  1. My wife and I did the Whole30 in September with no issues, but started to get bad eczema within 48 of finishing. She's 40 years old and the eczema started on one eyelid as a red rash and has progressively gotten worse, with both eyes lids red, puffy and itchy (as well as the areas around her eyes). She's tried eliminating gluten, alcohol and dairy and things seem to get marginally better (the redness turns to almost flaky, dry skin), but it continues to come back and has become a real issue. I've seen some posts about similar issues related to the Whole30, and would love to know if anyone else has been able to pinpoint causes or solutions. The fact that this was triggered for the first time in her life immediately following the Whole30 is hard to understand. We're trying to figure out if the shift for 30 days triggered a food allergy, or some sort of bacterial change in her stomach that we need to reset. She did have more fermented foods on the Whole 30 (sugar free Kombucha, Kimchi; curious if you can have some type of probiotic overload). She has started a food journal but we haven't gotten close to pinpointing the cause. It does seem that red wine and sugary foods trigger it more quickly than others. She has also had less frequent bowel movements during and after the Whole30. She's currently trying to eat gluten free with lots of fruits, chicken/fish, veggies, eggs, nuts, etc (although we saw that eggs and nuts could be triggers). Some things we read seemed to point to the Whole30 triggering a Histamine intolerance but that would involve severe and debilitating diet changes so we are hoping to identify someone who has solved this and reverted it. Thank you for any help or pointers!
  2. Hey there! My name is Maura Beaver and I am starting on Monday, July 9th! This will be my first round of Whole30, and this type of program is so new to me. Recently, I have gained a decent bit of weight and I have been having some major allergy issues. I wake up with puffy eyes and lips and I'm breaking out in hives and eczema. We have tried patch testing at the allergist and concluded I'm at least allergic to nickel and gold. I feel like that's not the only issue because I haven't seen much of a change for the better. Now I'm considering the idea it might be food related. Also, let it be known I'm getting married at the end of October and would really like to get this taken care of! If you have any thoughts relating to the allergy topic or just some words of advice about the program, I would love to hear them. I LOVE to cook, so I don't think that will be hard to get used to. I do love cheese and bread - that will be hard to get used to... Thanks in advance, and I hope the program is going well for all of you! Maura
  3. I'm starting Whole30 on Monday and am hoping for great things. I am doing this program after numerous suggestions from my doctors and my trainer, but mostly because I seem to find myself with some new ailment almost weekly now. And all of my ailments seem to have inflammation at the root, so time to figure out the culprit and put a stop to feeling like I'm falling apart. On a personal (and vain) level, I hope to lose a few pounds (ending back up at a size 4), have clear skin (goodbye eczema and acne that has plagued me my whole life), and get off my infusions for moderate Crohn's for good. I've also let my diet slide to the point where a meal doesn't feel complete until I eat dessert...and I don't normally have a sweet tooth. THAT bad habit needs to be nipped in the bud ASAP. Today I spent the evening reading through the website, saving resource documents, signing up for the meal plan and email help. Tomorrow will be meal planning, grocery shopping/purge, and getting mentally prepared. Then I'm off to the races. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy for doing this during the holidays, but I think this timing is easier because I tend to be more focused in the winter without festivals, street fairs, camping, margaritas on patios, long days of sunlight, and all of the other activities that can throw me off. Does anyone else agree with me? In any case, I hate the grocery store, can't cook, and have a long and slightly uncomfortable love affair with fast food. On top of that, I have a boyfriend who doesn't really support my goals (combination of him feeling threatened by change and it forcing him to look at his bad habits) so I will have to battle my demons and side step his landmines and traps. This is going to be a challenge. Any advice on avoiding temptation by your significant other would be much appreciated.
