awall1013
Hello everyone! My name is Ashley and this is my first approach at Whole30. I have been reading about the paleo diet for about a month now and attempting to hold to the rules, and doing pretty well. However, I feel I need to actually participate in the Whole30 to overcome some of my more persistent obstacles... which mostly includes chocolate and cheeses! So, here I am! Currently on Day 2 and taking my Whole30 Daily's advice to find some other Whole30er's to form a support team. I definitely would love to have some people to seek encouragement and advice from as my paleo recipe selection is quite slim... So, again, here I am and excited to meet you! Jinkse21
Ashley, you've come to the right place for support! This community is very supportive and there's always a moderator to answer your questions! I don't think I could have succeeded if it wasn't for the forums! If you Google/Bing "Paleo/Primal/Whole30", you will find all kinds of information and recipes! I was overwhelmed with information and ideas and still keep finding more! If you can get your hands on Well Fed, it is a great "cookbook" with a lot of easy-to-follow recipes that don't require crazy, hard-to-find ingredients. The author also includes a lot of tips for following the Paleo/Primal lifestyle. The best part is that most of the recipes are Whole30-compliant! She also has a website http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/ that has some of the recipes in the book. I would include other web/blog sites but I keep losing what I've already typed because I forgot to pull up the site in another window and this is the 4th attempt to respond to your post! Nom Nom Paleo is a great site but some of her recipes can be pretty in depth. Elena's Pantry is another great one with fairly simple recipes. Heath Bent is a great site for Paleo information and recipes too. Like I said, there are plenty of sites to keep you busy! there is also the Recipe Sharing forum which has a lot of get recipes tried by other Whole30'ers. Good luck on your W30 adventure!! Brandy
Hey Ashely - Today is my dad 2 as well! Do you have pinterest? I find a lot of good recipe sites through there and love that you can organize the recipes you will actually like/make on a board specifically for W30. I'm on pinterest as Brandygee if you'd like to check out my Paleo or Whole 30 boards. A lot of the recipes I've pinned lead to websites with a TON or recipes. Some you'll have to double check all the ingredients. For example, there are some that claim to be W30 but seem to be SWYPO (Sex with your pants on) recipes & not really following the fundamentals of W30. How has it been going so far? I kind of freaked out last night and had a morsel of my boyfriend's garlic bread. But was good all day before that and good all day today! 28 days left! Good luck! -Brandy
awall1013
Jinks: Thank you so much for all the advice and websites! I am going to be a bit overwhelmed, I'm sure, but that is wonderful! Also I have been checking out “Well Fed†and wondering if it was worth buying, so I will definitely have to grab a copy. The easier the recipe the better! Brandy: I do have a Pinterest and will look for your boards. Hmm. I'm not sure what SWYPO is…? I have been doing well for the past 3 days. Tonight I am meeting a friend for dinner at a local burger joint so my plan is to order without cheese and slide the stuffings from the bun. I also will have to restrain myself from getting any drinks, but that shouldn't be too hard. My hardest obstacle is keeping myself from cheese – it's my weakness. And don't worry about the morsel! You were only 2 days in, that's easy to come back from!
Brandy
Hey Ashley - Happy Day 3! The SWYPO is one of the terms they use on this site it means Sex with your pants on referring to recipes that are technically Whole 30 but take away from the greater idea of Whole 30, breaking your cravings with carbs, sweets, etc. Like making a paleo-friendly pizza. It could technically be Whole 30 compliant, but the idea is to not rely on these types of food... kind of cheating the system! How did dinner out go? I actually had a deconstructed burger last night also! I used large lettuce leafs to wrap it in & it worked pretty well! I don't have any special attachment to cheese like you, BUT I swear the only reason I even ate burgers or fries was to have something to put my ketchup on So, last night I made paleo ketchup. It was super easy and although not Heinz, it did the trick. Have you found any recipes yet? I've been trying to cook W30 meals in bulk every couple days and freezing it so I always have something to grab in the morning to take to work for breakfast and lunch. Pretty handy. gingerrox
Having a bunch of ground meat in the fridge has been a godsend. This weekend I didn't get that much in "make-ahead" meals prepared, so when I had nothing to bring for lunch one day I cooked up a pound of ground beef and various veggies. I had a third of it for breakfast with an egg, took another third to work for lunch, and just cooked up the remainder today in a fritatta. I seriously think I could (and might!) do the entire 30 days on ground meat.

