  1. Hello everyone! Looking for other women/men who have undergone thyroid cancer or have had it removed due to cancer or disease. Or someone with thyroid issues. I’m hypothyroid. Struggling with insomnia , fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, hair loss dry skin , calicium deficient and iron Deficient both big deals! since thyroid was removed and no gallbladder all the other yucky terrible thyroid issues. Like hormone inblances Ever since thyroid cancer and removal my heath went down hill 50/60lbs weight gain and battling hypo...and hair losss is terrible ! BUT I’m on day 15! Yay me and I have a second chance on life and I’m determined to live heathly and less plump! I have not cheated or swypo the first week I had bacon with sugar in the ingredients but not in the listing ! and the second week I took a big drink of coconut water a friend offered without looking at the ingredients. Other then those things I have been 100% compliant! Here goes my concern/question?! And yes I read the books and I’m all over whole30 social media. First- My NSVS have been no acid reflux, no feeling full for hours and hours on end after a meal. No belching and feeling big air pockets in my gut. Feeling like I wake up not so foggy. it used to take me more then half the day to “wake up” Now it’s by noon or sooner Sugar craving is diminishing. Now for the whoas me- I don’t have the tiger blood. I’m still fatigued, still not sleeping please someone help me fall asleep !!! Not much energy more then I had but not a enough to be substantial and I have not lost much of any weight ! (I got on the scale most of you did too! No judging and yes it is important just as much as the rest of the the Stuff is!) I’m only down 4lbs just looking for support and advise to put this into high gear! I want to achieve long term heath and goals along with motivational steppingstones along the way ! Is there something I’m doing wrong ? Or something I can improve ? Something to cut out and replace with a better option ? Needing whole30 support . Thanks in advance and why am I still craving cheese and bread! Lord help me ! I can be around chocolate cake, but don’t torture me with the dairy and grains!

