Gwendolyn's W30 Blog or How To Eat Your Weight in Fish&Eggs

Hello All! Day Four and I just discovered this portion of the forum.. Starting now with some relevant points:

  • I haven't eaten red meat or poultry for 23 years, started eating seafood about 10 years ago, but really only order it occasionally when I'm out and rarely cook it at home. Note to self: This habit is about to CHANGE.
  • I've been diagnosed with PCOS and took Glumetza for about a year, but have been off any medication for at least a year.
  • Stopped eating any flour and reduced cane sugar (and the like) intake about 6 weeks ago.
  • This is my first go round with Whole30; besides the health "gut healing" benefits, I am really looking forward to changing my relationship with food.

So, Day 1 I got up just early enough to scramble some eggs in coconut oil and pack them up with avocado, tomato, arugula to take to work for Meal 1- I got a lot of, "Are you eating salad for breakfast??"

I had tuna packed in olive oil with lemon & dill with chopped olives, arugula & avocado wrapped in bibb lettuce leaves for Meal 2.

Meal 3 - I made salmon cakes with sweet potato & egg coated in unsweetened coconut flakes and stir fried some kale and zucchini with crushed red pepper.

Side note of hilarity & awfulness - I came home after 8+ hours to discover I'd left the stove top on. Realizing maybe I shouldn't be cooking before coffee...

And of course I eventually had coffee - organic, fair trade italian roast straight black! Yummmmm. No snacking. Felt full and no real cravings... yet...

Day 2:

Meal 1: Learning from my mindless stovetop mistake, I baked several eggs in a cupcake tin with dill and s&p the night before, so had two eggs, half a grapefruit, avo, arugula, black coffee.

Meal 2: Massive salad of kale, carrots, tomatoes, arugula, canned tuna packed in olive oil, s&p and seltzer water (which I'd already managed to replace Coke with, thank gawd) with lime and grapefruit pieces.

Meal 3: Okay.. there was an attempt to make a shredded raw beet and arugula salad that was a FAIL, due probably to the unfortunate dressing i made.. I ended up with the salmon/sweet potato patties and some sort of salad with kale and veggies. More seltzer!

No cravings today, BUT, I realized that as soon as I got home I immediately wanted to snack. I evaluated how I felt and did not snack. Yay me ;)

Day 3:

Meal 1: Saturday am I slept in until 11:30 and felt like a zombie... and exactly like the picture of the sleepy coma kid in my Day 3 email! Also, I was not hungry... except maybe for pancakes?!? So I had (the previously) baked eggs, avocado, black coffee.

Meal 2: I went grocery shopping! And bought things! Like dee-lcious gheeeee! I had the last three salmon/sweet potato patties (won't be making those again anytime soon...) a baked microwaved sweet potato w ghee, s&p, and steamed broccoli with awesome Trader Joe's garlic salt grinder and lemon.

Meal 3: One of my bestie's is being super supportive and we cooked dinner together! He made mussels with ghee & garlic, baked tilapia with Arizona Dreaming spice from Penzey's and stewed tomatoes with garlic, vidalia onion and tons of kale. Yum!! But then I got home and felt like I didn't have enought fat.. so ate half an avocado? Not sure where this falls, and I'll just try to make sure I get what I need in my future meals.

half an avo is PERFECT!

I'm impressed with your culinary prowess! ;-)

When I get cravings...doing the evaluation is key, and yet, I've also started just eating a spoonful of coconut oil...and my body, in these short 5 days, is starting to think, hey, I"m short on energy, can I have some coconut oil?"

Prior, if I was being good about sugar, it was "I want a fruit".

I really need to check out those salmon/sweet potato cakes....I think they sound great. What was it that you didn't like?

I guess you are just a couple days behind me...so, great job!

Day four - don't kill anyone, and you get credit!

Thanks Christi!!

Culinary prowess?!?! WOOHOO! I did just make my very first batch of paleo mayo and it came out great! :D Seriously drizzled in that olive oil for, like, 5 minutes...

Here's the recipe for the salmon sweet potato patties. There was nothing wrong with them! I just got really tired of all that coconut for SO MANY MEALS. If I make them again, I'll freeze half the batch so I don't feel the need to eat all of them in a couple days.

PS: No one has died yet today!

Thanks! I think I'm going to make them....and, I LOVE coconut....could eat it morning noon and night....wait, does that make it a bad thing for me????

LOL -

I used to make mayo years ago for our kids...when we were doing the non gluten, non yeast, non sugar, non dairy thing for allergies - back in the stone ages. Actually, just this side of the stone ages, because I had a blender! Gotta do that...gotta!

Anyway - glad you made it through today and didn't kill anyone...

My husband had to have his head put back on once...but after that, I made nice! ;-)

And... Day 4:

I spent today working on meal ideas, getting organized, reading reading reading... Made mayo for the first time ever and it came out great! Roasted beets, made a portobella and beet green stir fry, made roasted carrot chips with garlic (omgzzzz), baked more eggs for the next couple of days breakfasts. Packed up my lunch for work.

