amobailar
Alright. Day one. Check. It wasn't that bad but I expect tomorrow to be harder and more painful with headaches and such. I had a dull headache today but nothing too bad. I didn't really have any cravings either. I may need to eat more at breakfast though bc I was super hungry about mid morning. Bfast: 2 eggs, 1/4 sweet potato sautéed in coconut oil and a half of an apple. Lunch: chicken breast, spinach and raw green beans. Dinner: Czech meatballs, sautéed veggies in coconut oil and tomato. Snacks: fresh cherries and almonds Tomorrow is Taco Tuesdays at work. I already know what I'm going to order...grilled chicken fajitas minus the rice, beans, sour cream and cheese. However, I am dreading Saturday. I go and meet some more of my boyfriends family and I know they are going to have lasagna and garlic bread. I can eat before which isn't the problem..I'm meeting some of these ppl for the first time and the ones I have met Ive only met a handful of times. How's it gonna look when he brings me with him and I won't eat their food? I live in the South where it's rude to not eat the food someone has prepared and this are ppl I want to make a good impression on. What can I do? amberino21
Hi Brandi! I'd definitely up the breakfast portion - maybe another egg, more vegies (non starchy) and maybe a bit more fat. Did you include any fats with your lunch and dinner (besides cooking fat)? I don't find much of the cooking fat actually makes it to my plate, so make sure to add more. I've found if I make my meals big enough, I don't need to snack - if the meal is too big and you can't finish it you have a perfect protein/fat/vegie mini meal for inbetween meals (which is recommended over fruit/nuts) I don't know how it would be prepared, but perhaps some others may be able to help you out with ordering food - it may be cooked in non compliant oil, or with sauces containing sugar etc. we haven't eaten out yet during our whole 30, but I can imagine it would be tricky to make Sure the meal complies! amberino21
And in terms of the bf's family, perhaps he could let them know you have dietary restrictions, or having digestive issues so you're on an elimination diet at the moment? Or ask if you can take a dish to share with everyone that complies so you know you can eat something?
askins
Yeah, most people are tolerant of food avoidance if you say you have an intolerance or an allergy. Simply saying that you have some dietary restrictions and are on an elimination diet to work out some issues should cover you for politeness. amobailar
Good ideas on the family gathering. Thank you! As for the fat, I guess I need to try adding eating fat to my meals. I figured if I cooked with fat, that was enough. Adding fat to my diet has always been a challenge bc the first thing I think of is avocado. I like avocado but it has to be in something, I don't like eating it by itself. I love all nuts but now I realize I shouldn't have them everyday. What are some of your favorite fat choices? amberino21
we have curries with coconut milk, or home made mayo (yum!!) which I use as is or whiz up with other stuff for dressings. you can make dressings with avo too, or the traditional oil/balsamic on salad. you can also have coconut meat fresh or dried - just make sure it doesn't have sulphites/additives/sugar added. if i'm having fruit with my meal (usually 1-2 meals), i'll chop it in a bowl and sometimes pour coconut milk over the top if my main meal doesn't have a lot of fat or put coconut milk in my coffee. amobailar
Oooh, I'm a coffee drinker and have been drinking black coffee the last couple days which isn't as bad as I thought it would be but coconut milk in my coffee sounds divine! So how much fat should I have at every meal? It doens't seem like I need a lot just a little right? I made the mayo and then used it to make some cumin-lime dressing; I felt like Betty Crocker for a moment. I mean who makes their own mayo?? HaHa I guess I do lol

amobailar
Day two was better than the first. I had to take a motrin this mornimg but no problems after that. No mood swings either although i think my coworkers are treading lightly since i warned them too. I had more at breakfast, actually had some left over and took to work for a snack but didn't need it. I ate Mexican food for lunch but did good there too. I didn't eat dinner because I wasn't hungry. I've been dog sitting for some friends and look forward to going home tomorrow. I also look forward to trying morning coffee with coconut milk I downloaded Zombies,Run! today. I haven't felt like running lately so now that I will be back home and hopefully feel better, I hope to run and strength train more. Bfast: 2 eggs, spinach and olives scrambled together, turkey sausage and half of a banana Lunch: fajitas and salad minus the tortillas, rice, beans, cheese and sour cream. It's funny you say not to be afraid of fat because I think I really am afraid of it. I'll check the meal template. Have a great day tomorrow! amberino21
Most people are - how often have you been told, or made to think that fat will make you fat? The whole "diet/low fat" mentality has been ingrained the brains of most of the western world I think!