    Hypothyroidism

    I'm wondering if anyone in this forum suffers from hypothyroidism and has had success with Whole30. I'm on day 16, yay! I haven't gotten my "tiger blood" yet and I haven't seen any real weight changes or changes to my body composition. What I have gotten is constipation! I was really weak for a while but now at least I'm able to make it through a fairly normal workout in the morning. I know a big part of this program is getting your body to rely on its fat stores for fuel instead of sugar and simple carbs but I'm wondering if my thyroid condition is slowing down my progress and rewards! I take synthroid everyday and I was wondering if there are any success stories out there from others with thyroid disease. It's seems so hard to move the needle...yes, I've gotten on the scale so done shame me I've started to be more mindful of calories too because it seems like maybe I'm eating too much. Today's food as an example: Breakfast Smoothie (post workout) Spinach and Kale, 1 banana and 2 strawberries, plus almond milk Lunch (mid-morning because I was hungry) leftover turkey chili, fried egg and half avocado, tea with almond milk Snack: apple with almond butter plus a handful of mixed nuts Dinner: 1 pepper stuffed with leftover turkey chili and chicken, 1/2 avocado drizzled with some Habanero Ranch dressing I haven't been able to drop the afternoon snacking...that is still a problem for me. Anyway, today I seriously considered quitting but I will not. I owe it to myself to finish the 30 days but I guess I'm writing on this forum to hear some success stories from women with thyroid issues because nothing seems to work for me...except Isagenix shakes, which worked for a while but who the heck wants to drink their food everyday forever? Not this lady!! And by "worked" I do mean weight loss...yes, I want a healthy gut but I also want to drop some inches. Right now my gut doesn't feel super healthy since I can't seem to go number 2 in a good way! Sorry for the TMI but it's like I don't have much there...I'm assuming because my body is using mostly everything I'm eating??? Would love some advice and success stories
  3. Anyone out here who has done Whole30 that has no thyroid? I have no thyroid due to thyroid cancer and curious about others like me that have done it and their results/follow-up. I finished mine 2 days ago. I lost 0 lbs. My brother did it with me and lost 25 lbs and my husband lost 15 lbs. I feel no different at all. Was hoping it would help with energy and digestive issues. If anything my digestive issues got worse and spent quality time on toilet. Need to further figure that out. I'm pretty in tune with my body. I know Whole30 is good. But what about for people like me? Does it tend to affect us differently? Maybe it takes longer? I'm on thyroid meds to keep my levels suppressed so cancer doesn't come back. My 1st cancer was at age of 23 and had partial thyroidectomy. It came back anyway 12 years later and so then I had the rest taken out. Gained about 50 lbs with each removal. I'd love to lose 120lbs. Currently 5'4" and 250 lbs. I'd pretty much been eating about 80% paleo before Whole30. I'll continue on with Whole30 and may cheat every now and then with something but just curious about how it went with others like me.
  4. I had Thyroid Cancer 30 years ago and had a total Thyroidectomy, so therefore totally rely on Synthroid for my thyroid hormone. I am on Day 12 of my first Whole30, and am losing weight that I do not need to lose. I have been concentrating on eating more and added additional fat and protein to correct this, but was just wondering if it is possible that some of the foods that I have eliminated may have been suppressing some Synthroid absorbtion. There seem to be a lot of things that affect Synthroid absorption that I have read about in the past. Is it possible that my Synthroid dose is now too high without the foods that might have been suppressing absorbtion? Anyone have a similar experience?
  5. Hi! I was wondering how people who have either eliminated their Hashi's symtpoms, or been able to reduce their synthroid dosage, were able to know that they should reduce/eliminate synthroid? Sorry if I missed a post on this already, I couldn't find one in the forum though. The reason I ask is that my doctor has directed me to continue taking my synthroid while doing my Whole30 (I'm doing it for 90 days this time though - after a by-the-book round of Whole30 earlier this year, my TSH levels doubled, so I felt like this time needed to be longer). I agree with my doctor that it makes sense for me to continue taking my synthroid. I personally get very tired, moody, and at times depressed when my T3/T4 levels are low; it would be way more difficult to stick with an eating regime if I'm super emotional and fatigued. However, I'm wondering HOW they'll be able to test if my thyroid is functioning properly, IF 90 days of Whole30 eating helps to heal my immune system enough? My doctor has made it clear that she will NOT recommend reducing or eliminating my dosage of synthroid without lab work to back it up (she's pretty skeptical of the Whole30 to help heal Hashimoto's. Actually, she doesn't even believe that there's any reason to diagnose Hashi's, as opposed to hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's after going to see a naturopath, who ordered blood work for the antibodies. My doctor does not believe in "holistic" methods, and won't work with the naturopath ). Have others seen their TSH levels drop right off? I'm on quite a low dosage of synthroid as it is (75mg/day) so I'm worried that my TSH levels won't lower enough to warrant a dosage decrease, even if my Thyroid starts functioning better. Have some possibly seen symptoms of hyperthyroidism that prompted a dosage change? Or, do most people just go off of it entirely and see what happens? I'm pretty reluctant to try this myself, as I feel so terrible when my levels aren't right. One of my secret wishes is that I'll be able to live a medication free life. Trying not to get my hopes up, but I have to admit that I want it desperately. Being 24 and told you need to take daily pills for the rest of your life, and there's nothing you can do about it, SUCKS
  6. I'm in tears, here, so please be gentle. I know weight loss isn't the main goal of the Whole30. I know this. I have NSVs a mile long. I'm beyond thrilled with my NSVs. I've been so thrilled with my NSVs that I didn't let my lack of weight loss bring me down. But my lack of weight loss getting really old, now, and I need some ideas or suggestions. I'm was going to post anonymously (but I guess I can't) because I am a huge supporter of Whole30 and if someone were to come across this post who knows me would think I have a beef with Whole30 after all. Which I don't. I recommend it to everyone and brag about it (and all of my NSVs all the time). I know there's gotta be something I'm still doing wrong but I just can't put a finger on it. I started my first Whole30 on 9/1/14. By the end of the 30 days, I felt so amazing I never wanted it to end. (No more numbness & tingling, no more foot drop, MS symptoms, skin cleared up, mood stability, no more headaches, etc ... just to name a FEW.) So I continued with Whole30. I relaxed a smidge on Thanksgiving day and off and on through the Christmas season. I wasn't feeling awful, but I wasn't feeling quite as good. So I started up again with a strict Whole30 on 1/1/15. My husband started his first at the same time. He wasn't feeling amazing by the end of 30, so we continued ... all the way through Lent. I was lax a bit in April and then got back on strict for May & June of last year. Lax a bit for vacation in July and then back on strict Whole30 from August - Thanksgiving of 2015. Started strict again on 1/1/16 and have stayed that way for most of the year. I would say I'm 100% strict for about 80% of that time and 80% strict for the other 20%. I never go back to gluten grains in those off moments and I try really hard to steer clear of dairy, soy, and refined or artificial sweeteners always. My latest strict Whole30 has been since August 1 to date. I think the first knot I got in my stomach recently was the week the kiddos went back to school. Two of the teachers had visibly lost weight. Both of them commented that all they had done was started walking 10,000 steps a day and it really help shed the pounds. I walk 10,000 steps a day! I won't go to bed unless I have at least 10,000 steps and at least 10 floors. I actually average around 12,500. I walk everywhere. I run for about 20 minutes about three times a week. I'm a busy & active mother. I eat a perfect Whole30 MOST of the time (and often in 30+ day spurts). I'm not obsessed with the scale. I don't even own one. But between doctor's visits, I've seen that I've barely lost 10 pounds in the past two years. I haven't lost any pants sizes, either. It just doesn't make sense. I eat two or three full meals a day. I try to eat in an 8 hour window. I have about a palm-sized amount of meat and fill the rest with veggies. I don't do too many of the starchy ones. I use coconut oil, olives & avocado for fats. I rarely snack. If I do, it's an occasional Larabar or handful of nuts or an apple. I've read the books cover to cover and I tell everyone about how amazing I feel. And I DO. I'm so happy to feel so amazing. But I just can't stand still being so heavy. It brings me to tears. It's about the only thing that saddens me once in a while. I have spiritually uplifting practices. I journal. I have an amazing & supportive husband. I'm busy and have much on my plate but I'm not stressed. I just want some ideas. Is there something through all of this that I'm still missing? Do I just need to accept that I was made to be 5'5' and 175#? Any input? Any support? Any advice? I truly appreciate it!
  7. I did the Whole30 eating lots of good cauliflower,cabbage,broccoli,spinach and kale and got more and more tired and cold. After I finished, I found out by accident that all those veg and more are goitrogenic vegetables -- they interfere with the thyroid so if you have low thyroid like I do and even if you are on medication for it, it, they can still make you hypothyroid. So now I am off whole30 I am feeling better. So be warned and look up goitrogenic online and find out what to avoid. I find that it makes the range of veg on Whole30 too limiting, so I am just not doing another.
  8. Hey there! I'm starting my first Whole30 March 30th. I have Hashimoto's and have eaten a paleo diet before, but I've strayed from it since I stopped dancing ballet professionally and became a little "freer" with my life. I don't eat gluten still and avoid sugar, but I am looking forward to the positive changes that will come with this challenge. For me my goals are to get control over some not so great eating habits and cravings--mainly sweets (paleo mug cakes, chia puddings, still healthy but in moderation) and snacking in the evening. This is more about the emotional journey than anything else--not looking to food for support or as a "reward" of sorts. Wish me luck!

