  1. Hi all! I thought I would start a thread specifically for these two issues which go together for many people, including myself. I was diagnosed with FMS at age 12 (I'm 30 now). I've been gluten-free for many years, and when I learned about Paleo this past summer, I tried to incorporate some Paleo principles into my diet, and even on a limited basis, it made a HUGE difference for me. I've been able to work some 40-hour weeks this fall, which I have not been able to do for literally years. I am very excited to be starting the Whole30 today. I'm especially looking forward to seeing if I can slay the sugar dragon. When you have low energy, it's so easy to give yourself emergency energy boosts with sugar (which is just a vicious cycle, of course!). I have the Hartwigs' book as well as Well Fed by Melissa Joulwan (I've already made her mayo and her "sunshine sauce," soooooo good!). I think lots of us people with fibro have self-corrected with these eating habits over the years, but I'm finally ready to add some structure and discipline to it to get some serious results now that I've had a taste of what's possible!
  2. Hello. This is my first time doing Whole30. I have fibromyalgia and a gluten allergy. I am on Day 9. ALWAYS when I eat I get incredibly cranky, dizzy, and tired to the point of not being able to stand up. Since starting this diet ALL of those problems have gone away. I’ve had so much energy, I don’t get dizzy and cranky when I eat, and I haven’t taken any involuntary naps after eating. Until today. It’s come back and I’m looking for advice as I’m scared, because I was so relived everything was going well. For context, I haven’t slipped or cheated. Last night I ate out for the first time, I had unseasoned boiled chicken and green beans and broccoli at Applebee’s thought. Today my menstraul cycle started. And what I just ate was chili lime chicken breast Cobb salad recipe from the Whole30 instagram. 20 minutes after eating I got extremely dizzy and cranky. I got so tired I couldn’t stand. I had to lay down and legitimately fought to stay conscious and couldn’t. This hasn’t happened since I started the diet and I desperately don’t want it to start again because it’s scary. If anyone has been through this or has any idea what’s happening to me, I’d really appreciate the input. I was really happy being healthy for once. Thanks

    I am trying to get everything in order to start the Whole30. Right now I'm feeling very overwhelmed. One thing I'm concerned about is the nightshades since they may cause inflammation and I have Fibromyalgia. Should I start out using them or ignore all together?

    New to the whole30

    Hi! I am ready to start my whole 30 and am looking forward to the benefits. I battle daily with headache/migraine, fibro, and sleep issues. I'm also vegetarian and looking for ways to incorporate protein in my diet as I do not eat eggs even. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

I'm only on Day 2, so I may be jumping the gun here, but I've noticed that as I go through my day I am getting hungrier MUCH quicker than normal (previously eating a pretty fluff/carb laden diet) I'm doing a physical therapy program for my POTS (lots of working out) so my POTS symptoms themselves are pretty under control but I'm wondering if my overactive nervous system (dysautonomia AND fibro) doesn't know what to do with itself without the fast energy from carbs? I'm getting what I feel are good balanced meals, Breakfast today was 2 eggs, 2 homemade pork sausages, and a banana with some cashew butter. Lunch was a salad of 3 cups of leafy greens, about a palm and a half of chicken and a few almond slivers tossed in for extra crunch, Dinner meatballs over spaghetti squash. Its not like I'm skimping on portions here. I eat until I'm full, and then and then two hours later I get the tell tale ache craving food. A piece of fruit with a thumb sized portion of cashew butter usually does the trick. I'm getting my fluids, and I'm getting my sodium (I take a sodium/potassium supplement on doctors orders) I hope this is temporary but I would LOVE some tips to help my body adjust. I've done a lot of work to get my body back from chronic illness (I still have my days where it wins)