  4. Hello! I'm hoping to find some suggestions/wisdom for a surprising eczema occurrence in the midst of my whole30. On Day 18 of my whole30 I developed an eczema flare-up near my mouth and on my hand. I’ve had eczema like this in the past, but hadn’t had an occurrence in over a year and it was never this bad (in the past it was only on my forehead). I was surprised to see it pop up in the midst of the whole30 and am baffled as to why it occurred now, seemingly out of nowhere when I hadn’t had an occurrence in so long. I have 2 main theories, and am interested in any other ideas/input. 1. Is this some sort of die-off / adjustment period from now being completely grain free? (I rarely had dairy anyway coming into this so I don’t think its from removal of dairy) 2. Am I reacting from an approved whole30 food that I’m actually sensitive to? For example, I’ve always eaten eggs and nuts, but now I’m eating them more often, could the increase in these foods be triggering my eczema? Any advice as to what may be the issue here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  5. History first. I've done 2 whole 30's previously and have eaten mostly paleo for 4-5 years now. I'll never go back. Although it runs in my family, I've only struggled with eczema ever since having PUPPS with our daughter during pregnancy. It's a horrible itchy rash. I was able to help it with some liver-supporting supplements and other things. Then I developed a really bad eczema patch on both inner thighs about 6-7 months pp. Open skin, horrific itching, etc. That finally cleared up with some stress/lifestyle modifications and more/different supplements to support my thyroid and liver. A year or so later in the clear (for eczema, as long as I apply frankincense and other oils daily and eat gluten/dairy free), I wanted to do another W30 to start off my next expected pregnancy on the right foot. Two days after I ovulated, (and yes, got pregnant, eee!) a small patch of eczema showed up on my neck. The next 10 days it got worse and worse to where it was an open, oozing wound, seeming infected. I managed to get it under control a little and pinpointed that almonds/almond butter and bacon brings out the red, puffy, itchiness. Anyway, I'm almost done with the January whole 30. 2 weeks pregnant. My question is this, given my history, should I try to keep going until it clears? I'm really struggling this time around with giving up my swypo and missing out on many social situations because of needing to bring food, etc. I'm also worried that it won't clear.. and I won't be able to keep going as I head into nausea/morning sickness/food aversions in the next couple weeks. So I could keep going, but my attitude towards the program is poor right now because despite several NSV, it has made my eczema flare up horribly this and last time I did the W30. Pics are the first time I noticed it (day 15/16), 2 days later, and then about a week later. It has calmed since then a little. Thoughts please!
  6. Hi! I am starting day 14 a bit frustrated. I subscribed to the Real Plans meal plan, because I'm mostly pescatarian and I knew that I wouldn't be able to stomach all the meat in the "average" whole 30 recipes. I've followed the meal plan almost exactly, except that time has required me to sub in meals of chopped raw vegetables and boiled eggs 3 times. (I don't love the plan, btw, but that's another topic). I have felt normal/fine the entire time. Diet hasn't been tricky because I'm used to cooking all of my meals and, despite my holiday behavior, I generally eat food that makes me feel good which sometimes means restrictions on what I'd enjoy eating. My workouts have been basically the same as always, except for a bit of joint pain the past couple days that I'm not used to. I started this to reset myself after an overindulgent holiday season and more importantly to try to get to the bottom of my eczema/psoriasis. I was born with it, but went roughly 20 years without having it. For the past 3+ years I have periods of it being severe on my hands. I thought the winter would be a good time to try Whole30 to get rid of it, because it's generally not as bad in the cold weather months, and I knew that a flare-up could occur during the early "detox" phase. I've tried AIP, Paleo, Vegan and Keto diets (I think that's all of them) in the past to get rid of this and none of them have done the trick. So here's where I am: Eczema on hands is roughly 20% worse than it would normally be in January I have not-terrible eczema on parts of my body that haven't been affected for years (scalp, behind knees, face) Lots of energy (but this is normal for me on my usual diet, just kinda got sluggish over the cookie-laden holidays) LOTS of weight gain. Like a lot. Like my period pants are tight. This concerns me, because it's hard for me to lose weight, so I normally just don't gain it through basic, sane, diverse, thoughtful eating and exercise. No real appetite or cravings. Normal for me when I'm not eating processed sugar. My digestion, which is normally great (I eat fermented vegetables daily), was a bit off from days 5-8 but is back to normal. I'm kind of at the point where I feel like this probably isn't for me, but I'm willing to hold out until day 30. I am starting to get a little stressed because I have an important conference a week after Day 30 and I would really prefer not to have a muffin top pouring out of my pants and skin flaking all over people while I'm there. I'm guessing the people in my situation have moved on to greener pastures and aren't lurking in these forums, but if anyone here has had a similar experience and made it through, I'd love to know about it. Thank you for any help you can offer.