    Sauerkraut Info

    How do I know if sauerkraut actually is the kind that contains probiotics. I bought a large thing of it from a local co-op thinking I was getting a deal. It says "cured" on the front of it, seems to be homemade. Coincidentally, the same day I saw a naturopath who suspected I might have hypo-thyroid. So you're supposed to stay away from fermented cabbage. Arghhh! I don't wanna waste it so I want to know if there's a way I can be sure this is actually pro-biotic before I continue to finish off the batch. I don't want to be eating it for nothing when I'm really not supposed to be.
  10. Yes, that's right. 150. I am 5' 9" and was 298 lbs. I just completed my first Whole30 and lost 26 lbs. and enough inches my clothes fall off me. (Didn't get a good measurement on Day 1) Sure, the weight loss is the exciting part. But I also threw away my thyroid medicine, I have boundless energy without my (former) 4-6 cups of coffee a day and my egg allergy is GONE! I had heard my sister talk about Whole 30, Paleo, grain-free, etc. for two years now, and finally decided to do it. I was able to stick to the plan through business travel and a two week vacation at my brother's house. After a few days in between the end of my original Whole30 and a few "off-road" items (I was on vacation!), my second Whole30 starts today from the comfort of my home. 124 lbs to go! I have never been more ready! I LOVE WHOLE30!
  11. Hi everyone, my apologies if these questions have been answered before - there's a lot of material here and I'm new! But anyway, a bit of background - I've had issues with "mystery aches", indigestion, headaches, nausea, low energy for several years...many of which have been improving since going 100% gluten free a month ago. My TSH level is subclinical (6) despite the other numbers being within range, and my doc doesn't want to put me on meds, thankfully. Unfortunately, he also thinks I should go on a vegan diet and reduce my cholesterol, despite it being within normal range. Anyway, I decided to completely ignore him and start a Whole30. It's day 13 and I'm really enjoying it! So far it's been great, very few issues, barely any cravings...despite this, I keep seeing stuff about an autoimmune protocol, and how eggs are inflammatory (is this true?). Based on my symptoms, am I a candidate for that protocol? I have no idea whether I actually have autoimmune disease, since I'm obviously gluten intolerant but not sure if I'm celiac. I've been eating eggs almost every day, plus nightshades like crazy, and spices. No problems at all, so is there something I should be looking for when I eat these foods? They're a big part of my Whole30 so I wonder if I should be concerned. Hopefully I have nothing to worry about, since I've already removed a lot of foods from my diet! Thanks

