Troodledoodle
Hi everyone, I'm new here. I've been trying to stick to paleo for a year or so, but the last few months things have been sliding back a little, rice here, potatoes there, agave sweetened dessert here, and it's getting outta control. I need a reset, quite desperately. I've been trying to do it alone, but my sugar cravings are bringing me down, I need a little cheering on to get me through the first week. After that I know I'll be okay. The silly thing is, I have health conditions that mean that if I eat badly, I suffer. Really suffer. Pain, debilitating fatigue, depression. I'm also on a lifelong struggle with my weight. I'm about 40 lbs overweight, at the moment, and gain weight so easily and lose it so slowly. I'm unable to do much exercise, so a good diet is essential. But I'm on a couple of medications that are notorious for weight gain and sugar cravings, and I have that to contend with too. So, a strict clean paleo diet is the only way for me. I know it works, I know after a week I'll feel so much better, I just need a little moral support to get me through that week. My DH has terrible eating habits, and there is always tempting junk food around. I can be strong - but only once the first few days of cravings have passed. I won't even dare eat fruit, because that just feeds the sugar monster. Trudie
megmac
Hi Trudie, Have you ever read The Slight Edge? I'm in the middle of it now, and the philosophy switch goes hand in hand with being successful at eating right. I hate to sound like a broken record, but it's all in your head. Use your failures to propel you to success! Come up with some strategies to get you past the tough hours. Go to bed early, take a walk, take a bath, get a massage...just get those few days behind you. Have you read ISWF? If not, that's the place to start. Even if you already know what it says, I find that reading it every night during my W30 keeps me in the game. If your family is not on board, you have to create a safe bubble to live in until you feel stronger. Surround yourself with the right reading, online community and thoughts. You CAN do this. Find your burning desire!
megmac
P.S. And surround yourself with compliant food! If I cook up a storm (and spend lots of $ doing it), I am much more likely to stay on track.
Terresa
Something that may help is answering a food craving for something that makes you feel sick/pain with "ouch!" Yes, actually saying it out loud, so that your brain begins to associate these foods with a bad reaction, rather than the expectation of pleasure. It sounds a bit crazy, but it actually does retrain your thought processes. Best of luck and good health!
Bridget
Hi, Trudie- You are not alone ! Lots of great folks here willing to pitch in and support you ! Just FYI- I am half way through my second Whole 30 (I finished my 1st in Sept 2012, started and stopped a few between then and now-but totally on track during this one) I am having serious chocolate cravings this time around- probably didn't help that my generous son has, for the last7 months or so, brought really nice, quality and amazing dark chocolate home from his job at Whole Foods for me to try/have. Love the stuff, but went cold turkey three weeks ago, and started up this Whole 30 16 days ago. Still difficult, so don't feel alone ! I find I have come here more in the past few days for encouragement that I get from reading everyone else's story. Enjoy !!!!
tarynlee22
Hey Trudie!!! Lets do it!!! I have started over a couple times. I started my whole 30 a month ago and restarted at 2 weeks and most recently at 20 days. I am committed and ahve decided to post a log on here to hold me accountable. I also like the idea of saying "ouch." We can do this!!!!

Ana 2013
Adding to the good vibes sent your way: you can do it!!
Beets
Adding to the reading list: The Paleo Coach. It helps reframe your thinking in an extremely helpful way. I've known I need to quit wheat for years and could never make it stick, despite the health issues it caused. This book is about putting your health first, and it can really change the way you think. And behave. It's an easy read.
calee
Trudie, you can do this! I started eating Primal on January 1st. On April 30th I decided to try a Whole30. It's been a great experience. I find it so much easier to let go instead of trying to have "just a little". I'm actually surprised at how easy it is. I wake up and read logs for inspiration, then read again in the evening. I try to take this one day at a time. I figure I can do 1 day. Come get lots of support!
Troodledoodle
Wow, thank you all so much! I'm blown away. I've made it to almost the end of day 2! Nearly caved last night - my husband was rushed into hospital and I was so stressed, and also hadn't had time to eat. It was 9pm before we got home (he's okay, it was anaphylactic shock) and there were scones and pizza and chocolate, all sitting there calling me. But I stayed strong, and said to the voice that was whispering, "why don't you just start it again tomorrow", "there'll always be a reason to put this off until tomorrow, gotta do this NOW!". And ate a sweet potato and some tuna. Thank you all again for the warm welcome and encouragement - I came back here not expecting any replies! KJT
Good for you! It's the stressful times when things fall apart easiest, because we're used to countering stress with the gooey treat of our choice. It can take nerves of steel to say no at those times. But it gets easier, the farther away from the sugar you get. I'm not saying the desire ever goes away, but it does become less all-encompassing. Keep it up! You're doing wonderfully!

Beets
I think once you get something like that under your belt--holding strong despite very stressful situations--you start you build new brain patterns. Now you *know* you can do it.

Troodledoodle
Holy moly. You got this girl. You just survived stress upon stress. Poor guy...what is he allergic to and how did it get him? It's crazy, but apple cider vinegar! We didn't know, this was the first time it happened. Poor guy, we had to call emergency services he reacted so violently. But he's okay now. percypat
Well done you on getting through all that. It's not uncommon to develop an allergy to something over time ... I used to scoff sunflower seeds like they were the last food on earth when I was little ... Started getting bad reactions to them in my early twenties and only figured out what it was a few years later! Thank goodness you found out what it was and know to avoid it. Glad he's better
Troodledoodle
Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I was so proud of persisting despite Wednesday's stress, but today just piled stress on stress and I caved. I am so mad with myself now.
Terresa
*hugs* Change is hard when things are going smoothly. Old patterns are so much more comfortable in times of stress, even the ones that aren't good for us! Don't beat your self up for being human. Instead, use this as good reason to start clean and stick to it, for you, because you deserve it!