I have quite a few complex chronic health issues: fibromyalgia (18 years), pyrrole disporder, homozygous MTHFR mutation, copper toxicity, hypothyroidism, iron deficiency anemia, IBS, high cholesterol and BP, fatty liver, numerous nutritional deficiencies like zinc and B12, life-long excema, psoriasis, and I'm atopic with multiple low-grade food allergies (including lettuce if you can believe it!), anterior bony impingement syndrome in my ankles, bursitis in my shoulder, have very tight muscles and tendons body-wide, and I'm obese. These are the issues I can remember off the top of my head. As you can imagine, that's quite a list of symptoms, most of which change for apparently no good reason (or none that I have pinned down, anyway), and which could be impacted by quite and number of environmental or bodily factors - including other conditions. EG 'fibro fog' could also be the copper toxicity or the IBS might be firbromyalgia related or the pyrrole disorder. My hubby and I are almost finished our Whole30 and I'm not noticing a lot of changes - measurable or otherwise. I'm getting to sleep faster, but that might be largely because I've stopped my habit of eating something in bed at night (awful, I know) while I read till I start to fall asleep (helps shut my brain down). I still have IBS symptoms, but they may have improved a bit. My fibro is bad at the moment, largely due to back cramping which means some days I can't get through a shower without having to sit down. Judging from the fit of my clothes, I've lost a little bit of weight but I didn't want to get on the scales before or after, I wanted to go on how I felt. My memory sure hasn't improved! My integrative doctor (and the one I saw when we lived elsewhere) recommended going sugar, gluten, dairy, and caffeine free and low GI and paleo seemed the easiest way to get my head around doing that. When I started paleo early 2015 I was good as gold (with paleo treats) for 6 weeks before my husband was deployed and things fell a bit to the wayside and I started snacking unhealthily again. I noticed a big improvement in that 6 weeks - for the first time in years I was able to stand up at the kitchen counter long enough to help prepare and cook meals. We fell off the paleo-bandwagon almost completely in 2016 (meals were still pretty clean, but they were the only thing that was) until we started the Whole30 program (with the additional 'rules'). My integrative doc had me on a TON of supplements, which we can no longer afford. Part of that was a Metagenics cleanse to hopefully fix gut candida and dysbiosis (may be back given what my diet has been since then). She's pro vegan and that's not a direction I want to take. So I'm just seeing her to manage my hypothyroidism till I can hopefully (medical issues notwithstanding) get a part-time job to pay for her treatment and all the supplements and prescriptions. So, that's the background. My problem is that I'm torn about whether to extend our Whole30 or add to it by eliminating nightshades and/or other potentially problematic foods. Anybody have any thoughts?
  7. Hi! I'm a 58 year old school nurse for 950 elementary students. As an RN for nearly 37 years, I've placed taking care of others over myself. As I get older, I realize it's catching up to me. I've battled fibromyalgia and chronic Lyme Disease for many years. The fatigue, pain and depression that's gone along with these have kept me feeding that sugar dragon and feeling worse and worse. I weighed 117 pounds when I got married at 30. I' ve gained 30 pounds over the years and feel so bad when I look in the mirror. I looked at the Whole 30 before, but thought it sounded too difficult to carry off. But last week I decided I'm going to do this! It's hard to imagine I can get to where I won't want sugar, but I'm going to trust the Hartwig's on this. I can do it!!!
  8. Hi... I'm sure this has been answered numerous times but I'm in such a fog and so much pain I don't have the patience to search... sorry, just being honest. I am on day 13 after a re-start and am having the WORST fibro flare of my life! I am literally bound to bed or the couch and everything hurts--especially my back, shoulders, and neck. I also have raging headaches that feels like a vice-grip is attached to my head! Anyone out there suffering from fibro flares and headaches at this phase of the program? Your help is appreciated.