  7. I was in a bad place when I started the Whole 30. It was 8 months after giving birth to my second child. I was still 22 lbs overweight despite working out several times a week and choosing “healthy” foods (not much meat, lots of grains and beans). I ate zero packaged junk food, but I had delicious high quality pastries a couple times a week and thought nothing of it. Oh, and I regularly had 2-3 glasses of wine per night just to “wind down.” My childhood asthma had returned. My skin was on a hormonal rollercoaster; besides breakouts I had eczema and keratosis pilaris (chicken skin bumps on back of my arms). I was always hungry and always eating. I tried calorie counting. I tried Weight Watchers when the calorie counting got demoralizing. I tried weighing all my food when WW didn’t work. All that micromanaging sucked the joy out of living, and I still couldn’t lose the weight. My mantra was that I deserved that pastry/glass of wine/bowl of tortilla chips because I had been “so good” all day. I’d pile on the calories after the kids were in bed. But then I simply turned a corner, and decided that I deserved to feel healthy, to feel like I did before my pregnancy. Heck, why not feel even better than that? So I decided to give W30 a try. What did I have to lose? Which begs the question, 30 days later, what did I lose? As it turns out I lost ZERO pounds. 30 days of total compliance, and I weigh exactly the same. Yep, I’m one of those. (At this moment in time, while nursing, anyway.) I gave myself an hour or so to feel really down about it. But then I took at the NSVs I drafted yesterday before I weighed in. I weigh the same, but I’m not the same. I GAINED: - the ability to breathe freely without asthma. This is truly priceless. I have not touched my inhalers in one month. - a peaceful relationship with food. I’m not battling it any longer. I know what makes me feel good. And once I finish the reintros I’ll know what doesn’t! - knowledge and acceptance. I know my body is holding on to this weight because it needs it for nursing. Sure, I can tweak things here or there, but by and large I’ve proved to myself that it just doesn’t want to let go of it right now. I’m going to have to be patient. I am ready to stop nursing for a variety of reasons, but it may take a while for my hormones to catch up. So, what next? I’m going to do reintroductions to see which food group(s) were exacerbating the asthma. I'll have the occasional glass of wine over the next week or so (we’re traveling). I also had bloodwork done on Day 25. In two weeks I will meet with my chiropractor who has nutritional training to review that. Perhaps there are hormonal factors at play that can be worked on. Once I know the bloodwork results, I’ll decide whether to jump into another Whole30. For now, I will stay compliant while at home, avoid whatever it is that’s causing the asthma even when out, and have the occasional glass of wine. But mostly, I am going to enjoy the calm Whole30 has brought to my life and give my body some grace. Read on for details if you’d like. As always, I’m open to any feedback on how to move forward. These forums were an amazing resource through the whole process. NSVs: - Asthma GONE without the use of steroid inhalers - Skin clearer - Nails growing like crazy - Eczema gone - Keratosis pilaris (chicken skin on arms) drastically reduced - On the rare occasions where my alarm goes off before the kids are up, I only press snooze once instead of three or four times - I can see my waist again! hallelujah! - Clothes fit better and I can get into some I couldn’t a month ago - Even energy all day long - More time between meals means more efficient work - Free from cravings. I no longer struggle with food choices. - Not tempted to eat after dinner - I don’t “need” wine to relax anymore - I don’t need to weigh myself every day as I used to What went well: - I rocked it with the homemade condiments: mayo, ketchup, ranch dip and Nom Nom Paleo’s “magic mushroom” seasoning were my favorites - Egg bakes saved my bacon for breakfast - such a time saver, and great to start the day without having to “think” about the meal - Kombucha was the perfect treat instead of wine/beer/cocktails - I made it through Easter with flying colors - I cooked many compliant meals for my extended family (we’re talking large groups of 12-20 people, and they all loved them) - I did NOT evangelize to my family, which is something I’d done in the past, but tried to set a quiet example What could have gone better: - I ate more frequently and had more fruit and potatoes than necessary in the beginning. I was still breastfeeding heavily then (I’m down to one nursing session a day now), so I was nervous about my supply and likely overdid it. All compliant, so no harm done, but once I got down to 3 (large, by my previous standards) meals per day, which was about two weeks in, I felt much better. - Some days I ate 1/2 an avocado at every meal. Maybe I need to dial that back to 1/3. - Still having some skin breakouts but then again I’m in a transitional place hormonally as I slowly stop breastfeeding - Sleep is not a long or solid as I would like, mostly due to kids waking me up - if fact, SLEEP could be the largest factor in the weight hanging on. - I need to drink more water. 62 oz/day isn’t cutting it. What I’ll do in the future, to keep doing better: - Make fruit and potatoes a once a day thing, not an every meal thing - Aim to be in bed by 8 and asleep by 9 - Read for 1hr before bed instead of watching tv - Dial coffee back to one cup per day, replace second cup with matcha - Aim to drink 3 32-oz bottle of water/day - Keep working with my preschooler on not waking us at night when he goes to the bathroom in the middle of the night. He can do it, but it helps when we prep him by talking about it before bedtime. - Let my husband take over the 5:30 feedings when he is home so I can sleep longer - Take measurements to track inches lost, not just weight - Stay on whole 30 at home. I rarely eat out (maybe once a week) so that would be a pretty complaint lifestyle, and I find it easy to do at home. - I won’t go back to having stevia in my coffee. That was the hardest thing to give up, and I think it was triggering a cycle of sugar cravings. In fact I may even give up my almond milk. I think I’m ready to enjoy coffee black, and I like the simplicity of that.
