ocmomof3
I saw red, white blue in a bowl on the clothes make the girl. Are we allowed that or is it considered dessert?
GFChris
The vanilla or almond extract in the recipe makes it non-compliant, as those extracts typically contain sugar and/or alcohol.

Vian
One of my favorite treats is a bowl of berries with coconut milk on them. Nothing else, just that. It's amazing.
Kim Christensen
I see no problem with some fruit and coconut cream on the plate with dinner. If it's 10 at night and you're craving dessert and you make that then maybe. But for me, fruit with a bit of coconut cream is part of a good delicious dinner. Yum. percypat
Yeah, like Kim said: if you're eating it like a dessert than that's not in the spirit of W30, even if it is technically compliant. As part of meal and not being eaten in isolation as a sweet treat, it's ok. I couldn't stop treating it like a dessert, so I steered off it and brought it back happily when I finished my W30. mamaxt
You could substitute vanilla powder for the vanilla extract to make it technically compliant, but you'd still be faced with the "dessert" question. I'd say, make it at your own risk.

Just googled it and found a brand on amazon that has evaporated cane juice in it (which would make it not compliant). Do you have a brand that you use, that would work on the Whole30? There's this spendy little gem that has no alcohol, fillers or preservatives: http://www.amazon.com/Sunfood-2189-SunFood-Vanilla-Powder/dp/B008L3K2P6/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1372872255&sr=1-1&keywords=vanilla+bean+powder+organic

Vian
Or you could just buy vanilla beans on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-Extract-Grade-B-Madagascar-Bourbon-Vanilla-Beans-6-7-/290678095433?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43adc3be49 and split them to get the seeds out and add it to the coconut milk, then steep it on the stove for 10-15 minutes. As someone who raises orchids, I'd also like to point out that the vanilla "bean" is actually the seed pod of the flower, and that ALL orchids produce seed pods when polinated, just most orchid seed pods are not used in cooking. That vanilla powder said that vanilla orchids are the only fruit-bearing orchid, but it's not a fruit at all.
MrsRobinson
I just had a small handful of blueberries with my meal. I thought I'd feel disappointed but I actually enjoyed them very much.
Bet
So is coconut whip just coconut cream whipped up? I like to have some berried with Redi-whip (obviously non-compliant) and could do coconut cream.
jillian
You can also find alcohol-free vanilla extract - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=vanilla+extract+alcohol+free&sprefix=vanilla+extract+%2Caps%2C142&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Avanilla+extract+alcohol+free

TnT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ouch - no thanks - I'll stick with plain fruit. You can make your own vanilla powder for the cost of a few vanilla beans (they're still not cheap, but they're not $85 either). I buy mine in the spices section at my local co-op. http://www.tinayelle.com/how-to-make-vanilla-bean-powder/ Also, I feel like there is a recipe with berries and coconut whip in the recipes section of it starts with food... I lent the book to my mother a while back, so I can't look, but I swore there was something like that in there.
