migrant_man
Hey everyone, I've been touring in bands for a while now, so I'm fully aware of how silly it is to attempt an autoimmune-protocol, whole30 diet while on the road, but I'm determined. No hotel kitchens, no refrigerator/cooler in the van, and infrequent stops to grocery stores - and I'll be gone for 30 days. Therefore, I need to pack ample food going into this. My ideas so far are as follows: - Canned Tuna - Pork Rinds - Jerky (can anyone recommend a brand?) - Fruit Leathers Clearly, I'm struggling to think of things. I know that I will not be able to do this 100%. We're going to Italy, South Korea, and Japan, and I will no doubt eat grains in those countries. But I want to maintain as close as possible to clean eating in order to mitigate symptoms of Crohn's among other things. Thanks for the help! GFChris
Wow, that's quite a challenge you're taking on - kudos to you! Primal Pacs are Whole30 approved for jerky: http://primalpacs.com/ Sardines, canned chicken and canned salmon are other options. FWIW, a friend of mine with celiac disease recently spend several months in Italy and found it no problem to eat gluten-free while there. Apparently, celiac is common - the phrase 'senza glutine' (pronounced 'senza glue teen eh') will be your friend in restaurants. Enjoy the fresh produce and beautiful country while you're there! ksassy71
I just got back from a long weekend in Vegas, while by bf went to Chicago! We made our beef jerky with this recipe: http://www.againstallgrain.com/2013/01/07/smoky-beef-jerky/ (I have a dehydrator, but it works with just an oven too!). I didn't get it quite dry enough for long term storage, and the last bit molded, so make sure you dry it enough! MUCH cheaper than buying it. We also had: Canned sardines, salmon pouches, canned crab meat, cashews, a couple of larabars, organic fruit leathers (I found a strawberry one from archer farm/Target brand!) We've been pretty lucky with prosciutto being compliant, usually air dried and no added sugar, just have to watch for sulfites. I found that meat and veggies were fairly easy to find, it was the fat that was more of an issue, so maybe olives and nuts? If you have access to a vaccu sealer, you might be able to bring some veggies, at least for the beginning of the trip.
migrant_man
Thanks for the tips! With the Autoimmune Protocol, I can't eat nuts/lara bars, but otherwise I will use the ideas, especially the homemade jerky and salmon pouches.
MrsStick
If nothing else, ask for gnocchi in Italy - it's a "pasta" made out of potato. Yes, potato is a nightshade, but it makes life super easy sometimes. You should be able to get salads in Italy too - all kinds of fish, olives, etc. Beyond that, go for the packs of tuna in oil (not the cans) - so much easier to open and WAY less heavy to pack! AmyS
Love this thread! I just got back from two weeks of traveling and singing - I purposely went off of Whole30 eating during that time; and while it was fun, it has taken a full week upon return to begin to feel fully myself again. On my next singing trip I'm going to do more what you're doing. Pack and take what I can, and supplement with best options on the road/in the air. Awesome! And have a great tour!
