Christina Cowell
Does anyone know if probiotics usually upset your stomach when you first start taking them? Thanks! Christina :0) www.facebook.com/PracticingPrimal
Moderators Tom Denham Posted June 12, 2013 Moderators Share Posted June 12, 2013 They gave me diarrhea so consistently, I stopped taking them. Instead, I consume sauerkraut, kimchi, bone broth, and kombucha.
MrsStick
That's called 'die-off' and occurs for a few days (up to a week for hubby and I anyways) while the good bacteria in the capsules kill off the ones that are living in your intestines that shouldn't be. We jokingly called it "gut warfare" and kept a sense of humor. Now we get it when we've gone too long without our probiotic, until a few days after restarting. I took them less often when I was making water kefir, but deployment = dead grains = no kefir until after my move next month.
Karen
I had issues with a specific brand, but do fine with others. Check the 'does not contain' list, make sure things like dairy are excluded from the product. Per my doc, some probiotics are started with a dairy culture (or something along the same lines in terms of dairy - that's from memory) so some can still have a trace amount of dairy in them. That's what we figured out was my problem, and my doc has since gone so far as to call manufacturers to check! Might not be the case for you, but worth digging into!
