And so it begins!

Recommended Posts

Hi all- I'm just introducing myself now that I've browsed around a bit.

My name is Laura and I'm beginning my Paleo journey tomorrow morning. I turned 30 this year and will be divorced in October. I was thin, but unhealthy, in high school and into my early 20's. A bad marriage and then a child, then depression packed the weight on. I don't particularly care about reaching a certain number anymore. I want to be FIT. I want to be HEALTHY. My dad died from a heart attack last year and my mother has had two in the past 5 years. I don't want to be another statistic. Another early heart attack.

I don't remember ever having a healthy relationship food. Happy = eat, Sad = eat, Celebrating = eat, Mourning = eat.....you get the picture. MY goal in learning the paleo lifestyle is to have a healthy relationship with food. As simple as it sounds, the phrase Eat to Live, Don't Live to Eat.....well.....it's a hard concept for me to grasp.

I've packed up the crap in my house and am giving it to someone who thinks I've lost my mind for doing this. I guess I'd think so too if someone asked me if I wanted a ton of free groceries!

I went to the farmers market and got a ton of veggies and some berries. I went to my local EarthFare (who is all about sustainable, healthy living) and bought my meat today. I got shrimp, tuna, grass fed beef, chicken, lamb and some bison just to try out. I've never cooked with it before so I have to figure that out. I have a friend who hunts so my freezer is always stocked with deer meat.  My brother raises chickens and is very against hormone/antibiotic/Monsanto, so I have an endless supply of free range, truly organic eggs.

I've put together my Nitrate free bacon/egg/spinach/bell pepper omelette mix and it's in the fridge for in the morning. I seared off a tuna steak and made a salad with a couple wedges of lemon for lunch and dinner tomorrow is baked chicken legs (skin on) with roasted parsnips and steamed broccoli.  My 3 year old is joining me in this journey....well, at least at home. I hate my relationship with food and I don't want him to have that same relationship.

I'm sure I'm going to have questions and really, I'm here for the support. My friends all think I'm crazy talking about this "caveman diet".  I've never been a huge dieter....calorie counter, yes. I'm not against that....I've lost 40 lbs since Nov. counting calories and exercising but man....I was miserable. I hate doing it.

Anyway....I'm glad this forum exists and I'm glad I found it! I am SO excited about starting this journey tomorrow.

Hi Laura! Wishing you the best on your Whole 30 journey! I've been eating on and off Paleo for about a year now, but I just started my first Whole 30 on Friday. This is Day 3. I'm feeling good about my food choices so far, but man am I craving some frozen yogurt right now. I am totally addicted to sugar and hoping this process will help me break that addiction.

Nice to meet you! And like I said, good luck!

Hi Laura!

You sound like you're mentally in a good place to start this new venture, and it sounds like you have access to some amazing produce.

Hope it goes well for you - we just started today, and looking forward to seeing if we can feel the benefits!

Yes! I'm very excited about it. I wanted to start last week but had already purchased my groceries and couldn't budget two grocery trips in one week.  I've limited my carbs for quite a while now so I'm hoping the transition into no wheat is not as bad as it could be.

The hardest part for me is being very careful to read labels on stuff. I am becoming amazed at how many products contain wheat or a ton of sugar.  At this point, because I still do need to get some of my weight off, I am limiting my fruit intake to the recommended one to two servings per day and am really sticking with berries. I love all kinds of berries so that isn't hard.

I'm so fortunate to live in a community where there are a lot of farms within a short distance. I'm also not far from a city so if I need specialty items, I can usually go there once every week or couple of weeks to get them.

I've been a label reader for ages.....and actually don't buy much packaged food, it makes things a lot easier! (Is it sad I read labels of food I have no intention of buying just for the shock value? Hehe)

Remember its not about restricting carbs - you do need some, so include them in your meals :)