    Hypothyroidism

    I'm asking this question for my mom (promise!) who is seriously considering the Whole30 challenge. I just finished mine, and she was amazed at my results. I'm actually continuing with this lifestyle because I feel so amazing! Anyway, back to her... She has hypothyroidism, and she has been told the last 10+ years by her doctor that her thyroid basically doesn't function. He said she needs to keep taking a strong dose of Synthroid--I'm guessing to help prevent cancer?? She very recently had her thyroid levels checked, but she wants to do the Whole30 challenge. My question is: if she continues taking the same dose of her thyroid medication while on the challenge, will she be able to tell that it has helped when she goes back after the 30 days to get them checked again? She is really hoping to at least reduce the dose she has to take, but she's under the impression that she'll never get to get off of that high of a dose because of what the doctor has told her for so many years...

    acne and hair loss

    so ive pretty much completed my whole 60. im still experiencing acne like crazy! im also noticing my hair falling out more than usual. I have symptoms of pcos. im just wondering if anyone has done the autoimmune protocol and if it has helped with either acne or hair loss. I am eating enough. I lift weights about 4 times a week to gain weight, which I have been! I eat the whole 30 meal template four to five times a day, depending on if im still hungry. However, I still have acne and hair loss has gotten worse! Has anyone tried the autoimmune protocol for this and had any success with it? im losing hope:/
  14. Hi everyone! So I started my whole 30 back on March 9th, but I restarted 8 days later after I realized I had made some mistakes the first week - the sausage I bought had sugar, I was chewing gum, and then on the 17th (after 8 days) I was miserable and ate a bunch of sweetened coconut. So I restarted, and have been doing well ever since in terms of compliance. However, I'm having some issues that are troubling - first, I keep having mild headaches. Nothing too severe, but really annoying. Second, I am not sleeping well. I used to sleep amazingly well before the whole 30, but now although I appreciate the ability to get up early, I'm waking up at 4am and tossing and turning for two hours. Third, I don't think I have lost any weight. I know this isn't about weight loss, but that is a huge incentive for me to do this. I've also been having some digestive issues. I hate talking about that department, but before whole 30 it was like clockwork. It is driving me bananas to not know what's going on or when! A few sidenotes - I am hypthyroid, and I wonder if doing the whole 30 may have knocked my dosage of Armour out of whack? Also, I've noticed in the past 1-2 weeks I have been upping my fruit consumption. I'm going to cut that back. I also cut way back on eating nuts after reading the forum. But I wondered if the fruit may be causing some problems - I realize that it is triggering my need for sugar and want to fix that. Any advice would be really appreciated!!! Thank you!

