    Constipated!

    I got a gastric sleeve 4 years ago. I got down to 165, but stress and old bored eating habits flared up and I was back to 198. I'm on day 18 of W30. But I am NOT regular. I have been constantly constipated through the last 2 weeks. Please help! What am I doing wrong?

    Day 10, second W30

    Hi all, I'm a new forum-er but not completely new to W30. I'm on Day 10 of my second W30. I'll cut to the chase...I know this is particularly common, but I'm looking for some relief here from some symptoms I'm having. Non-W30, I eat pretty paleo-ish + wine on the weekends. We have four young kids, I mean, come on. But I am SO bloated and constipated on day 10. I've only had one decent (complete) BM since starting this W30. Even my three year old said, "Mommy, you have a big tummy", and I'm a ladies size 4! Also had lots of dull headaches, body aches, feeling arthritis in my hands and sometimes knees. I took an epsom salt hot bath last night after a good run yesterday and today seems even worse, maybe more detox from the bath? I'm staying completely on plan, drinking lots of water (some of it sparkling), and coffee in the am. I do eat more Rx bars than I'd like to admit but as of today I'll do my best to cut those too. My job is on call and sometimes I do need to swing into somewhere quickly and pick up a Rx bar. (I help women have babies for a living- crazy schedule.) We eat eggs in ghee and sauerkraut for breakfast, a W30 slow cooker chicken meal for lunch, and a Territory Whole 30 meal we order for dinner. I have kombucha sometimes too. Anyways, any thoughts? I'm also taking a probiotic and went to take a digestive enzyme today but realized it had Xylitol in it so I'll have to go get a new brand... Am I allowed to do an enema? Not sure that would even work...
  3. Okay I have a confession to make. I loved doing my first round of Whole30 back in November. However, I had serious issues with my bowels that I think are starting to happen again. (Constipation, and hemorrhoids for the first time in my life) So before my first Whole30, I had regular, sturdy bowel movements. However, within a week or two of my first Whole30 they turned into pebbles and seriously have not changed back SINCE. I mean even after a month of eating grains, breads, beans, etc., my poops have not been the same! They remain to be pebble like. Sometimes they were more normal and solid one-poo-at-a-time but that was like 20% of the time. Now on this 3rd round of Whole30, I am on Day 6 and I have had bowel movements that are only HARD pebble-like (a month ago they were pebble like but easy to pass) and I am worried it will lead to hemorrhoids again which I obviously do not want! I have been drinking around 70oz of water daily. My weight is around 155lbs. My log is here to see I have read that probiotics can help with constipation, and I was wondering if they have worked for others? Or should I try changing some things in my diet first? Also, I am worried about laxatives and your body relying on something like that for normal bowel movements, are probiotics safer for you in the long Any insight would be wonderful!
  4. Hello, sorry to bring up the grossest part of our W30's, but I've got to ask. I'm Day 19, my energy feels good, by body feels good, my skin is clear, all those things are happening! I think I've got Tiger Blood! However, not Tiger-Tummy. I'm on Day 19, and I still deal with low appetite, gas, bloating, and constipation. I deal with gas/bloating before W30, but am never really constipated. I have been eating beautiful W30 meals, sometimes lack an appetite just cause of the effort that has to go into them, but I really want to get to the bottom of my digestive issues. I have no idea! Any help or input? Thanks!
  5. In need of some help! I have read through several forums already and I have done the things that most are recommending. Here is a little about my situation. We are on day 15 of our second round of whole30, and I have dealt with constipation chronically (on and off). I thought that this would help and the first round it actually didn't seem to be an issue. This time around is a entirely different situation; major constipation, bloating and a lot of gas (such a fun topic right?!). I had my gallbladder removed a few years ago (biggest regret). So I am unsure if that is the problem - just looking for some advice from anyone who maybe experiencing something similar. I am drinking plenty of water, taking magnesium supplement and a digestive enzyme. My energy level is great - but sleeping is on and off - mainly due to constipation. HELP!
