AmyS
It is recommended to treat hair loss caused by Hashimoto's. What is the Whole9 take on this supplement?
Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 22, 2013 Moderators Share Posted July 22, 2013 A search of primrose on the Whole9Life site turned up nothing. My favorite supplement site Examine.com had nothing on primrose oil. A google search turned up a fact sheet for evening primrose oil by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine: http://nccam.nih.gov/health/eveningprimrose The fact sheet said nothing about hair loss and suggested that evidence of benefits for other issues was mixed or limited. My guess is that primrose oil is unlikely to offer meaningful help with hair loss.
Karen
I was on it once in an attempt to raise progesterone levels, but I don't recall seeing anything about hair loss. Biotin comes to mind for that symptom.
AmyS
Ah, sorry, I wasn't clear. Here is the article about using EPO to treat Hashimoto's-induced hair loss: http://thyroid.about.com/cs/hairloss/a/hairloss.htm My question was specifically whether EPO is considered healthy/safe/appropriate in Whole9-world, because when I looked it up, this article http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/evening-primrose-oil/NS_patient-primrose says it is an Omega 6 fatty acid. (Note: I have been looking up remedies for Hashimoto's/thyroid hair loss quite a bit in the past few days and have not come up with anything that everyone seems to completely agree will work. I do plan to implement many of the ideas in the Mary J. Shomon article, but was wondering specifically about EPO due to its being an Omega 6. Also, I started taking Biotin 5000 mcg once a day two days ago. I really, truly, madly, deeply want my hair back. Shomon's article at least gave me hope that it's possible that it will return. I've lost about 1/3 of it and I want it back. )
Renee Lee
It's recommended by Cordain for acne issues. It IS an n6 fatty acid, but it's GLA, which is a long chain one. It's not AA or LA, which are the ones that are pointed to most for their pro-inflammatory properties. Remember, n3s AND n6s are ESSENTIAL fatty acids. We NEED them both. It's just the dose Try it! See what happens!