    Hopeful but nervous

    I've finally finished reading both my books and I'm really looking forward to the new recipe book coming out in December. My whole30 journey is an attempt at regaining my health post cancer treatment. While I've been 'clean' from a cancer perspective for 1390 days, the toll that chemo and radiation took on my body has been significant. Damaged nerve receptors, chemo induced fibromyalgia (whodda thunk it), cognitive function deficits, osteopenia, chronic bronchitis (asthmatic since age 8 and I think the radiation played a roll in my bronchitis), PTSD, depression, anxiety and weight gain. But hey, I'm still here LOL I'm hoping that whole30 will fix the fibromyalgia and I wonder how the 'hormone balancing' will effect someone like me, who takes Arimidex due to my hormone positive cancer. Why am I nervous? I have a bad sugar addiction! I love fruit, most veggies (ixnay on the onionsay), most proteins but its my sugar addition that I fear most. I found it humorous to read that this isn't hard, beating cancer is hard - but I gotta tell you, my sugar addiction scares me more than when I faced chemo and radiation. What I do know...I'm tired of being in pain all the time, I'm tired of being 70lbs heavier than when I was first diagnosed, I'm tired of being addicted to sugar and I'm tired of being tired lol I want off this merry go round! Anyone in a similar situation? Advice?

    Started April 18

    Hello everyone! I started my Whole30 last week, so today is day 7. My daughter is doing her second Whole30, and is very encouraging. I have fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, hypertension, chronic migraines, Geri and depression and I'm very excited to see what health benefits I can reap from this gastric re-boot. I actually took about two weeks before I started to wean myself from sugars. I stopped grains and dairy cold turkey, but cut back on stevia and hidden sugars gradually. With my chronic Fibro pain, I wanted to minimize the Carb Flu if I could. After a week of tummy troubles, I have had more energy and less brain fog - a big improvement in quality of life! That has made it possible to exercise more, which is also a big help. Pain level has remained about the same so far. I'd love to hear from anyone who has similar health issues, or is a bit on the older side like me.
  11. I'm on Day 23 of my Whole30 and things are going well. I have seen changes in three areas so far. First, I have more energy than I've had in ages! It lasts all day and improves my life in so many ways (I get more done, I feel better about my life because I'm more productive, I feel less overwhelmed, my more positive mood leads to having more fun, I have the energy to make dinner!) Second, I don't have any achy spots or all over body aches from the fibro. I got my period about a week ago and did have some fibro pain for a couple of days. The contrast was distinct. Third, I've lost a little weight. My clothes fit better. I wish it were more but I'll stick with the plan hope it continues. The other goal I had for the Whole30 was to improve my exercise recovery. Specifically, whenever I exercise my muscles get sore and tight very easily. It's fine line between doing enough to gain a benefit and not doing too much. When I cross that line, it can take days for the soreness to go away. My whole body hurts at times. I can live with a sore muscle or two, the other issue though is that I'm hypermobile and the tight muscles become a problem because they pull my bones out of alignment (in my SI joint or my thoracic vertebrae for example). So far the Whole30 has not improved these symptoms. My question is might I still see improvement in these symptoms in the last week? Or in another few weeks of Whole30? Should I think about eliminating additional foods from the auto immune protocol? Any suggestions about which ones to start with? Should I delay the reintroduction phase or go ahead? Are there other members out there with fibromyalgia doing the Whole30 currently/recently? What's your experience been like?
  12. I just finished my first complete Whole 30. Last summer I made it through about three weeks of a Whole 30 and had great results even though I didn't complete it. This time I made it through the whole 30 days and I feel terrible. I'm having a major flare up of fibromyalgia. Also, when I started I was sleeping great, now it is a struggle again. I've been trying to think of anything I've done differently this time. The only things I could think of were last time I was also seeing a chiropractor and this time I've taken some prescription medications that I wasn't taking before. This is a typical day of meals- meal one - coffee with ghee and coconut oil, soup made with bone broth, veggies and a protein; meal two - spicy beef and bok choy or tuna with primal mayo and a large salad; meal three - pork roast, prosciutto wrapped asparagus and roasted sweet potato. If I needed a snack it was typically boiled eggs and/or an apple with sunbutter or occasionally an Rx bar. The fibro flare started after I'd eaten tomatoes several days in a row. I knew white potatoes trigger my fibro, but didn't think the tomatoes would. I'm thinking about transitioning into a modified AIP and eliminating nightshade, nuts and possibly coffee.
