, but without such drastic impact on the following meals.  It sounds good in theory . . . .

So are you all ready for a laugh??  This made me think of the comments we've shared about galaxigrl being asked when she was due . . . .  My sister-in-law and I met today with an event coordinator at a local restaurant.  The coordinator asked what kind of event we're planning.  "A 50th Anniversary party", I said.  In total seriousness, she looked at me and asked, "Oh, is it yours?".  I thought my sis-in-law's eyes were going to pop out of her head!  Hmmm, doing the math, I would have gotten married 7 years before I was even born!!  What???  Okay, I do have a few grey hairs, but there's NO WAY I look like I'm in my early 70s!  Holy cow.    So it just goes to show that some people speak before they think and you can't take them too seriously.

Hi all!  Sorry I've been MIA for a few days.  My grandmother got into town on Friday night, and we were busy, busy, busy this weekend.  Then yesterday was a crazy day at work.  So I haven't been able to catch up on the posts until today.  I've made some great meals over the last couple of days.  One was skirt steak over a brussel sprout slaw with chimichurri, which sounds fancy but was pretty easy.  The other was basil chicken meatballs with roasted green grapes.  I got these recipes from the whole30recipes Instagram account.  I've found a lot of delicious, simple recipes on there.

I'm still mostly sticking to W30 cooking - always doing W30 meals when meal planning - but allowing myself to eat other stuff when I really want it, like a couple of bites of chocolate at night or a glass of wine here and there.

ksea: Can you repost that slow cooked pork shoulder recipe?  I can't seem to find it.  I bought a pork butt to make carnitas, but I may make that recipe instead.

jen c: That's awesome that your hubby is considering a W30!  My friend, who gets hives, did a W30, and hers went completely away.  I hope it works for your husband, too!  And great news about your allergies!  That's a HUGE NSV!

Wendy:  Love the reuben rolls!  Now I need to put them on my meal plan again.  Just thinking about them makes me hungry (even though I just finished breakfast ).

Ramona: I agree that post W30 eating can be a slippery slope!  When I absolutely could not have X food, I didn't.  But now that I can, I tend to let myself have more than I probably should, especially in the way of snacking.  I really need to be mindful of that.

katie: Congrats on your awesome workout the other day!  And your second Easter dinner recipes sounded awesome.  I want to make more slaws and stuff now that it's getting warmer out.  I like the idea of broccoli slaw with pineapple and mayo.  I made a carrot, raisin, pineapple, and mayo slaw last night to have with my lunch today.  Those were literally all of the ingredients.  I love easy recipes!

For those who are interested, I found Mel Joulwan's Rogan Josh recipe online: http://meljoulwan.com/2010/07/13/paleo-rogan-josh/.  I think my favorite recipe I made during my W30 was the spaghetti squash from the W30 book with the tomato sauce and ground meat.  It was definitely a good spaghetti and meat sauce sub.  This is random, but I also really liked this recipe: http://meljoulwan.com/2015/01/19/thai-pink-grapefruit-salad/.  I left out the dried shrimp, because my husband was grossed out by it, but I bet it would be even better with it!

I was on a 2-day roll with the exercising and haven't done it since.  Staying up too late!  Maybe tomorrow, but I already have to get up early to prep a slow cooker meal, so maybe Thursday.  Ha ha.

Two days of exercising in a row!  The sad part is that I'm sore today.  After just a 10 minute workout.  It's actually a pretty intense 10 minutes (at least for someone like me who has been lazy for a while now).  I do 1 min of lunges, 1 min of jumping jacks, and then 1 min of the following with a 30 second break in between: bicep curls with 5 lb weights, shoulder presses with 3 lb weights, squats, lunges with 3 lb weights, and Russian twists.  After I worked out today, I decided to just see how much I weighed.  I'm up 2.2 lbs from Day 31.  This is why I hate the scale!!!  I'm trying to forget about it and press on.  I know I haven't eaten 100% clean this past week, but I thought I was doing well.

jen c: That's a bummer about the sugar.  I hope you get it figured out.

ksea: I had been debating getting a sparkling water maker, too.  I think they're worth it.  I've noticed, for me, if I have some sparkling water with fruit, herbs, natural flavors in it or some kombucha to drink in the evenings, I'm MUCH less likely to have alcohol.  And thanks for the dressing tip.  I know I've said it before, but I'm so in love with the homemade mayo.  I could probably put that on my salad just as it is!  Thanks for the tip on the podcasts, too.  I rarely listen to podcasts, mostly just because I forget about them.  And congrats on getting some exercise in!

Wendy: I was wrong about the balsamic.  That solidifies, too.  Could you just bring the dressing to work and run the bottle under some warm water when you want to put it on your salad?  That's what we do when we want to use it.  Or just take it out of the fridge like 15 mins or so before lunchtime?  I also didn't think I would make it through 30 days with no alcohol, but I guess when we do stuff like this, we find out we're stronger than we think we are!

katie: The ginger Kombucha is my favorite.  I like the Lavendar, too.  But I love, love, love anything ginger.  I think it kind of tastes like ginger ale, which I really enjoy but don't drink, since I try to stay away from soda.

Ramona - I think it's great that you're going to try to get out every day. Sometimes I don't walk outside once during the day, and it makes me sad when I'm leaving. Everyone needs a little sunshine!
ksea - I really need to start exercising, too. I feel like it's so hard when you have a little one! I'm going to start with 10 minute intense workouts in the morning and then see if I can work up to something more.
Katie - that sucks that you had a bad reaction to the icing. But it's good as far as knowing what does and doesn't make you feel good. Glad you're going to resist the cake on Sunday! And thanks for sharing your sweet potato casserole recipe. I'm definitely going to make that sometime.
Wendy - we are definitely friends, and congrats on not going to crazy at the Asian buffet.
I had Pad Thai for dinner tonight. I'm glad I didn't finish all of it, but I didn't feel so great after eating it. Too sweet for sure. Now my husband and I are watching bball and drinking beer, but I'm not drinking nearly as much as I normally would have! Small victories. I have no issues cooking W30. I just wish it was easier to eat out on it!

WE DID IT!!!!!  Congrats to all of us!

    NSVs:

    1. I cut WAY back on my snacking.  I used to snack all the time.  I still do a little bit of it, but I've probably cut out about 80%.
    2. I have absolutely no craving at this moment.  I'm not DYING to have anything I haven't had for the last 30 days, including sugar! (I think this one is especially huge for me.)
    3. I feel good about myself and what I'm putting into my body.  I feel like I'm taking care of myself and really honoring my body for the first time...in maybe forever.
    4. WAY less digestive issues!
    5. I loved being on a "diet" where I could eat enough food to make myself full.  I feel like I lost a good amount of weight for not counting calories, fat, or anything else, and not working out at all other than an occasional walk with the stroller.
    6. I agree with Katie that homemade condiments are amazing!  Much better than the store-bought ones.  I will be making W30 mayo and ranch dressing forever!

I was going to have wine and a cadbury egg tonight, and now I don't even know if I will.  Like Katie, I'm going to maybe just keep going with this and see how things go.