amobailar
Ugh. So I didn't eat dinner last night because I wasn't hungry then this morning I wasn't hungry either. This is very unusual for me; I usually wake up starving. I became slightly hungry but didn't want anything; it wasn't that I was "sick" but I just felt blah toward food. I packed a small bfast for later and eventually ate it at work hoping it would make my headache go away (the motrin finally did it) but never really got "hungry". Is this normal? Physibeth
It wasn't what I experienced but a lot of people do. I would encourage you to eat a meal on the low end of the template 3 times a day with about 4-5 hours between whether you think you are hungry or not. When our hormones are re-balancing they can throw all sorts of things out of whack. It is most important to eat a solid meal within an hour or two of waking to break your fast. Sometimes I don't realize I was hungry until I start eating.
amobailar
Thank you Bethany. I will try to eat something in the morning if feel like this again. I felt like if I forced myself to eat then I could have gotten sick so that's why I just packed a little something for when it passed. Where is this meal template? I may have seen it already but I have read so much stuff in the last week, I don't know what I have read and what I haven't.

amobailar
Day 3 My coworkers are beginning to call me Cave Woman. Lol we all pick on one another so it's ok. Someone brought in strawberry cake which is divine cause I've had it before but I resisted. I mean, I wanted a peice but it wasn't like I was drooling over it. After work, my honey took me out to eat to Olive Garden. He asked me as we sat down what I could eat, I said "pretty much nothing here". I didn't eat the bread, I had a salad minus croutons and minestrone soup and ate around the pasta shells. It wasn't strictly Paleo but I think I did well and I'm pleased with myself. All in all, I resisted goodies not once but twice today and found something halfway Paleo in the middle of an Italian restaurant. Score!! Bfast: 2 hb eggs, tomato, olives and half an apple. I know it wasn't much but I didn't have much of an appetite this morning. Lunch: chicken breast, spinach, leftover bfast/snack from yesterday (1/2 banana, 1/2 turkey sausage patty) I was hungry at lunch and wanted more but didn't have anything else to eat. Dinner: Olive Garden...salad, minestrone soup. No bread!! Looking forward to trying coffee with coconut milk in the morning!! Hoping to go to my strength and conditioning class after work. GFChris
Next time you go to Olive Garden, start with their gluten-free menu for possible Whole30 compliant entrees: http://www.olivegarden.com/Menu/Gluten-Allergen/ This way, you can get a protein in for dinner (plus, soup is always suspect for gluten). amobailar
I did not know Olive Garden had a gluten free menu. Sweet. Thanks for the info! I'm going to have to get into the habit of thinking "gluten-free". I don't think I have an intolerance to gluten as much as I do dairy so I'm more conscious of what dairy products are in food. I noticed this morning I felt "puffy" but I think that's due to the sodium content in OG food.
