intheboonies
Today is the last day of my Whole30. We just happened to have communion tonight at church. I doubt the thimble-size cup of grape juice was a problem, but could the wafer be the cause of my headache? I haven't had any slips or cheats. PamH
Communion wafers are traditionally not gluten free. At least they weren't quite a few years ago after the Catholic Diocese or Vatican said they were not holy (good grief. Sorry, not Catholic). So, if you are truly gluten sensitive or highly intolerant, I guess it could lead to a problem.
intheboonies
Didn't think it was gluten free, and I'm not Catholic, either. Seems like such a tiny amount that it couldn't possibly cause a headache, especially since I'm not aware of a gluten sensitivity. Could it? PamH
If you are not sensitive to gluten, then it was likely a coincidence. However, close to 1 in 133 people in the US are thought to have Celiac Disease, and most are unaware. Not saying that is you, but just tossing that out there. Then there are the gamut of people who have the remainder of the spectrum of food intolerances. Toss in GMO wheat and we have a fun time figuring all of this out! Still, maybe it was just a boring service or someone's perfume. Hah. I hope you feel better! Pay attention to how you feel when you reintroduce gluten to see if it happens again. For people with real problems, even a small amount can cause symptoms.
Jinkse21
I would be more suspect of the grape juice before the wafer. Even though it was a small amount of juice, it can have a lot of sugar in it and since you haven't had those added sugars for 30 days, it could cause headaches....think sugar rush. I would expect gluten side-effects to affect the gut more. Just my thoughts... Congrats for making it through your Whole30!!!
intheboonies
Well, the service wasn't boring and no perfumes assaulted me. Doubt it was the teeny tiny thimble of juice since I've been eating fruit with no problem. Reintroducing gluten in a few days will be interesting. Or, I could have just gotten a random headache. We'll see...