I feel good. Ate well all day - including making tuna salad with my delicious homemade mayo - Woot! Although... I definitely did some snacking on those carrot chips.... everytime I went into the kitchen, one or two in my mouth! I guess I could've done a lot worse, but still. I was snacking to snack, not for any nourishment.

Bring on Day 5!

carrot chips....that would work well with my guacamole...that I haven't made but want to! Trying to figure out what to scoop it up with, though I have been known to eat guac with a spoon.

Congrats on day 4.

I gotta get my blender out and make some mayo!

And, nothing was killed in the making of that post! Good job! ;-)

Thanks Christi! I agree, guacamole is definitely eating-with-a-spoon worthy!

Day 5, ya'll..

Feeling pretty good. Headachey earlier and I think I ate less today. Not hungry at all this morning and then made myself eat my packed M1 of baked eggs, avo, apple around 10:30. M2 was a massive salad that I'd fancily packed into a quart size Ball jar, canned tuna, my mayo & avo. Really great and filled me up, so didn't eat M3 until probably too late in the evening. BUT! It was soooo deeeeelicious... seared tuna steak with the tasty & refreshing topping chocked full of cilantrolimegingergarlicgooooodness that you can find by clicking the link below. Srsly. Do yourself a favour and mix up someof this:

http://jeremyandkathleen.blogspot.com/2012/08/whole-30-day-23.html?m=1

I think I might be eating too much avocado... is that even possible??

O! Also had iced coffee with a blob of coconut milk I put in the fridge. YUM.

Day 6...

Has started off, like, uuuuuuugh....

Slept way late. Hella grumpy. Can't wake up. Womp.

M1: baked eggs, apple, and (first since I started this) fresh ground almond butter. I cannot breathe through my nose right now = I cannot smell or taste. Double Womp.

Ok.. I'm going to listen to the week's This American Life and hunker down at my desk until this mood blows over... wish me luck!

Ah - Day 6 - the killer has come out! hugs!

Ok, my 15 minutes is up for right now...BUT - I'm so going to go to your link from day 5 - and, I think they said that 1 a day is ok....and, I have a friend that has done some serious health related diets that says that eating good fat is GREAT for you - and you may find that you've been needing more great fat in your diet....to heal!

Anyway - have a great day!

and, go check out my daily post...Christi's something or other! ;-)

Welp, Day 6 continued! (Thanks for the pep, earlier, Christi!) M2 has become my workday norm - tons of kale, arugula, bell peppers, carrots, tomatoes... this time with leftover tuna steak from last night and a blob of my yum mayo. The bad mood continued... Super exhausted most of the day, but had plans to have dinner with a friend who is also W30. She's a total veg, though, and after our dinner of crustless quiche, beet greens and roasted beets, I told her I didn't think she was eating enough and certainly not enough fat! So, M3 felt slim, so when I got home i microwaved a smallish sweet potato and ate it with some ghee.

Tomorrow will be one week... doing this...

Congrats on getting thru another day! You are jus a couple of days ahead of me. I started to feel the mood swings today and wanted to take a nap at about 3pm so I feel your pain on that. Get a good night of sound sleep and we will hit the ground running again tomorrow! Your posts really help me. Thanks for sharing!

Well, I didn't blog at all yesterday... work was way busy and I barely had enough time to craft a meal after, between errands and social activities - - but I DID it.

Day 7 went really well! I was not the grump from the day before, had a good amount of energy, didn't feel the need to nap at my desk - always a plus - also, my boss who'd been on vacay for the entire week I've been doing W30? She said my face looked BRIGHTER. That I looked good! That was nice. Nothing like outside affirmation... So, M1 & M2 were on track with my norm - eggs, avo, veggies, I think I ate an apricot; then, massive salad of greens & veggies & plop of mayo. O, I forgot my tuna, so I had a palm of raw almonds. M3 was the super quick meal that was still super yummy: shrimp with coconut curry and brussel sprouts! I haven't gotten compliant fish sauce yet.. but the curry was still delish. I wish I'd eaten slower though. So I went out with friends and had seltzer and lime. This was probably the first situation where I really wanted a beer... dark and bitter craft beeeeeeer. But I did not imbibe! When I got home, I did have a cold brussel sprout. Snacking!

Week One down, ya'll.

Chitowngirl ~ I'm so happy my posts help you! Wow! Thank you so much for your words of camaraderie and support!

Day 8! Yes! So far so good... except.. not having cravings as much as just sort of.. hungry. I think my breakfasts might be getting smaller. Need to plan a bit better and work on that. M1 today was half a grapefruit and scrambled eggs made with a blob of coconut milk. My M2 was typical massive salad of greens, veggies, tuna and mayo. Around 3pm, though, I started really feeling hungry. I caved at 4 with a palm full of raw almonds and some ice coffee. REALLY don't want to give in to the afternoon hunger, though, don't want to let this old habit emerge. Let's see how the rest of the day goes...