  8. One of the main reasons I started the Whole30 was to figure out what was causing the eczema on my torso and back, but for the most part, the rashes are still there. I've seen a lot of people report healthy, glowing skin halfway through their Whole30, but—while my skin was never really in bad shape to begin with (except for the eczema)—I don't think it's really improved at all. In addition, I'm still having trouble dragging myself out of bed in the mornings, and I haven't been able to shake the 3:00pm fog at work. For reference, a typical day looks something like this: Breakfast: Two egg frittata muffin thingies with salt, pepper, paprika, onion, spinach, mushrooms and roasted red peppers; one banana; a mug of green tea. Lunch: Chicken tikka masala (made with crushed tomatoes, coconut milk, spices and veggies); cauliflower rice. Dinner: Spaghetti squash and meat (ground beef) sauce with carrots, peppers and spinach. I should note that—as far as I know—I haven't had a single slip. However, I have had to eat out a couple of times this month, and I'm paranoid that although I made sure to ask all the right questions, I may have been given the wrong information and there may have been something in my food that shouldn't have been there. I don't know this for sure, though. Additionally, a couple of weeks ago I started taking digestive enzymes with every meal, and I've started trying to incorporate a teaspoon or two of Bubbie's sauerkraut every day. I should probably also be drinking more water than I am. Does anyone else with skin issues/grogginess issues—or anyone at all—have any input as to what could be the culprit?
  9. Hi all! I'm Karen, and this is my fifth day on Whole30. I am 56 years old, terribly overweight, battling chronic health problems, and setting myself up for more. I have thoroughly enjoyed my food and Diet Coke addictions, thank you, but I know I have to put them behind me and change my way of living, if I have any hope of a full and healthy life. I learned about Whole30 from a friend, and it just made so much sense. So far, so good! I started tapering off the Diet Coke a few days early, and that helped the adjustment. The caffeine withdrawal headaches are pretty much gone (though I still crave it like crazy), and the only withdrawal symptom I'm having right now is fatigue. Feeling weak. I've been very strict with the rules, and plan to continue with that. Though I'm joining this forum a bit late, I look forward to benefiting from the other members' wisdom and experience. My first goal is to reset my psychological relationship (addiction) with food. I have seriously considered gastric bypass surgery, but decided against it because of the rigid diet I would have to follow for the rest of my life. Why would I be able to follow such a strict regimen for the rest of my life, when I can't stay on Weight Watchers for more than a couple of months? My obesity is just a symptom, and I need to get at the underlying causes. I also hope to alleviate some other health problems, both mental and physical. These include depression, ADD, eczema, chronic inflammation, swelling and pain in my joints and muscles, blood sugar fluctuations (pre-diabetic), overwhelming fatigue, being very slow to heal, and other fun indignities which shall remain under the category of TMI (too much information). I'm very pleased that I'm doing so well so far, as self-discipline has never been my strong suit. And I'm not hungry at all! Not even cranky! (Yet.) Getting to Day 30, even if I were to have no other benefits, would prove to myself that I am in control of what I put in my mouth. Wish me luck!

    June 1, 2015 Start Date

    Hi, I'm Lisa.....and I'm miserable. I looked at Whole30 a while ago...and when i saw no gluten and no sugar? Well....I thought "I can't do that" and I kept on keeping on. Then...my mild dry itchy patches of skin became aggravated...then blistered and sooo itchy. One small patch on my arm morphed into more patches on my neck, my face....finally in my ears! Miserable...i went to the doctor. I've been to the doctor for help with inability to lose weight...excessive periods....anxiety...asthma....diverticulitis... I always hear "Lose weight". I tried. I went to Weight Watchers. I tried Jenny Craig. I did a medically supervised fast. I'd lose about 20 pounds....and it would stop. For weeks, no loss or it would start coming back. They said I wasn't trying hard enough. They had no idea how hard I tried. i gave up on losing weight. I'm now 51-years-old, 5 feet tall and weigh my highest ever - 255. i figured I'd just be fat. i couldn't bear trying any more. Then...the skin thing got worse. A lot worse. My arms, my face, my neck....I look like I have some horrible disease - people stare sometimes and it's embarrassing. I went to a dermatologist who biopsied it and said "you have dermatitis - use this steroid ointment, $200 please". I asked what was causing this...."oh...you have really dry skin". I said, well, I've noticed when I give up gluten, it gets better. "oh, well, you had skin testing done, you aren't allergic to any foods..." and that was the end of her interest. I quit gluten and eggs earlier in the month - and things did start to improve dramatically. I could wear makeup again! I wasn't scrathing constantly. Then last week, a trip across the country and I ate what I wanted for four days. A week later...I'm rashed out like crazy, clawing at my skin in my sleep....and miserable. I never thought I could have my coffee black (french vanilla creamer addict) and no sugar...at all? Not happening. Well...it's happening. i can't live like this any more. So...I'm doing it. June 1. I'm sorta terrified to be honest, but I'm doing it!