  6. Hi Everyone, It has officially been one week since I completed my first Whole 30. I have already been gluten- and dairy-free for six years (I have Celiac Disease and I'm allergic to milk) so it wasn't that huge of an adjustment for me. However, I had been struggling with fatigue and a weak immune system, so I thought I would give Whole30 a shot. Within a week, I noticed the results I was hoping for: tons more energy, faster recovery from workouts, and just feeling a lot healthier and stronger. But there was one problem. I was constipated. Now I want to make one thing very clear: BEFORE the Whole 30, my digestion was amazing. I keep very strict gluten- and dairy-free, so I have had virtually zero stomach issues since I first went gluten-free in 2011. (The only time it acts up is when I accidentally eat gluten, which I definitely haven't done in over a year.) I expected it to get better as my body adjusted, and it did improve slightly, but even though I've been off the Whole 30 for a week now, my digestion is not nearly as good as it was before. So in conclusion: the Whole 30 gave me tons of energy, yet it's wrecked my digestive system. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knew why this was happening. Oh, and before you suggest digestive enzymes or other supplements--I will likely end up going that route, but I thought the point of the program was to get what we need from food, so I find it ironic that I wouldn't need help going to the bathroom before the Whole 30 but do now... Thanks!
  7. Hi, I've recently just completed the Whole 30, no cheating! Yeah!!! I feel good, am excersizing a lot more and my mood is better. However, the entire time I was on the diet, I ate nightshades ( potatoes, tomatoes, peppers,) in some form or another at every meal and have experienced bloating, constipation and terrible rosacea. Wine used to give me rosacea, so I stopped. Ofcourse, stopped drinking alcohol and was surprised to see it got so much worse. My question is, if this is an anti-inflammation diet, why are nightshades allowed? I've recently read that they are inflammation inducing. Side question- caffeine is known to raise cortisol, the stress hormone which can cause belly fat. Why is that allowed on the diet? Thanks
  8. Hey all, I’m on day 21 of Whole 30 and struggling with a few issues. Background: I’ve had horrible constipation issues since my 20 month old was 1 month old. My midwives had me taking 4-5 calcium/magnesium supplements per day that were giving me very soft/loose stools all through pregnancy. I stopped them when my daughter was 1 month old because I feared calcium supplementation would throw off other vitamins/minerals in my body. (Lots of info online about it, but I don’t have specific links.) When I stopped taking them, I started experiencing horrible constipation. I just had zero urge to go whatsoever. When I would finally go, the stools were huge and hard. They tore me open and brought me to tears. 3 months later I cut out dairy with no change. About 7 months after that I went paleo with very minimal improvement. In December I completely let loose and was eating anything and everything with no significant reaction to anything. I’ve been Paleo for about 9 months now (aside from the December mayhem) and this is my first whole30. I wasn’t getting any relief about 2 weeks in, so I started taking alcohol free Swedish bitters, adding sauerkraut to my diet (about 1/4c throughout the day) and a probiotic supplement at night. I drink kombucha but I worry about the sugar dragon so only once in a while right now. I also take magnesium malate during the day and magnesium glycinate at night along with triphala powder. I’m still not going regularly but when I do go, the stools are difficult to pass and “sandy,” like lots of small particles floating around that do not look like undigested food. I also have unbearably foul gas in the afternoon but mostly in the evening. It seriously could clear a neighborhood. I wasn’t having this gas before whole30. Im also ridiculously exhausted. I stay home with my child and do childcare and there are times when all I can do is lay on the couch. Walking up the stairs is impossible. Not always though, sometimes I get bursts of energy that I can’t explain or connect to any certain food or meal. I am 5’5 and 117 lbs. I have pretty small hands (1”x3”x4”) and I do my best to follow the meal template but I’m wondering if I need to add or subtract something. I’m also still nursing my 20 month old about 3-4 times per day and all through the night. I do maybe 20 minutes of cardio exercise 4 days a week and although I said above sometimes I can’t get off the couch, I am far from sedentary due to having to look after the children. I’ve lowered my fodmap intake but not completely eliminated. Here is a typical day: breakfast (7am): 3 eggs, 3/4c hash browns, 1c kale all cooked in ghee lunch (11am): 1 can of salmon mixed with mayo and herbs, mixed greens (~4c), fried plantain lunch (2pm): 1 chicken breast, 1c potatoes, 1c kale (potatoes and kale cooked in ghee or coconut oil) Dinner (6pm): 2 slices of meatloaf, 1.5c chard, 1.5c roasted beets (again all cooked in ghee or coconut oil) i go to bed at 10 and wake up at 6:30 or 7 every day (though sleep is interrupted due to nursing) I use at least 2T of cooking oil at every meal but I don’t add any additional fat. My meals often seem pretty heavy and oily. I usually have a healthy appetite before each meal, but I’m not starving between or anything. I’ve read about enzymes and hcl but hesitant to use them because I know your body can stop making them and that concerns me. If anyone has any other insight I would be so appreciative!!