awall1013
Happy Day 3 to you too, Brandy! I'm glad you shared what SWYPO is since I seem to be finding a lot of recipes which fit the bill! I'm glad it's only Day 3 for me, so I can correct my train of thought and become more Whole30-focused. I'm beginning to understand Whole30 means no almond/coconut flour, cocoa, etc... correct? My dinner actually went far better than I expected. I have experience with very weak self-discipline, but I believe I went 110% for eating out on my Day 2! Where my friend ordered a gourmet burger with mac-n-cheese (gooey, cheesy goodness), I stuck with a plain burger with lettuce, tomato, and grilled onions. My first move was to take the bun and move it far away from my plate. I also opted to order a side of fresh veggies rather than what I initially tried to talk myself into -- sweet potato fries. I was proud of myself! I've never been a big fan of raw veggies, but I ate all the sweet peppers, brocolli, and carrots off my plate, and with no dip to boot! I'll have to get that paleo ketchip recipe from you though, Brandy! That sounds wonderful! I have found a lot of recipes on Pinterest. However, after what you said and what I've read on some other boards, I think a lot of them are SWYPO. One I made for breakfast this morning, though, was both delicious and Whole30. Peel and cube a sweet potato into small pieces. Cook in coconut oil with some ground cinnamon and sea salt. Cook until all the cubes are soft. It smells delicious and tastes even better! I think it would also be a great snack if you're feeling something sweet... Ground meat is a godsend, for sure! I also have experiemented with fish already -- something I have never attempted before. I have made my meals for the past 4 days the morning of each day. My breakfasts have consisted of eggs and turkey meat, lunches are usually salads, and dinners are large mixes of grilled veggies and meat. I'm finding myself pleasantly surprised at all the veggies I actually like! So far so good; my Day 3 has definitely not been as horrific as my Whole30 Daily suggests... I feel very optimistic and energized.
Brandy
So far so good; my Day 3 has definitely not been as horrific as my Whole30 Daily suggests... I feel very optimistic and energized. Oh my gosh.. right? I woke up this morning feeling good and as I read my Whole9 daily email I started to get more and more tired. Power of suggestions I guess! Way to go saying NO to the potato fries! Would be good to make at home in the oven but who knows what they do to them before they reach your table at a reasturant. I've never really tried sweet potatoes besides a few months back at Burger King with, what else, ketchup! I think I found the one thing you're not supposed to put ketchup on But I did buy some sweet potatoes yesterday to try in a soup so I may try your suggestion for them too. Sounds heavenly! What is your handle on pinterest? I'd like to add you so I can steal some of your recipes. Ginger & BEP - I made about 2lbs of ground meat (bison & deer mixture) last night so today was a "taco" salad. Afraid I may run out of ideas for it before long. Suggestions to spice it up would be great.

Bluebiscuits
Hi everyone! I'm on day 1 of my second Whole30. As I read through your posts I thought: these ladies need homemade mayo! I used the recipe on nom nom paleo's website. You can add herbs and seasonings to it to make a dip for raw veggies. I also thin sliced sweet potato and oven baked them into "chips" with homemade mayo and a sprinkle of garlic powder.
bep0819
@Bluebiscuits. I was just thinking about what to serve guests in the future and I thought about crackers. Not serving them but how I wouldn't dream of buying them. Love your sweet potato suggestion!
awall1013
Thanks so much, you guys! I am going to have to find this homemade mayo! I am not a girl who can do dry tuna.. bleh. Also, question: I have been experiencing some major migraines and mood swings this week. I've read through the Whole30 Daily Day 3 and recognize the mood swings are common, but has anyone else experienced the headaches? I'm wondering if they might be a symptom of withdrawals.... in which case, hey! I'm experiencing a change already, right?! On a more positive note, I had a proud moment yesterday. 8 weeks ago I joined a 5k training program with never having run before in my life (with the exception to high school sports.) Yesterday was the program's goal run. I had ran in a race the previous weekend with a time of 31:48. Yesterday I beat that with 31:24! With the migraine and kinda depressed feelings yesterday morning, it was a miracle! So on top of eating healthier, I'm also working on my fitness. I begin half marathon training (what?!) on June 3! kristenc
Hi! I am starting my whole 30 tomorrow. (May 20) Have been easing into Paleo over the past few weeks - cutting out grains, processed foods, most dairy, sugar, alcohol, etc. My last big hurdle was breakfast. ( I was having kefir, green smoothies or unsweetened greek yogurt with berries and coconut flakes) Doing the meat and veggies thing for lunch and dinner easily and eating veggies or soaked and dehydrated nuts for snacks. I had a blood test done a few years back saying I have a sensitivity to eggs. - so that is out for breakfast and the idea of meat for breakfast - aside from bacon - is so not appealing. I tried eating leftover chicken veg soup for breakfast the other day and It was making me nauseous. Hoping I can push through this!
awall1013
Kristen: You sound like you're starting on the same path as me; I was about 90% paleo before diving into Whole30. And just like you, I was accustomed to having Greek yogurt for most of my breakfasts. I have switched to making eggs a staple for my breakfasts now. However, I think I might have an idea you could play around with! I have been making a lot of "hashes" in which I dice sweet potatoes and fry with onions, peppers, the works. Then place it over ground beef and enjoy! (I always put a fried egg on top too.) It's delicious and you can experiment with spices too!

Over the past 8 months I've gone from FF Vanilla Creamer with sweatener to half and half with raw sugar to half and half alone. I've tried coffee the "old way" and it's awful to me now. It's hard at first but I realized I enjoyed the coffee more than the treat I was pouring into it as well. Good luck!
awall1013
This may seem like an awfully ridiculous question, but I've searched my grocery store top-to-bottom and cannot find coconut milk. Shelda17
This may seem like an awfully ridiculous question, but I've searched my grocery store top-to-bottom and cannot find coconut milk. Any advice on what section to look and a brand name? In my grocery it's in the Asian foods section. The only brand they carry is "Thai Kitchen." I've been reading a lot about BPA free cans and coconut milk without any rogue ingredients, and ordered a case of Natural Value organic, but I see they're out of stock right now. Native Forest was another one that got high marks. I am committing myself to a Whole90 to see if I can get some recovery from my m.s., so I thought a case was a reasonable investment.