  13. Hello I am new here.. I have read the whole 30 Book and planned to start on Jan 4th but soon became over whelmed with all the extra that I need to cut out due to my health issues.. I know that I won't be successful if I am not properly prepared as I have a major sugar addiction. I'm looking for resources for recipes that incorporate the egg and nightshades free plus the IBS low FODMAP restrictions.. The book is great but most of the recipes seem to have something that I cant have. I have a 3 year old and an 11 month old.. so dinners need to be something that they will also eat and isn't too time consuming to prepare.Leftovers for me for lunch would also be a huge bonus. I need something for breakfast that I can perhaps make a head of time and eat on the go (while feeding them and getting out the door lol) I hope to start on Monday Jan 11th. Some of my staples for cooking like tomato sauces, garlic and bell peppers I'm no longer supposed to eat Please help as I don't really know where to go to get started... thanks
  14. Good evening! I wanted to start whole 30 in hopes of helping relieve some of the chronic ailments I have and I have read many posts on how this program actually helped reduce symptoms. My husband and I started this past weekend; but due to my fibromyalgia and various other ailments, I have chronic, irretractable nausea accompanied by chronic vomiting. As such, in the past three days, I have remained whole 30 compliant but my food intake has been extremely limited... I am starting to worry that I will not get the benefits associated with this program simply because if my inability to hold food down most days. Any suggestions on a micro level whole 30? Specific food I should really focus on?. I constantly hydrate (even before), I am nibbling in raw veggies the most over the past three days, but have no idea how to tackle this with the nausea issues. Any ideas is greatly appreciated!
  15. I am on Day 3 of my second Whole 30--the last one was in Feb/March. I asked then whether there was anyone else with dysautonomia, and I want to ask again this go around. Anyone else out there doing this? I'd love to compare experiences. I also have: fibro, migraines, low blood pressure, high HR, TMJ, IBS, allergies, high cholesterol, and lots of other stuff, but dysautonomia/POTS is what really keeps me down the most. I had somewhat helpful results with my first Whole 30, especially in the area of reducing my migraines from near daily to only 4 days of 30, but I got impatient with the reintroduction and gave in about day 45 and ate teriyaki and rice (sugar, soy and grains at once, oh boy). Something made me really sick, but I don't know what. So I'm back again to do it right. Hoping anyone else with dysautonomia might be here to discuss the unique trials that come w/ this rare disease.
  16. Hi everyone. I am actually too sick to write a long post. I'm somewhere around day 18 I think. I havent cheated but I am too sick to cook. I buy veggies and tgey go off. Then, I have to clean out a fridge with food that's gone off. I feel overwhelmed by life, but especially by food. I have seen no improvement in my pain levels. Anyone else take a while to see a breakthrough. I am so desperate. Any insights welcome. Thanks.
  17. Day 2 of the rest of my life! I am sick and tired of being sick and tired! I'm 39 years old and want to run and play with my family but my body aches with every step and then I'm so exhausted! Well that is going to be a thing of the past in less than 30 days!!
  18. Hi there, After several false starts (reset, reset, reset!) I'm starting the program today (well, I guess Day 1 will be tomorrow). I have Celiac Disease, so I'm already gluten free. But I'm really struggling with giving up sugar and chocolate and chips -- I go to sugar and chocolate when I'm tired, which is often, and I realize I'm making the situation worse. Beyond the weight gain, I want to try to reduce inflammation. I have fibromyalgia and a fair amount of pain and fatigue. So, I'm just looking for buddies for support as we do this plan together.   19. I am wondering if any other fibro sufferers out there can chime in with any bits of advice about what has helped to alleviate your symptoms. I am at day 37 and, to be honest, not feeling that great. I started with the basic Whole30 plus no nightshades and will probably also drop eggs and nuts in the next few weeks. However, since these are pretty big, potentially long-term changes for me that often require that I often eat a separate meal from my family, I am trying to keep things as small-scale as possible. So, if you don't mind taking a minute to let me/us know what has helped you, I would be so grateful! I am especially interested in the following: -- Did you do the regular Whole30 or the AIP? Either way, how long did it take for you to get relief? -- If you avoid nightshades, are you also careful about spices? -- Have you been able to add any foods back to your diet after you finished the Whole30? -- How much do you feel that exercise helps you? -- How much do you need to sleep at night? Some other info about me: I have a fairly mild case of fibromyalgia, but since I spend all day taking care of 2 young children I am very keen to get some energy back if nothing else. I think that some aspects of my health (allergies, headaches, blood sugar crashes, skin problems) have improved over course of the Whole30, but off/on pain and exhaustion continue. I felt really terrible the first three weeks of the Whole30 and am finally perking up, but things still aren't great. I do supplement with magnesium, a probiotic, and fermented cold liver oil. Honestly, I am so tempted to eat the (good, homemade) food I feed my kids sometimes that I just about lose my mind. I just want to know that this is going to be worth it in the end!
  20. I am on day 11 of my whole30. I have fibromyalgia and wanted to finally figure out what my food sensitivities are. I knew gluten and dairy were a problem. But I wanted to confirm and find any Biden ones. Well I have more energy and my anxiety has declined but I am having unexplained skin irritation and itching. It is driving me crazy.     Pain and the Program!