  9. I'm currently at the end of Day 12 of Whole30 and have been constipated for days. Let it be known that I'm not a huge eater, but am eating 3 meals a day unlike in the past, so that should definitely count for something! I'm wondering if it's the foods I'm eating, or just my body's reaction to this new regime. In any case, would like some feedback on whether this will pass, or if I need to alter something. Admittedly, I'm not eating many leafy greens as my veggies of choice are: potatoes, root vegetables, raw carrots, tomatoes and celery and lots of avocados. Is how quickly you chew food a factor in this? My legs have also felt like I'm walking in cement for the past few days. Today they're getting better. Thank you!
  10. hello: I am on my day 20 of the program and things are going well. at the start of the program i used more fruits and raw veggies that exacerbated my IBS. however i was able to address it with consuming less fruit, well cooked veggies and some supplements that i would like to get feedback on. for years i have been using supplements for bowel movement, past couple of years - Cleanse More. I have been suffering with the chronic constipation(more than 25 years) and this supplement helped. thought some mornings i notice i have very loose stool. i also started taking taking Ultimate Flora probiotics by Renew Life to help elevate IBS and address loose stool. i was wondering if taking these are acceptable on the program, as well as what others on the program use, if any at all and what general guideline is for people on the program with chronic constipation. thanks!
  11. Lost need for BP med in 1st 30 days of whole30. Stayed on program 60 days then stopped it and ate corn, ice cream, cheese, bread, pizza, sweet deserts, cream in coffee over weeks and blood pressure rose to require med again, belly re-expanded, became short of breath. Restarted in earnest 2 weeks ago. BP falling & bowels returning to functional. This time I really notice a feeling of well being. Holistic pharmacist I know says hypertension is an inflammatory condition.
  12. Hello, I'm looking for some help with my Whole30. I am a 27 year old female trying the program out for the first time after hearing excellent reviews from co-workers. I bought the book and was really excited and motivated to get my Whole30 started. I was aiming at losing some weight (I probably had ~5 pounds to lose), to improve sleep, to improve mood (specifically, to be less fatigues and unmotivated by 2pm in the work day), and to help with swelling in my lower legs (called panniculitis). I had pretty high hopes after hearing about the program and reading the first few chapters of the book. I'm currently on day 22 and I'd go as far to say that it's pretty much a disaster. I'll back up and provide some more detail. The first week was great! I felt excited, motivated, energized, and my pants were less tight! Around week 2 I started noticing some undesirable side effects. My acne (which isn't really acne... I usually get 2-3 pimples per month) was TERRIBLE. My skin was extremely oily and broken out all over. They ranged from small, hard pimples on my cheeks and forehead, to under the skin painful welts on my chin. I read on this forum that nuts could be doing this. So I decreased my nuts. I will mention that I am a pescitarian, so I don't eat poultry/beef/pork. I do eat fish, seafood, eggs, and dairy [when not on the Whole30]. So I cut out nuts and stuck with my other protein sources. I also started noticing my mood getting worse (sad, angry for no reason, unmotivated). So for this, I read on here to increase my fruit and starchy food...I ate more starches and fruit daily. My side effects from week 3 up to now is what motivated to seek help here. I am depressed, unmotivated, and a completely different person for the worse. I am SO agitated all the time (when people talk to me, I was to cry and/or scream), I'm tired beyond belief, the acne has not changed at all, I have a hard time staying asleep all night, and I haven't seen any improvements in my lower leg swelling. Oh and to top it off, I'm now experience bloating, constipation, and terrible gas (sorry, TMI) that I never experienced before my Whole30. Again, I've looked up most of these symptoms on here and I got info on the depression side; eat more starchy foods and fat...but I already am. As for the gastrointestinal issues, I'm at a loss; seems like the Whole30 foods are causing me issues that other people eliminate during their Whole30. With only 8 days left to go, I'm seriously considering blowing it off. For whatever reason, the Whole30 isn't working with my body.Here is a sample meal plan to help guide any advise that you may have. I really appreciate it. Breakfast - 2 eggs fried in EVOO, homemade hash browns with onions, and half an avocado with S&P (I'll throw in some fresh berries if I still feel hungry) Lunch - baked sweet potato, sautéed kale, and a fruit (usually an apple or banana) Dinner - grilled salmon, lemon garlic grilled shrimp, and roasted veggies with EVOO & balsamic Thank you in advance, I really appreciate any help