  11. Hi, I've done the whole30 two times before and was happy with how I felt. My eating habits have gone the wrong way since but for some reason I have suddenly developed a pretty bad case of eczema in my neck and creeping up in my face, which totally freaks me out. I have hayfever as well but I haven't had eczema for 30 years. It just suddenly came back. I remember 30 years ago it also crept up to my face which got me in a panic and I resorted to very clean eating. It disappeared within two weeks and never came back until now. Needless to say I cleaned up my food intake straight away but not sure if it is going to be as easy this time around. It feels bad. I've been reading a few reports on the forum as to the eczema, but I am wondering if anyone has good experience with this kind of eczema disappearing on the whole30? I so hope it will as I fear I won't be able to get out of the house if this continues (it looks terrible, even though I avoid scratching as much as I can) I hope someone can give me some positive news.... Kind of desperate! Simone
  12. I finished my W30 AIP last week (2nd March); while I was on it my eczema pretty much cleared up. I still had itchy skin but most of the redness disappeared from my arms & face. I started with my reintroductions and it has all gone horribly wrong already; I need some advice on how to continue. I started off with reintroducing dairy, only a small amount of steamed milk in my morning coffee. I don't ever drink milk straight up and I haven't felt like eating cheese or any other dairy product yet. There was no real difference in my skin so yesterday I ate eggs, my eczema has flared up so badly I have it in places I have never had it before like my back and neck. I itch like mad and am generally very unhappy with it. I've done some reading around the forum and have read that for some people dairy reactions can take up to a couple of weeks to manifest as eczema. So now I have no idea if it was a delayed reaction to the small amount of milk or an almost immediate reaction to the eggs. How can I figure this out? Do I have to go back on AIP till my skin clears up again then do a slower reintroduction? Any advice is greatly appreciated before I scratch myself into oblivion.

    Day 1 = March 21

    Hi Everyone! I've read the book and will be starting my Whole30 today. The change of season from winter to spring felt like the perfect time to start! I'm looking forward to having a better relationship with food and better health over all. Specifically, I have eczema and this winter has been particularly tough for my skin... I can't wait to see how these next 30 days will effect my skin for the better. I love cooking and am looking forward to trying some new whole30 recipes. I am also starting the book "Cooked" by Michael Pollan today... which I think will help me keep me in the right frame of mind while starting the program. Looking forward to connecting with some of you over these 30 days!

    Skin Issues

    Hello all! Writing to you with some serious frustration... I started my Whole30 Journey on January 1, 2015. It has been amazing. I feel great and look even better (Seriously, I lost 20 pounds! Woot woot!). But... I'm mad because I've never had skin issues in the past and now, I AM! UGH! My husband and I cheated on SuperBowl Sunday (GO HAWKS!) and ate corn chips, gluten free pizza, mozerella, and salami and pepperoni. We also had a small bit of chocolate. Well, on February 2, I went right back to Whole30... but noticed that I had a singular little itchy spot (eczema looking) forming on the upper portion of my left thigh. I didn't think much of it until later on mid-February the one spot got worse and it now spread from just my upper left thigh to mid back and dispersed randomly over my trunk/core. I have to admit that I have slipped a few times in Febuary but relatively for the most part ate Whole30. I'm frustrated because I don't know if this is food related (reintroduction?) or maybe I'm eating in excess of something I wasn't before (almond butter?). If I could count the number of spots I have now, I'd say there's 30 plus. Look like eczema, itch, and won't go away with hydrocortisone or essential oils. I'm back to strict Whole30 to see if this is food related... But wanted to see what you guys thought? Anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Thank you in advance! <3 -Honey
  15. Hello folks, I really hope this doesn't sound like a moaning post, because it's not - I'm just trying to get some answers. To give you a quick(ish) background, I was diagnosed with Endometriois, Lipoedema and Thyrotoxicosis (all autoimmune diseases) in my early twenties. The Hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease) was horrendous, and I ended up having Neutropenia as well. After 5 bouts of thyrotixic episodes they told me I would either have to have my thyroid removed or I would have to destroy it through radiation. I didn't want either option but didn't have a choice, so I went for what I felt was the lesser of two evils and chose the radiation. My rationale was that there was a slim chance that a small amount of the thyroid would survive and would therefore be able to produce all the necessary hormones on its own. Unfortunately I was not so lucky so I now have Radioiodine induced Hypothyroidism for which I take a daily dose of thyroxine and have done so for the last five years. The more 'minor', but still troubling issues I have are psoriasis on my scalp, exercise induced asthma, mild eczema, IBS, as well as excessive chest/throat infections (5+ a year) and constant lethargy and exhaustion. I've had a binge eating disorder for most of my adult life and have abused my body by flipping between binging on every carb in sight followed by a rigid and