    Thyroid removed

    Hi. I am doing my first whole30. I am on Day 4. I had my thyroid removed in Dec 2011 because of Hashimotos Thyroiditis. It had grown so large it was obstructing my airway. I have had difficulty regulating my TSH levels ever since. I decided to do Whole30 to see how my diet and nutrition might be affecting my med balance and how I felt. As part of my regularly scheduled follow up dates I saw my doc on Wednesday, day 1. I am currently taking 200 mcg of synthroid daily. My TSH level came back 7.33! I'm so frustrated. I know I've got more medical work to do with this. But, my question is should I keep going with the Whole30 or wait to their is more control of my TSH. Will I be able to feel, better, get more energy, and find out what foods cause a reaction for me? Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Dawn
  16. I'm in my second (back to back) Whole30 and am eating spinach almost daily, as well as kale, cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, etc. Recently the issue of goitrogens has come to my attention. A search on this site did not bring up any discussion of it, but I'm guessing this must be discussed from time to time. This is what I came across on another site: "Goitrogens are chemicals that prevent your intestines from absorbing iodine. Chemicals classified as goitrogenic may also inhibit your thyroid function directly by slowing the production of thyroid hormones. According to a 2002 article in the journal "Thyroid," foods high in goitrogens, such as raw spinach, can increase your risk of developing thyroid disease, but they have not been shown to directly cause it. Other risk factors include pregnancy, low iodine consumption and poor health."   17. Hi all, for the hypothyroid people out there, I am curious to know the effect Whole30 has had on you. I am on just a low dose of levothyroxine. It has helped my symptoms quite a lot and some others have disappeared since I started Whole30, such as dry skin/eyes. Overall I feel much better, aside from the past few days. I'm on Day 26 and the past few days I am feeling the fatigue and charlie horse-type leg cramps characteristic of more symptomatic times. One possible explanation I have considered is the timing of medication. I understand that you're supposed to take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This hasn't been a problem for me in the past because pre-whole30 I was not a breakfast eater. I have since gotten in the habit of eating first thing in the morning like you're supposed to, right after I take my medication - maybe it's affecting the absorption? Thyroid medication-takers, how does your medication fit into this picture? I am interested to hear your solutions.
  18. Hello folks, I really hope this doesn't sound like a moaning post, because it's not - I'm just trying to get some answers. To give you a quick(ish) background, I was diagnosed with Endometriois, Lipoedema and Thyrotoxicosis (all autoimmune diseases) in my early twenties. The Hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease) was horrendous, and I ended up having Neutropenia as well. After 5 bouts of thyrotixic episodes they told me I would either have to have my thyroid removed or I would have to destroy it through radiation. I didn't want either option but didn't have a choice, so I went for what I felt was the lesser of two evils and chose the radiation. My rationale was that there was a slim chance that a small amount of the thyroid would survive and would therefore be able to produce all the necessary hormones on its own. Unfortunately I was not so lucky so I now have Radioiodine induced Hypothyroidism for which I take a daily dose of thyroxine and have done so for the last five years. The more 'minor', but still troubling issues I have are psoriasis on my scalp, exercise induced asthma, mild eczema, IBS, as well as excessive chest/throat infections (5+ a year) and constant lethargy and exhaustion. I've had a binge eating disorder for most of my adult life and have abused my body by flipping between binging on every carb in sight followed by a rigid and extreme diets (juice fasting, veganism, raw veganism - you get the idea). As a result my weight has yo-yoed wildly up and down to the point where I have gained and lost 100lbs+ over and over again. Anyway in August last year I started yet another fad diet (called Lighterlife in the UK) which is an extremely low carb and low calorie diet that is a 100% meal replacement - yes, you don't eat any food. Healthy huh??? Anyway I lost 5st (70lbs) between August and the end of December but although I was loosing weight my health started to get worse and worse (nausea, vomiting, constipation - it was delightful.) I decided to stop the diet because even though I was loosing weight I was so sick, and I also started to eat meat again after being a vegetarian for the previous 7 years! I had gone veggie believing it was better for my health, but have never been more sickly, so figured that maybe I needed meat to be healthy again. Anyway after the fourth visit to my doctor in as many weeks, she diagnosed me with gluten and lactose intolerance. BEST THING EVER! I have been 100% gluten and lactose free from 15 January this year, and have been 95% Whole30 since. I started on the autoimmune protocol (no nightshades, eggs, tomatoes etc.) which I followed for the first 50 days or so and then slowly reintroduced eggs, tomatoes etc. As I said I am mostly Whole30 all the time, with the rare exception of a small glass of bubbly at a wedding, some dark 85% chocolate on occasion. It is difficult as I still suffer with my eating disorder so this is very typical of my 'restrictive' phase of my binge cycle. However, because I am eating low carb, and no sugar my cravings and compulsions seem to have almost gone. Many of my symptoms are hugely improved. No more vomitting or nausea. No more IBS (or very minimal discomfort), better quality sleep, better skin. I couldn't change this way of eating even if I wanted to as I feel so much more human, I wouldn't want to go back to feeling how I was before. However after 14 weeks of eating whole, fresh foods I am still struggling with the following; Lethargy/exhaustion - although I am feeling more rested and have made a real effort to get at least 7-8hrs sleep every night I am still feeling low on energy. I long to feel full of vitality but this hasn't happened yet. I must also add though that I am not getting out and moving my body much. Partly a combination of the exhaustion and some old sports injuries (knee, ankle and back), plus when I did kettlebell training recently it left me depleted for the full week following. I'm not quite sure what to do about this. Psoriasis - it has hugely improved, it is not as red or angry or anyway near as painful, but it has also not gone. Weight loss - I am still loosing but it has slowed down to a crawl, from about 14lbs per month (pre W30) to only 14lbs in the last four months since starting W30. I am not eating any starchy tubers or fruits, and very low carb with good quality grass fed meats and organic veg, nuts, coconut milk and oil. Whilst my focus has totally changed from being about weight loss to becoming healthy, loosing weight is part of that equation as I probably still have somewhere in the region of 40-50lbs to loose. Sore throats - whilst I have only had one throat/chest infection since I started this which is a big improvement for me, I often have a consistent although low-grade sore throat. I do take thyroxine and sertraline (anti depressant) along with vitamins (magnesium, cod liver oil, probiotics and glucosamine). It's hard to know if the vitamins make any difference as I started them at the same time as starting W30. If you managed to read through this whole post, well done!! Sorry that wasn't exactly quick or quick(ish)!! Anyway, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks CaveGirl
