Hi! Susan had a wonderful idea of having one place where it is all things related to making/brewing Kombucha could be asked and answered. There are several of us that are newbies at this (me) a

Awesome idea! Plus one for the n00bs right here ... Three weeks ago I didn't know what kombucha was, and now I (hopefully) have a pet SCOBY growing in my kitchen. Either that or I am farming mould.

Just thought I'd share a pic of my 2 1/2 gallon SCOBY and brew, Denver, started by a dear friend and jazz musician several years ago from a bottle of GT's. He passed it along to me when he moved

Lovely gift :)  And the baby SCOBYs can dream of going to new jars!

Frank is very shy.  He is hanging out at the bottom and doing his best to make the tea all murky so I can't see him.

Here is some of his handiwork.

He is a pretty handsome devil, hopefully it'll get passed down the line!

+1 for a pic from Derval!  Especially if we get lovely Lily as well!

Lily & a scoby, I will try!  I'll have to wait till it floats back to the surface though.

Might be sooner than you think.  Look what Frank just did:

He was lying on the bottom of the jar before, now he's suddenly decided to lean up against the side!

Here is my scoby I have received in the mail yesterday, ordered from Etsy.  It also came with black tea bags and instructions.

I am still searching for a 1 gallon container.  The biggest pickle jar I can find is only half a gallon.  I guess I will have to suck it up and buy a $20 jar from Target.

I can't see a picture  :(

Edit: Spoke too soon, posted that and suddenly the pic was there.  Impatient!

Edit 2: Very nice!  Go find it a nice home - I dropped $20 on my big jar and I'm happy I did it :)

Did anyone ever have a baked good called "Herman" when they were young?  All this talk of SCOBY and babies reminds me of it.  Our neighbour had a starter she shared with us, and we would bake a cake type thing with it.  It grew like crazy!  So we had to bake with it a couple of times a week to keep up.  My Mom eventually got rid of it because there was only so much "Herman" we could eat, but man it was yummy and I wish we had it now!  :)
