  1. sodium benzoate

I did a search of the forum and I looked in the book The Whole30 to see if Sodium Benzoate is compliant and couldn't find anything. Unless I missed it. Does anyone know? I looked it up online and found some downright scary information about lab-synthesized version that is often used in foods. This is making me want to avoid it ALL costs. Also, the E# for sodium benzoate is E211.
  2. Is Celery Juice compliant?

I found a grass fed beef snack at our local health food store and it has celery juice which I'm pretty sure they use as an additive because it has natural nitrites. It says "no nitrites added except that naturally occur in sea salt and celery juice. I see this ingredient on a lot of "natural" meat products that claim no nitrites so I'm hoping that it is ok because that would give me many more options. I live in Canada so maybe it is something unique to us here? Thank you! Krista
  3. Hi all. Can anybody tell me more about the science behind or effects of sulfur dioxide (what's the difference between sulfur dioxide and sulfites? are they equally as bad?), and how - and how badly - it can throw off the Whole30? On day 22, I just found that the lemon juice I occasionally put in my tea contains it. Major bummer The forum posts I've found thus far seem to have mixed messages about whether I need to start over, but either way I'd like to know what it does, even just out of curiosity. Bonus points for thoughts from admins/experts on whether or not I need to start over. Thank you!
  4. Potassium Citrate

I've been able to find an answer to whether every ingredient on this list is compliant (YES) EXCEPT for the Potassium Citrate... Anyone know? INGREDIENT LIST: Almondmilk (Water, Almonds), Vitamin/Mineral Blend (Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin D2, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B2, Zinc), Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt, Potassium Citrate, Natural Flavors, Locust Bean Gum, Gellan Gum This is the product:
  5. Rice powder

We are preparing to begin the Whole30 on Sept. 1 and are going through everything that we normally eat. My husband takes a lot of medication and one of the additives is rice powder. It's a small thing but we are wondering if this is a problem? Thanks for your help.
  6. Caramel Color

I have an unsweetened brewed iced tea with this additive. It's not on the Sneaky Sugars list or Additives list. Short research though I found it may have whey and sulfites? Better safe than sorry or does anyone know the definitive answer?
  7. Almond Milk...

We found an almond milk that looks good except it has potassium citrate in it. I saw that sodium citrate is on the list of OK additives. So is potassium citrate ok?
  8. Olives

Hi, I purchased a jar of whole olives. I've never bought olives before... I picked the brand with the least amount of ingredients. Could you tell me if the following additives are okay? - lactic acid - potassium sorbate - citric acid Thank you.
  9. Rotisserie chicken...

Ok, I used to eat rotisserie chicken at least once a week. After investigating it appears there's ALOT if non compliment Ingrediants. Any help or advice here?
  10. I have used glutamine in the past for help with recovery. After starting the Whole 30 I started really checking into the labels of everything. My glutamine has an ingredient of neotame. After researching I find this is an artificial sweetener. So I contacted the company. They told me that there is such a little amount that is is used as a flavor enhancer NOT an artificial sweetener. Plus it is so minute it does not cause the body to produce any glycemic response. Therefore they claim there is not added sweeteners of any kind. Can use this?
  11. I love black olives, but it's almost impossible to find any kind without sodium nitrite (E250) or iron gluconate (E579). Is it sufficient to just rinse the olives thoroughly before I eat them, or do they absolutely need to be in a pure water/salt blend?
  12. In my search for a source of meat I found a really good one, who also has organic sausages... Now the additives they did mention on the sausage only is ascorbic acid and siliciumdioxide. Are those ok to use or off limits?
