By the end of 2011, I was the heaviest I had been in nearly 20 years. When I found myself shopping for what I call "fat clothes" (the new wardrobe you're forced to buy because nothing actually fits anymore) I knew I had to do something and decided to try the whole30.
I started the program several times through 2011 and every single time, I had immediate positive results. I would drop a few pounds, get restful sleep, and feel amazingly better within days. Each time, armed with that feeling of success, I thought I could hack the program and do it on my own terms and prematurely introduced foods and drinks I felt I couldn't live without. All of my attempts ended short of 30 days with me heavier and more depressed than I had started.
In January of 2012, after some routine blood tests and a subsequent ultrasound revealed I had fatty liver disease, I knew I had reached a new low. The problem was no longer just about vanity, but about the fact that my health was severely declining in a real measurable way. I emailed Melissa a desperate plea and begged her to help me get my life back. Her response was not about the whole30. It was about recognizing what I was doing to myself and committing to make a change. In her words, "Change nothing, and nothing changes." On that day I bought the whole30 success guide, jotted down a few recipes, cleaned out my kitchen, and started my first real whole30.
I have completed 2 full programs (with a couple cocktails and a hot fudge brownie incident in between) since that day. In just 2 months I was able to cure my fatty liver disease, drop 20 lbs, and lower my blood pressure from 140/102 to 116/77. I am able to sleep through the night and wake energized and excited instead of depressed and anxious. The physical results are amazing but I've gotten so much more out of the program than I ever gambled for.  I'm amazingly happier and while I was afraid of missing out on something while not at the bars or restaurants I used to spend every night in, I'm now part of an incredible community of farmers and foodies in the San Francisco area.  It's like I didn't just get my life back, I got an upgraded version of my life back. I'm a whole-hearted whole30 fan and happy to be here to help!