GFChris
If you look at the link I provided and click on the PDF at the page (top right where it says "Print Gluten/Allergen Info"), you will unfortunately see that the minestrone soup you ate had soy, dairy and wheat in it. Oh, and all their Gluten-Free items contain soy and dairy ... hmmm ... Olive Garden is not a great option for eating Whole30.
amobailar
Day 4 Is it day 4 already? I wasnt hungry again this morning but I ate a good sized breakfast anyway and I wasn't hungry til lunch. That's good. I finally got a better nights rest last night in my own bed since the ppl I was dog sitting for came home. One thing I've noticed that may or may not be because of the diet is that I'm not as cold. Ever since I lost 70 lbs a couple yrs ago, I freeze everywhere. It could be 60 degrees and I will freeze. And winter is murder!! I can sleep with long sleeves and pants, socks, a sheet, comforter and another heavy comforter and still have a chill. Ive had my iron checked and its normal. But lately, I haven't frozen in my office when others are cold and I'm wondering if its because I'm eating more fat...? Oh and I tried coffee with coconut milk and I likey! It doesn't taste like cream and sugar but it does give the coffee a creamy texture and its good Also went to bootcamp class tonight; first time in a week. I'd like to go at least twice a week. Bfast: turkey sausage, sautéed "rice" with sweet potato, hb egg, tomato slices. Lunch: grilled chicken salad with vinaigrette Pre-wo: hb egg Dinner: curried "rice", Czech meatballs, tomato/cucumber slices, guacamole and cumin lime dressing for dipping. amobailar
Day 5 I'm doing really well with this diet and its pretty easy for me. I kinda freaked out on the beginning when I was planning what to eat. Before now, i have always planned every meal, snack, dessert, etc. I couldnt use the broccoli in the stew when it has been predestined for the salmon. So when i found Melissa Joulwan's examples of how to run my kitchen like a restaurant, you can sorta understand why I freaked out. "What? You just make a bunch of stuff and throw it together? Without a plan?" As you can tell I'm a little 'structured' in that area. What I'm learning is how to be more creative in the kitchen. I haven't had the same meal any day this week nor have I planned them. Like tonight, I've learned that I love sweet potatoes sautéed in cinnamon and coconut oil but tonight I sliced up some banana to go with it and it as awesome. Who knew bananas and sweet potatoes go together? Not me. It feels like I'm discovering food for the first time and cooking with other seasoning then just the norm. I like this newfound freedom Bfast: turkey sausage, sweet potato/"rice" mixture Lunch: curried rice with chicken breast and cumin lime dressing Dinner: Czech meatballs, sweet potato and banana, "rice" sauté. amobailar
Day 6 I was a bad girl today and I paid for it. Today was the dinner with my bf's family in honor of his parent's wedding anniversary. I was told his cousin usually makes lasagna and garlic bread for this dinner every year. This was the first time I had met his cousin and only a couple times have I met his parents and I wanted to make a good impression--refusing to eat what they prepare is not making a good impression regardless of diet, etc., because it's offensive in the southern tradition especially among the older generations. So, I had decided that I would eat before I went and eat very small portions of what she made. Indeed, she made lasagna and garlic bread. Sigh. And had ice cream. Sigh. By the time I finished the ice cream, my head began to hurt and it still hurts now even after two Motrin. If I'm supposed to start over again after that, then sobeit. I was not tempted by the food, honestly, I didn't want it. My logic in this is although the whole30 is important to me as a reset, not offending ppl who I hope to be my family one day takes precedent. I don't normally have dinner with any of his family but if it should happen again during a W30, I will have an honest to God response for them that maybe they will understand: I'm sorry but your food gives me one hell of a headache. lol Bfast: Turkey sausage, 2 steamed eggs, half apple Lunch/Dinner: Grilled Chicken Salad with cumin lime dressing....small portion of lasanga, 1 pc garlic bread and 1/2 scoop ice cream. Snack: peach
amberino21
I'd say yes, you need to start over. Whether it was tempting or not, you still ate it!! Personally, I've got to the point where I value my health over anyone's feelings and won't just eat something because I feel obliged too. I've become confident in my choices so don't feel bad saying "no". You said you felt awful after eating it - why subject yourself to that, even once? Surely telling them that you couldn't eat it due to intolerances would have been good enough explanation?

amberino21
remember, its not just about chalking up 30 days of eating in a certain way.....the 30 days is supposed to be free of the stuff we cut out to try and help the body and digestive system heal and reset.