extreme diets (juice fasting, veganism, raw veganism - you get the idea). As a result my weight has yo-yoed wildly up and down to the point where I have gained and lost 100lbs+ over and over again. Anyway in August last year I started yet another fad diet (called Lighterlife in the UK) which is an extremely low carb and low calorie diet that is a 100% meal replacement - yes, you don't eat any food. Healthy huh??? Anyway I lost 5st (70lbs) between August and the end of December but although I was loosing weight my health started to get worse and worse (nausea, vomiting, constipation - it was delightful.) I decided to stop the diet because even though I was loosing weight I was so sick, and I also started to eat meat again after being a vegetarian for the previous 7 years! I had gone veggie believing it was better for my health, but have never been more sickly, so figured that maybe I needed meat to be healthy again. Anyway after the fourth visit to my doctor in as many weeks, she diagnosed me with gluten and lactose intolerance. BEST THING EVER! I have been 100% gluten and lactose free from 15 January this year, and have been 95% Whole30 since. I started on the autoimmune protocol (no nightshades, eggs, tomatoes etc.) which I followed for the first 50 days or so and then slowly reintroduced eggs, tomatoes etc. As I said I am mostly Whole30 all the time, with the rare exception of a small glass of bubbly at a wedding, some dark 85% chocolate on occasion. It is difficult as I still suffer with my eating disorder so this is very typical of my 'restrictive' phase of my binge cycle. However, because I am eating low carb, and no sugar my cravings and compulsions seem to have almost gone. Many of my symptoms are hugely improved. No more vomitting or nausea. No more IBS (or very minimal discomfort), better quality sleep, better skin. I couldn't change this way of eating even if I wanted to as I feel so much more human, I wouldn't want to go back to feeling how I was before. However after 14 weeks of eating whole, fresh foods I am still struggling with the following; Lethargy/exhaustion - although I am feeling more rested and have made a real effort to get at least 7-8hrs sleep every night I am still feeling low on energy. I long to feel full of vitality but this hasn't happened yet. I must also add though that I am not getting out and moving my body much. Partly a combination of the exhaustion and some old sports injuries (knee, ankle and back), plus when I did kettlebell training recently it left me depleted for the full week following. I'm not quite sure what to do about this. Psoriasis - it has hugely improved, it is not as red or angry or anyway near as painful, but it has also not gone. Weight loss - I am still loosing but it has slowed down to a crawl, from about 14lbs per month (pre W30) to only 14lbs in the last four months since starting W30. I am not eating any starchy tubers or fruits, and very low carb with good quality grass fed meats and organic veg, nuts, coconut milk and oil. Whilst my focus has totally changed from being about weight loss to becoming healthy, loosing weight is part of that equation as I probably still have somewhere in the region of 40-50lbs to loose. Sore throats - whilst I have only had one throat/chest infection since I started this which is a big improvement for me, I often have a consistent although low-grade sore throat. I do take thyroxine and sertraline (anti depressant) along with vitamins (magnesium, cod liver oil, probiotics and glucosamine). It's hard to know if the vitamins make any difference as I started them at the same time as starting W30. If you managed to read through this whole post, well done!!   16. I've been going over the forums this week and couldn't find anything similar and wasn't sure where to post my issues(s), so I hope this is appropriate here. I'm on day 30, but would like to go over what began day 28. I'm baffled by this as I've not had an allergic reaction (if that's what this is) or condition like this in my life. Day 28 I woke up with tiny bumps all over my face that felt like snake skin, but oily. It was not noticeable, but you could feel it. Day 29 I woke up and it had spread to my neck, ears and into my scalp behind my ears with a bit of an itchy feeling-still unnnoticeable until you touched my skin. Day 30 (today) I woke up and it's red, very itchy and noticeable on my face, ears, neck and some of my scalp. Nothing in my diet changed, I haven't added anything new to my daily routine. I'm applying Benadryl lotion to hopefully help. Nothing like this has ever happened to me. The worst I had was mosquito bites that swell-and it wouldn't be every time-quite large in the last 3 years. I haven't been out much to test what happens yet since doing Whole30. I started to see an improvement in my skin tone day 23 and started feeling pretty good overall. With this rash, allergic reaction, eczema, whatever it is, my eyelids and face seem puffy/bloated. I first passed it off as part of my seasonal allergies (which I only started suffering from 3 years ago as well and was part of why I decided to try Whole30). That is one area Whole30 has not seemed to help. It's been the worst year for my allergies and over half the Whole30 30 days were negatively impacted by those symptoms. Anyone else experience this or have an idea what it could be? I don't know if the Benadryl treatment is helping since I just started today. I'm hopeful that it will aid and rid of whatever this is. I would really like any suggestions what could be causing this so I can avoid it in the future. Also, I get the impression I should stick with Whole30 100% a bit longer to perhaps see more results with my skin and allergies since the benefits have been a bit delayed or small. Would you agree?