    Hi, I am a 28 year old mom of four and I recently had a hysterectomy. I am curious if anyone else can tell me how they managed the program with hormone treatments! I have also suffered from permanent nerve damage from the waist down for the past ten years and have been diagnosed with a severe case of fibromyalgia. I take medication daily to relieve some of the pain, but just recently heard from a friend that I should definitely give the program a try. However, I saw a few posts on here concerning other members with fibromyalgia that said, "Some days they felt really bad." I can't really afford to have days any worse than they tend to be already with a home to run and four kids under the age of nine. If anyone could give me some insight it would be greatly appreciated!
  22. I'm a 50-year old married mother of two grown children. My 25-year old son has moved back with us to help tend his disabled veteran father who suffers with PTSD and bi-polar disorder. My daughter is married with three adorable children who are my lifeline. I've been researching the Paleo Diet and lifestyle and think it would benefit my whole family immensely. My husband was raised and prefers fast food/TV dinners. My son loves good food and is willing to try new things, but is 150 lbs overweight with stomach problems. I am 60 lbs overweight and suffer from debilitating fibromyalgia and arthritis pain. I'm ready to get back living again and enjoying my grandchildren. I spend a lot of time in bed. I'm ready to stay out of bed except to sleep. A cashier at a Fresh Foods market told me she had been on the Whole 30 diet for a month and has felt better. She lost not weight, but size due to all the inflammation she no longer has! I'm inspired. I'm committed. Don't know how committed my family is but I'm going all the way. Look forward to the support that comes from community. If anyone else is starting on August 1, I'd love to partner up. If anyone lives in Utah County, Utah, that's where I'm at to support each other as well. Let's do this!!! Sally
  23. I'm about to launch on my second whole 30.. my first was almost two years ago and I wish I would have stuck with it because I wouldn't be in the predicament I'm in now. After losing 110lbs a few years ago with weight watchers and exercise I have gained 65lbs this past year despite a lot of exercising and attempted healthy diet. I have a bit of a sugar addiction and find it easy to binge since I was so restrictive before when losing all the weight. I developed the above conditions after losing my weight and have struggled ever since. I have worked out 4-6x a week since 2010 sometimes even more however, recently my conditions have worsened (Hashimotos, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue) and I came down with a nasty case of shingles. I recently cut back my exercise (for the past three months) and only do a ladies cross fit gym 2-3x a week. I am so exhausted and am wondering if the exercise is causing extra stress which is causing flares within my immune system. Would you recommend keeping my exercise program while starting the whole 30 or taking a break and just focusing on the food portion until my body has recovered?

    After over a year of consideration, I started my 1st Whole30 on Tuesday. I'm really hoping this makes a giant change in my life. On my third day, and some of my Fibromyalgia symptoms are not present. I'm so ready for this change!
  25. Hello all! Today is my day 8 of the Whole30 and I am in unbelievable pain. I have battled Fibromyalgia for many years, and suspected MS. I know this program will eventually help me feel better and improve my health, so I am trying so hard to stick with it. Any advice or words of encouragement to get me through until I get on the other side of the hideous pain would be very welcome!
