dry skin on face...

Recommended Posts

I have never had great skin. it used to be absolutely disgusting (terrible acne, was on harsh medication and using terrible lotions as prescribed by a dermatologist...they didn't do a lot!), but cleared up a lot when I changed my diet to more "real" food.

it had started flaring up again recently, perhaps due to more dairy/grains. it wasn't really bad, but I could feel lumps under my skin. these went away, perhaps coincidentally, on day 1-2....but now on day 4 the skin around my chin is particularly dry, with quite a few tiny whiteheads.

has anyone experienced something like this? i thought the whiteheads may be a kind of skin detox but not sure why i'd have dry skin?

I am eating plenty of fats, my (non-existant) skin care routine hasn't changed - i literally just wash my face in the shower!

I think your skin may go through lots of changes over the next 30 days. The dry skin could just be a result from the skin being slightly stretched from those underlying lumps that have since gone away. I have found that my acne-prone skin didn't start responding positively to paleo eating until well after 30 days. Hard to say what's going on just 4 days in - give it time.

thanks Jillian - i'm not expecting miracles in 30 days, but positive changes would be great :) at least then i'll know i'm going in the right direction. if it is wheat/dairy or even added sugars (although not a lot i ate before had these),  better skin would be enough to make me avoid them!

Agree with the others that' you'll probably see many changes and I bet positive ones!  I was not eating much wheat/gluten before this and I really feel and see the difference.  It's as if even a little mucks everything up.    Evan Healy is a skin expert to say the least and following her advice my skin improved ridiculously, then the Whole 30 took it to the next level, as I completely believe "it starts with food".  This info might help, she explains how the skin naturally purges.   The Skin Breathes and Purges

It gets worse before it gets better. I had terrible skin but it clears up when I eat clean. Dairy causes crazy flare ups. Learned the hard way.

Clean skin is the most common benefit people see during/after whole30. Breakouts on the chi area usually mean changes in digestion, so it makes perfect sense.

Try applying some coconut oil before bed on the dry areas.

thanks nadia - I woke up to worse breakouts on my chin this morning! they aren't anything close to the ugly sore lumps I was getting though, just plain whiteheads that look like they'll clear up quite easily. I did expect it to get worse first - I think it can take a few weeks for internal stuff to make its way to the skin surface?

I'm curious what others have to say about dry skin.  I'm on my 5th or so Whole30, and am extending this one for several months, and I have yet to see an improvement in my dry skin.  I cleanse/moisturize with coconut oil, get plenty of gelatin and fat in my diet, etc.  I drink tons and tons of water.  Zits are almost non-existent now (not a ONE prior TOM!) but man, the dry, flaky skin is gross!  I've scrutinized every product I put on my face (minimal) but things are still off.  Any suggestions?

Dry flaky looking skin can just be dead skin that needs to be exfoliated. I was tricked into thinking I had dry skin and needed moisturizers, but what I really had was oily skin with a bunch of dead skin on top. So I would try to 'fix' the dead dry skin and wind up with acne. At age 50, not fun.

That's when I learned about glycolic cleansers and toners. It has made a huge difference. I also did some mild glycolic peels. Once I peeled off the dead dry skin, I was able to extract many white and black heads that had been embedded for years. And remove some dark spots. For a daily moisturizer, I use Emu oil. I think it is fantastic. I haven't tried coconut oil.

This is where I buy my face products from http://www.platinumskincare.com/cleanser-toner-kit.aspx

Unfortunately, exfoliating or oily skin isn't my problem.  I'll exfoliate in the morning and by noon, it's bad again.  It's dry all the time.  I've tried other oils and the problem gets worse - coconut oil is the only one that seems to work.

I get a bad reaction from anything from the store, and even the mildest of facials leave me with a rash for at least a week.

I know gelatin is packed with collagen and my skin is certainly much softer as a result, but that dryness is killing me!  I know skin is nourished from the inside, so I'm curious if anyone has found a magic food to nourish the skin.

Karen-- We have very similar skin, I can totally relate to your question.  Are you taking a quality Omega 3  (or getting enough through food)?  My flakiness has disappeared since I started Omega 3's on W30, almost 5 weeks now.  We use Nordic Naturals b/c I saw  an incredible difference when my middle child began taking them as an alternative to any medication for inattentive ADHD.   Some like other brands but I trust NN, and best price I've found is at Vitacost.

Also, what are you using to exfoliate?  Could it be that it is too harsh and furthering the dryness?

Thanks for the tip!  I'm glad you were able to find something that helped!  I used to take fish oil... but once it was determined I'm sensitive to citrus, I stopped taking it as most of them throw some sort of citrus in them.  I'll see if I can find a good quality one without citrus added.

I'm having the same problem with dry skin and whiteheads!  My skin is especially dry around the mouth and chin; there are a lot of new blemishes there, too.

I'm trying the coconut oil tonight, and I hope that helps.  Is this a type of detox or a reaction to something?

I'd definitely say detox :) and possibly hormonal changes? My skin isn't so dry any more, but I am getting new breakouts - they come and go quite quickly though which is good!

Dry skin can be a sign of a hormonal imbalance, true.

Little breakouts can also be a reaction to a specific food. Like nightshades. I will get skin troubles within hours I ate lets say tomato. Nuts are common irritants too that affect my skin. Do you think it can be the cause?

Fish oil - Green Pastures has a plain one in capsules or liquid. My KP is almost gone after I started taking it. Well, along with wh30 of course.

Honey face wash is another thing to try as honey has amazing healing abilities! Just take raw one.

Thanks for the tip on fish oil!  I was eyeing up the dog formulas as they're non-flavored, so you spared me from going that route!  :)
