  1. My very first Whole 30 begins on Monday, so I have three days to prep -- shopping, kitchen clean out, cooking for the week, and getting my head wrapped around this new lifestyle. I am excited to begin, but also cautiously suspicious of my ability to eat this way for 30 days straight. I have a great track record of 4-day consistency on a list of eating behaviors, and have even successfully gone 14 days fully Primal. That past success has set me up for this longer stretch of days, although I will have to prove my abilities to myself. I will be 62 on Sunday. I'm very healthy except for the extra fat I am wearing on my body. As a 5' 3" woman, I should not be 186 pounds -- and my recent photos bear this out. I was surprised to discover that I resemble a happy sack of potatoes (NOT the mental picture I carry of myself, but here we are). Try as I might, I cannot bring myself to criticize that joyful person in the photo. She is living a charmed life! Would she be happier if she was thin? No! But . . . could she hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains more easily? Of course. Could she spend the entire day on her feet at an event more comfortably? Yes she could. Could she buy that bicycle she's been wanting and ride off into adventure more confidently? Absolutely! I need this healthful change to my life so I can continue my life adventure. I will begin on Monday, February 26th -- and I promise myself that I will do this for 30 days straight. First Whole 30 -- Here I Come!
  2. Hi all! I am starting the Whole30 on Monday. Sunday I will be grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking for the week ahead. I am REALLY excited about this program because I know people who have had wonderful results! However, I live alone as a single woman. (Well, "alone," considering I have a dog, two cats, and three birds, but none of them want to do the Whole30 with me.) I've always struggled with buying food and not knowing how to store it so that I don't end up throwing some away. Do you all have any tips about how to do the program without wasting food? The fresh veggies and fruits are what scare me the most, haha. I do plan on growing my own tomatoes, sweet peppers, and some herbs this summer, so that will help I think. Any and all tips are much appreciated! Emily
  3. Finished Whole30 yesterday, 6.5 pounds down. It looks more impressive in person than it sounds here - my body has changed, and is shifting back toward its former shape. More striking than the ancillary weight loss is the fact that I don't get out of bed liked the rusted-out tin man anymore. My joints feel much better, and I don't have that bloating, swelling and overall pain I've lived with for years. Well, not as much, anyway, and it's really a noticeable difference. We'll gorge on sushi tonight (and maybe a little chocolate and a glass of wine) but I'm happy enough with the results to keep going. I never feel hungry, and it's not hard to comply with the limits since we eat fairly simple clean meals at home. I probably won't be as fanatically compliant as you have to be during the 30, but I'll stick close to the guidelines. There are all kinds of great recipes to try if I get bored, but in the meantime, I'm happy with the food version of a school uniform, and can eat the same stuff day after day. As long as I eat in time, I don't suffer much from boredom or cravings. This is really about long- and short-term health for me, and it's working. How about you?

    First Day of My First Whole30

    I actually started yesterday, but what's an extra day of health? :-) My sister did this back in October, and is planning to do it again. She's the one who convinced me to try it, but she's dragging her feet now, lol! I'm here mostly for health and energy benefits, though I'll take any weight loss that comes with it. I just turned 50 and I have a 9 year old son, so I've got to get as healthy as pssible for the long run. I'd love to find some like-minded friends here; I think we'll be that much more successful if we support each other. Breakfast was a small sweet potato and 2 poached eggs. I may have a half grapefruit shortly. Coffe with no sugar - I thought it would be disgusting, but I threw it over ice, and it was surprisingly easy. Acid reflux is kicking in, but I hope that'll go away with a little time. How about you?

    1/3 of the way through!!

    I will officially be 1/3 of the way through my Whole30 after today!! Woohoo!! Despite the lack of support I have had from my family (who are coming around) I am sooo pleased with myself and feeling much better. I am still having trouble with dreaming or "fantasizing" about foods that are no good for me. This has certainly been a psychological struggle this far. I suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and am still feeling some effects of the disease, although not as many before. For other sufferers out there, did you find it took longer than the 7 days listed in the book? What about specific foods that are allowed but bothered you? I haven't been eating nuts and it seems to be helping somewhat. My next problem is becoming creative with veggies? Any suggestions? I would love any support or comments!
