KellyDB
Hi - I'm starting the program tomorrow, 6/18, and am looking for a coconut oil that doesn't taste so coconut-y. I currently have Trader Joe's brand and it gives everything a strong coconut taste. Not that I dislike coconut, but there are some recipes that the flavor simply is not compatible with. Any suggestions?
Moderators Tom Denham Posted June 18, 2013 Moderators Share Posted June 18, 2013 Your choices with coconut oil are refined or unrefined. Refined coconut oil tends to be tasteless and odorless. I like unrefined coconut oil and just use ghee when I don't want a hint of coconut flavor.
Susan W
Try cooking with it first. Yes you can smell it but I swear you cannot taste it when heated.
KellyDB
Thanks for the suggestions. I guess maybe I'll just try a different brand. I did try cooking with it first, I still could taste it. Like I said, it's not that it's terrible, but I don't like coconut flavoring in things like eggs and the blander veggies. I'll lean more on Ghee, too. KellyDB
Also, I just realized I could use olive oil for cooking. Don't know how that slipped by me.
kew
I use refined* coconut oil for cooking (I get mine at Whole Foods, fwiw), and it has no coconut taste or smell, and it is stable to a higher heat than the unrefined. I also have some extra virgin (unrefined?) coconut oil (from Nutiva, ordered on Amazon), which to my surprise smelled and tasted like coconut even when it's cooked. The extra virgin CO 'ruined' my zucchini noodles the first time I tried it, but now I just use the two types for different things. * Some may say the refined oil is icky for various reasons. I use it anyway, but I don't remember if the W30 guidelines specify a type.
SpinSpin
I use Nutiva brand CO and I believe I read on the container that if you salt the foods you are cooking with coconut oil the salt helps to neutralize the co taste. I have discovered that it does work for me--might be worth trying?