  17. Hi everyone, I am on day 31 today and did 30 days with no slip ups! I had so many benefits. - At the beginning, I was off my depression medication for 2 months and was starting to feel like I may need to go back on again. After a week on the whole 30, I was in a happy mood and balanced all the time. I suddenly loved work again and didn't mind all the little things. I think this is my biggest benefit! - My skin is clearer. - My eczema is reduced. -psoriasis disappeared on scalp - My nails are no longer brittle, they are strong. - The dark circles under my eyes are gone. (My brother kept telling me I looked old, honest right, and he was right, now they are gone, and I look amazing!) - The fog/cloud I always had over me is lifted! - My energy levels have skyrocketed! - My blood sugar is always stable, I'm never hungry until meal time and I thought I was one of those people that had to have 6 meals a day to keep it stable. - I wake up without my alarm clock ready to take on the day - My belt was on loop #1 and now I can go to loop #2 - The fat pants I was wearing, I can pull the jeans and dress pants over my hips without unzipping. They are so saggy and not wearable. - Pants are fitting me that didn't - I lost 6.7 lbs. (Honestly I look like I've lost 12-15, so I was surprised by the scale, but wonder if the body composition changed. Honestly I don't care that It's not 12-15, just glad I feel great and lost some!) In contrast I haven't been able to get the scale to move in a long time, so my metabolism is back. So these are all amazing changes. There are a couple of other things going on this month that I'll still have to experiment with/work on: - Relaxation- I've had a bit of a neck issue creep up right around the starting time of this. I've always had a neck issue but go to the chiropractor once a month. Finally, it's almost better after adjustments every couple days for the last 3 weeks. Now I'm to 3-4 days in between the adjustments. - Eggs or tree nuts or coconut oil? - I did noticed one negative effect of the whole 30 and that is that when I ran (did so about 7 times on the whole 30), I would start wheezing each time and my breathing was more difficult. For some history I do have asthma but take allergy shots for spring allergies, dust, dander and cats. I have no known food allergies, but will find out when I re-introduce. I'm waiting to reintroduce yet until I get some advice on the situation. It's ironic the wheezing started and now I need my inhaler each time I run, when I never did before for the last couple of years. It's rare I do. Well guess what I never ate eggs hardly ever before the whole 30. I always had a breakfast smoothie. I read up this weekend that dairy and eggs are one of the biggest triggers of mucous production in asthma and eggs can be an allergen that can cause food sensitivity or allergies in people. Before whole 30= no eggs to 1 or 2 a week, during whole 30= 2-3 eggs a day. So as of today now I'm cutting those out. And I love my whole 30 clothesmakethegirl.com mayo recipe, but I'm thinking I should cut it all out for a month. That being said should I start today to cut out the eggs and try it and then in a month reintroduce. In the mean time should I wait a week or so before starting the 10 day prescribed reintroduction plan of grains, gluten free grains, dairy and legumes just to get the eggs out of my system. I'll know if I go running and I don't wheeze that the eggs are likely causing it. I could add them back in in a month and see what happens, just getting them out of the system for a month. Thoughts? Also, I don't think Tree nuts are the issue as I've eaten them prior to whole 30 and didn't have the wheezing so I'd like to start with eggs first. Also I think coconut oil now too as I never ate this prior to whole 30 and got diarreah a couple times after a mass amount of it in curry and then my mom informed me that my dad has an allergy to coconuts and gets pretty severe allergies and hives when he eats it. Wish my mom would have told me. This being said, I feel like the egg thing or wheezing is important but I feel like the benefits far outweigh this. And is it possible to have the egg or coconut sensitivity and still see all these benefits? That is confusing. I'm a little disappointed that the wheezing thing cropped up. Could it be from having no grains? But I'm far happier I'm experiencing all these other benefits. What's interesting without the anxiety/depression you'd think the asthma would be so much better. Would you cut coconut and oils out the same time and wait a month and reintroduce them? Maybe in a week could I start reintroducing the 10 day plan?     One Year After First Whole 30

