Green smoothie with protein after high intensity morning workout?

So, prior to whole 30, I would drink a small protein shake after doing an hour long "Insanity" workout or sprints on the elliptical in the morning. Then, I would eat breakfast at work about 2 hours later. I am 21 days into my whole 30 and I have been using a protein green smoothie alternative post workout that now I am unsure of. Please someone advise....here is my recipe (it lasts me 4-5 days at about 1 cup serving each morning)

  • 1/2 cup lite coconut milk
  • 1.5 cup water
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 2 tbsps almond butter
  • 2 large handfuls of spinach
  • 2 large handfuls of kale
  • 1 cup of pineapple or 1 apple

I have fallen in love with this smoothie since it keeps me more satisfied than the protein ever did....

Am I having too much fruit with only drinking a cup of this every day? Also, I cannot eat prior to working out at this high of an intensity....it would not stay with me...haha!

You're further along in this than I am, but if this entire recipe is lasting you 4-5 days, I would think the shake is fine... They say not to drink your meals, but if its keeping you satisfied, I don't see why not. Considering 1 banana is considered one serving, I'd say maybe 1/2 c. pineapple is one serving, 1 apple is one serving, so you'd be having 3-4 servings of fruit spread out over 4-5 days. The only problem I can foresee is the post-WO fat. Our post-WO meals are supposed to be as low fat as possible. Pre-WO meals (which I totally get that you can't do) are protein & fat, post-WO meals are protein & carbs. I would almost suggest subbing the coconut milk for green tea (or use all green tea as your liquid base... When not W30'ing it, I make my post-WO shakes with green tea, can't notice a difference in taste), omitting the nut butter, and maybe having it with a couple scrambled egg whites (the boxed egg whites are also compliant, if you prefer convenience, like I do) or some chicken breast or a can of compliant tuna (several brands of canned tuna have soy in them --- apparently the pricier brands don't all contain the soy). I know, I know... tuna & fruity shake, not exactly a great combo. I'd been doing tuna with 1/2 sweet potato for my post-WO meals when I ran out of my egg whites. It gets the job done. Haha...

This is a very bad choice for a post-workout snack because it is high in fat and low in protein - the exact opposite of what a post-workout meal should include. Also, if you are mixing this stuff up and drinking only one cup per day, you are not eating at all - you are consuming a pulpy drink. You are basically fasting for the first 3 or 4 hours of your day because you are not really eating until breakfast. If you are satisfied with this stuff, you have not learned to eat yet. And to really make progress with a Whole30, you have to take the plunge of eating real, whole foods in meaningful quantities.

Check out the meal template for guidelines about how much food we think you need to be eating and the timing and content of pre- and post-workout meals: http://whole9life.co...ng-Template.pdf

Bethany - Thanks for the tips! I am hoping to continue to eat clean once my 30 days is up....I am thinking that the coconut milk isn't necessary and the egg whites will be a good source of protein instead of the almond butter.

Tom - I have to say that I was a pretty healthy eater prior to whole 30 (and I live in Mississippi :P ), but wanted to kick a terrible sugar addiction and I wanted to see if I might have a wheat sensitivity. I have eaten more whole foods and cooked more in the last 21 days than in the last 6 months of my life! haha! Having said that, you are totally right about the fat content of the drink. But I will have to justify my 21 day snafu with an outrageous amount of kale and spinach ingested! haha! Thanks for responding. My biggest takeaway is that I have become more aware of ALL the ADDED SUGAR! It is so ridiculous. Makes me sad.

Nice, I spent summers at my granny's fabric/quilt shop that was across the street from Mississippi College. Grew up on the MS Coast, but I've ended up back in the metro area as an adult....I am on the wellness committee at work and I definitely see myself using some of the whole 30 concepts and ideas to help people along in the fight to break bad eating patterns. Especially since I've really felt fantastic on the program (past week one). Mississippi was just given the laziest state designation.....gotta fight the stereotype!