My daughter is months ahead of us, and she mentioned last night that when you get hungry you are ravenous! I think that is what you are feeling. Good, you!

Have been having alternate problems with meal 1 and meal 3. I guess we are still learning! At least you are still plodding in the right direction!

Meh.

No dinner planning.. I ate, but not in the spirit of what I'm trying to do here. M3? Leftover brussel sprouts from last night and a rushed tuna salad in romaine lettuce leaves. Ate in the kitchen. Full, but... not satisfied? Need to plan for dinner tomorrow, make some eggs tonight for tomorrow's breakfast. Get back on that bicycle...

The crockpot is helping me with dinners. If nothing else, I have the meat handled with that. If I get home a little late I can just eat a salad with it, if I'm on time, I can make something else but it's faster than trying to figure the whole meal out. Congrats on another day!

Day 9?? For real? I am still doing this. I have not cheated, I have barely snacked! Although the past couple days - due, I think, to poor meal planning and smaller breakfasts - I have been HUNGRY. Not craving. Hungry. So, making good choices regarding that hunger. I hope! M1 & M2 per usual - scrambled eggs/avo; massive veggie salad with tuna. Small sweet potato, mid-evening...

M3 Ohhhh.. sooooo....deeeeeelicious! My bestie ordered me a julianne slicer and it came today! I made zuchinni comfort noodles from The Clothes Make the Girl. I might eat variations of this, like, every day for the rest of my life. Ha!

http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2011/08/18/comfort-noodles/

So, I have a friend visiting this weekend. Curious how the meals will go... trying to plan!!

Yeah! Day 10! Still difficult to get up this morning... but I wonder if that will ever change. I'm not a morning person. No one has ever argued that! Thank god for COFFEE. Before this W30, I honestly would never even make breakfast, just chug coffee until ravenous sometime in the afternoon... unless of course I was hungover... then I'd definitely eat greasy, heavy anything. I think the no alcohol thing has been really good for me. Just sayin.

M1 was deelish! Fried plaintains, scrambled eggs with a blob of coconut milk and half an avo! M2 I overcooked a sweet potato - too small for the normal 5 minutes in the microwave, no worries, ate it anyway! A stir-fry of leftover zuchinni, kale, garlic and crushed red pepper and tuna mashed with the avo half.

My friend was here for dinner, so for M3 I made us salmon baked with dill, ghee and garlic, spaghetti squash and a salad. She said it was delicious. Win!

A third of the way down and I'm feeling good! O! PS... I discovered Larabars today... so I ate half of one while running errands in between breakfast and lunch. Cherry Pie is YUM.

Yay! Double digits on your days! The coffee for breakfast (as much as I needed to become human) in the morning used to be my normal routine as well. Then by the time lunch rolled around I would eat everything in sight. Feel gross for an hour. Then proceed to get through the rest of the afternoon by eating candy and sweets. Then by the time dinner hit, I was crashing too hard from the sugar to even think about cooking and would stop somewhere and grab something to go. Horrible when I look back on it just 9 short days later.

Congrats on one more day! Keep it up!

Visiting friend just left so time to blog! Day 11 went well! For M1 I made us a baked omelette with red onions, garlic, sundried tomatoes, and olives as well as Nom Nom Paleo's sweet potato hash.. super yum, ya'll! M2 we had... more omelette! and a massive salad - my friend had never had kale before, her first try and she ate it raw, what a sport! I wanted to go out somewhere for dinner and I just couldn't think of/find a restaurant that I felt comfortable eating at... I just cannot handle being dosed something non-compliant!! So for M3 we went to a natural food store that has an ahmazing deli. Surprisingly (?), I found very few items that I could actually eat! So ended up with... a raw kale salad! Ha! Um, my friend had cheeeeeesy cauliflower and other very NON-W30 items. Then we went to the movies and I seriously wasn't even tempted by that oily popcorn butter smell and quelled the desire for Cherry Coke. Sweet!

Back later for my Day 12 post... preview? Where has Sunshine Sauce been all my life??

Long weekend and legit exhausted! I did not get the sleep I should've, but back on track tomorrow. Super quick Day 12 update!

Had a Larabar and coffee for M1, cos I was cooking brunch for friends, so M2 was zuchinni noodles with Sunshine Sauce and scrambled eggs with ginger and avo. YUMMMMM and got rave reviews! M3 was a quick salad and tuna and steamed brocolli with ghee. Then, because I had weird meals/timing today, I had scrambled egg with gomasio wrapped in seaweed snax. Now, sleeeeeeep!

Day 13 highlights:

Feeling cruddy.

Maybe it's because my period started a week early?!?

Ate deliciously fried in coconut oil eggs and avo.

Ate large salad of kale and veggies and tuna, natch.

Made mounds of zoodles and more Sunshine Sauce and shrimp.

Now full.

Fighting the urge to consume CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM
