Substitute for jicama

Recommended Posts

I was going to make the California rolls from Well Fed until I saw that they contained jicama which is, sadly, nearly impossible to get hold of in Sweden. As I don't know what it tastes like I'm not sure if/what I could use as a substitute. Turnip/some kind of radish/sweet potato/squash? Any ideas?

yeah, texture is similar to a radish, flavor is mild and sweet. It has a crisp raw-ness to it that could not be replaced with squash or sweet potato. If you must have another vegetable, shredded carrot or julliened radish/daikon would work, but you could also just leave it out as Bethann suggests.

I think water chestnuts would be an excellent replacement for it! They have a similar light crisp texture (Jicama is similar to apples in texture, but less sweet and just a tad spicy.) Daikon radish might be good for the flavor. Maybe use both water chestnuts and daikon radish?
