Carmexx
I have some delicious chocolate mint tea that has "natural flavors" listed on the ingredients. I've been avoiding it because I've heard that "natural flavors" could mean anything, including MSG and the sex glands of beavers.... I would hope that they don't put MSG in tea, but better safe than sorry, right? Should I continue to avoid it?
GoJo09
You could try contacting the company and see if they'll tell you what's in it.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted June 13, 2013 Moderators Share Posted June 13, 2013 I don't worry about "natural flavors" in regards to TEA. As long as the ingredients don't list something explicitly off plan, I would say enjoy it.
Carmexx
Okay thanks!
nichill325
What about natural flavorings on the backs of seasonings. Like I have one that says "salt, cracked pepper, cumin, corriander, and natural flavorings"
Carmexx
Seasonings are another story... IMO I would avoid it because it could mean MSG.
Carmexx
If that's all that's in the spice mix anyways, you might as well just make your own. Ingredients are listed in what makes up the product from most to least. I'm sure you could figure out the ratios pretty easy.
Summer
I'm tired of this "natural flavorings" thing! Why can these companies get away with that? It seems sneaky and it annoys me. I live in a small mountain town and finally found fresh chorizo from Boulder Sausage company. I know Tom has commented about "natural flavorings" not being a problem in tea, but really Carmexx, it could mean MSG (or other crap) in things like meat too you think? For example, I was so excited to find this sausage, but now I am wondering about the fact that is says "natural flavorings" in it. Do I need to be concerned here? Also, what is "Oleoresin of Oregeno?" I thought I would start here to ask although I know I can research on my own too. Thanks!
Robin Strathdee
Oleoresins are oil soluble extracts. So likely, they smooshed some oregano in oil to extract the flavors and compounds in the plant.
Summer
Thanks Robin. Is this something that I need to care about in regards to staying on track?
Robin Strathdee
Summer - honestly, I don't think so.