    It's almost one year since I did my first Whole 30, which I started in mid-January 2012. This post discusses the evolution of my health since taking the Whole 30 plunge and recognizing how dramatically food impacts my wellbeing. Before starting the Whole 30, I had lots of symptoms and medical diagnoses: hypothyroid, generalized body aches and pains, fatigue throughout the day, unreplenishing sleep, insomnia, depression, anxiety, GERD (heartburn), eczema, chronic itchy sore throat and ears, inflammation. I basically just never felt "good, " and was pretty much always lethargic and moody. I took medication for my hypothyroid, depression and insomnia. My early reactions to the Whole 30 were wacky: I was super energized by the lack of carbs-- so much so that I felt like I was "rushing" all the time-- almost "high" or manic-- but could barely focus enough to write an email, and could not fall asleep without a sleeping pill of some kind. This was kind of cool, but it was also draining, because I felt more "wired" than energetic. After awhile, my energy leveled out, and I was more consistently awake during the day, and able to fall asleep without medication at night. Other weird side-effects of the early days were body temperature changes-- I would get really flushed sometimes after eating, and at night I would get the cold sweats. Also, before falling asleep at night I would sometimes have a racing, pounding heart. I have learned that these were typical reactions to my hormones regulating due to the dietary changes, and these symptoms were gone after about two weeks. By the middle of the Whole 30, I was able to fall asleep well, and wake up feeling well-rested after a normal 8 hours of sleep. My daily fatigue and body aches were gone for the most part. Because my energy improved, I was able to quit my caffeine habit, and also stopped craving cigarettes. Also, because I started feeling better in general, I was able to notice when several Whole 30-approved foods made me feel bad- nightshade veggies, cooked egg whites, dutch process cocoa and red wine (ok, not approved, but I had a few glasses for a friend's b-day mid-Whole 30) were among the culprits. By the end of the month, my body aches, insomnia, GERD, fatigue and inflammation were generally gone. My mood had improved overall, but I still had ups and downs. My chronic sore throat was gone, but the itchy ears still flared up on occasion, and though the eczema was not gone, it was reduced. I attempted a premature withdrawal from my antidepressants after the Whole 30, and learned the hard way that long-term health problems are not fixed in a month. After struggling to stay antidepressant-free for a few months, I went back on the meds in May and have decided not to push any "cure" before it's ready to happen. What I noticed when I went off the meds was that my carb cravings went through the roof, and if I made any poor dietary choice, I would be paying the price for days afterward-- one cup of coffee or some soy sauce meant that I would slip into a cloud of depression, fatigue and brain fog for days, during which my body would be screaming for chocolate and muffins and lattes. It was brutal, and too difficult to handle while holding down a job. By going back on the meds, I have been able to consistently make better dietary choices, and thus heal my body better. If it's in the cards for me to go med-free again, I'll take that step when the time comes. Now, 11 months after my initial foray into paleo life, I am still surprised by how my body is healing itself. Some of my food intolerances have gone away, due (I assume) to the healing of my gut, and I can now eat nightshades, dark chocolate and coffee without incident. I almost never get body aches and pains, and my heartburn is simply nonexistant. I also rarely get a severe reaction to a food (even the apple pie I ate at Thanksgiving) so it seems that my body has increased its resilience. And though there are mild signs that I have made a poor food choice, I'm not laid up for days. Unexpected results have been increased regularity of my menstrual cycle, improved skin appearance and texture (I barely even need to use body lotion anymore! My skin is so hydrated and firm, it's amazing), and improved muscle tone without a change in exercise. I lost about 10 lbs on the Whole 30, but gained back 5lbs in lean muscle, and now have a more toned, muscular appearance, and am the happiest I've been with my physical appearance potentially ever. Overall, the Whole 30 has given me an appreciation for the body's ability to heal itself, and a respect for the individuality of our nutritional needs. I now approach health from a "my body knows best" perspective, and realize that wellness is a lifelong process, not a quick fix.
